There's no greater fear than the unknown. Our heritage as beings evolved from organisms whose survival instinct was developed thousands of years ago means that we're all afraid of the literal and/or metaphorical dark, if for no better reason than we inherently know that danger can lie in wait within those unseen spaces. With knowledge comes logic, reason, and enlightenment, but there are still many questions about existence without answers, chief among them what else may exist beyond our corporeal forms. The conception of a God or Gods is a comforting one, but as logic follows, the existence of both good and evil in the world could mean that there is no God without a Devil.
It's that ambiguous, unresolved fear we all have about the nature of evil and its potential tangibility that writer/director Osgood Perkins has demonstrated an uncanny knack for tapping into. From his debut,...

Ranker is a popular place on the Internet where people can rank whatever they want, however, they want, and whenever they want. This is always a fan-focused ranking system, and it is never officially tied to the people behind the projects in question. Recently, a large survey was organized on Ranker, whose goal was to determine the best movies of all time. The list includes more than 3,000 titles, but in our report, we have decided to list the top ten titles from the site to provide you with better insight, combined with our original comments and opinions, which will add flavor to the whole report.
Of course, since this is indeed an important list, we have decided to report on it, so we are going to bring you the results by listing the top 10 movies on this list, from 10th to first place. We hope you’ll enjoy it!

HBO’s “True Detective” franchise had been off the air for five years, since its third season concluded in 2019. But all of that changed this year under the stewardship of Mexican filmmaker Issa López (“Tigers Are Not Afraid”), when the series came roaring back into the zeitgeist — with “True Detective: Night Country,” led by stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
The murder mystery revolved around a central question: How did the scientists at the Tsalal research station in Ennis, Alaska end up as a frozen pile of dead naked men on the ice? A corpsicle, if you will! The answer — as uncovered by the true detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) — took the women through a maze of questions, some of which seemed to have no logical explanation: but in the end, very much did. Through their investigative work, they healed themselves — and Ennis too.

Besides Hannibal Lecter's sneering line, "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti," the sight of the serial killer Buffalo Bill (aka Jame Gumb) leaning over a giant well and commanding his terrified captive, "It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again," is one of the most memorable moments from Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs." Jame Gumb's beautiful Victorian style home, complete with a secret well in the basement, is the perfectly sinister place to torture his victims. Conveniently, he was able to weasel his way into occupying the home from his first victims' employer, Mrs. Lippman.
Many of Buffalo Bill's disturbing behaviors are taken from other real-life serial killers. Ted Bundy would fake injuries or disability to lure unsuspecting women into his car, similar to how Jame Gumb...

In films, the leading actor is often referred to as the figure with the majority of screen time, and in most cases, they’re the one who gets the shot at the Best Actor accolade in major Award events. But there have been instances when this wasn’t the case.
Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
For example, Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing everyone’s favorite cannibal in The Silence of the Lambs, even though he appeared onscreen for a mere 24 minutes. However, in The Godfather‘s case, Marlon Brando nabbed the nod for Best Actor at the Oscars, even though Al Pacino fit that bracket on paper.
Ethan Hawke also found himself on a similar boat after starring opposite Denzel Washington in the 2001 crime thriller Training Day, which earned the latter an Oscar for Best Actor.

Before becoming an independent producer and story consultant, filmmaker Rona Edwards spent several years working in creative development for production shingles headed by the likes of John Larroquette (the Emmy-winning actor) and Michael Phillips (the Oscar-winning producer.) Since striking out on her own, Edwards has had her own projects set up in both television and feature film at places like NBC, USA Network, Warner Bros, HBO and Lifetime TV.
With business partner Monika Skerbelis, Edwards also co-wrote the books The Complete Filmmaker’s Guide to Festivals: Your All Access Pass to Launching Your Film on the Festival Circuit and I Liked It, Didn’t Love It: Screenplay Development from the Inside Out, currently in its 3rd edition. The popular Game of Thrones franchise is one of the best-known and most popular adaptations in history. But it is just a drop of water in a vast ocean of adaptations that have been present since the earliest days of cinema. Now, for years, people have been debating whether adaptations are good or not, whether they can properly present a work or not, or whether they can elevate it. While most people will agree that an adaptation cannot be as good as the original, there are examples where an adaptation elevated the original work, like in the case of Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs, where the movie remains far superior to the novel.
Author George R.R. Martin, the author of Game of Thrones, has recently provided his own opinion on the matter and has aligned himself with those who think that adaptations don’t really do much for the works in question.

