President Joe Biden marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day in a speech with a warning of current perils to democracy, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the risks of a fracturing of the NATO alliance.
Before dozens of surviving veterans, a number of them centenarians who traveled for the Normandy ceremony, Biden said, “We are not far off from the time, the last living voices of those who fought and bled on D-Day will no longer be with us. So we have a special obligation. We cannot let what happened here be lost in the silence of years to come.”
Among those in the crowd were Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, whose Saving Private Ryan and Band Of Brothers helped elevate the stories of D-Day — including the sacrifices and heroism of servicemen — to new generations. It’s been two years since one of the worst school shootings in American history. On May 24, 2022, a gunman killed 21 at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Nineteen children were among the victims, and two teachers. It’s the kind of tragedy so horrific that outsiders to the community of 15,000 will think of it first whenever they hear the name Uvalde. And probably will for decades to come.
ABC News’ Investigative Unit wanted to go deeper. A couple of days after the shooting, the news network committed to a program called Uvalde: 365, in which they would keep journalists in Uvalde for an entire year to better understand how a small town handles the aftermath of such a tragedy, and how life goes on. The result is a unique documentary called “Print It Black,” referring to how the local newspaper, the Uvalde Leader-News, chose to run an edition the day after...

“The gatekeepers are gone,” Colin Jost told a roomful of journalists at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 27, before pivoting to the punchline: “Did you know that 90 percent of people now get their news exclusively from social media? And that must be true because I saw it in a random guy’s TikTok.”
For those (ever fewer) media gatekeepers who have major reach, trust is currency. And there’s still a halo effect for those TV stars with broadest viewership — i.e., network TV hosts — particularly evening and morning show anchors for NBC and ABC, a new THR/Morning Consult poll shows. The survey, conducted May 4-5 among a sample of 2,239 U.S. adults, asked opinions about 40-plus major TV news stars, as well as surveyed trends about America’s fractured media diet during a presidential campaign year.

ABC News’ David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate the second presidential debate on Sept. 10.
Joe Biden and Donald Trump said that they would participate in the event, to be their second matchup this cycle. CNN is hosting the first debate, scheduled for June 27 at its Atlanta headquarters, with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash moderating.
ABC News has not announced the format for its debate, although one source said that it will be in studio as well. The announcement of the moderators was made on World News Tonight, which Muir anchors. Davis anchors the streaming newscast ABC News Live Prime.
This will be the first time that Muir or Davis has moderated a general election debate. The last ABC News personality to do so was Martha Raddatz, who co-moderated a debate with CNN’s Anderson Cooper in 2016.

Kim Godwin hoped to build ABC News’ future by cutting out some of its past.
Tasked, ostensibly, with shaking up a culture of the Disney-backed news organization that pit anchors against one another and led to claims of intolerable behavior behind the scenes, Godwin was supposed to revamp a storied journalism hub without losing any of the impetus that spurred employees to make shows such as “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America” the most-watched in their category.
But the ABC News president, who was still working Monday after sending out a letter Sunday announcing her retirement following a shaky three-year reign, lost the support of much of the news operation by installing an array of senior executives who proved difficult to work with, while ousting veterans who had the respect of their colleagues. She also moved slowly, often taking weeks to make important decisions about programming and personnel, according...

Updated, with additional details: After weeks of speculation, Kim Godwin is leaving her post as president of ABC News.
Debra OConnell, who added ABC News to her portfolio in February, will run the department in the interim. She made the announcement internally, with Godwin also addressing her staff. You can read the memos below.
At the time of OConnell’s February promotion when ABC News was put under her purview, Disney countered speculation about Godwin’s future by revealing that she had extended her contract to continue as ABC News president. But she was now reporting to OConnell, adding an additional layer between her and Dana Walden, the co-chairman of Disney Entertainment.
The exit follows CNN reports last week about frustration among ABC News staffers about Godwin’s management style that had been reportedly articulated to OConnell in her review of the division and its leadership.

Kim Godwin, the ABC News president who was the first Black woman to run a broadcast network news operation, is leaving the Disney unit amid increasing concern about the way she was managing the home of shows like “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.”
Godwin told staffers in a memo Sunday that she planned to “retire from broadcast journalism.” Her command had come under increasing scrutiny since a restructuring of ABC News and Disney’s ABC stations had her reporting directly to Debra OConnell, a Disney business veteran who is seen as a valued operator at the company. OConnell will lead ABC News for the foreseeable future, she told employees Sunday evening.
A Disney spokesperson declined to make executives available for additional comment or to respond to a query about what changes Godwin’s exit might mean for the executive’s immediate direct reports or the management of individual ABC News programs.

Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes admitted they “know how it feels” for their former colleague Rob Marciano to lose his job at ABC and have rumors “upend” their lives.
The couple opened up on their podcast about the World News Tonight and GMA weatherman’s firing, discussing the recent story that made headlines.
During their podcast, the couple shared what they knew of Marciano from working with him and mentioned there were “sketchy” details related to what they’d seen about his firing.
They also indicated that they “walked down that road” before, referring to their situation at ABC News over a year ago.
Robach and Holmes co-hosted ABC’s GMA3 but were terminated by the network in early 2023 after they made headlines for what some deemed a scandalous affair, as they each had spouses.
They’ve discussed aspects of their relationship and terminations following the debut of their iHeartRadio podcast last December.

Rob Marciano has reportedly been fired from ABC after previously being pulled from the air over alleged “anger management issues.”
The veteran ABC News meteorologist’s termination follows earlier reports that he was temporarily taken off air and “banned” from GMA studios in New York’s Times Square.
The veteran weatherman reportedly received the ban due to reports last year that he made one of his colleagues feel uncomfortable.
Marciano appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America and World News Tonight for over 10 years.
He last appeared in an April 28 report for Earth Week in Shreveport, Louisiana, discussing the destruction and devastation caused by hurricanes Rita and Katrina.
Marciano reposted his report from the network last week, ahead of his reported termination. In addition, reports indicated he’d shared content from the network on his Instagram Stories Tuesday.

It seems that ABC has fired Good Morning America and ABC News meteorologist Rob Marciano. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he is “no longer employed by the news division.”
Dylan Byers from Puck posted a tweet on X earlier today saying,
Scoop @PuckNews: Rob Marciano, the ABC News & Good Morning America meteorologist, has been fired from the network, per sources familiar. Multiple staffers had made complaints about Marciano’s behavior over the years and he was at least temporarily barred from main GMA set in NYC.

It is unclear exactly why Marciano was officially removed, although THR indicated that he was banned from the studio for months but returned in March. Their source for this was Page Six.
According to Page Six he was banned from the GMA studio.
“There’s a reason why ABC weatherman Rob Marciano hasn’t reported from the “Good Morning America” studio for nearly a year.

That’s what ABC News Live anchor Linsey Davis said, standing alongside “World News Tonight” host David Muir on the edge of Lake Champlain as the 2024 solar eclipse was just emerging from totality.
She’s right of course — as odd as it is to hear a TV anchor downplay the experience of watching TV. But with its two-hour live afternoon broadcast April 8, ABC News and National Geographic captured a sense of beauty almost completely foreign to the TV news landscape today, and found a way to preserve this moment of time with a pristine clarity and brilliance that technology’s made possible only recently.
Other networks devoted their airtime to the eclipse. CBS cut in, as well, and spent considerable time on a mass wedding being staged when the total eclipse came to Russellville, Arkansas; CNN had a reporter at a zoo in...

In the pre-coverage of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the speech is being billed as the most important of his presidency, what with his dismal approval numbers and what is shaping up to be very difficult campaign for reelection.
Moreover, so much attention has been paid to the president’s age — at 81, he is the first octogenarian on a major party ticket — that any kind of slip up will be seized upon by his rivals.
Then again, Biden’s most memorable moment last year was an exchange with House Republicans over Social Security, showing that the president had command of the stage. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see if GOP members restrain themselves so as to not give the president the opportunity this year.

Following today’s announcement that CBS has renewed “The Young and the Restless” for four additional seasons, which will take the show through its 55th season and keep it on the air through at least the 2027-2028 TV season, many have wondered what that meant for sister soap “The Bold and the Beautiful.” It turns out the show will also continue, albeit for at least one additional season.
According to a report by TV Line, during the half-hour soap’s last renewal order, CBS included an additional option year, which means that when the network ordered two additional seasons back in March 2022, it also had the option to extend that order to a third season. TV Line notes via a CBS insider that the network “will” exercise that option, which means the show will continue through at least the 2024-2025 TV season and makes a formal renewal announcement a moot point.

Kate Snow, the NBC News veteran who has anchored the network’s Sunday broadcast of “NBC Nightly News” since 2015, plans to exit the post next week, she disclosed to viewers of the program Sunday evening, citing growing responsibilities tied to streaming content.
The move may be a sign that her presence is needed elsewhere. Snow, who is also a senior national correspondent for NBC News, has since September of 2022 co-anchored parts of “NBC News Daily,” a set of daytime hours that both stream on NBC News Now and appear in the daytime schedules of all NBC affiliates. NBC News has placed increasing emphasis on reaching viewers with streaming content, and has continued to expand the original programming it offers in that venue. Those duties, plus those that have Snow reporting on stories during the week for “Today” and the weekday broadcasts of “NBC Nightly News,” have begun to add up.

