When you hear the name Seth MacFarlane, you’ll probably know that you’re in for some borderline humor that does hit the spot but not always in the way you’d expect. MacFarlane is funny, which cannot be denied, but his humor has been divisive from the very beginning. Whether it’s Ted, his Oscar hosting gig, or his most famous work, the adult animated series Family Guy, MacFarlane certainly knows how to draw attention to himself. The latter series has, despite all the praise directed at it, often been criticized for its humor and how it tends to take things too far, especially when sensitive social issues are concerned.
Now, this report isn’t about MacFarlane directly, but it is about another Family Guy character, the paraplegic macho police officer Joe Swanson, who is voiced by one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces and voices, Patrick Warburton. The...

"Superman: The Animated Series" occupies a curious middle ground in the DC Animated Universe, the continuity built by artists including Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. It never earned the rapturous critical reception of "Batman: The Animated Series," which to this day generates oral histories extolling its greatness. It also lacked the epic scope of "Justice League," which told multi-part stories featuring a huge cast of characters across time and space. But "Superman" should not be underestimated. At its best, the show's staff reinvented and condensed comics canon as elegantly as "Batman" did. Crossover episodes united Superman with Batman, Lobo and even Green Lantern, paving the way for the widescreen action of "Justice League." Best of all, "Superman: The Animated Series" introduced characters from Jack Kirby's Fourth World, including the nefarious Darkseid.
The DC Animated Universe ended in the early 2000s, but continues to influence contemporary animated series based on the characters to this day.

Zickel is playing Pa Archer, a gaunt but imposing figurehead that has a commanding energy balanced by an instinctive compassion. In the throes of a brutal Montana winter, Pa’s steadfastness and sense of purpose—along with the skills he learned as a soldier in the Civil War—are the foundation on which his family’s survival rests. As one of the longest running programs in Adult Swim history, it was devastating when "The Venture Bros." was canceled in September of 2020 after 17 years and seven seasons on the late-night line-up. What started off as a modern send-up of "Jonny Quest" quickly became one of the funniest animated series ever made. The cancelation was especially heartbreaking, as series creator Jackson Publick (aka Christopher McCulloch) had made it known that the team was currently writing the show's eighth season. Hammer expressed his disappointment of the show's ending with Comic Book Resources, saying:

A ton of shows have fallen victim to tightened budgets amid the infuriatingly still-ongoing, disastrously managed Covid-19 pandemic, but of all the canceled shows of 2020, the one that hurt us perhaps the most was “The Venture Bros.” The Adult Swim series, which had run for 7 seasons over 17 years, got the axe in September despite having been renewed for an 8th and final season back in 2018.
But in an exciting plot twist, it looks like the show may get that finale in some form or another after all on HBO Max, and apparently it’s due in part to the cult show’s extremely polite fans. And lest you think this is just a rumor, the happy news came straight from the mouth of HBO Max general manager himself, Andy Forssell.

There’s nothing new about comic book and superhero parodies. Many films within the current superhero cinema system like Deadpool even turn a self-aware eye to the source material, while shows like The Tick poke fun at the medium with exaggerated character types. A lot of the material that pokes fun at comics, however, does so for the simple joys of parody or to highlight the intrinsic silliness of superheroes. Adult Swim’s classic and now sadly-concluded animated series The Venture Bros. goes about things a bit differently.
The Venture Bros. didn’t begin as a direct analysis of the form and genre, but it gradually started to tell a story that used comic book tropes to show how dangerous and destructive superheroes can be and how they perpetuate a dysfunctional world. Anyone that’s watched Johnny Quest can probably take a look at Venture Bros. and assume that the story takes after the model without having to be told. What isn’t similar however is how the titular brothers tend to die so often only to be replaced by clones with no recollection of ever dying. It’s definitely been a show that has been meant to be on Adult Swim along with many other shows that share the macabre nature of those that attract so many interesting fans. It’s been 17 years since Adult Swim debuted The Venture Bros., an animated series that began as a send-up of the classic cartoon Jonny Quest but quickly became its own hilarious action adventure series with a deep mythology and roster of characters that would rival that of the biggest fictional universes. Seventeen years and seven seasons, it seems like we may have seen the last of Hank, Dean, and Doc Venture. Word broke on Twitter over the weekend that beloved cult animation series The Venture Bros. has been canceled.
There are very few details at this time, but The Venture Bros. co-creator Jackson Publick did offer a brief statement on Twitter confirming the news.
“Unfortunately, it’s true: #VentureBros has been canceled. We got the highly disappointing news a few months ago, while we were writing what would have been season 8. We thank you, our amazing fans, for 17 years of your kind (and patient) attention. And, as always, We Love You.”
The thought of there being no The Venture Bros. Season 8 is almost too much to bear, especially considering how the most recent two seasons were perhaps the best in the show’s history.

