Project Brazen, the Peabody-nominated global journalism studio founded by former Wall Street Journal reporters and bestselling authors Bradley Hope and Tom Wright, has launched a new podcast about the unsolved gas attack at the 2014 MidWest FurFest convention in Chicago.
The six-part “Fur & Loathing,” the first episode of which releases today, investigates what happened on the final night of the convention for furry fandom — a frequently misunderstood global internet subculture centred around anthropomorphic animal characters — when poisonous levels of chlorine gas swept through the corridors of the Hyatt Regency in Rosemont, Illinois. Nineteen people were hospitalized and hundreds were evacuated, many still wearing vividly-coloured animal costumes known as fursuits. Hazmat teams found the remains of a chlorine bomb on the ninth floor, a chemical similar to the ones used in WWI.
The FBI and local police department began a short-lived investigation in the months after the attack, tracking down attendees and initial suspects,...

An anticipated banner prestige animation title from Paris-based Silex Films, “In Waves” lead producer, the feature also marks the first animated co-production of both Anonymous Content and Charades, behind sales of Jeremy Clapin’s “I Lost My Body” and Mamoru Hosoda’s “Mirai,” both Oscar nominated titles.
In Waves is directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen, a former student of French animation schools Gobelins and La Poudrière who helmed episodes of the Silex-produced animated series “Brazen” and was Oscar-shortlisted for her short “My Home,” “In Waves” has just been announced as one of five titles at the Annecy Animation Showcase, part of Cannes’ Animation Day on May...

Exclusive: Alyssa Milano (Brazen), Virginia Madsen (Sideways), Gina Torres (9-1-1: Lone Star) and Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) have signed on for roles in the feature-length anthology Give Me an A, which links together 15 short films, in response to the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The film currently in post-production will have been completed within two months from the date of Roe’s overturning — which eliminated the longstanding constitutional right to abortion — in an effort to ensure this is a response and not a delayed reaction. The creators, cast and crew have made a significant effort to expedite the process in order to start a conversation with audiences about the importance of bodily autonomy and address the dysfunction of a democracy that is not protecting the needs of a majority of the population. Worldwide sales of French TV content set an all-time record last year despite severe challenges caused by the continued pandemic, according to the annual report on domestic programming exports by the National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image (Cnc) and film and TV promotional org Unifrance.
The Covid-19 crisis, the report notes, had many ramifications on international distribution of TV content that continued to be felt in 2021, including the absence and then gradual recovery of physical markets; an influx of projects in post-production; delays in the delivery of programs and difficulties in supplying new shows; and economic uncertainties among broadcasters.
Nevertheless, global sales, pre-sales and co-production investment in 2021 together reached €375.9 million (373 million), up 6 from a year earlier, according to the report, presented on Monday by Cécile Lacoue of the Cnc and Unifrance’s Sarah Hemar at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous TV market in Biarritz.

Current B-grade thrillers so frequently have too little plot — often not much more than a starting premise — that it’s almost refreshing to see something like “The Weekend Away,” which has many more narrative complications than it can pull off. Certainly not with sufficient credibility, suspense or atmosphere, and not in one hectic hour and a half. Nonetheless, this Netflix original plunging Leighton Meester into peril on a Croatian holiday is fast-moving enough to provide a decent night’s disposable home entertainment for viewers whose expectations aren’t geared any higher.
Director Kim Farrant’s last two features both involved suspicions cast on unstable adults over missing children. Whereas in “Weekend’s” missing person scenario, our protagonist is pretty much the sole character who doesn’t end up looking guilty of something or other. London-based American Beth (Meester) arrives in Split for a long-planned getaway with old pal Kate (Christina Wolfe...

Even as it celebrates its 27 Oscar nominations this week, Netflix unveiled its mega-slate of 86 titles for 2022. That’s far more than any traditional studio this year.
Thus we learned that a “sea beast” is about to devour a stowaway, 16 nuclear missiles are set to be launched, a female assassin will come out of hiding and even Marilyn Monroe will make a comeback — well, almost.
If you are intrigued by these one-liners, then stay tuned because, as Charlize Theron warns us, “Every night is Netflix movie night.” Translation: Netflix has lavished $17 billion to deliver the goods to its 222 million subscribers – and also raised their fees – so they’d better pay attention.
Over the years, the identity of Hollywood studios has been keyed to their slates: Warners’ noirish gangster films, MGM’s glitzy musicals, etc. If a slate touches all the bases, however, will that guarantee a home run?
In announcing details this week,...