8. Jigsaw’s Bone-Chilling Question in Saw (2004)
Jigsaw himself is the most terrifying aspect of his titular movie, so no wonder many people still remember his iconic question, “Do you want to play a game?” Except that Jigsaw never inquired about his victims’ desires: he didn’t feel the need to. The actual phrase this horror villain said was, “I want to play a game.” Less sinister, right?
7. Freddy Krueger’s Dirty Language in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Good ol’ Freddy Krueger really messed with poor Nancy’s psyche.Tormenting her in her dreams over and over again, the cheeky bastard didn’t even show an ounce of respect to her, especially when he told her, “I’m your boyfriend now, b*tch.” That’s how most fans remember it — but in the movies Freddy never insulted her like that.

A ‘market with a view’ is how Nem Dubrovnik pitches itself. In a literal sense, the view is of the Adriatic Sea, but in a business sense, the ambition is to create a relaxed setting for execs to meet and do deals, a marked switch-up from the hubbub of many TV markets.
Launching in 2013, Nem Dubrovnik has carved out its calendar moment in June. Over a decade, it has established itself as a key buying and selling confab for the Cee region and beyond, with all of the notable buyers in attendance. The market organizers will grow the space for distributors by 40% this year.
Amazon MGM, Disney, Idtv and Lionsgate will have screenings or showcases. Beta Film, Newen Studios, Rai, and Warner Bros. Discovery are among the big European and international players that will be selling programming at Nem.
The Cee region remains a huge buyer of telenovelas and Turkish drama.

Anthony Hopkins is one of the pillars of British cinema and is most recognizable for his classic works on Hannibal, The Silence of the Lambs, and Amistad, to name a few. But, even with a stellar career, he could not help but sometimes feel disappointed with and unenthusiastic about Hollywood.

It was Bryan Cranston’s work as Walter White in the Breaking Bad franchise that invigorated and inspired Hopkins to believe that there is a future in the entertainment business.

Too often, film trailers tend to give the whole game away. But clearly Osgood Perkins — son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins and director of underrated chiller Gretel & Hansel — didn't get the memo. His latest, Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe-starring occult serial killer chiller Longlegs, has enjoyed an unnerving slew of cryptic teasers and promo posters — and the latest is no different. Check out the new trailer for the film below;
"Is it scary being a lady FBI agent?" an inquisitive kid asks Maika Monroe's (It Follows) Lee Harker. "Yeah," Lee replies. And honestly, on present evidence, that's fair. With its The Silence Of The Lambs-esque combo of crime-thriller procedural and out-and-out horror flourishes, this first full trailer for Perkins' latest has us all kinds of creeped out. From Nicolas Cage's whisper-voiced, straggly-haired weirdo killer, to the satanic symbology and fly-infested crime scenes glimpsed, to the jaundiced Zodiac-esque palette of the whole thing,...

Nicolas Cage is one of the most respected and talented actors in Hollywood. His works have become ingrained in the very fabric of cinema, establishing him as a true legend. A lot of his success can be credited to his diversity as an actor, being able to star in any genre under the sun. From action to romance, science fiction to drama, no classification is too caging for him.
Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Despite this, there is still one beloved genre the actor has been absent from; horror. While he has been in some memorable films, they always tie in with other genres like comedy or thrillers. Serious supernatural films are rarely seen from Cage. That was, until now.

Neon has been playing the long game with their cryptic marketing campaign for Longlegs the past few months, but today brings a more traditional official trailer for the upcoming film.
Longlegs heads to theaters on July 12. Watch the new trailer below, which makes the film’s storyline a bit more clear while still preserving all the creepy mysteries at its dark heart.
The upcoming serial killer horror movie marks the return of director Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel & Hansel). Nicolas Cage stars alongside Maika Monroe, with Monroe playing an FBI agent and Cage playing a serial killer.
Longlegs is said to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers,” and early reviews have favorably compared the film to the classic ’90s thriller The Silence of the Lambs.

