Yesterday, all their troubles seemed so far away.
In 2022, Peter Rosza and Conor Woulfe sued Universal Pictures after they rented the 2019 movie “Yesterday” on Amazon Prime Video and subsequently felt they had been bamboozled by the trailer. The film, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, is a zany musical fantasy in which Himesh Patel, a struggling musician, is bonked on the head and wakes up in a world in which The Beatles Never Happened. As such, he starts playing their songs as if they are his own and the movie follows the expected Preston Sturges-like tropes you might expect.
The trailer for the movie featured quite a few glimpses of the alluring Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas, later Oscar-nominated for her leading turn in “Blonde,” who ended up not being in the movie at all. An early cut included her character, but that storyline was shaved down after the movie tested poorly.

In a move reminiscent of Hulu’s latest dealings, BritBox is now coming under the control of a single company.
It’s a little strange to see streaming services that are controlled by more than one company these days. Hulu, for example, is finally in the process of coming under the full ownership of Disney, after years of being split between that company, Fox and Comcast. The journey of BritBox from multiple owners to one has been far swifter, as BBC Studios has announced it has acquired ITV’s 50% stake in the international arm of British-focused streaming platform.
BBC Studios paid $322 million for ITV’s stake in BritBox. Extended licensing agreements will keep ITV content available to stream on Britbox for years to come. A change in ownership could signal big incoming changes for BritBox. 7-Day Free Trial $8.99+ / month BritBox.com

European giant Beta Film, known for ambitious titles such as “Babylon Berlin” and “The Swarm,” has shared with Variety in exclusivity a first-look picture of 1o-part series “Rise of the Raven,” which it hails as “one of the most epic European TV productions of all time.”
“Rise of the Raven” weighs in as a passion project of Hungarian-born and Canada-based producer Robert Lantos, behind “Sunshine,” “The Sweet Hereafter,” “Barney’s Version,” “Eastern Promises” and “Crimes of the Future.”
A highlight at Beta Film’s showcase this Tuesday at the London TV Screenings, “Rise of the Raven” turns on the extraordinary feat of Hungarian army commander Janos Hunyadi, played by discovery Gellért L. Kádár, who in 1456 won a bloody, brutal Battle of Belgrade against a vast Ottoman force twice the size of his troops who were often farm labourers armed with just slings and patriotic fervor.

The Alabama Supreme Court’s recent ruling that embryos created using in-vitro-fertilization (IVF) are legally equivalent to people has caused absolute chaos as healthcare providers try to figure out the implications of this new legal status quo. It’s potentially massive and unsettling, as John Oliver pointed out the core absurdity on Last Week Tonight when he joked: “If you freeze an embryo, it’s fine. If you freeze a person, you have some explaining to do.”
The ruling, handed down last week, is already impacting fertility clinics across the state.

Los Angeles, Feb 12 (Ians) ‘Mr Bean’ star Rowan Atkinson, who has previously played the titular hapless secret agent in three movies in the spy spoof franchise ‘Johnny English’ will return for a fourth installement.
He featured in ‘Jhonny English’, ‘Johnny English Reborn’, and 2018’s ‘Johnny English Strikes Again’.
The movie will be shot in the summer in the UK and Malta, but the plot details are being kept under wraps, according to Screendaily. Details about the project are largely unknown, but Working Titles Films will produce for the fourth time, reports aceshowbiz.com.
While promoting the third movie in the series, Atkinson said he thought a fourth installment would be unlikely.

The animated version of Rowan Atkinson’s silent slapstick sitcom Mr Bean is to return to television for a fourth series in 2025.
Mr Bean must be one of the most well known comedy characters on the planet. Relying entirely on Rowan Atkinson’s rubber face, slapstick and visual humour, Atkinson first wrote the show with Richard Curtis and Robin Driscoll almost 35 years ago.
Premiering in 1990, Mr Bean ran for just 15 episodes, with stories typically following a formula of the hapless title character trying to accomplish a seemingly simple task and escalating it to farcical levels. Memorable moments include a dangerous diving experience, putting his swimming trunks on without removing his trousers and, perhaps the most iconic sequence from the entire series – getting a turkey stuck on his head. In 1997, the character went to America in the feature film Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie, which was directed by the much missed comedian Mel Smith.

