After four days of celebrating and acknowledging Canadian achievements on screens of all shapes and sizes the winners were announced at a ceremony on Friday night. On the film side we don't think anyone is surprised that Matt Johnson's BlackBerry dominated this year with a whopping fourteen awards, a record for the CSAs. Among the awards won were Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Direction for Matt Johnson, Performance in a Leading Role, Comedy for Jay Baruchel, and Performance in a Supporting Role, Comedy for Glenn Howerton. BlackBerry is not genre but we do consider Johnson one of ours for his films The DIrties and Operation Avalance. These are wins for us by proxy. Specifically to the genre side of things there were two bigs...

Matt Johnson’s BlackBerry satirical comedy earned the best movie honor at the Canadian Screen Awards on Friday, which also tapped the Canadian Indigenous TV series Little Bird as the best TV drama.
In earlier prize-giving this week, BlackBerry picked up hardware for best adapted screenplay, cinematography and a best supporting comedy performance trophy for Glenn Howerton. The fact-based feature that bowed in Berlin also awarded Johnson the best director honor, and Jay Baruchel the best comedy performance trophy.
Little Bird, which came into the Canadian film and TV awards with a field-leading 19 nominations, saw Darla Contois pick up the best TV drama performance prize after the series earlier earned trophies for best drama ensemble, best casting and best supporting drama performer for Braeden Clarke.

Here's a really strange random fact about me: I grew up with emetophobia, the intense fear of vomit and vomiting. The very idea of blowing chunks got my anxiety going, which is what makes my deep, abiding love for "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" kind of hilarious. You see, there is a lot of vomiting, gagging, and spitting up on "It's Always Sunny." There are some amazing puke-filled moments, of course, like Charlie (Charlie Day) spewing all over his date because he swallowed fake blood capsules, or Dennis (Glenn Howerton) barfing while dancing because he did a bunch of shots rapid-fire. It turns out that in the right circumstances, vomit can be really funny, and in the case of "It's Always Sunny," the funniest yakking usually comes courtesy of Sweet Dee, played by Kaitlin Olson.

Joel Edgerton has been in Star Wars and the series Obi-Wan Kenobi, so he is versed in sci-fi.
But he failed his audition for the role of Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy. He says the reason for that is not understanding the film’s tone.
In an EW interview, Edgerton said that the part — which went to Chris Pratt — was a good choice by casting.
“Star-Lord’s a good one, actually, because I, unlike Chris, didn’t quite sort of understand the tone of it the way he did and the way that those guys did,” he said. “And I wasn’t really sure how I could be a part of that tone.”
Edgerton added, “And I truly think that the world is a much better place [because] I’m not Star-Lord, even if I had the opportunity or I did a good enough audition, because it is the...

As of the end of season 16, there are 162 episodes of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," and the vast majority of them are great. There are a couple of stinkers like the almost universally reviled "Frank's Brother" or the overly nihilistic "Charlie and Dee Find Love," but for the most part, "Sunny" is fantastic. That's what makes trying to select a favorite episode so difficult, not only for fans but also for the people who make the long-running show. It's tough to pick a favorite when there are so many truly terrific episodes, but series creator and star Rob McElhenney somehow managed, and it's an episode that gave one star a real head injury.
In an Fxx promo interview with the cast for season 13 of the series, McElhenney was asked about his very favorite scene in the show and he brought up an infamous moment in the season 4 episode "Who Pooped the Bed?...

Fans could potentially spend hours arguing about the worst things the gang on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" have done over the course of 16 seasons. They have locked their enemies in a burning apartment, willfully manipulated members of the opposite sex, intentionally gotten addicted to drugs in order to try and scam the welfare system, and much morel. It's also pretty easy to argue about which member of the gang is the worst human being because they're all pretty monstrous. But there is one truly horrible thing, according to star Glenn Howerton, that his character Dennis hasn't done.
That might sound impossible, seeing as Dennis is among the gang's worst when it comes to being misanthropic (though Howerton had argued that Dennis isn't a psychopath). Still, there actually is a terrible, awful thing that Dennis has spoken about a few times but hasn't done, at least not in any episodes of "It's Always Sunny" itself.

The "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" gang has been at fault for quite a few deaths over the years -- from a guy shooting himself in a Russian Roulette game arranged by Frank, to Mac and Dee letting a kid drown at a water park. If you count animals, Charlie's got the highest body count in the gang, as he's murdered not just the many men rats in Paddy's Pub, but the women and children rats too. Then again, the implied horrors that went on in Frank's old sweatshop might put Charlie's rat genocide to shame.
But for Glenn Howerton, who plays the psychopathic Dennis Reynolds, one of the deaths that haunts him was only kind of the gang's fault. In a 2017 interview he talked about how he regretted killing off Roxy (Alanna Ubach), a successful yet unstable sex worker whom Frank tries to marry in season 7. She unexpectedly...

