"Arcane" is one of the best animated shows of the past decade, a masterclass in adapting and reinterpreting a popular franchise for a different medium. Studio Fortiche delivered one of the most stunning pieces of animation in years with this show, which draws from the world of the hugely popular video game franchise "League of Legends."
The story follows a group of characters across the socioeconomic spectrum in the dual city of Piltover and Zaun. They are caught in the middle of a revolution when the discovery of a century is made — arcane technology, which is essentially magic. There are compelling characters and stories, exquisite worldbuilding, and gorgeous fight scenes to boot.
"Arcane" also boasts a fantastic voice cast that includes Hailee Steinfeld, Ella Purnell, Katie Leung, and many more actors who are set to return for season 2.

Los Angeles, CA – Eight-time Emmy Award winner Andrea Romano further cemented her reputation as the greatest voiceover director in animation history on Sunday night when she was inducted into the prestigious Children’s & Family Emmys’ inaugural Silver Circle during a ceremony at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.
The Silver Circle recognizes those professionals who have performed distinguished service within the television industry for 25 years or more. But the recognition goes well beyond their longevity – they are honored for making an enduring contribution to the vitality of the television industry and for setting standards of achievement the rest of the industry hopes to emulate. These honorees also give back to the community as mentors, educators and volunteers.
“This industry has given me so much, from wonderful relationships with actors and marvelously creative individuals throughout the animation world to a lifetime of incredible memories and fulfilling work,” Romano said. “I’m so flattered that,...

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender series isn’t the first time the iconic animated show has made the leap to live-action. M. Night Shyamalan previously adapted the series with The Last Airbender in 2010, but Avatar fans have been eager to forget that it even exists.
Albert Kim, the showrunner behind the upcoming Netflix series, told Entertainment Weekly that he has actively avoided watching Shyamalan’s Avatar movie. “I’ll tell you something, I never watched the Shyamalan movie,” Kim said. “There was a period of time where I thought I should watch it, but then I thought, I don’t really want those images in my head as I start to go forward with our version of this project. So I avoided it purposefully.“
Although Kim never watched the movie, he is aware of the criticisms the movie faced. “I knew what fans didn’t like about it in general,...

Here’s the synopsis: Water. Earth. Fire. Air. The four nations once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the Air Nomads, the first step taken by the firebenders towards conquering the world. With the current incarnation of the Avatar yet to emerge, the world has lost hope.
But like a light in the darkness, hope springs forth when Aang (Gordon Cormier), a young Air Nomad — and the last of his kind — reawakens to take his rightful place as the next Avatar.

Netflix has given us more first look images of Avatar: The Last Airbender, one of the most highly anticipated fantasy shows premiering in 2024.
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, is shaping up really well. Fans have already seen the animated show foray to live-action in 2010 thanks to M. Night Shyamalan’s movie, which was panned by both fans and critics. Needless to say, there’s plenty of apprehension going into the latest remake, but so far, Netflix seems to have done the source material justice.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the most acclaimed and beloved cartoons of all time. This is a show with incredible worldbuilding, visual style, and character development.
Despite the success of the animated series (and its equally great sequel series), "The Last Airbender" has had terrible luck with adaptations. First, there was the best-forgotten M. Night Shyamalan live-action movie which missed everything people liked about the show. Now, it is Netflix's turn to try with a TV adaptation titled, well, "Avatar: The Last Airbender."
Not only did this latest adaptation have to deal with the awfully poor expectations from fans, but it also suffered a devastating blow early on when original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino departed due to creative differences. Granted, following that piece of bad news we also got the creation of Avatar Studios and multiple other Avatar projects in development, but the move...

When Netflix announced their live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, fans were thrilled to learn that original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino were involved. However, the Avatar creators exited the project in 2020 due to creative differences. “Many of you have been asking me for updates about the ‘Avatar’ live-action Netflix series,” Dimartino wrote in a blog post. “I can finally tell you that I am no longer involved with the project. In June of this year, after two years of development work, Bryan Konietzko and I made the difficult decision to leave the production.” The pair had signed on as executive producers and showrunners, but apparently “things did not go as we had hoped.“
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Avatar: The Last Airbender showrunner Albert Kim admitted that it was “absolutely” daunting to continue the series without creators Konietzko and Dimartino. “You’d have to be an...