Does the Academy hate horror? "Hate" is probably a strong word, but it's not unfair to say the Academy has at least an aversion to the genre. With the notable exception of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs," which swept the Oscars and won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay, the Oscars tend to overlook or ignore horror movies altogether. For (recent) example: many people thought Toni Collette should've at least nabbed a nomination for her incredible work in Ari Aster's "Hereditary," but that didn't happen.
Stephen King knows a thing or two about horror movies, especially since most of his books have been adapted to the screen. When it comes to King's movie adaptations, only one has achieved Oscar glory: "Misery," which earned Kathy Bates a Best Actress Oscar. But if King had his way, another one of his movies would've been recognized by the Academy,...

98 years walking on this earth and over 70 of those working in the industry that he and we all love. How do you talk about a man who had his hands in everything and gave us so much? He was an honorary Oscar winner and heavily involved in the Academy itself. He gave us New Concorde and New World Pictures. Roger Corman was a master of the independent and low budget film and known lovingly as the King of Cult. He gave countless actors, writers, and directors their start and was still making appearances right up to his passing. Theres so much to go over but I think that the best way to honor the man is to bring this video in on time and underbudget, bonus Corman points if we can re-use some of the footage from this one in another one of our videos. Former President Donald Trump was criticized for lauding Hannibal Lecter, the fictional serial killer from the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs while claiming that migrants are being released from “insane asylums” into the U.S. at a weekend rally.
During a speech he made at his New Jersey campaign rally on May 11, Trump claimed that “the mental institution population is down because they’re taking people from insane asylums [in foreign countries] and from mental institutions” and sending them to the U.S.
“You know what the difference is, right,” he asked the crowd. “An insane asylum is a mental institution on steroids.”
“Silence of the Lamb – has anyone ever seen The Silence of the Lambs – the late, great Hannibal Lecter,” Trump added. “He’s a wonderful man. Remember the last scene?”

Frank Capra was a three-time Oscar winner who dominated the box office throughout the 1930s with his populist fables, nicknamed “Capra-corn.” Yet how many of these titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of Capra’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1897 in Siciliy, Italy, Capra came to the United States with his family in 1903. His work often reflected an idealized vision of the American dream, perhaps spurned by his own experiences as an immigrant. Depression-era audiences lapped up his sweetly sentimental screwball comedies, which often centered on the plight of the common man.
He earned his first Oscar nomination for directing “Lady for a Day” (1933), and his loss was infamously embarrassing: when presented Will Rogers opened the envelope, he said, “Come up and get it, Frank!” Capra bounded to the stage, only to learned that Frank Lloyd (“Cavalcade”) has won instead.

Considering how much build-up Longlegs has had – with the stream of teasers, posters and symbols – the horror film had a lot to live up to, at least how it was being marketed. Fortunately for the involved parties, Longlegs looks to be one of the horror flicks to see so far this year, with most praising it for being an unnerving work that features stellar performances and channels The Silence of the Lambs.
Check out some of the early reviews of Longlegs below:

Sir Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar in 2020 and received his sixth Academy Award nomination for “The Father.” With his impressive body of work, it’s somewhat stunning to realize he was 54 years old before he became a household name.
Hopkins was born on New Year’s Eve in 1937 to working-class parents in Wales. He was inspired by fellow Welsh actor Richard Burton to study drama. Young Hopkins found success in theater, eventually becoming an understudy for Laurence Olivier, successfully taking over when Olivier became ill. Although his career was thriving in the theater, Hopkins decided to try his luck in television and films, and soon received his break in 1968 playing Richard the Lionheart in “The Lion in Winter.” Hopkins worked steadily on both the small and big screens, often receiving praise for his work. However, it was over 20 years before he became one of the most recognized actors in the...

Every filmmaker and actor, and literally every other person somehow related to the world of cinema is getting extremely nervous when the Oscars season comes around. While there are definitely several movies that are considered to be chosen as best pictures in advance, still the hope is something that can’t be taken away from anybody.
Winning an Academy Award is very prestigious and is literally the highest honor for work done in the movie industry. But can you imagine the happiness and overall excitement that an Oscar sweep can bring to a team?
Winning 5 major nominations is probably every creative team's dream, but there were only three films that managed to make the dream come true. Let's take a look at the movies that took home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay all at once.