At least one of the stars of Derry Girls would sign up for a reprise of the hit comedy.
Saoirse-Monica Jackson, who played lead Derry Girl Erin in the award-winning show based on the lives of four Northern Irish teenage girls (and an English male cousin), told The Belfast Telegraph she hopes she hasn’t said goodbye to her character for ever, following the show’s triumphant finale in 2022.
She said: “It felt bizarre when the show ended, because I was done with Erin, but Lisa is continuing her life.
“It would be interesting to revisit Erin down the line and see what she’s up to because your twenties are so chaotic. But that would really be down to Lisa. I’d love to work with her again.”
Derry Girls became one of Channel 4’s biggest ever comedies on its debut in 2018, and then a global hit on the Netflix platform.

Historically, television content has largely originated in the United States and spread to other parts of the world. But in recent years, this dynamic has begun to change, with British television shows experiencing a surge in popularity in the U.S. market. This shift can be attributed chiefly to the rise of streaming platforms, which have made international content more accessible to U.S. audiences.
Recent data from Parrot Analytics reveals that British TV shows accounted for nearly 6% of the total demand for TV series in the U.S. during the third quarter of 2023. This figure represents the largest demand share for foreign content, surpassing other notable producers of TV content such as Japan and South Korea.
Impressively, the demand for British shows in the U.S. has grown by 75% over the past three and a half years, outpacing the 65% growth rate for shows from other countries (including the U.

The people person’s paper people could be returning to a screen near you in the next few years. That’s according to Jonathan Handel and Matthew Belloni of Puck News, who say that Greg Daniels — who was responsible for creating the American version of “The Office” — is currently working on a reboot of the NBC comedy.
There were few details available on the project, as it appears to still be in the planning stages. Those plans will be able to continue soon, as Daniels and other Hollywood writers will likely be able to get back to work in the coming weeks. Writers have been pencils-down since May 1 when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike, but a tentative agreement struck over the weekend with producers means that they could be back to work soon.

The service, which has grown more than 300% in three years, and at last report had 3 million subscribers, has now risen its price to $8.99 per month, or $89.99 per year. BritBox carries a host of beloved British programming, including dark and brooding detective shows like “Luther,” the more old-school sleuthing of “Father Brown,” or following Hyacinth Bucket from hedge to hedge as she peeks in her neighbors’ windows in “Keeping Up Appearances.”

This post contains spoilers for "Children of Men."
One of the greatest movie scenes of the 21st century comes early in the dystopian sci-fi masterpiece "Children of Men," as five characters pile into a car for what initially seems like a blissful ride. Though the near future they inhabit is beset by human infertility, all is going well as our protagonist, Theo (Clive Owen), wakes from a backseat nap and begins playing a game with the mother of his late child, Julian (Julianne Moore). She turns from the passenger's seat, and they blow a ping pong ball back and forth, laughing right up until the moment when a flaming car comes rolling downhill ahead of them, followed by a band of marauders, the Zeds.
What follows next is the kind of movie scene the phrase "tour de force" was invented for. As they took to the road in a modified Fiat Multipla,...

ITV has announced the planned closure of its children’s channel Citv.
The channel was launched in 2006 after the success of the Children’s ITV programming block, which launched on ITV in 1983 to provide dedicated late-afternoon programming for children aged between five and 13.

‘This Morning’ Anchors Phillip Schofield, Holly Willoughby Address Queen ‘Queue Jumping’ Accusations
“This Morning” anchors Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby addressed accusations they “queue-jumped” the five-mile long line to visit Queen Elizabeth II lying in state last week.
In a pre-recorded segment at the opening of the show on Tuesday morning, the duo took viewers through a montage of events that took place since the Queen’s death on Sept. 8, from the news breaking to her lying-in-state in Westminster Hall last week.
Alongside footage of Schofield and Willoughby outside Westminster Hall, where they spoke to members of the public who had queued to see the Queen, Willoughby said in a voice-over: “Like hundreds of accredited broadcasters and journalists, we were given official permission to access the Hall. It was strictly for the purpose of reporting on the event for millions of people in the U.K. who haven’t been able to visit Westminster in person.”

