Interested in independent Asian animation, but not sure where to start? Well, we could give you a list of anime, but we've already got (three parts!) to an anime tribute already. Instead, here's a list of 15 animated indies from the last few years that fall outside of mainstream animation studios like Disney, Pixar and Ghibli.
This list is in no way prescriptive nor comprehensive, and is merely organized by date of release. Some of these filmmakers are more established; others are just beginning their careers. Some of these are shorts, others are features, a few are even series. Regardless, with each of these animated indies, prepare to laugh, cry, and have your mind blown by the unbridled joy of animation.

This article contains spoilers for "Shōgun."
It already feels safe to say that FX's "Shōgun'' is the TV breakout of 2024. FX, noticing the comparisons of "Shōgun" to "Game of Thrones," has concluded they have a golden goose and picked up the limited series for two more seasons.
"Shōgun" is set in Japan during the year 1600. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) gains an ally in John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a shipwrecked European sailor. Blackthorne came to Japan to ensure the Portuguese didn't seize the island nation before his homeland England could get a trading foothold. When he arrives, he doesn't speak a word of his new companions' language.
One of the first Japanese words that Blackthorne learns is "Teki" — "Enemy." I remember as I watched the scene, I recognized the word myself. I don't speak Japanese, but I have picked up a few words from watching many different anime series.

We know that Warner Bros. is working on increasing its anime library, which is probably a move motivated by Netflix’s and Disney’s “attacks” on the anime market. And while Warner Bros. is slowly working towards its goal, we know that a major title is coming soon. Since Warner is the owner of the rights to DC’s series, they have decided to build on the success of the Batman-themed anime film, Batman Ninja, by creating an anime series based on DC’s characters. Suicide Squad Isekai will see the titular group of supervillains enter a “new world” to complete a mission and we have finally received a release window for the series, as well as a new character trailer.
The series was announced a while ago and will, according to Warner’s plans, be the first in a series of anime versions of DC’s stories. This won...

Created, written, and drawn by Makoto Yukimura, Vinland Saga is a historical epic and a work of true genius. While many series rely on high-stakes action to become massive names, Yukimura’s manga cements its status by making its readers appreciate the great storytelling and the emotional depth it features. At first glance, the manga will look like an action series, taking place in ancient Scandinavia of the Viking Age, showcasing how a young Thorfinn seeks revenge on a mercenary who killed his father.

With Snyder, there is no in-between; his vision is so specific that you will either like it completely and enjoy his movies or think it completely ridiculous and consider his movies a failure. There are many examples of that, including his to-date controversial adaptation of Watchmen, his Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the currently talked-about Rebel Moon series.
But, while the Rebel Moon series has been panned by critics as Snyder’s worst work, it seems that the filmmaker’s collaboration with Netflix is still strong, as it has recently been confirmed that Snyder’s other project with the streaming service will premiere this year!

Makoto Yukimura’s epic viking manga, Vinland Saga, celebrated its 19th anniversary on April 13, 2024. To mark the special occasion, the author shared a message on his Twitter handle.
In the tweet, Yukimura acknowledged his initial underestimation of the story’s length. Initially estimating a ten-year timeline for the series, the mangaka humorously pointed out his own poor planning as the narrative extended far beyond his initial projections.
“Today is the anniversary of Vinland Saga. 19 years ago, on April 13, I published the first chapter in Weekly Shonen Magazine. At the time I thought it would take me about ten years to finish it, but 19 years later, I still haven’t finished it! That speaks to poor planning on my part.“
Despite the delay, he revealed that that the series is nearing its end.
“But the final chapter is not far away. It will be over, even for a slow writer like me.

Ever since its debut on April 13, 2005, the Vinland Saga manga by Makoto Yukimura has consistently managed to remain among the top-tier manga series currently being published. The series is both a shōnen and a seinen work, as it effectively combines traditional elements from both groups. Yukimura has put a lot of effort into creating the manga, and while we’re dealing with a situation in which a Japanese man is writing about Vikings, we can only compliment him on the historical accuracy and the research he has put into crafting this amazing and highly popular world of his.
But, while the anime series boosted the popularity of the manga and made it known to a much wider audience, it seems – according to Yukimura himself – that the manga is going to end relatively soon. Don’t worry, we don’t have a date just yet, so it is going to be around for a while,...