Kim Godwin has extended her deal to remain as president of ABC News.
The announcement was made shortly after Disney announced that Debra OConnell was being elevated to a newly created role as president, News Group and Networks, Disney Entertainment, adding ABC News to her purview that includes the ABC Owned Television Stations and P&l responsibilities across the Disney multiplatform linear entertainment networks. Godwin, along with Chad Matthews, reports to OConnell, adding an additional layer of reporting structure between her and Dana Walden, co-chairman, Disney Entertainment.
“To officially join ABC News with our owned television stations, working with Chad Matthews and under Debra’s leadership, will allow us to better amplify the incredible work we all produce daily,” Godwin wrote in a note to staffers. “Debra and I have collaborated over the last couple of years, and she is a dedicated leader who always champions the best in journalism.

Another major media company is merging its news division and its local stations in hopes of wringing new profits from two businesses that are being hurt by the rise of streaming video.
Disney will place the veteran executive Debra OConnell atop a new division that encompasses ABC News and its local station operations, with ABC News President Kim Godwin and Stations President Chad Matthews reporting to her. The structure is similar to one Paramount Global put in place last year when it folded CBS News, local CBS stations and syndication under a single executive, Wendy McMahon.
As president of news group and networks for Disney Entertainment, OConnell will report to Dana Walden, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment. Godwin, meanwhile, has renewed her contract to stay in her current role, even though she will have a new layer of management between her and top Disney executives.

ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff, who was severely injured in a roadside bombing while covering Iraq in 2006, is returning to the country — and the exact spot where he was hurt — in a new special. Lester Holt may be turning up more frequently in David Muir’s rear-view mirror.
During Muir’s tenure at “World News Tonight,” the ABC program has done something most TV programs cannot do in the streaming era: Add new linear viewers. Yet in recent weeks one of the evening-news program’s competitors has nibbled at its lead in a crucial category of viewer.
Over the past few weeks, a handful of “NBC Nightly News” broadcasts have trumped “World News Tonight” among viewers between 25 and 54 — the demographic coveted most by advertisers in news programming. To be sure, “World News Tonight” maintains the dominance in the category it has enjoyed under Muir’s aegis.
For three consecutive weeks, “NBC Nightly News” has won a victory in the 25-to-54 demo on at least one night — the first time that has happened since December of 2019. The “Nightly” victories come amid coverage of the Israel-Hamas...

Lester Holt joined NBC News’ efforts to cover terrorist attacks in Israel by flying first to London, then Amman. The journey took hours, and it’s unclear when it all will truly end.
“I think this will be a long TV deployment,” says the “NBC Nightly News” anchor of coverage of terrorists’ moves against the country. Holt is expected to anchor from Israel through this week.
He is one of many from NBC News who have traveled to cover the unrest. Richard Engel, the popular foreign correspondent, is also at work, as are crews devoted to logistics, technology and more. “It’s hard to know what direction this thing will take,” says Holt, speaking from Israel by phone. “It could become a full military invasion, which has a lot of international consequences. It could just be a regional conflict.”
NBC News has many rivals in the area also seeking stories.

Portions of the speech were carried on major cable news networks, with translation. CNN featured a split screen of Netanyahu and network correspondent Hadas Gold translating for viewers.

Deborah Roberts is taking up co-anchor duties at ABC News’ “20/20,” the latest in a line of distinguished anchors that includes Barbara Walters, Hugh Downs, Diane Sawyer, Connie Chung and Elizabeth Vargas who have led the long-running newsmagazine.
Roberts is no stranger to the series’ rhythms. She has been contributing to it for 28 years, ever since she joined ABC News in 1995, recruited by Barbara Walters. She will co-anchor the program with David Muir, who has been with the series since 2013. “Deborah brings her love of storytelling, her deep commitment to the truth, and most of all, her humanity to everything she does,” says Muir. “I cannot wait to stand beside her on ‘20/20.'”
Roberts believes her new role will give her a new sense of belonging to the series’ staff, particularly as ABC News has been working to expand how “20/20” is consumed by its audience. “Once you have...

Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) return to fictional TV network Uba in new roles in The Morning Show Season 3. Premiering Wednesday, September 13, on Apple TV+, the drama’s new installment finds Alex hitting big with Alex Unfiltered, her solo show created during her rough bout with Covid. Also riding solo in the episode is Bradley, who’s now anchoring the nightly news and is getting award recognition for her efforts. Network news anchors juggling multiple gigs is one of the many ways The Morning Show pulls from its real-life inspirations. Robin Roberts, for example, has been one of ABC‘s most recognizable faces for decades thanks to her work as co-anchor of Good Morning America and her contributions to World News Tonight, 20/20, and ESPN (part of the ABC umbrella). Over at NBC, Al Roker serves as weatherman and feature anchor for Today in addition to co-hosting Today‘s third hour.

It’s a streaming world, and we’re just living in it.
It is no secret that streaming dominates the TV landscape, but Nielsen measured a new (and somewhat grim) milestone for broadcast and cable in July’s edition of the company’s monthly state of TV report, The Gauge.
For the first time, linear TV viewership accounted for less than 50% of all TV usage in a measurement month.
According to Nielsen, broadcast and cable each represented record low shares at 20% and 29.6% of total TV usage, respectively, to combine for a linear television total of 49.6%. Compared to this time last year, broadcast viewing was down 5.4%, and cable viewing was down 12.5%.
On a month-over-month basis, broadcast viewing fell 3.6% in July and cable viewing was down 2.9%. Nielsen reports that dramas remained the top broadcast genre, but the top programs of the month were actually ABC World News Tonight and the MLB All Star Game on Fox.

The revolving door of CNN leaders continues. As of Wednesday, Chris Licht was officially out as the CEO and chairman of the news network and four executive vice presidents are overseeing CNN in the interim: Amy Entelis, Virginia Moseley, Eric Sherling and David Leavy. But according to insiders who spoke with TheWrap, Entelis has emerged as the top candidate for the chief executive job.
Licht’s time as CEO was short and controversial. He lasted a little more than a year after taking the job from Jeff Zucker, who held it for nearly a decade before being ousted due to his relationship with executive Allison Gollust. Some people only get one chance to run CNN. Amy Entelis is about to embark on her second.
The veteran news executive was one of three who took the reins at the Warner Bros. Discovery news outlet when Jeff Zucker, the previous chief, was forced out in February of last year after acknowledging a romantic relationship with Allison Gollust, once CNN’s chief marketing officer. Now Entelis will be part of a new trio leading the news giant after the Wednesday departure of former CEO Chris Licht.
The challenges facing CNN have not diminished. Entelis will guide CNN’s news operations along with Virginia Moseley, recently named to oversee editorial operations, and Eric Sherling, recently appointed head of U.S. programming. David Leavy, a longtime Zaslav lieutenant who was named chief operating officer at CNN last week, will oversee business activities. The entire group must keep CNN moving forward as...

“I am not going to be sharing my opinions — I never have in my career, and I don’t plan on starting” with “Elizabeth Vargas Reports,” Vargas told TheWrap. “It’ll be an in-depth look at the most important stories of the day … I think what we want to avoid [is] falling into the trap of being highly partisan in the way we cover it.”
“Elizabeth Vargas Reports,” which launches April 3 and airs weeknights at 6 p.m. Et, will present an hour-long deep dive of the most important stories to people across the country, not just the Beltway, Vargas notes, featuring live interviews that provide “nuance and context” to the day’s news. When NBC News announced in January that Hallie Jackson, its senior Washington correspondent, would leave the anchoring duties she had held at MSNBC since 2016, some eyebrows rose. But NBC News was chasing something else on the rise: Digital audiences.
Since Jackson began anchoring a late-afternoon hour on NBC News Now in December 2021, a growing audience has sought her out. Viewership surged 108% over the course of a year. “You don’t see those numbers in many businesses,” says Janelle Rodriguez, the NBC News executive vice president who oversees the streaming outlet, in an interview. “When you see that level of audience increase, you know you are on to something,” On Monday, Jackson will double her time on her program, “Hallie Jackson Now,” to two hours, which means she will hold forth from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Today with Hoda and Jenna has been missing one-half of its co-hosts for about a week, and fans are concerned. Hoda Kotb was last seen with Jenna Bush Hager during the Presidents Day episode on February 20, but it was revealed the holiday episode was pre-recorded the same day as her last live appearance on February 17. World News Tonight anchor Tom Llamas and Today 3rd Hour co-host Craig Melvin has subbed for Kotb over the last week alongside Savannah Guthrie. Meanwhile, Willie Geist from Sunday Today and Sheinelle Jones of Today 3rd Hour have filled in for Kotb’s fourth-hour duties with Bush Hager, 41. The 58-year-old co-host’s podcast Making Space also did not update with a new episode during its usual 4 am spot. Guthrie and Hager have not announced any details behind Kotb’s absence outside of saying she’s “out” or introducing a guest anchor for whose replacing her for that day.