Updated May 9: Peacock has confirmed the show’s move from NBC and noted that John Shiban will return as showrunner.
Previous: NBC’s loss is Peacock’s gain — again.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Peacock is putting the finishing touches on a deal that would see Law & Order: Organized Crime move from NBC to the streamer for a fifth season consisting of 10 episodes.
Reps for Peacock, NBC, producers Universal Television and executive producer Dick Wolf declined to comment, as a deal has yet to officially close.
Marking a return to the L&o world for franchise favorite Chris Meloni, Organized Crime has overperformed on Peacock with the streamer serving as the streaming home for all things Dick Wolf. Once the deal is formalized, Peacock will now have a Wolf original series to go with next-day episodes of NBC’s already renewed L&o flagship as well as Svu.

Whether the internet likes it or not, Velma is back for Season 2. The adult animated series, which first premiered on Max in 2023, returns with another round of mysteries and hijinks on Thursday, April 25.
Created by Charlie Grandy, the show is an alternate universe origin story that reimagines the Scooby-Doo gang as high schoolers. It centers on sarcastic teenage detective Velma (Mindy Kaling) and her friends Fred (Glenn Howerton), Daphne (Constance Wu), and Norville (Sam Richardson), aka Shaggy. Scooby-Doo himself notably doesn’t appear, in part due to rights issues between the studios.

Al Pacino and Dan Stevens have teamed up for exorcism horror film “The Ritual” from director David Midell.
XYZ Films has acquired worldwide rights to the feature, with plans to release it theatrically in 2025 and arrange international distribution at the upcoming Cannes market.
“The Ritual” was written by Midell and Enrico Natale and produced by Andrew Stevens, Mitchell Welch and Natale. Ashley Greene and Abigail Cowen round out the cast.
Based on a true story, “The Ritual” follows two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms. The film is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession culminated in harrowing exorcisms. Her case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.

In 2014, Glenn Howerton took part in an Ask Me Anything (Ama) session on Reddit, mostly answering questions about "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." One of the questions from user cujoman2004 was, "If you could have anyone make a guest appearance on 'Always Sunny,' who would it be and for what purpose would you want this person to do?" Howerton responded:
"Al Pacino. Just to have him like, scream at me for five straight minutes. And then wander out of the bar after realizing he was screaming at the wrong person."
While there have been many fabulous guest stars on "Always Sunny," including Bryan Cranston, Guillermo del Toro, and Josh Groban, having an actor of Al Pacino's stature would be truly unforgettable, especially in a show that is so off-the-wall. But Pacino is not afraid to go wild and weird. He's flourished in many comedies, from the lighthearted, family-friendly affair "Author!

Watching "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is hilarious, so one can only imagine what it's like to be in the same room when the gang are engaging in their over-the-top antics. The "Always Sunny" blooper reels have always been pretty great because there are so many fun little alternate line-readings and moments where everyone loses it, with a few rather funny highlights of their own. I get the giggles every time I imagine Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day cracking up talking about "the white hot cream" of a preteen Charlie in "The Gang Dances Their A**es Off," for example. Laughing can be contagious, and chuckling along with folks behind the gang is pretty easy, but apparently even star Glenn Howerton sometimes bursts into bouts of laughter when he thinks about how much he lost it during one particular moment in season 10.

There have been some truly incredible cameos on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" over the years, ranging from all of the gang's spouses to director Guillermo del Toro, who is nearly unrecognizable as Pappy McPoyle. Often, the cameos come about because the main cast knew someone — del Toro worked with star Charlie Day on "Pacific Rim," for example — but sometimes, they really try to reach beyond their circle of friends and acquaintances. Sometimes it works, while other times they're totally out of luck. The season 4 episode "Dennis Reynolds: An Erotic Life" is a perfect example of both, because there are some wonderful cameos and one that just sadly didn't work out.
In the episode, Dennis (Glenn Howerton) wants to publish his erotic memoirs, but Frank (Danny DeVito) and Mac (Rob McElhenney) point out that the stories inside are totally make-believe and could open them up to litigation -- for example,...

One thing to know about "Always Sunny" is that it isn't afraid to go dark. From Charlie getting molested to Dennis being a possible serial killer, this is a show filled to the brim with material that would be horrifying if delivered in a slightly different tone. Such was the case in the season 4 episode "Dennis Reynolds: An Erotic Life," the one where Dennis ends up in a terrifying rehab center. There he's harassed by two patients, comedian Sinbad and musician Rob Thomas. Sinbad is a terrifying force of nature, and Thomas is his loyal, quiet sidekick. The episode ends with the reveal that this was all in Dennis's head, or was it? It's sort of ambiguous.
In the original version of the episode, Sinbad and Rob Thomas got a lot more screen time, with brutal results for Thomas. As Charlie Day explained on The Always Sunny Podcast:

The writing on the long-running FX comedy series "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is some of the funniest in the business, but sometimes it's really the performances that make the show so hilarious. Whether it's the way Glenn Howerton punctuates his rage with pitchy staccato line reads or simply the way Danny DeVito pronounces the word "no," the way certain moments are interpreted by the actors can really make or break a joke. One of the funniest moments in all of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" involves a bit of screaming and not too much actual dialogue, all courtesy of Andrew Friedman's character Uncle Jack -- although it turns out there was a bit of help from co-star, writer, and producer Charlie Day.
In a Reddit Ask Me Anything thread, Friedman revealed that Day helped him a bit with a now-infamous scene where Uncle Jack flings a fake hand...

