That They May Face the Rising Sun, about a small rural community in Ireland, has little obvious drama. The director explains how that is exactly what’s winning it awards
For most directors it would be an agonising predicament: how do you translate a novel with no discernible plot, in which nothing really happens, to the screen? John McGahern called his experimental masterpiece That They May Face the Rising Sun, about a small rural Irish community, an “anti-novel” for its rejection of conventional narrative.
“I thought that the act of taking drama out of it, if it was consciously done, could be dramatic in itself,” he told the Observer in 2005. “My whole idea was to take plot and everything else out of the novel and see what was left.”...

The Emerald Isle has rarely looked greener than it does in That They May Face The Rising Sun. A film built on the repeated turn of the seasons and the idea of leaving and returning, in its rural setting the hillsides glow with the verdancy of high rainfall even in summer, while the colour also provides an accent for everything from woodstain to the ribbon on a wedding cake.
Time moves slower in this late-Seventies world recalled by John McGahern - and adapted for the screen by writer/director Pat Collins and his co-writer Eamon Little - but it passes all the same. “You really are in no hurry,” someone tells Joe Ruttledge (Bary Ward). It’s true, writer Joe has, presumably, returned to Ireland from London some years before precisely because he and his artist wife Kate (Anna Bederke) have had their fill of the rat race. Collins, too,...

The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.
“God, I’m still so brutal at this,” the famously shy actor said on collecting the award, presented to him by “Killers of the Flower Moon” star and fellow recent awards circuit regular Lily Gladstone. “But being in this room is so special — being at home, with people that I love and admire amongst my fellow nominees and some of my favorite people.” Speaking backstage afterwards at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, he added: “It feels lovely being home with so many friends and colleagues.”

Prior to making headlines the next day after a short-lived health scare that required a brief stay in hospital, Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins arrived at Dublin’s Complex arts center last Wednesday to present the Dublin film festival’s highest honor to Steve McQueen. Introduced in 2007 and named the Volta Award, after the first commercial cinema set up in Dublin in 1909 by writer James Joyce, its previous recipients include Daniel Day Lewis, Claudia Cardinale and Al Pacino. The famously serious director was in high spirits, enthusing that “festivals are about passion, a passion for film.” “There’s always a buzz, isn’t there?” he continued. “[As you] go to the next picture, the next film, you tend to give people tips and say, ‘Oh, you’ve got to see this, you’ve got to see that…’”

The Irish government set out its 2024 budget this afternoon, which included a surprise shift to the country’s tax incentive structure.
Irish Film and TV productions are now able to claim the country’s 32% tax break on eligible expenditure up to €125m, raised from €70m.
