The Office spinoff is officially in the works at Peacock, and former stars John Krasinski and Steve Carell have shared their thoughts on the project and whether or not they’ll appear. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his new film, If, Krasinski said he hasn’t heard from his old boss and Office showrunner Greg Daniels, but he’d be open to making a cameo on the upcoming spinoff if he received the call. “As of now, I haven’t been asked,” Krasinski shared. “But the truth is I’d do anything for Greg Daniels. It sounds like they have a really fun idea.” The spinoff, from Daniels and Nathan for You co-creator Michael Koman, is set to revolve around a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters. As with The Office, which was set at the Dunder Mifflin paper company,...

It's officially official: We are returning to the "Office" universe. Yes, we say universe because NBC's beloved sitcom isn't being revived or rebooted. Rather, the powers that be have opted to craft a spin-off of sorts set in the same world as the American version of "The Office," albeit centered on a new cast of characters in a new location. Per a press release, the series is set to begin filming in July for an eventual release on the streaming service Peacock, and the first plot details have been revealed.
The currently untitled "Office" spin-off hails from Greg Daniels, who officially came on board to develop the project last year. He also adapted the original British "Office" series for American television. Daniels is working alongside "Nathan for You" co-creator Michael Koman. The show has been ordered to series at Peacock and is being described as "a new mockumentary series...

A new mockumentary series set in the world of “The Office” is not only being developed — but was just picked up by Peacock. “The Office” creator Greg Daniels and “Nathan for You” co-creator Michael Koman’s untitled project has been ordered to series, produced by Utv.
The untitled Daniels/Koman project will star Irish film star Domhnall Gleeson and “The White Lotus” Season 2 breakout Sabrina Impacciatore, as well as an ensemble cast that has yet to be announced. According to a press release from Peacock, the documentary crew behind “The Office” (who stepped out from behind the camera in controversial later seasons) is back to work looking for a new subject, “when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.” Like Dunder Mifflin’s struggle with selling paper in the digital age, the series’ synopsis suggests that it will tackle the...

After more than proving his directing mettle with Nathan For You and The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder entered another echelon with The Curse, helming seven episodes (including the mind-bending finale). Now, the comedian, actor, writer, and director has notched another step in his filmmaking ascendancy with the announcement of his feature directorial debut.
THR reports he’ll reteam with The Curse star and producer Emma Stone and her company Fruit Tree for Checkmate, which A24 has picked up. With Fielder on board to direct and Stone on as producer, the film is an adaptation from a forthcoming book by Ben Mezrich, whose works have been adapted into The Social Network and Dumb Money.

One of the most bizarre TV series to ever air since David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return,” and certainly one of the oddest shows of this decade, is Showtime’s “The Curse,” which could potentially have more in store.
Created by deadpan comedian Nathan Fielder and filmmaker Benny Safdie (“Uncut Gems”) and starring Fielder and Emma Stone (both of them also executive producers along with Safdie), “The Curse,” which premiered last fall on Showtime, is a satirical black comedy thriller.

Reps for Universal Television, which is producing the updated take from creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman (Nathan for You), declined to comment as the details surrounding the project remain closely guarded. While it may have been quite some time since fans of The Office were asking for a reboot of the series with the original cast, there were no updates that would indicate it was ever in the cards. But recently, fans of the show were treated to the news that series creator Greg Daniels has a brand new offering for the audience in the form of his new project.
A still from The Office
While this is wonderful news, some people were still a little upset that they wouldn’t get to see Steve Carell reprise his iconic role as Michael Scott in the new series.
Yet again, fans were treated to good news when Daniels revealed that while his new creation might be completely original, it will be set in the same universe as his previous show, which has got fans hopeful for some of the iconic characters to return on screen.