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino spent two years developing a live-action adaptation of the animated classic for Netflix before they shocked fans by announcing their exit from the project due to creative differences. The decision left Albert Kim, best known as a writer on “Pantheon” and an executive producer on “Sleepy Hollow,” as the live-action series’ showrunner without the support of the franchise’s original visionaries. He recently told Entertainment Weekly that it was “absolutely” daunting to stick with the show without them.
“You’d have to be an idiot not to be intimidated a little bit,” Kim said. “My first reaction after ‘Hell yeah!’ was ‘Holy shit! Do I really want to do this? Is there a way to improve upon the original?’ Whenever you tackle something that’s already beloved by millions of fans, you have to ask yourself those questions.”

The TV calendar in 2024 has a chance to be something it hasn’t been in a long time … normal.
Pop culture, television included, has been operating under some unique circumstances for the past four or so years. With the Covid-19 pandemic shutting things down in 2020 and the dual WGA/SAG work stoppages largely doing the same in 2023, the TV schedule hasn’t had the opportunity to find its rhythm in quite a while. That should all change in 2024 – now, excuse us while we take a moment to recite 10 Hail Mary’s and knock on wood for 20 straight minutes.
The coming year of TV is looking far clearer than we’re used to seeing of late. There are some major new titles and returning hits lined up for the first four months of 2024 and then some intriguing “TBDs” after that. With that in mind, let’s go ahead and take stock...

Rebel Moon isn’t really the Zack Snyder Star Wars everyone was always characterizing it as… but what if it was?
“When Rebel Moon releases in theaters… it’ll mark the end of a 10-year journey. A journey that began with a 2013 rumor that director Zack Snyder was working on some kind of Star Wars movie. That rumor, it turns out, was not true. At the time, Snyder had the idea of taking one of his stories and putting it into the world of Star Wars, but it never got much further than that. You can’t help but wonder though, in the words of another Disney-owned franchise, ‘What if?’”

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for “May December.”]
There’s one word to describe the past few months in rising star Elizabeth Yu’s acting career: “wild.” Spend a little time with the “May December” breakout on the phone, and she’ll invoke the term for everything from the response to the Todd Haynes film to her rapid-fire casting process to her first day on set, which literally saw her smack in between two acting legends in a scene that’s a strong contender for sequence of the year. Wild.
And she’s not wrong. While “May December,” in which Yu plays Mary Atherton-Yoo, one of three children belonging to embattled couple Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianne Moore) and Joe Yoo (Charles Melton), is only Yu’s second film role (the first was in Ray Romano’s 2022 effort “Somewhere in Queens”), she more than holds her own in the lauded feature.

Netflix’s Geeked Week is in full swing, offering sneak peeks and more info on the streamer’s biggest genre properties. The new Avatar: The Last Airbender is easily one of the most anticipated titles, even if Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop recently made viewers leery of live-action adaptations. Netflix has earned a lot of goodwill from animation fans thanks to its rather successful live-action adaptation of "One Piece." Now, the streamer is hoping to cash in on that with its next big live-action remake of a hugely popular animated show: "Avatar: The Last Airbender."
Like the original, Netflix's "Last Airbender" is a fantasy epic set in a world where people can control one of the four elements, but only the Avatar can wield all of them. The show follows Aang (Gordon Cormier) as the titular Avatar, a 12-year-old who has to learn to master the elements in order to stop the evil Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) from conquering the world. "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the most beloved American animated shows ever. This is a show that voice actor Mark Hamill once considered "too smart" to be a success, yet it was not only successful enough to get three seasons, it also got a popular sequel series. "The Last Airbender" gave young audiences an anime-inspired show that told a serialized story while still having standout standalone episodes. It introduced kids to a vast and rich fantasy world with lore and history on the level of big franchises like "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings."
It also managed to end on its own terms, with a masterpiece of a series finale that paid off details planned from the very beginning, without giving fans a clean and overly explained ending. The sequel, "The Legend of Korra," doubled down on the complex themes of "The Last Airbender" and used complex...