Zoe Lister-Jones was proud to attend Sunday’s Spirit Awards, and the reason is twofold. First, the multihyphenate talent turned up in Santa Monica to support a pair of nominations for Roku’s Slip, the original series she created, starred in and executive produced alongside a team that includes Dakota Johnson. Reason No. 2: She did so by walking into the event hand-in-hand with a new love in her life.
When the subject of her plus-one came up during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old Lister-Jones responded with a big reveal: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.” Lister-Jones is in a new relationship with a fellow filmmaker, Sammi Cohen, who most recently directed Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, the teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and family including wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Da’Vine Joy Randolph joked about the struggles of filming The Holdovers, including a lack of “heated seats during a Boston winter,” and other resources but also praised independent filmmaking as “the beating heart of this industry” while accepting the Film Independent Spirit Award for best supporting performance on Sunday.
“I often joke that making Holdovers felt like doing a student film,” she said. “Whatever resources we lacked, such as heated seats during a Boston winter, we made up for and care and determination every day. I was astonished by the level of innovation and creativity that our cast and crew exhibited in order to turn what limited resources we had into an incredible piece of art, all of which is a beautiful testament of what can happen when a small group of passionate people are given a chance to come together and tell the story.”

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has been on for a record-breaking 16 seasons, making it the longest-running live-action sitcom of all time ... but, for some reason, it's never won an Emmy. Actually, it's never even been nominated for an Emmy, unless you count the three times the series was nominated for "Outstanding Stunt Coordination For A Comedy Series Or A Variety Program." The show has been around forever and continues to make people laugh and fans go absolutely rabid creating memes and video edits, so it honestly feels a bit absurd that it's never been honored with the biggest award in television. The gang even appeared on the 2024 Emmy Awards ceremony and poked fun at the fact that they had never been awarded, though Danny DeVito noted that he had.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has had some pretty unforgettable bits over the years, but some of the best moments of the show hands down are the musical numbers. There was Dee's rapping boyfriend, Dennis and Mac's glam rock band, the animated musical number in the season 4 Christmas special, and of course, there was "The Nightman Cometh." But who could forget one of the most popular songs in "Sunny" — the patriotic anthem "Rock, Flag, and Eagle."
The song was originally an inside joke between series co-creator and star Charlie Day, who stars in the show as a character named after himself, along with actor and writer David Hornsby, who plays the recurring character Rickety Cricket.
"Hornsby and I would joke about truck commercials, and that they — at that time, I don't know if they're still doing this — it seemed like they were just pumping out the most stereotypical American things,...

The gang in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" are always getting themselves into trouble, but the series creators can't be quite as reckless as their characters. As lawless as the series may seem, they have to abide by the same safety codes as every other major network show. The much-needed protection of unions and insurance has made it so cruder methods used in the filmmaking days of yore are no longer kosher on set. Unfortunately, that means that certain dangerous practical effects from the gritty New Hollywood era have gone the way of the Dodo. So when the "Sunny" creators wanted to mimic an effect from acclaimed filmmaker David Cronenberg's early career hit "Scanners," they ran into a major roadblock.
An important moment in American history is re-imagined in "The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell," in which the gang's timeless adversary Rickety Cricket gets his head blown off violently (albeit accidentally) with a musket.

The "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" guest star roster is impressive. The series has seen special appearances by the likes of Sean William Scott, Lance Reddick, P. Diddy, Tom Sizemore, and more, but among the best of the best is "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, who played the wrestler known as "Da Maniac" in the hit FX comedy series. First appearing in the episode "The Gang Wrestles for the Troops," Piper really gives his all to the character, who is a down-on-his-luck amateur wrestler who works in the local Philly circuit. It looks like he might live out of his car and he tries to sign autographs on parking tickets, but he's pretty good at the whole wrestling thing (and he's a fantastic Invigiron berry pill salesman!).

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has had some wild guest stars over the years, from Guillermo del Toro to P. Diddy. Usually, the celebrities only appear for a single episode, but one Oscar nominee actually had a recurring role in season 2.
That actor is Anne Archer, whose performance as Beth Gallagher in the 1987 mega-hit "Fatal Attraction" earned her a Golden Globe nomination as well as an Academy Award nomination. Archer's time on "Sunny" was short-lived but unforgettable. The actor plays Barbara Reynolds, mother to Dee and Dennis and ex-wife of Frank. Barbara resurfaces in her family's lives in the season 2 episode "The Gang Goes Jihad" to regain control of her possessions after being divorced by Frank and robbed by her children.
Series co-creator and star Glenn Howerton has described Archer's performance in her debut episode as "very funny" and "amazing" (via the "Always Sunny" Podcast). The actor was not...