As “The Office” showrunner Greg Daniels looks to create a new series in the world of Dunder Mifflin, he’s tapped “Nathan for You” co-creator Michael Koman to help lead the project, sources tell Variety.
Daniels and Koman would serve as co-creators of the prospective series, which has not yet been greenlit to series and is still in development at Universal Television. It is not a reboot of “The Office” but is set in the same universe, meaning it would likely be set in a different office setting with all new characters.
Daniels opened a development room in January 2024 to begin working on the new iteration of the hit NBC mockumentary sitcom, which ran from 2005 to 2013 and was adapted from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s British series of the same name. The American “Office” took place in Scranton, Penn., and followed the staff of a paper company. It starred Steve Carell,...

Earlier this month, it was reported that The Office showrunner Greg Daniels was meeting with writers for a potential follow-up to the acclaimed comedy series, and the project seems to have taken another step forward. Deadline reports that Daniels has teamed up with Michael Koman, co-creator of Nathan For You, for this new Office series.
The new series would not be a reboot of The Office but take place in the same universe, just set in a new office with new characters. This would potentially allow for cameos or guest spots from cast members of the original series, but sources tell Deadline that a full-blown reunion isn’t in the cards. Daniels has said that the new series could follow a film crew doing a documentary about a different subject, which could mean just about anything.

Exclusive: As Greg Daniels continues to work with a group of writers on what could become an expansion of The Office universe, Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman has emerged as a leading creative voice. If Daniels’ new mockumentary exploratory project gets greenlighted to series, Koman will serve as the offshoot’s co-creator, Deadline has learned.
The potential Office follow-up, from Universal Television, remains in development.
As Deadline revealed exclusively in January, the prospective new series, which is not a reboot, would likely be set in a new office with new characters but live within the same world as the Steve Carell-led mockumentary series which follows employees at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Daniels has indicated that a new Office iteration could follow a crew doing a documentary about a different subject.

Fans of Nathan Fielder know how a little bit too good he is at making you feel uncomfortable. The comedic actor has an incredibly dry delivery with the bravery and commitment of someone like Sasha Baron Cohen, whom Fielder has actually worked with on Who is America? Fielder’s Comedy Central show, Nathan For You, brought his illustrious brand of cringe comedy to a grand audience, and HBO’s The Rehearsal took it to a new level. Recently, Fielder has partnered with Benny Safdie to try his hand at more scripted narrative comedy with the abstract Showtime series The Curse, which paired Fielder up with Emma Stone.
The response to The Curse has been naturally divisive. However, one vocal supporter of the show, whom people may not have seen coming is Christopher Nolan. According to Variety, the Academy Award-nominated director of Oppenheimer recently moderated a Q&a for the show...

Benny Safdie is late.
Frantic and a bit sweaty, he arrives at Westside Restaurant 40 minutes past our 10 a.m. breakfast, and just five minutes after I email his publicist, “Did Benny forget about the interview?”
Benny forgot about the interview.
Out of breath, he profusely apologizes, offering a Mad Lib of an explanation: “I was spray-painting a Tin Man costume in Central Park.”
Before that, Safdie spends three and a half hours answering my questions, legs cramping in a tight booth, metallic-smudged hands dancing around a heated corn muffin. “This place is awesome,” he says after a stack of plates shatters on the old tiled floor, as servers bark omelet orders across the narrow restaurant.
Safdie, 37, grew up bouncing between his divorced parents in Queens and the Upper West Side, and says he’s been coming to this particular spot since his teenage years, when it used to be open all night.

