You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

This year’s races for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were over before they started. Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in “The Holdovers” took leads in the Gold Derby odds in their respective categories early in the season. They both went on to pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. By the time the Oscars rolled around, there was a “near zero” chance of either of them losing.
In contrast, the lead acting contests provided considerably more suspense. Bradley Cooper in “Maestro,” Paul Giamatti in “The Holdovers” and Cillian Murphy in “Oppenheimer” were all looking strong at different point in the derby, before Murphy really exploded and ultimately won the Best Actor Oscar. And Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Emma Stone in “Poor Things” kept trading the top spot in the Best Actress odds. Gladstone finally reclaimed...

In the 95 years that they’ve been handing out Academy Awards, just 10 African-American actresses have won dating back to Hattie McDaniel’s famed supporting actress triumph for “Gone with the Wind” in 1940. Nine of those wins have come in Best Supporting Actress, with Halle Berry being the lone victor in Best Lead Actress for “Monster’s Ball” in 2002. Berry has expressed disappointment that no other Black winner has followed in her footsteps over the past two decades. But the truth is that while it was 51 years between McDaniel’s win and the second for Whoopi Goldberg in “Ghost” in 1991, things have improved significantly over the past few decades for African American actresses and actors in terms of winning at the Oscars in the supporting categories in particular.

Actress Mo’Nique claimed she has been “blackballed” from the entertainment industry by Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey – and she said she has an audio tape of Perry stating she is “difficult to work with.”
In an interview with football legend Shannon Sharpe on his podcast Club Shay Shay, Mo’Nique reveals she recorded a conversation over the phone between herself and Perry.
After the recorded phone call, Mo’Nique stated that Perry told singer Stephanie Mills he would only meet with Mo’Nique if her husband, Sidney Hicks, was not present. Perry requested a public apology from Mo’Nique and said that he and Oprah had nothing to do with the downfall of her career.
The drama between Mo’Nique, Perry and Winfrey dates back to 2009.

Mo’Nique delivered a viral interview on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast that garnered nearly five million views in 24 hours due to the Oscar-winning comedian’s blunt comments while talking about previous public spats with the likes of Tyler Perry, Netflix, Oprah Winfrey and more. In one of the podcast’s most quoted moments, Mo’Nique declared that her career might’ve been as successful as that of fellow comic Melissa McCarthy had she been given equal opportunities as her white contemporaries.
“If I was a white woman, do you know what my name would be? Melissa McCarthy,” Mo’Nique told host Shannon Sharpe. “If I was a white woman, my name would be Melissa McCarthy. Same track record! Five-year sitcom in syndication. The opportunities are not the same.”
McCarthy starred on the CBS sitcom “Mike and Molly” for six seasons and won an Emmy for outstanding actress in a comedy series.

Mo’Nique praised fellow actress Taraji P. Henson this week for raising awareness about Hollywood’s pay inequality for Black women but also recalled her own attempts to shed light on the issue over a decade ago.

When Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels thinks of those who inspired him, Patrik-Ian Polk easily comes to mind.
Known for telling groundbreaking stories centered on Black gay life — including the independent film Punks, which premiered at Sundance in 2000, and Noah’s Arc, which ran on Logo TV for two seasons from 2005-06 — Polk is a creative force who has chronicled (and continues to chronicle) the lives of underrepresented people while championing diversity way before “Dei” became a buzz term.
“[Polk] was way ahead of the curve, and he took the bullets for all of us when it just wasn’t accepted to do what he was doing,” Daniels, 63, says of Polk, 49. “His bravery is what I ran with in my career. I learned from Patrik that I wasn’t going to take no for an answer. When I say he really has inspired me — he’s a mentor.”

Academy Award-winning actress Mo’Nique sued CBS and Paramount for reportedly retaining millions of dollars worth of royalties from the TV sitcom The Parkers.
Mo’Nique’s production company, Hicks Media, filed the breach-of-contract lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court. The lawsuit alleges that CBS and Paramount “artificially depressed” the show’s profitability in an attempt to “retain millions that would otherwise be contractually due” to Hicks Media.
“While [The Parkers] has proven to be a major financial success for its producers and distributors, the series’ talent have not been permitted to share in the fruits of that success,” the lawsuit alleges.
Mo’Nique took to Instagram on Thursday to confirm the lawsuit, writing that “Today we filed a lawsuit to make sure that we are fairly paid money that we are owed for “The Parkers”. Actors rely on the good faith of Hollywood companies to honor their profit participation agreements.

