This Northern Ireland-set feature veers unconvincingly from a schoolgirl’s abortion dilemma to a welter of subplots before a clumsy tonal shift
Redolent of young-adult fiction by way of school hijinks movies, with a whiff of British realism, this is much less satisfying than all that would suggest. An Irish Angel revolves around pregnant teenager Aine (Niamh James) living in Portrush in Northern Ireland who, as the film starts, has yet to tell her mum Margaret (Amanda Doherty) she’s up the duff, although her grandmother Agnes (Kathy Deehan) already suspects what’s going on.
At least her best friend, sweet-natured goof and aspiring actor Leo (Todd Bell), offers to help her pay for an abortion but Aine dithers over whether she wants to terminate or not. Dreams about the school caretaker (Shane Robinson) taking the form of Jesus are not especially helpful when it comes to working out what to do.

Adam Deacon’s star-stuffed parody arrives on digital platforms next week ahead of a boxing day rental release.
The latest film from BAFTA-winner Adam Deacon will be available to download and keep on digital platforms from the 12th December, before becoming rent-able (presumably from those same ‘digital platforms’) from the 26th December.
We’ve not managed to catch this one yet, but the synopsis (and a stacked cast list) have our curiosity piqued. Here is that very same synopsis:
In this parody of the UK urban genre Riko and Kane have got it all … big dreams, no respect and a fifteen grand debt. Could things get any worse?
Yes! So, it’s time to man up and finally be taken seriously as “Roadmen”. Once putting their heads together on various ways to make some money, they decide to rob a megastar in a nightclub toilet and hold up the local bank,...

‘Shape of You’ hitmaker Ed Sheeran is set to shock fans as he will soon be seen playing a homeless drug addict in a new action-comedy film. The 32-year-old musician will star opposite Denise van Outen, Jennifer Saunders, Jaime Winstone, Peter Serafinowicz and Kevin Bishop in a big screen adventure that was filmed in London last year, reports Mirror.co.uk.
The film is titled ‘Sumotherhood’ and has been written and directed by Adam Deacon.

The Masked Singer is back, with fans tuning in every Saturday night to try to guess which celebrity is behind each costume.
Comedian Joel Dommett has returned to host proceedings, with 13 mystery stars singing familiar songs on stage, while dressed up in an outfit obscuring their identity.
Guessing along with the in-studio audience and the viewers at home are the judges: Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Jonathan Ross.
One way to help narrow things down is checking out who’s been on the series before – as it seems unlikely they’d return to the show (although not impossible).

Season one
Winner: Nicola Roberts – Queen Bee
Jason Manford – Hedgehog
Katherine Jenkins – Octopus
CeeLo Green – Monster
Denise van Outen – Fox

The creators and stars of upcoming Stephen Merchant-starring BBC1 factual drama Four Lives about serial killer Stephen Port’s crimes have slammed London’s Metropolitan Police and the UK justice system for “monumental failings” over the case. Merchant also teased his approach to playing the lead role of Port, describing him as “like the shark from Jaws in that the shark is unknowable.”
An inquest into the Met’s investigation into Port’s four murders concluded earlier this month that three of them “probably” could have been avoided if the police hadn’t missed opportunities, while a group of UK MPs has called for a public inquiry into claims of institutional homophobia that beset the case.

An interesting take on identity, as one half of a young couple videos the other, gets taken over by social commentary
This London drama is directed with absolute confidence by first-timers Darragh Carey and Bertrand Desrochers, hitting the ground running with a girl-meets-boy story set in Brixton. It begins with a chaotic rush of teenage energy and hormones when white middle-class teenager Leah (Lily Newmark) gets together with Benji (Ola Orebiyi), who is black and from a low-income family. Before they meet, budding video artist Leah secretly follows Benji around Brixton, voyeuristically filming him handing out flyers for his mum’s nail bar and mucking about with his mates. Her footage gives us a portrait of Benji as an intriguing mix of charisma and shyness – with an innate kindness that makes the tragedy coming his way painful to watch.