Freevee, Amazon’s Fast (free ad-supported streaming TV) platform, has noticeably received more attention from its parent company lately. It was rebranded from IMDb TV to the sleeker sounding Freevee in April and has begun expanding into international markets — first to the U.K. in 2021 and to Germany just this month.
Amazon isn’t alone in focusing on ad-supported streaming. Fast has been growing and shaking up the streaming world. As this model of monetizing viewer attention is catching on, it’s looking like everything old is new again. After all, broadcast TV was the original free ad-supported platform. Today, even Netflix and Disney+ are talking about bringing ads to their subscription models by the end of the year. Fast platforms, which have built their core strategy around an entirely ad-supported model, are suddenly looking prescient.

Austria’s Orf Joins Big Budget Central Europe Drama Series ‘Rise Of The Raven’
The shoot for big-budget Central European drama Rise of the Raven (working title) is underway near Budapest in Hungary, with Austrian pubcaster Orf the latest to join the series as a co-producer. Produced by Robert Lantos, the multi-million dollar series is being billed as “the most epic Central European television production of all time.” It stars Hungary’s Gellért L. Kádár as Janos Hunyadi, the army commander who defeated the vast Ottoman troops in the Battle of Belgrade in 1456. Vivien Rujder plays his life partner Elizabeth Szilagyi in a widely international cast. Also featuring are Austria’s Laurence Rupp (Babarians), Cornelius Obonya (Maria Theresa), Murathan Muslu (Breaking Point), Czech actor Karel Roden, Serbia’s Rade Serbedzija and Italian actors Italy’s Francesco Acquaroli, Thomas Trabacchi (Studio Battaglia) and Elena Rusconi (6 Underground). Balázs Lengyel (HBO’s Golden Life) is showrunner and writer along with George Mihalka, Balázs Lovas, Zsófia Ruttkay, Attila Veres, and Bán Mór, whose best-selling series of novels the series is based on. Serendipity Point Films, Twin Media, Hg Media, Mr Film and Beta, which distributes the show, are the co-producers. TV2 will air it in Hungary and Slovenia, with Orf broadcasting it in neighboring Austria.
Germany’s Sat.1 Remakes Italian Format ‘Back To School’
German broadcaster Sat.1 has remade Mediaset Distribution’s Italian format Back to School. Local producer Cheerio Entertainment has produced the German show, titled Zurück in die Schule, ahead of a debut on August 24. German presenter Jörg Pilawa will host the primetime entertainment show. Back to School sees four celebrities face real elementary school exams, one they have prepared for during a summer camp with students taking on the role of no-nonsense teachers and another ‘surprise’ subject. Mediaset Group’s distribution arm launched the format at MipTV after it debuted in Italy on Italia 1 and secured an above average share. “Everyone likes the idea of mini-teachers having to do with celebrities in an entertaining reversion of roles. After lockdown and sad things continuing to happen, a show that reunites family and target groups of all ages for a good moment of relax and fun. I guess we really need it,” said Claudia Marra, who handles the format rights for Mediaset Distribution.

SandalwoodK Kiranraj’s directorial debut ‘777 Charlie’, which revolves around the life of Dharma (Rakshit Shetty) and his dog (Charlie), has had a successful run at the box-office after its theatrical release on June 10.Saradha UKiranrajThe name of the dog in the film, the artwork on the wall and scenes playing on the television in the background; 777 Charlie director K Kiranraj pays tribute to Charlie Chaplin, an icon of the silent film era, through many scenes in the recently released hit film starring actor Rakshit Shetty in the lead. The director’s indications about his fascination for visual storytelling does not stop with Charlie Chaplin references. We find other hints like the dog carrying a name tag reading ‘Keaton’ as an ode to actor Buster Keaton or Adhrika, the character played by child actor Sharvari, carrying a teddy bear as a subtle homage to actor Rowan Atkinson’s Mr Bean.

When Rotten Tomatoes interviewed filmmaker Werner Herzog on his 2006 film "Rescue Dawn" -- a fictional remake of his documentary "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" -- interviewer Rich Cline asked how lead actor Christian Bale was suited to playing his role. Herzog's answer was blunt and frank: "He's the best of his generation."
Bale had been acting since he was a boy, having broken out at the age of 13 in Steven Spielberg's 1987 film "Empire of the Sun." He appeared in several '90s slumber party staples -- "Newsies," "Swing Kids," "Little Women," "Velvet Goldmine" -- as well as a pile of notable horror and genre films...