Mo’Nique Hicks is taking Paramount to court over alleged unpaid royalties for The Parkers.
In a complaint filed on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, the comedian alleges that an audit of the show concluded that the network “inequitably structured the Series’ finances to artificially depress its profitability” so it can “retain tens of millions that would otherwise be contractually due and owed.” She also claims that Paramount likely deprived the show’s writers and creators of their rights to profit participation.
The Parkers, a spinoff series of hit ‘90s sitcom Moesha that aired for six seasons, continues to run on various networks and is carried by Netflix. It was produced by Big Ticket Productions, which is owned by CBS Studios.
Hicks Media operates as the loan-out entity for Mo’Nique and is entitled to contingent compensation of 2.5 percent of the series’ gross adjusted receipts. CBS accounts for profit participation to Hicks Media.

Mo’Nique has filed a lawsuit against CBS and Paramount seeking what she claims is millions in unpaid royalties stemming from her early 2000s sitcom The Parkers.

Mo’Nique has filed a lawsuit alleging that Paramount and CBS owe her millions in profit participation from her show “The Parkers.”
The show ran for five seasons on Upn, from 1999 through 2004. The show’s creators — Ralph Farquhar, Sara Finney-Johnson and Vida Spears — filed a similar lawsuit last June, alleging that CBS had engaged in various forms of “financial malfeasance” to artificially inflate expenses and suppress profit payments. The network settled that case out of court in November.
Mo’Nique, whose legal name is Monique Hicks, filed her own suit on Wednesday, repeating many of the claims in the show creators’ lawsuit.
The suit notes that the production company, Big Ticket Productions, and Upn were both owned by Viacom, and alleges that Upn was allowed to pay a below-market fee to distribute the show. The suit also suggests that the show was packaged for cable distribution at below-market rates, further depressing its profitability.

The breach of contract lawsuit, filed in a Los Angeles Superior Court, alleges CBS and Paramount artificially depressed “The Parkers” profitability to “retain millions that would otherwise be contractually due” to Mo’Nique’s production company.
The suit states, “While the series has proven to be a major financial success for its producers and distributors, the series’ talent have not been permitted to share in the fruits of that success.”
Mo’Nique and her husband and business partner, Sidney Hicks, filed the lawsuit under their production company, Hicks Media. The lawsuit is seeking monetary damages which will be determined at a trial. They are suing both CBS and Paramount and the show’s production company Big Ticket Productions.

In Mo’Nique’s new Netflix stand-up special, the Academy Award winner spends some time talking and joking about her stint on The Parkers. However, a profit participation suit filed today against Paramount Pictures, CBS TV Studios and others is no laughing matter.
“While the Series has proven to be a major financial success for its producers and distributors, the series’ talent have not been permitted to share in the fruits of that success,” declares the breach of contract action over the sitcom that ran on the now defunct Upn from 1999 to 2004 (read it here).

Before Mo’Nique even walks onto the stage at the Rialto Center for the Arts in Atlanta, she reminds us of the criticism and insults she’s faced over the years with audio clips of those who taunted her. When Mo’Nique demanded higher pay as one of the most famous Black female comedians in the world, she was called “Donkey of the Day” by radio DJs. She was told she burned too many bridges to ever have the fame she once knew. Mo’Nique wants you to know she heard all of it, and her response? “Thank you for the encouragement.”...

In her latest comedy special entitled “My Name is Mo’Nique,” which premiered on Netflix on April 4, Mo’Nique tearfully recounts a confession she made to her husband Sidney Hicks. In the special, she tells the story of admitting to Hicks for the first time that she wanted “to be with another woman sexually.”
The Academy Award winner, who’s been married to Hicks since 2006, reveals she had kept her desires a secret for most of her life out of fear, due to her family history. As she nears the end of her set in “My Name is Mo’Nique,” she spends a portion of the special remembering the relationship between her grandmother MiMi and a queer family member whom she affectionally refers to as “Uncle Tina,” reflecting on the distant relationship the two had due to Tina’s sexuality.