(Note: This post contains spoilers for the Sept. 16 episode of “The Venture Bros.”)
Adult Swim’s “The Venture Bros.” loves to slip in extended gags and references to beloved cartoons and movies — and sometimes they’re even the butt of their own jokes.
Viewers watching “The Unicorn in Captivity,” the seventh episode in Season 7 of “The Venture Bros.,” you likely heard a familiar voice in one of the new supervillain characters introduced: Presto Chango, a shapeshifting clown who can stretch his body into all kinds of shapes. Of course, if you’ve got an evil cartoon clown in your comedy about superheroes and villains, there’s really only one choice for casting.

Few shows have the depth of pop culture knowledge — and ruthless willingness to parody it — that “The Venture Bros.” does. This is especially true for comic books generally, and in particular the Marvel Comics universe.
“The Venture Bros.” is full of references, parodies and straight up jokes about the House of Ideas. There’s even a two-episode joke about the very first Marvel Comics issue from 1939. Here are nine of our favorite Marvel references from the seven seasons of “The Venture Bros.” so far.
Crusaders Action League — The Avengers, but Jerks
The Ventures wind up in New York in Season 6, and there they find the superhero game is a little higher-class than they’re used to. On their first day, they encounter the Crusaders Action League — a group of characters that’s essentially the Avengers with a splash of Justice League. It consists of Stars & Garters, a Captain America analogue...

It has been four years since we’ve seen the animated Suicide Squad wreck havoc in the DC Animated Universe in Batman: Assault on Arkham. This time the squad is back and badder than ever. At least that’s what it looks like. A new trailer for the all-new Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay shows us some familiar faces with some brand new additions new additions to the team. Check out the trailer below.
Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay rated R for strong bloody violence throughout, sexual content, brief graphic nudity, and some drug material, “Amanda Waller’s top secret “Task Force X” – Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Killer Frost, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn and Copperhead – [are] on a mission to retrieve a mystical object so powerful that they’re willing to risk their own lives to steal it. But the Suicide Squad isn’t the only group of villains seeking to possess the object.

The first trailer for Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay has arrived, and it looks promising. That used to be something you wouldn't have to say about DC Animated Features, but they've been spotty as of late in my personal opinion so all I can say here is the trailer looks pretty damn good. The lineup of heroes is better than the live-action film, Tara Strong is voicing Harley, and the violence doesn't appear to be limited as Quinn just smacked the head off that frozen guy! Let's just hope Vandal Savage is more interesting this time around than he was in Legends of Tomorrow. Christian Slater also stars in the film as Deadshot!

The Venture Bros. is an amazing show. One of the things that makes it a great show is that the show is pretty much made solely by two dudes, Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer (Christopher McCulloch and Eric A. Hammer, respectively). This is great, because it keeps things consistent and keeps a distinct personality running throughout the show. The issue is that episodes take Forever to produce. For instance, the last episode... I've got some good news and some bad news for all of you fans of The Venture Bros. The good news is the series will return to Adult Swim for a seventh season! The bad news is we won't see it until November 11th, 2018! Yikes!
The return of the series was announced on Adult Swim with a bump that was uploaded onto YouTube by a fan, which you can watch below. The bump aired on Friday and discouragingly points out that it's been 543 days since The Venture Bros. Season 6 ended and that we have to wait 422 days for Season 7 to premiere.
That means by the time Season 7 airs, two years, seven months, and 22 days will have passed without any new episodes of The Venture Bros. That's a long ass time to wait! Hopefully, the world hasn't ended in a nuclear holocaust by the time it's supposed to air!