But just a few days prior, the creative duo received the Wavelength Award at the IndieWire Honors event at NeueHouse Hollywood on December 6, hosted by Dewayne Perkins.
At the event, they were in characteristic improvisatory, slightly off-kilter (and off-putting) style, with “The Rehearsal” creator Fielder starting off his acceptance speech, in deadpan droll, “It’s very nice. “Jury Duty” is a reality show. Or is it a sitcom? A documentary? An elaborate prank?
How about all of the above?
One of 2023’s defining breakouts, the Amazon Freevee series is the crown jewel of an ascendant hybrid genre sometimes referred to as docu-comedy. Even the people who made the show aren’t sure how to classify it. Director Jake Syzmanski and co-creator Lee Eisenberg say they’ve never heard that term. Eisenberg suggested hidden-camera comedy, but that’s not really accurate either, as everyone involved knew they were being filmed. Robyn Adams, a producer, used “outlined improv.” Whatever nomenclature best applies, this increasingly common format has enjoyed a banner year, with “Jury Duty,” Peacock’s “Paul T. Goldman,” BBC and Netflix’s “Cunk on Earth,” and HBO’s “How To with John Wilson” picking up where the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen and Nathan Fielder left off.

This article contains spoilers for The Curse episode 4.
A24 and Showtime series The Curse features an impressive roster of actors.
Leading the ensemble of this black comedy is Academy Award-winner Emma Stone, whose property developer Whitney Siegel is an “Eat. Pray. Love.” neon sign brought to life – a well-meaning upper class white woman barely repressing the exploitative impulses roiling underneath. Then there’s series co-creator Benny Safdie, who is fresh off a scene-stealing portrayal as hydrogen bomb creator and certified hater Edward Teller in Oppenheimer. His sleazy reality show producer Dougie Schecter is something to behold, swaggering around with ’90s Howard Stern locks, a fistful of garish rings, and a questionable blood-alcohol content.
The most beguiling member of The Curse cast, however, is co-creator, co-writer, and co-lead Nathan Fielder as Asher Siegel. Though a towering name in television comedy, the Canadian performer has not traditionally been known for his acting roles.

This post contains spoilers for the third episode of The Curse, “Questa Lane,” which is now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime.
Early in “Questa Lane,” Whitney and Asher have to suffer through the mortifying experience that is any Hollywood focus group, where the harsh opinions of a dozen random people can be treated as gospel by a network or studio. Whitney doesn’t come off terribly, though there’s a lot of skepticism about the concept of passive homes, including one person who’s an outright climate change denier. Asher,...

If it’s a marketing scheme, it’s an elaborate one.
“The Curse” stars Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder parodied the trailer introduction to the Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell rom-com “Anyone But You” in a newly released promo. In an almost exact parallel to that of Sweeney and Powell’s, the intro features Stone and Fielder standing against a pale blue background, with Fielder wearing a white button-down and Stone wearing a peach-colored tank top.
“Check out the trailer for my new show,” a beaming Stone says, to which Fielder counters, “My new show.”
“It’s actually my show,” Stone retorts.
Fielder scoffs, saying, “We’ll see whose show it is once people see it.”
Stone lets out an incredulous laugh before amending herself: “Check out the trailer for our new show, ‘The Curse.'”
“Better?” she asks Fielder, who states, deadpan, “Just play the trailer.”
“Oh my god,...

As “The Curse” prepared to air its second episode on Showtime and Paramount+, its co-creator and star Nathan Fielder participated in an irreverent marketing stunt that could have been ripped straight from a “Nathan for You” episode.
In a new promotional video that was shown before “The Curse” trailers on Instagram, Fielder and his co-star Emma Stone recreated a similar pre-trailer video that Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell previously released for their upcoming Sony rom-com “Anyone but You.” The original video shows Sweeney and Powell flirtatiously arguing about who the real star of the enemies-to-lovers film is, before reluctantly agreeing that it’s “our movie” and introducing the trailer. Fielder and Stone recreated the dialogue verbatim, but added a healthy dose of Fielder’s trademark awkwardness.