Mo'Nique is finally ready to put the past behind her, and by that she means her 13-year feud with Lee Daniels. In the midst of her return to TV, movies, and standup comedy, the comedian sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on March 8, to recap the years of her career after she won her 2010 Oscar for Daniels's "Precious" - a movie that also led to their public fallout.
It all started in 2009 in the run-up to Mo'Nique's big night at the Oscars, when, according to the comedian, she refused to do full-court press for "Precious" because she wouldn't be compensated to promote it during award season, per THR. At the time, Mo'Nique was hosting a talk show on BET and also wanted time to spend with her husband (and manager), Sidney Hicks, and her sons Shalon, 32, and twins Jonathan and David, 17. Netflix has released its Top 10 for the week of March 27, and it was little to no surprise that Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston‘s comedy sequel “Murder Mystery 2” entered the English language films chart in first place. After all, the original 2019 movie was such a huge hit for Netflix.
The action-comedy sequel entered the charts with 64.4 million hours viewed, the second-biggest launch for a comedy film with 42 million views, appearing in the Top 10 in 91 countries with it being the #1 movie in more than 60 of those countries.
Right behind it was the original “Murder Mystery” with 24.7 million hours viewed globally, and the previous #1 movie “Luther: The Fallen Sun” with 12.7 million viewing hours. The lack of strong family films in theaters allowed four animated films to get into the Top 10 with Netflix’s “The Magician’s Elephant” leading the pack with 6.3 million viewing hours.

My Name Is Mo’Nique is a stand-up comedy special starring the only, the queen, the one… Mo’Nique.
Mo’Nique introduces herself with the full force of her irresistible personality, her expletive-filled vocabulary and her brutal sincerity on a stage (Atlanta) that totally surrenders to this fury of a woman, someone who is full of energy and knows exactly who she is addressing and how to win her audience’s affection.
In this show, Mo’Nique tells us – in a comedy key – the vicissitudes of her life, each one adorned by a F…k, very likeable, and, above all, great style on stage.
Another thing is that it is the kind of style you are looking for: maybe it’s not for everyone, maybe it’s not for all tastes, but of course, if you come to this show, she knows how to transmit “her” very own style of comedy.
Enjoy it,...

With Will Smith banned from attending the 94th Academy Awards after slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 ceremony, all eyes were on who the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would select to present this year’s best actress category. Actress Mo’Nique has opened up about an argument with Oprah Winfrey over a 2010 episode on her talk show that involved her estranged family members.
After her Oscar win that year, Winfrey told Mo’Nique that her brother wanted to be on the show to “let her know how parents can watch out for predators,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
Mo’Nique’s brother had previously admitted to molesting her when she was seven and he was 13.
Mo’Nique said it was fine for her brother to make an appearance, but she was “horrified” to see her parents and another brother, who largely ignored the abuse, on the show.
Before the episode aired, she tried to get ahold of Winfrey to say that she wasn’t on speaking terms with her mother and that her family was only there for the money. She reached out to several people but could never get in contact with Winfrey.

Mo’Nique is opening up about her high-profile feuds. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 55-year-old comedian discusses both the origins and current standings of her public feuds with Lee Daniels, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.
Everything started in 2004 when she met Daniels. The following year, she appeared in his directorial debut, “Shadowboxer”. From there, Mo’Nique says, she and Daniels “never stopped communicating,” all the way up to her starring role in the 2009 film “Precious”.
The film quickly earned critical praise and was part of the awards season discussion, something that Daniels, along with producers Winfrey and Perry, wanted to capitalize on. Mo’Nique declined to go on a press tour without being compensated for her time, and thus the rift began.

Roseanne Barr is mounting a comeback attempt, five years after she was unceremoniously fired over a tweet joking that former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett — who is Black — was the offspring of the Muslim Brotherhood and “The Planet of the Apes” after the return of her eponymous sitcom “Roseanne” broke ratings records.
After her firing, “Roseanne” was cancelled and then revived as “The Conners”, with her character killed off by an opioid overdose.
Now, Barr is returning to the standup comedy stage for “Roseanne Barr: Cancel This!,” a new special that will stream Monday, Feb. 13 on Fox Nation, the Fox News streaming service, in which she takes on Hollywood’s “cancel culture,” among other topics.

Roseanne Barr has called out what she thinks is the sexist double standard of cancel culture and addressed ABC for firing her from her own sitcom reboot “Roseanne” before rebranding it as “The Conners.”
“It was a witch-burning,” Barr said of the fallout in a new interview with The Los Angeles Times. “They denied me the right to apologize. Oh my God, they just hated me so badly. I had never known that they hated me like that. They hate me because I have talent, because I have an opinion. Even though ‘Roseanne’ became [ABC’s] No. 1 show, they’d rather not have a No. 1 show.”
Barr continued, “When they killed my character off, that was a message to me – knowing that I’m mentally ill or have mental health issues – that they did want me to commit suicide.”
Barr pointed out that fellow stand-ups Dave Chappelle and Louis C.K. have since...