Disney’s Encanto continued its remarkable run, landing at No. 1 on Nielsen’s weekly streaming chart with almost 1.5 billion total minutes of viewing.
That tally for the week of January 10 to 16, up about 6 million minutes from the previous week, easily outpaced No. 2 entry, Netflix’s Cobra Kai. The Karate Kid revamp still surpassed 1 billion minutes of viewing, but it relinquished first place after two weeks in the top spot.
In third place, with 823 million minutes of viewing, was Amazon Prime Video’s Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. About 36% of viewers were between the ages of 2 and 11 (compared with 38% for Encanto), with the audience 24% Hispanic and 16% African American, Nielsen said.
Like Encanto, the animated feature benefited from repeat viewing among younger viewers. Factoring in No. 4 title, Cocomelon, the top of the weekly chart has a distinctly family-oriented feel.
Another major Disney+ title, The Book Of Boba Fett, slipped off the top 10 with 467 million minutes of viewing. Episode length is a challenge for new series given the Netflix methodology, especially for shows released one episode at a time. The newest episode of the Star Wars spinoff show was its shortest yet, at 37 minutes.
Encanto‘s win is a rare one for a non-Netflix title since Nielsen began compiling the streaming rankings in mid-2020. It comes three weeks after the film arrived on Disney+ on December 24 after a month-long run exclusively in theaters. Along the way, the film has been nominated for multiple Oscars and scored the first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for a Disney animated song since “A Whole New World” from Aladdin in 1992.
In addition to the two animated standouts on the chart, another feature film cracked the top 10: Netflix’s Brazen, a thriller starring Alyssa Milano. It racked up 531 million minutes, good for the No. 10 spot.
Netflix also saw good results from the new season of Cheer, which helped the show finish No. 7, with 629 million minutes of viewing.
Nielsen measures only streaming via a TV screen (meaning mobile is not counted) for Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. It releases the numbers after about a month’s delay.
Here is the full top 10:
Encanto (Disney+) – film, 1.488 billion minutes of viewing
Cobra Kai (Netflix) – 40 episodes, 1.038B min.
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (Prime Video) – film, 823M min.
NCIS (Netflix) – 354 eps., 711M min.
Cocomelon (Netflix) – 15 eps., 707M min.
Criminal Minds (Netflix) – 320 eps., 687M min.

The Witcher (Netflix) – 16 eps., 624M min.
Stay Close (Netflix) – 8 eps., 558M min.

Upwards of 85 new films will launch (or have already arrived) on Netflix this year. A few movies made their grand debuts in January, and quite a few more are set to launch at the beginning of this month, but the streaming service is touting its 2022 slate with new movies every week and a robust lineup of actors and filmmakers.
Standout tiles include Shawn Levy’s time-traveling tale, “The Adam Project,” with a cast led by Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner and Zoe Saldaña, as well as a new adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion,” starring Dakota Johnson and Henry Golding. Regina King will embody trailblazing politician Shirley Chisholm in a biopic titled “Shirley.” Stop-motion and horror maestros Henry Selick and Jordan Peele are teaming up for the animated pic “Wendell & Wild.” “The Gray Man” stars both Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in a CIA/spy/global manhunt film alongside Ana de Armas.

Through the years, Sam Page has amassed an extensive acting resume. After making his on-screen debut in The WB’s Popular, he went on to snag roles in Desperate Housewives, Scandal, House of Cards, Mad Men and The Bold Type, plus several popular Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries rom-coms and holiday films. Most recently, he portrayed Ed on the Netflix original crime drama Brazen with Alyssa Milano; he’s also branched out to the newly launched rival Gac Family network, starring in Joy for Christmas.
Now Page is shifting gears on the real estate front, hoisting his Los Angeles home in the coastal area of Pacific Palisades onto the market for nearly $4 million. TV veteran Alyssa Milano leads Brazen, an adaptation of bestselling author Nora Roberts’ 1988 novel Brazen Virtue. She plays Grace Miller, a mystery writer looking into her sister’s murder. Thanks to the help of a hot detective (Sam Page) and her own keen investigative skills, Grace uncovers a truth that is way wilder than fiction. The Who’s the Boss? alum (right) clues us in on the gig. (Credit: Sergei Bachlakov/Netflix) Even as Grace is grieving, she’s able to focus on hunting a killer and enjoy a little romance. Alyssa Milano: Just like real life, you have your ups and downs. Finding purpose in grief is Grace’s superpower. What makes her effective at her job? So much of what drives Grace is her ability to think outside the box and think creatively. Did you get to speak with Nora Roberts herself? I did! I asked if there...

Halfway through the new Netflix original movie Brazen, a character says of his recently murdered ex-wife: “The list of suspects gets to be a long one when it comes to a dead hooker.”
This loathsome man gets punched in the face by Alyssa Milano for his disrespect, telegraphing that we’re dealing with a story that wants to be seen as nuanced in its sex-worker representation. The movie makes a few more limp attempts at being progressive, using language like “artists” and “clients” to refer to pornographers and their fans.