No one likes a bad review, but few people are so bothered by them that they recruit one of the biggest names in late night to “correct” one. That’s exactly what Nathan Fielder did Thursday night on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” while promoting his latest series, “The Curse.”
Kimmel started the interview as most late night hosts do by praising Fielder and his co-star Emma Stone’s work. The ABC host even want as far as to say that the show has been described as “unsettling and brilliant.” But Fielder, clad in an uncharacteristically over-the-top outfit, had no interest in that praise. After Kimmel complimented his show, Fielder noted that “some other words” had also been used to describe the Showtime series.
When pressed to explain what he meant, Fielder pointed to New York Times chief TV critic James Poniewozik’s review of the series, which called Fielder “a more limited,...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from the premiere of Showtime’s “The Curse” now streaming on Paramount+.
In the opening scene of Showtime’s “The Curse,” Asher and Whitney Siegel do a good deed. Well, sort of.
The cameras are rolling on the married couple’s new HGTV series, and they’ve offered a down-on-his-luck man a job at a new café. A producer is stepping in to apply fake tears on his mother, sick with cancer, whose genuine reaction to the news apparently isn’t sufficient for TV. Barrier Coffee, this man’s new employer, is little more than a set piece — a paid sponsor of the series with no long-term business plan.
Created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, “The Curse” follows philanthropic house flippers — “flipanthropists,” if you will — who descend into a New Mexico town to do good, or at least their idea of it. As...

On November 10, 2023, “The Curse” premiered on Paramount+ (and two days later on Showtime) starring Oscar winner Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder as a newlywed couple trying to conceive a child while co-starring on their problematic new HGTV show. The new comedy series was written by Fielder and Benny Safdie, who co-stars as the couple’s HGTV show producer.
With predominantly positive reviews, the series has amassed a score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics consensus reads, “A wickedly uncomfortable marriage of sensibilities between Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, with a masterful Emma Stone tying everything together, ‘The Curse’ will make viewers cackle and squirm in equal measure.”

The Curse is like a clash of the cringe titans. Nathan Fielder is known for uncomfortably awkward prank comedies like Nathan For You and The Rehearsal, and Benny Safdie, along with his brother Josh, is known for uncomfortably tense crime dramas like Uncut Gems and Good Time. So it makes sense that when Fielder and Safdie team up for Showtime’s new dramedy — premiering this Sunday at 10/9c and streaming this Friday on Paramount+; I’ve seen the first four episodes — the result is almost unbearably uncomfortable. A deeply unsettling fusion of Fielder and Safdie’s distinctive styles, The Curse...

At the onset, before enough time has passed for anything to go awry, Asher (Nathan Fielder) and Whitney Siegel (Emma Stone) play up one predominant truth of their home improvement project: There are no losers. Asher recites the assertion like a mantra, and really, who could blame him? The newly married couple moved to the struggling New Mexico community of Española not just to build a life for themselves, but to better the entire town. Whitney’s passive homes are eco-friendly; she designed them to carry a negligible environmental footprint, and she’s working to tear down old, abandoned houses that will be replaced with her new, dynamic homes. Asher handles the paperwork — buying and selling, construction contracts, etc. — and together, they’re shooting a pilot for HGTV that will spread the word about sustainable living to communities nationwide.

Plot: A genre-bending drama series that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their new HGTV show.
Review: As I write this review, I am still unsure how to process The Curse. I am a fan of everyone involved in this project, including A24 and their continuous streak of financing the strangest projects that no one else would produce. Based on the trailer, I expected The Curse to be a satire of reality DIY shows that have grown in popularity over the last twenty years. I also expected the series to blend Nathan Fielder’s signature deadpan, semi-documentary projects like Nathan For You and How To with John Wilson. Instead, The Curse is a surreal and bizarre show that defies categorization and combines elements of multiple genres, including psychological horror, to generate a narrative that defies categorization.

