When it comes to Fallout‘s breakout TV success, no one is more pleasantly surprised than star Walton Goggins, who plays fan-favorite The Ghoul in Prime Video‘s post-apocalyptic series. “To be quite honest with you, no. No one really expected it,” Goggins told TV Insider on the red carpet at the inaugural Gotham TV Awards on June 4. It “is a lovely surprise really, because you don’t make it for that,” he added of the show’s breakout success. “I’ve been doing this a very long time,” Goggins went on. “The Shield had its audience, Justified had its audience, [The Righteous] Gemstones has its audience, Vice Principals had [its audience]. I’ve done 15 shows and they’ve all spoken to a group of people, but this one has spoken to a much bigger group.” Prime Video To put into perspective the bigger group that Fallout has spoken to, the series became a global hit,...

Walton Goggins Says Making ‘The White Lotus’ Is ‘Meta on Every Level’: ‘We’re Guests…Playing Guests’
Walton Goggins has been around for a while. His first credited acting roles date back to 1992, when he would’ve only been 21, and his supporting turns on FX’s “The Shield” and “Justified” helped him craft an image that appealed to the likes of big-name directors like Quintin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg. Goggins, now 52, is taking on roles he never would’ve dreamed of, like his standout performance as The Ghoul in Amazon Prime’s television adaptation of the “Fallout” video-game series and an upcoming role in the highly anticipated third season of HBO’s “The White Lotus.” However, in a recent interview with the LA Times, Goggins remembered a time in his career where his success wasn’t looking like a certainty.
“I was talking to my agent,” Goggins said, reflecting on a lull in work, “and asked him, ‘Why is it so hard?’ And he said, ‘It isn’t hard,...

10. 11.22.63 (2016)
A large part of Fallout’s charm is its retro futurism that makes use of the 1960–1970s aesthetic. If you’re a sucker for that aesthetic, look no further than 11.22.63: in this sci-fi drama, we travel into the past alongside James Franco to try and prevent Kennedy’s assassination… And grow terrifyingly close to his new life in the past.
You can watch 11.22.63 on Apple TV and Prime Video.
9. The Shield (2002–2008)
Another big hook of Fallout is the complete lawlessness of the Wasteland despite there being some people who call themself “the law.” If you’re into that whole “dirty and corrupt law enforcers” kind of thing, The Shield is for you: set in a fictional completely lawless district of LA, this show follows a unit of really, really bad cops.
You can watch The Shield on Hulu and Prime Video.

Today, Netflix announced the start of production in Calgary on Season 1 of The Abandons, a pulse-pounding action drama set in the West by Kurt Sutter via his SutterInk banner.
“I am fascinated by the metamorphosis of good into evil. What must transpire to drive the morally sound to become the dangerously corrupt,” said Sutter. “The Abandons explores those complex compromises through the most powerful human instinct — the love and protection of mothers.”
As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back.

Almost every episode of The Shield begins the same way, with a quick look at what previously happened on The Shield. This was neither new nor uncommon for TV in the early 2000s, when Shawn Ryan’s gritty Los Angeles cop drama premiered on FX. If you watched ’90s network hits like ER or The X-Files, you were well-acquainted with recap sequences, those tightly edited opening montages designed to jog the audience’s memory of past plot points.
But on The Shield, such reminders were less a courtesy than a necessity. Skip the opening 60 seconds of this show and you risked feeling lost over the 40 minutes that followed, because there was a good chance they would involve something you had forgotten about, something even the characters had filed away as yesterday’s news.

Walton Goggins, the ghoulish antihero of Prime Video's Fallout series, has become an unexpected sex symbol with the show's success.
Undoubtedly, the reason is the character of Ghoul. Goggins combines a hardened survivalist's anarchic mind with a Hollywood cowboy's rustic stoicism.
He feels like Ronald Reagan channeling John Wayne, like a man at the end of his days who sticks around for one more horseback ride.
The resignation in his attitude drives his character, not to mention the characters around him who react to his infamy and monstrous appearance. He's the new face of anarchy and arguably the first mainstream character to embody the spirit of anarchy with such a genteel facade.
You must be in love with Cooper Howard, aka The Ghoul, because you've seen Walton Goggin's face many times.

Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.
Aside from the fact that the current economic realities of the TV business will likely never support another drama going to 21 seasons, broadcast networks will also likely never take chances on so many unconventional ideas: a sci-fi drama on a deserted island that set the tone for modern genre fare, a...

What do we want from a spinoff? More time with a favorite supporting character, as with Frasier or Better Call Saul? An expansion of a compelling mythos, as with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or House of the Dragon? Or perhaps a deeper exploration of some potent themes, as with Rugrats offshoot All Grown Up?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel fulfilled all of those criteria and more.
Premiering in 1999, with its first four seasons running concurrently with Buffy, Angel’s eponymous hero was a reformed vampire, the ex-lover of his parent show’s titular Slayer. The spinoff imported several other characters from Buffy, transplanting them from the small town milieu of Sunnydale to the sinister sprawl of Los Angeles, a darker, more complex setting where demons and vampires rubbed shoulders with high powered lawyers and politicians. Police dramas are one of the most popular genres of television content, a source of stories, many of which may not be suitable for a full-length movie, but fit perfectly into a short episode format. Police series are not only exciting, shocking and entertaining stories, but also a unique opportunity to take a closer look at the life and work of law enforcement.