Fox has given a script commitment with penalty to White House Doctor, a one-hour drama based on Dr. Connie Mariano’s memoir, from Alyssa Milano and her Peace by Peace Productions, A+E Studios — where Milano is under a deal — Range Media Partners and Fox Entertainment.
There are no plans for Milano to star.
The White House Doctor is known as the “Shadow of the President.” Whether in the ER-like Medical Unit in the White House itself or traveling abroad, she‘s as close to the President as the Secret Service. As the President’s closest confidante, she’s burdened with the country’s most history-making secrets.
Inspired by the memoir of the first woman of color to serve as physician to three presidents, White House Doctor, written by William Harper, is a series about a smart but impulsive White House physician as she navigates the dangerous intersection of medicine and...

“The Witcher,” “Stay Close,” “Cobra Kai,” “Emily in Paris,” and “Manifest” all retained their dominion on Netflix’s English-language TV Top 10 list for the second full week of 2022, while the sixth season of makeover show “Queer Eye” fell through the cracks, leaving room for newcomers “Cheer” (Season 2) and “Archive 81” to join the ranks.
“Cheer” was No. 5 on the list with roughly 29.1 million hours viewed, and horror drama “Archive 81,” from showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine, landed in the seventh slot with 22.2 million hours viewed. The suspenseful series stars Dina Shihabi, Mamoudou Athie, Matt McGorry, Ariana Neal, Julia Chan, Evan Jonigkeit and Martin Donavan, and involves a deadly mystery involving a cult, arson and a disappeared director. “Stay Close,” the limited thriller series based on the Harlan Coben novel of the same name, climbed to the No. 1 spot with 53.72 million hours viewed.

I love me some Alyssa Milano! Loved her since “Who’s the Boss” and of course “Charmed!” And now, the actress is starring in “Brazen” based on Nora Roberts’ novel Brazen Virture. I spent some time with Milano to talk about her role, both as the lead actress and producer of the film. And she is as

It’s unclear why Netflix chose to grab and drop Brazen in its January line-up, but we can probably assume that any murder-mystery movie that gets wrapped up in a neat bow around the 90 minute mark will do just fine for any streaming service’s content-hungry subscribers right now as long as it looks vaguely entertaining. I’m one of them, and absolutely part of the problem, so even if I hadn’t stuck Brazen on purely to write this review, I would have definitely chosen to watch it of my own free will. But sweet baby Jesus and the orphans do I wish I hadn’t.
Based on Nora Roberts’ 1988 pulp novel Brazen Virtue, Netflix’s distinctly made for TV-flavored movie adaptation stars Alyssa Milano (Charmed) as murder-mystery writer Grace Miller, who naturally has a self-proclaimed knack for being able to get “inside the mind of a killer.” When...

More like “Fifty Shades of Beige,” “Brazen” applies an unconvincing dollop of kink into an equally by-the-numbers suburban mystery, providing a vehicle for producer-star Alyssa Milano as a crime novelist turned sleuth after her sister’s murder. This Netflix adaptation of a 1988 tome by prolific romance scribe Nora Roberts is slick but increasingly silly, its various elements so obvious and formulaic that they induce giggles more than chills by the climax. Still, whether viewers are looking for unintentional laughs or the streaming equivalent of a throwaway beach read, Monika Mitchell’s feature does offer some guilty-pleasure entertainment value.
Introduced reading from her latest “Brazen Virtue” (the actual Roberts novel this is based on) at a public event, Milano’s Grace Miller is a celebrity author with a big fanbase. Having frowned upon some of Kathleen’s (Emilie Ullerup) past life choices, she hasn’t actually seen her younger sibling in five years,...

Netflix is ringing in the new year in atypical fashion. Throughout 2021, the streaming giant’s original offerings swelled while its library titles shrunk. With its list of new releases for January 2022, however, Netflix is expanding its non-original market quite a bit.
Jan. 1 sees the arrival of a truly stunning amount of impressive non-Netflix movies and TV shows. The big titles available on the first of the month include: 300, Interview with the Vampire, Paranormal Activity, Superman Returns, Terminator 2, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and much more. Later on in the month, Netflix is also set to add Phantom Thread (Jan. 16) to its roster.

Though Netflix is lighter on original content in January 2022, there is still plenty of intriguing titles to check out.

What makes crime scenes such great spots for romance? For some reason, many a romantic thriller begins with a death that sends two determined sleuths on a careening crash course into each other's lives. This situation plays out in "Brazen," an upcoming crime thriller with a steamy, romantic premise. The story pairs a detective with a novelist, two people attempting to unearth the secrets behind a mysterious murder — and based on our glimpses at the promo material, their relationship...