It’s not often prestigious organizations invite damnation, misfortune, or any kind of bad luck onto themselves — let alone their renowned festival and its thousands of guests — but for Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, exceptions will be made.
“The Curse” held its world premiere at the New York Film Festival Thursday night, with both co-creators in attendance for the first TV series to ever premiere at NYFF. Fielder, Safdie, and Emma Stone (who did not attend) executive produce and co-star in Showtime’s upcoming black comedy — about a trio of creatives behind an aspiring HGTV home-renovation series — which had audiences laughing and gasping throughout the three-hour screening.
Dennis Lim, the festival’s artistic director, did warn the crowd (as best he could) during his opening remarks.
“[‘The Curse’] is as brilliant, wild, perverse, hilarious, uncomfortable, and anxiety-inducing as you’d expect,” he said, alluding to Fielder and Safdie’s previous works.

Nathan Fielder is an off-beat comedian who graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools with really good grades. His former shows, Nathan For You and the recent The Rehearsal from HBO, are masterful at being uncomfortable and cringe-inducing by design as part of the humor. His combined powers with Uncut Gems director Benny Safdie bring us an abstract trailer for The Curse. The Curse is a rare scripted narrative series for Fielder, and it teams him up with the show’s star, Emma Stone. Stone is currently gaining praise in the festival circuit for her new bold Frankenstein-esque film, Poor Things.

If you want a trifecta of talent who all come under the banner of ‘weird, but in a great way’, look no further than the team behind A24’s upcoming Showtime series The Curse. It’s created by Nathan Fielder, of Nathan For You, and Benny Safdie, of the Safdie Brothers And on top of that, starring opposite Fielder is Emma Stone, of being Emma Stone fame, whose recent work with Yorgos Lanthimos has been… well, weird, but in a great way. Put them all together, in a show that looks to maximalise the discomfort felt in all of the aforementioned projects, and you get The Curse. It looks weird. But in a really great way. Rather than us try to explain it, watch the trailer here:
The gist seems to be that Fielder and Stone are a couple who have a pretty cushy life, and a seemingly benevolent home improvement show.

If you like you find humor and horror in the uncomfortable, then I have incredible news for you. Nathan Fielder, the ingenious comedian behind the small business improvement satire "Nathan for You" and the HBO meta-series "The Rehearsal," is teaming up with one of the directors of "Uncut Gems" to deliver the highly-anticipated Showtime series, "The Curse."
Emma Stone and Fielder star in the forthcoming show as Whitney and Asher, a couple that recently landed a home improvement show. Their HGTV-style series "Flipanthropy" is produced by Dougie, a stringy-haired mysterious figure played by Benny Safdie who is "holding onto secrets of his own," per Variety. The couple is simultaneously struggling to conceive — a struggle seemingly augmented by a looming curse.
So when exactly can you expect to see "The Curse" on your screens at home? And is there an opportunity to see it in person? Luckily, /Film found out...

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder have their sledgehammers ready, but they might not only be breaking down walls in their new Showtime and A24 comedy “The Curse.” The studios have released the first trailer for their genre-defying new series, set to premiere on Nov. 10 on Paramount+ and air Nov. 12 on Showtime.
Stone and Fielder play a married couple, Whitney and Asher, who flip houses on a new show called “Flipanthropy,” seemingly similar to real-life HGTV home renovation shows like “Fixer Upper.” Whitney and Asher’s “Flipanthropy” series is produced by a character named Dougie, played by co-creator Benny Safdie, who harbors some secrets.
Despite the couple’s big break and their hopes to have a child, all is not well for the house-flipping duo. Whitney and Asher, based in Española, N.M., are soon faced with a mysterious curse that will “disturb the relationship.”

Adam Bhala Lough and Sam Lipman-Stern’s new three-part HBO documentary Telemarketers occupies a space on the nonfiction continuum somewhere between the angry, journalistic interrogation of early Michael Moore and the more laid-back, observational curiosity of the Nathan Fielder/John Wilson school.
It’s a slightly precarious position. As a muckraking crusade, Telemarketers conveys and synthesizes less revelatory information than your typical Last Week Tonight With John Oliver main story — which is to say that anything you learn from the documentary you probably could have learned five years ago if you’d just wanted to know. As more personal storytelling, the series sometimes lacks introspection and sufficient autobiographical candor.
In the uneasy blending, though, Telemarketers finds something that’s frequently funny, unexpectedly poignant and occasionally rather special. It isn’t going to topple an industry, but its story of two unlikely friends who, after doing the wrong thing for a long time,...