A breath of fresh air for traditional commercial television was Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, especially in an era when streaming services and binge-worthy content ruled the television landscape.

Everyone loves a good rags-to-riches story, and showbiz is full of such examples, with the most notable ones involving the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Demi Moore, Jim Carrey, etc. Walton Goggins, known for leaning into playing morally ambiguous characters, whose recent work involves the Fallout show, shares a similar story, as it took him a while to find his footing in Hollywood.
While Goggins eventually rose to prominence in the 2000s, he didn’t have the smoothest of starts, as during his arrival to LA at the age of 19, he only had a mere $300 under his belt.
Despite his rise being gradual, it turned out to be fruitful.

When you first see The Ghoul in “Fallout,” the most pronounced feature of Walton Goggins’ character is what’s missing. Just under the brim of his weathered cowboy hat and just above his wrinkled upper lip — you know, where his nose should be — there isn’t one. You can see the narrow nostril-dividing tissue, but there are no nostrils to divide. Instead, there’s just an A-shaped hole in his face. A cavity. An absence. So even though it’s obvious the handsome charmer from “Justified” is there, buried under a pound of latex, Prime Video viewers may not realize the physical demands of a role visibly defined by what’s been removed.
“I can’t see so well. I mean, I could see, but your periphery is gone,” Goggins said in an interview with IndieWire. “I’ve got these things over my teeth, so it’s hard to talk.

They showed us something deeper — the mindset of a champion haunted by past betrayals. Fans are saying that this blunder cost him the match, but it was more like his way of seeking revenge.

Lennon is currently the showrunner on the hit Starz/Lionsgate TV spinoff series “Power Book IV: Force,” which was renewed for a third season back in December. Under his deal, he will work with Lionsgate Television and Starz to develop expansions of the “Power” franchise.
“Gary has been a major creative force in the ‘Power’ universe,” said Kevin Beggs, Lionsgate Television Group chair and chief creative officer. “We look forward to extending our partnership as we collaborate with Starz to create new and unexpected franchise extensions for ‘Power’ fans.”
Lennon previously worked on “Power” during the show’s six-season run at Starz. He has also worked on the Starz/Lionsgate shows “Hightown” and “P-Valley,” as well as the Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” which was produced by Lionsgate Television.
“Lionsgate Television has been the ideal production partner,” said Lennon.

WWE Monday Night Raw kicked off this week by addressing The Rock’s challenge from SmackDown. Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins focused on taking down The People’s Champion, which also came with a big announcement.
Rollins hurt his knee in a match against Jinder Mahal on the Jan. 15 episode of WWE Raw. He was in pain after a move landed awkwardly.

Still, Rollins managed to finish the match and retain his championship by pinning Mahal. However, due to his injury, the 37-year-old had to skip some live events.
Now, he has received full medical clearance. He confirmed his appearance on SmackDown this week to confront the Bloodline, stating he’s prepared and ready for action.
Despite facing an injury, Rollins is determined to confront Johnson and his cousin alongside Cody Rhodes, showing his refusal to take the easier path.

It’s impossible to imagine any modern work of fiction from a relatively unknown author creating the sort of cultural impact made by James Clavell’s 1975 novel Shogun.
In the 49 years since its publication, the book has sold 15 million copies and served as the inspiration for a Broadway musical, multiple video games, and an Emmy-winning five-part miniseries.
Now, FX and Hulu are hoping that a new generation will be equally captivated by Clavell's story of clashing cultures and violent power struggles in feudal Japan.
A ten-part adaptation of Shogun starring Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Cosmo Jarvis will premiere simultaneously on the network and the streaming service on February 27.
Of course, we doubt that the dual platforms are anticipating an effect as profound as the one made by the version produced by NBC in 1980.
Still, among both industry insiders and grownup viewers seeking grownup content, there's a hope that Shogun...

FX’s John Landgraf is not sure the media ecosystem supports television shows that run beyond just a few seasons.
“I think our attention spans have declined radically and I think our patience with things that are a little demanding have gone down,” Landgraf said during his annual executive session at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “It’s something I’m really worried about in the media ecosystem created by the internet.”
The remarks came after Landgraf gave his annual update on the number of scripted series on television, with his data showing that Peak TV has in fact peaked. The total number of scripted shows declined 14% between 2022 and 2023, dropping from 600 to 516.
“We’ve radically increased the cost of making television in season one,” he said. “We brought a lot of wonderful talent into television, but there’s been a spiraling and escalating cost. That’s part of...