Jujutsu Kaisen has reached the peak of popularity, and there are hardly any anime that come close to it. It is going through a crucial phase, with the King of Curses becoming more potent. Multiple Jujutsu sorcerers have come and gone, but none were strong enough to end Ryomen Sukuna’s terror. The fans are hoping to see Yuji Itadori get a power-up soon.
Jujutsu Kaisen has often made headlines with positive as well as negative reasons. While the positive reasons are mainly related to the anime and manga, the negative reasons are caused by the mangaka. But recently, several people have been lashing out at the anime after they swept away the awards at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

What's the most shocking moment in children's cinema? The death of Bambi's mother in Disney's 1942 classic titled, well, "Bambi," has to be up there. It's bloodless, but more impactful because of that; the movie doesn't revel in the death, it's just a matter of life.
The animals in "Bambi" are less humanized than in later Disney pictures. They're drawn and live as real beasts; even what little dialogue there is in "Bambi" feels like a creative compromise. The incomprehensible force named Man snatching away Bambi's mother is the reality for deer dogged by hunters. Notice too how Bambi's mother dies in the winter; it's not just to make the scene extra moody, but because winter is the season of death. The film then jumps ahead to spring and when it reintroduces Bambi, he's grown into a young stag; his childhood ended that snowy day. It's all the unforgiving circle of life.

Well, it's official — Netflix's live-action remake of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" paid off (for the company at least). Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier) will get to continue mastering the elements, now that "Avatar" has been renewed for seasons 2 and 3.
"Avatar" is just the latest anime that Netflix has brought to live-action. On this spectrum, "Avatar" falls below the well-received "One Piece" remake but ahead of the swiftly-canned live-action "Cowboy Bebop" (that even original series creator Shinichirō Watanabe couldn't finish).
Netflix hasn't stopped there. The streamer is letting "Stranger Things" creators the Duffer Brothers take a crack at "Death Note" and has had a live-action "Gundam" movie in development since 2021. Other studios are getting into anime properties as well: Lionsgate has recruited "Shang-Chi" director Destin Daniel Cretton to adapt "Naruto" into a live-action movie.

Ever since the Vinland Saga manga series dropped back in 2005, fans have been truly mesmerized by it to the core. Over the years, it became popular enough to even be adapted into an anime series of the same name which became a prized possession to the fans. Yet, despite such popularity, the anime hasn’t won any awards to date.

Even at this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards, fans were left disappointed as the saga won nothing. Anime fans worldwide were eagerly waiting for the Crunchyroll Anime Awards to roll out. The voting line was stopped on January 27, 2024. There were several big names, including Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, One Piece, Oshi no Ko, etc. After the award ceremony went live, fans saw Jujutsu Kaisen sweep away almost all the awards with eleven wins.
Every alternate category had Jujutsu Kaisen as its winner. Even though the awards are given based on a voting system, there were a few results that the fans were not expecting. Few expected Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village arc to win the Best Animation Award. Several other candidates were favorites to win. Demon Slayer came out to be a shocker for them.

The anime fans were eagerly waiting for the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards result. Anime like Jujutsju Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Oshi no Ko, etc., dominated the award ceremony with multiple award wins. Jujutsu Kaisen won the most, with eleven awards. Chainsaw Man season one had a few nominations, but it could not perform as the fans had hoped. Denji and Pochita’s friendship was not strong enough.
But there was a certain category that the fans had hoped for a different result. During the award ceremony, Jujutsu Kaisen won the Best Opening Sequence award. Even though fans voted it to be the best, many believe that it would have been given to Chainsaw Man. Chainsaw Man’s opening theme broke a record that even One Piece failed to achieve.

Chainsaw Man season one had mixed reviews, but the opening theme was liked by all.

To say that Suzume is one of the best anime movies to have ever been created wouldn’t be a lie considering the tremendous ratings the film has earned from almost all platforms. Encircling the life of a young teenager of the same name who sets out to save Japan through her ability to see supernatural forces, the 2022 masterpiece was a critically commended blockbuster.

The Crunchyroll Anime Awards is inevitably one of the most anticipated award shows by anime fans throughout the year. Because Jujutsu Kaisen has once again scored that award!

In a surprising turn of events at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024, the second season of Vinland Saga found itself overlooked in favor of Jujutsu Kaisen for the Anime of the Year title. The decision has sparked outcry and disappointment among fans, who feel that the epic Viking saga was unjustly snubbed despite being nominated in ten categories.
Fans took to social media platforms to express their frustration, with many labeling the outcome as “daylight robbery” and criticizing the credibility of the awards. Despite its critical acclaim and dedicated fanbase, Vinland Saga failed to secure a single award, leaving supporters questioning the legitimacy of the selection process.

Anime notoriously has grueling production schedules, and often not a healthy work environment, as depicted by Mappa Studios and Studio Wit. However, despite its punishing schedule, a great product is yielded, which usually mesmerizes fans. But, it must be noted that quality is never assured in the anime industry, where one episode might look stunning and design accurate, while the other might have the protagonist sport a deformed face and two left hands.