There's a nervy energy to this feature debut from Darragh Carrey and Betrand Desrochers, who show a flair for visual storytelling even if the narrative ultimately treads a predictable path. Visuals are at the heart of this tale, which is partly seen through the lens of white young blogger Ophelia (Lily Newmark), who it turns out is a "proper rich girl".
She masks this to a degree behind a permanent pout, by shortening her name to Leah and hanging about the street with her camera, where she is particularly drawn to black teenager Benji (Ola Orebiyi) and his mates. "I need you to focus on your life... Think about the things that you want to know..." Trinity Creative has just revealed an official trailer for an acclaimed British indie film titled Hurt by Paradise, which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2019, also stopping by the Raindance Film Festival. Hurt by Paradise is a film about a poet and a girl with big hair. Together they find friendship as the possibility of their dreams dwindles. It's described as "the British Francis Ha... a heartfelt love letter to female friendship and London, from first time writer/director Greta Bellamacina," who also stars in the film as Celeste Blackwood. The cast includes Nicholas Rowe, Anna Brewster, Sai Bennett, Jaime Winstone, and Tanya Burr. This looks a bit kooky but still charming and extra clever and, of course, brutally honest about the way things are. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Greta Bellamacina's Hurt by Paradise,...

Right spoilers on my verdict out of the way first…. I keep saying a lot lately that we are smack dab in the middle of an independent movie surge in the UK, with some truly fantastic directors, actors, producers and DOPs all standing up and being counted. Whatever your genre you can find something for you – from quality horror with the Shudder lockdown movie Host, straight up sci-fi with Tom Paton’s G-Loc, a sports drama with Sam Gitten’s vehicle Break or martial arts action with Kung Fu Matty’s Tribal: Get Out Alive… One other independent UK movie that I managed to check out recently that fits the same category is Knuckledust. Like all festivals, the Slamdance Film Festival is set to shift to a hybrid fest for its 27th edition — but it isn’t holding back on its programming as it will feature 20 feature film premieres while highlighting diverse voices and accessibility. With the theme “Greenlight Yourself,” the indie-driven fest will also launch a new program titled Unstoppable, a showcase for creators with disabilities.
The fest will run February 12-25, 2021 with all films, Q&As and panels available virtually via Slamdance.com, AppleTV, Roku, Firestick, and YouTube. In addition, there will be a two-night drive-in presentation in Joshua Tree, CA open to the public on February 13-14 as well as the closing-night screening at a Los Angeles drive-in on February 25.

"This is my world... And I control everything in it." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for Knuckledust, an intense action-thriller movie that looks like a mash-up between Fight Club and The Raid (the original one from 2011). A specialized police task force discovers an elite fight club (called "Club Knuckledust") where they find seven underground levels, each filled with the dead bodies of fighters from around the world. Only one man is found left alive. The task force has to work out if he's a mass murderer or the lone survivor? Of course, we already know he fought his way down there and is probably the winner. But still! This looks brutally intense. Starring Moe Dunford, Kate Dickie, Camille Rowe, Phil Davis, Alex Ferns, Olivier Richters, Jaime Winstone, Gethin Anthony, and Sebastien Foucan. This looks like it could be seriously badass, or one big, bloody mess. Hopefully it's...

Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for British-Nigerian actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s feature directorial debut, “Farming,” a fascinating true story about a young black boy’s search for love and belonging within a savage skinhead subculture. Based on Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s own unbelievable story as a troubled youth in London, the title “Farming” refers to the practice of giving children over to informal fostering, which many Nigerian parents did in 1960s and 1970s Britain.
Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s parents, at the time students in 1967 London, gave him to a white working-class couple in Tilbury, which was then a fiercely insular, majority white dockside community. He was in constant danger of physical attack from local kids who, encouraged by their parents, nurtured a violent fear of black people.
Seeing his skin color as a burden, and actually thinking of himself as white, Akinnuoye-Agbaje developed a reputation for violence, eventually joining the local skinhead gang...

HanWay Films, which is handling sales, has also closed deals with Ad Vitam in France, September Films in the Benelux region, Icon in Australasia, and Cdc in Latin America and South Korea.

“The film happened when it was actually meant to in society,” Akinnuoye-Agbaje recently told Variety about the long-gestating, semi-autobiographical project. “Now we’re in a time when diverse voices have a platform.