If you are a TV fanatic, you've likely watched your fair share of CW shows. So, you already know that if you've seen an actor in one CW series, you've likely seen them again in another. This means you're probably already familiar with Melissa Roxburgh but don't even realize it.
Starting out in installments of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, the actress transitioned into broadcast television the following year.
To her credit, Melissa Roxburgh has become somewhat of a sci-fi siren of the small screen, often appearing in roles on shows with fantastical elements like time travel or supernatural monsters.
In recent years, she's gained notoriety, having developed a relationship with Netflix the same way she did with the CW. However, beyond being a serial series guest star, Roxburgh has had a handful of significant film roles that have shown she is a powerhouse of talent in her own right.

There is no doubt the typical movie villains are those who are less appealing and not as clever as the protagonists, who must win over them. However, there are some evil characters which are even superior to the good guys in terms of their intelligence.
Here are 7 of the most voiced examples of the extremely intelligent onscreen villains, chosen by Redditors in a recent discussion.
7. Se7en (1995) - John Doe
Kevin Spacey’s serial killer is always ahead of the detectives, while committing his chilling murders inspired by the seven deadly sins. The police don't even know his real name, and when finally catching him, they realize his scheme worked out against them.
6. The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) - Tom Ripley

Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” remains one of the most beloved classic rock songs of the 1980s. Bon Jovi’s co-writer said he wrote it in a place that reminded him of an infamous scene from a horror film. Fascinatingly, the lyrics of an earlier Bon Jovi song partially inspired “You Give Love a Bad Name.”
Bon Jovi’s ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’ has a connection to Kiss
Desmond Child is a professional songwriter who became famous for working with classic rock acts like Alice Cooper (“Poison”), Aerosmith (“Dude Looks Like a Lady”), and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (“I Hate Myself for Lovin’ You”), as well as pop singers such as Katy Perry (“Waking Up in Vegas”), Ricky Martin (“Livin’ la Vida Loca”), and Ava Max (“Kings & Queens”). One of his most famous songs is Kiss’ disco/hard rock smash “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.

“If you hear a fire alarm, take it seriously,” the woman at the podium announced. “Proceed calmly, but exit swiftly.
This was a step beyond the standard “put away your cell phones” introduction, but this was no ordinary movie––we were seated to watch an original nitrate print of George Sidney’s rousing 1950 musical Annie Get Your Gun. Thankfully, Netflix––in their three-year, gorgeous renovation of the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood––retained its ability to screen nitrate, but if Inglourious Basterds taught us anything, it’s that you can trap and kill a hell of a lot of people with ultra-flammable nitrate stock if things go wrong.
It was the most danger I’ve ever been in while watching Howard Keel romance a woman under disreputable circumstances, and he did that often enough. The risk was plenty worthwhile to see the colors of this ostentatious, gaudy, not-a-little-bit-wacky musical really pop...

Norway
At the Abigail premiere, Dan Stevens listed Norway among his four favorite vampire movies. “I just saw a great movie recently that I’d never heard of,” he told Letterboxd. “A Greek film called Norway, about a vampire who basically exists in the underground disco scene in ’80s Athens, and he can’t stop dancing ’cause he’s worried his heart will stop. And it’s lovely. It’s great.”
You won’t find a better endorsement than that, but allow me to elaborate. Imagine Only Lovers Left Alive meets What We Do in the Shadows by way of Yorgos Lanthimos. The...

“You know you can watch that at home, right?” Such was the advice directed my way by a wisecracking passerby while queued up for a screening at the 2024 Turner Classic Movies Film Festival in Hollywood, California. They were clearly not a festival passholder, but the indifference heard right there on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was another instance of the trampling of history that both the festival and its parent channel aim to counter.
Probably the most even-handed response to that trampling would be a reminder—to flip a well-known phrase—that a home is not a house (not a movie house anyway). The folks who flock to Los Angeles every year from all over the world to attend this festival, probably all subscribers or rabid devotees of the channel that bears its name, cough up a prodigious amount of money to do so. Jodie Foster is undoubtedly one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood. The actress made a name for herself by playing the young prostitute Iris Steensma in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, after having appeared in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore two years prior. But, while her filmography includes some important titles like The Accused (1988), Sommersby (1993), Maverick (1994), Contact (1997), Anna and the King (1999), Panic Room (2002), Flightplan (2005), Inside Man (2006), The Brave One (2007), Nim’s Island (2008), Carnage (2011), Elysium (2013), The Mauritanian (2021), and Nyad (2023), her best-known role is that of Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, which also brought her her second Oscar. Recently, she also appeared in True Detective: Night Country.
But, while she has definitely gathered a large number of major roles, she has also – as you might have assumed – rejected and lost several other major roles, and from what we know now, one of these roles was a major Star Wars role.

