- The story arc of the series, where Elizabeth moves through seven episodes representing the seven squares a pawn must advance through to become a queen, bears a structural similarity to Lewis Carroll's "Alice Through the Looking Glass". There, Alice too starts off as a pawn on the second rank and takes seven moves to become a queen at the end of the book. Continuing this analogy, twins Matt and Mike could be seen as Tweedledum and Tweedledee, oddly dressed and hat wearing Benny as the Mad Hatter, somewhat befuddled but good-hearted Harry as the White Knight, wisdom dispensing Mr. Shaibel as the Caterpillar, elegant Townes as the Knave of Hearts, and disappearing and reappearing Jolene as the Cheshire Cat. Borgov of course is the Jabberwok who must be slain.