When Nathan for You premiered on February 28, 2013, on Comedy Central, it was an instant hit. Reception for the docu-reality cringe comedy was highly rated across several popular review aggregation websites. Unsurprisingly, Nathan for You was critically acclaimed and often regarded as one of the best TV shows of the 2010s. The series’ selling point lies in its simple, yet absurdly funny premise. A business school graduate and consultant, Nathan Fielder, attempts to help struggling businesses become successful. While this is a common TV show theme, Fielder brings his social awkwardness and outlandish ideas. Nothing prepares viewers for Fielder’s...

Earlier this spring, TBS announced that it had ordered a new season of The Joe Schmo Show, the format in which a single ordinary person found themselves in the middle of what they thought was an unscripted series, only to eventually discover that everybody around them was actually a comedian attempting to bamboozle that one Joe Schmo.
On one hand, it was a somewhat unlikely resurrection for the quirky reality-comedy hybrid, which originally debuted on Spike TV — remember Spike TV? — back in 2003, aired a second season in 2004, went into hibernation until a third season in 2013, and then returned to sleep for another decade.

This July, John Wilson is going to teach us all how to say goodbye. The third and final season of “How to With John Wilson,” HBO’s critically acclaimed docu-comedy, will premiere on Friday, July 28 at 11 p.m. Et/Pt.
New episodes of the six-episode season will premiere on Fridays and will be available to watch both linearly on HBO and on Max. Topics for this season will include how to find a public restroom, how to work out and how to clean your ears.

Simply put, there is nothing on TV like “How to With John Wilson.” Wilson’s camera whips between everything from an energy drink millionaire’s lavish mansion party to a dog pooping on the sidewalk.

John Wilson’s hanging up his handheld camera. The creator and star of HBO’s acclaimed docu-comedy series “How To with John Wilson” is ending the show with its upcoming third season, set to premiere on July 28.
The 25-minute series, which originally premiered in October 2020, is shot and narrated by Wilson, and compiled from candid footage taken in New York City as well as interviews. Each episode is framed as an instructional guide on a different activity — for example, Season 3 episodes include installments focusing on finding a public restroom, working out, and cleaning your ears — and uses the seemingly mundane topic to approach larger philosophical issues. The show’s first two seasons received critical acclaim, and the Season 2 finale nabbed an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program.

After a decade-long friendship, comedy producers David Bernad and Todd Schulman finally put together their hidden-camera comedy expertise to make Amazon Freevee’s viral success “Jury Duty.”
The executive producers of the overnight hit mockumentary combined their talents for the improvised-scripted sitcom. Bernad and Schulman began with the idea to hone in on sitcom genre tropes and create a story about an isolated individual amongst a cast of actors as they served on a sequestered jury.
The two have had successful stints with unconventional comedy subgenres, most recently within the improvised-scripted sphere. Schulman worked with Sacha Baron Cohen on “Who Is America?” and Bernad teamed with Eric Andre on “Bad Trip.” Prior to “Jury Duty,” Schulman served as executive producer on “Borat,” “Bruno,” “The Lovebirds” and “The Dictator,” while Bernad executive produced “The White Lotus,” “Superstore,” “Uncharted” and “White House Plumbers.“

Jury Duty, the surprise hit on Amazon Freevee, is a very good and funny show. The premise is high-concept, the episodes tightly written and edited. The casting is impeccable, including that of James Marsden as a heightened, more narcissistic version of himself, providing a fitting venue for his staggering comedic talents. And some of the gags, including one with a botched animation of a court re-creation, made me laugh harder than I have ever laughed in my life.