The Tick, out now on Amazon Prime Video, is huge fun. Here's how the show achieves what its creator envisioned 21 years ago...
In 1994, I was about to be a freshman in high school. Despite being “too old” for cartoons, there wasn’t really anything else on television on Saturday mornings while I was waiting for wrestling to show up on my television screen. I remember most of the cartoons I saw only in the vaguest terms: the creepy face of Louie Anderson’s gargoyle animated child or a screaming purple cat. I know the name of both shows because I looked them up prior to writing this article, but I couldn’t tell you anything about them. However, one show I watched regularly in the mid to late 90s stuck with me well into adulthood, and that’s the 1994-96 animated version of The Tick.

I've always found it interesting when stories peek behind the curtain of the bad guys in popular movies, comics, or television shows. Usually it's satirical (like The Venture Brothers), but sometimes - like in a lot of Batman stories - we get a deep sense of the antagonists and what makes them tick (and sometimes the fact we being to sympathize with them makes them even scarier). Anyway, I find it cool that... Read More...

New York Comic Con has once again rushed by in a giant, fun, crazy blur, and although I didn’t get to nearly all the things I was hoping to, I did have a rockin’ time and see some really cool things I can share.
The first of these were a few great panels I landed seats for, including, as is my tradition, the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles panel. If you don’t know I love the current Tmnt, then what are you, new here? But seriously, I love it. And each panel I have gone to brings something new and different.
This panel (with Andrea Romano (voice director), Eric Bauza (Tiger Claw), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Shredder), Greg Cipes (Mikey), Rob Paulsen (Donnie), and Ciro Nieli (Executive Producer)) was particularly fun, because one of the things they did was a live read of episode #420, “The Super Shredder,” which...

Before Bojack Horseman came along to make us stare into the abyss of our own failures and laugh at them, there was The Venture Bros. Over the course six seasons, the Adult Swim show has morphed from a parody of old cartoons (notably Johnny Quest) to a complex treatise on failure and how the soft, strangling hands of childhood emotional baggage can hamstring even the most promising future. All while oscillating between biting social commentary, dry humor, and genuine moments of emotional connection between characters. Now that the sixth season has come to and end — and with Season 7 only a nebulous promise — it’s time to settle in for the long sleep between seasons. Luckily, at least the Blu-ray™ and DVD set of Season 6 arrives on October 4, 2016. HitFix got our hands on an exclusive clip above from the box set, featuring a short deleted scene featuring Dean Venture (Michael Sinterniklaas...

Some really cool news has come out of the Cartoon Network camp today. Variety announced that Cartoon Network's Adult Swim has some pretty awesome plans to ensure that their current, future, and past fan bases will all be entertained. One of the steps they are taking is to bring us new episodes of Samurai Jack. Earlier this year, Adult Swim announced the series revival would be coming, but this solidifies their plans, and there are a ton of other new announcements that Cn has revealed:

Now in its 15th year, the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival has offered thousands of filmmakers their chance to showcase the hard work they’ve placed on their passions. Whether it’s any first time writer or director, to the iconic, multi-award winning actor and producer, Tribeca has given these people a venue for their work, and it has blessed the film community in terms of releasing their film, as well as having audiences to watch it.
Kicking off our Tribeca coverage is Nerdland, a film written by Andrew Kevin Walker and starring Paul Rudd, Patton Oswalt, and Reid Scott. Directed by Chris Prynoski, whose previous works include other animated series such as Turbo Fast or Moonbeam City, the film stars Rudd and Oswalt as John and Elliot, two up and coming late-twenties year-olds who realize their passions of yesteryear are dead and they’ve done nothing with their lives. A wealth of comedic talent went into making Nerdland, the animated feature film from the creative team of director/producer Chris Prynoski and writer Andrew Kevin Walker.
Prynoski’s animation studio Titmouse, Inc. is the production company behind Adult Swim’s The Venture Brothers and Metalocalypse, so it’s no surprise he managed to collect comedians as talented and disparate as Patton Oswalt, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Ron Lynch, Mike Judge and Hannibal Buress to lend their voices to his first animated feature. So, it’s a shame – a painful, crying shame – then that such talent should be squandered on such a hapless piece of bad-humored social commentary.
Nerdland tells the painfully recognizable story of John (Rudd) and Elliot (Oswalt), two deluded slackers in Los Angeles whose dreams of stardom are continually cut short by their lack of discernible talent. They pretend to be dating Sally (Kate Micucci) and Linda...