It's been more than two decades since Naoki Urasawa started publishing a manga based on a story arc from Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy. Urasawa changed many details in his reinterpretation, but his new version of the story has been capturing the public imagination since its first issue in 2003.
Now the reinterpretation has been interpreted again – as an animated series. And it turns out, it's really, really good.
So What's The Story?
Pluto takes place in the aftermath of a massive war involving both humans and robots. Now the world is at peace, and thanks to new laws (and programming) it's been eight years since a robot has killed a human. Robots are also now granted equal rights.

When it comes to psychological horror films, few have achieved the chilling impact and critical acclaim of Anthony Hopkins‘ The Silence of the Lambs. With its gripping narrative and spine-tingling atmosphere, the film has rightfully earned its place among the greatest in cinematic history, earning five Oscars and widespread acclaim.

Yet, amidst the crowd of horror classics, there exists a film that goes beyond mere scares, into the realm of controversy and legal turmoil that few filmmakers dare to tread. Released in 1980, Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust seemed too realistic and authentic when it came to the gory scenes that the filmmaker would end up being arrested and charged with murder.

Jodie Foster is having a good year. The two-time Oscar winner returned to the attention of the academy for the first time since 1995 with a nomination for “Nyad.” Now, she and showrunner Issa López have revamped HBO’s flagging “True Detective” with the best entry since the show’s first season.
“True Detective: Night Country” stars Foster as an acid-tongue, spiky police chief who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Playing a detective will naturally harken viewers’ minds back to her turn as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar (“The Accused” being the other). It’s her meatiest role in years and Foster devours it.
Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) observed: “Our unsteady guiding hand through this darkness is Liz Danvers, played with icy perfection by Jodie Foster.

Sydney Sweeney has always had a knack for playing crazy characters, which made her experience filming Euphoria so much fun, as she loved the challenging and crazy aspect of Cassie Howard. And with her recent feature Immaculate, Sweeney, who has made some really interesting career choices lately, has finally jumped into the genre she adores the most.
Following her commitment to Immaculate, it comes as no surprise that she has been a lifelong horror fan, who once dreamt of helming crazy roles along the likes of Hannibal Lecter and Jack Torrance.
Sydney Sweeney’s Dream Role Involve Characters Like Jack Torrance and Hannibal Lecter The Silence of the Lambs | Orion Pictures
Being a horror buff, Sydney Sweeney holds a deep admiration for classics that defined the genre, which involves The Shining, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs. While with Immaculate, she cements herself as the genre’s new final girl.

In 1982, Jonathan Demme directed a lovely TV movie called “Who Am I This Time?” about a shy actor (Christopher Walken) who can only reveal himself on stage in a variety of disparate roles. It’s an emblematic title and idea for Demme himself, a director whose fascination for the viewer lies in the fact that he’s paradoxically both an auteur with a clear signature and a director who tried on different artistic personalities throughout his career. There’s the exploitation guerrilla of the early ’70s; the humanist drama specialist who made “Melvin and Howard,” “Philadelphia,” and “Rachel Getting Married”; the off-beat hipster comedian; the sensitive documentarian; the live performance specialist; and the steward of well resourced, star-driven literary adaptations and remakes that became Demme’s specialty after his blockbuster success with “The Silence of the Lambs” in 1991.

New in theaters is “One Life” starring legendary actor Anthony Hopkins as real-life British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton. Just three years ago he led French playwright Florian Zeller‘s feature directorial debut “The Father.” It not only managed to win him a second Oscar for Best Actor following “The Silence of the Lambs” back in 1991, but it also made headlines. One reason was how it was unconventionally the final award presented during the telecast that year because the sentimental favorite, Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), was widely expected to win posthumously. Hopkins pulled off a huge upset, though, and he wasn’t even there to accept it. How did that win happen? Here are five reasons.
