When Peabody holds its 84th awards ceremony on June 9, it will finally be in Los Angeles — after four years of trying. The org had decided in 2020 to move its annual event from New York to the West Coast. And then the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and the ceremony went virtual for three years. Last year, it was ready to try again — until the Hollywood strikes forced another in-person cancellation.
Now, Peabody and its executive director, Jeffrey Jones, are ready to give it another shot. “I don’t know what’s going to stop us now,” says Jones, trying not to jinx it. But speaking to Variety just weeks before the event, he was optimistic that this year’s Peabody Awards, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and hosted by Oscar- and Emmy-nominated comedian-actor-writer Kumail Nanjiani, would be worth the wait.

Everyone’s in the Emmy race, but Netflix and the Television Academy feel John Mulaney is better suited for a different category than intended — and that may only benefit his awards run.
Netflix’s live smash “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A,.” featuring the Emmy-winning stand-up comedian celebrating the quirks and unique personality of his beloved city, was massively popular on the platform. The streaming giant had planned to submit the show into the scripted variety category, where it would compete against the long-running “Saturday Night Live” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” However, Variety has learned exclusively that Netflix and the creative team felt the show was better suited for the talk series category and, as a result, will now compete against late-night hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon.

John Oliver was back on Last Week Tonight after taking a week off and dinged Fox News over their coverage of college students protesting the war in Gaza.
Oliver highlighted the coverage the student protests have been getting on cable news networks and highlighted a particular moment on Fox News as they reported from Columbia University.
In the clip, the Fox News reporter asks a student what they thought about the NYPD moving in on the protestors.
“It’s insane. We have a right to protest,” the student said. “Look at that, it’s f***ing crazy.”
Oliver zeroed in on the reporter asking the student what they were going to do when the police started arresting them.
“What am I going to do? I can’t really do much,” the student said.
The reporter then followed up, asking, “Are you going to go with the police if they make arrests?...

John Oliver had a good laugh at the Republican party once again on Sunday night, this time because of House Speaker Mike Johnson’s choice in location for this year’s GOP retreat. According to the HBO host, the place “looks like the Wes Anderson Remake of ‘The Shining.”
The retreat will be sparsely attended this year, with Axios reporting that less than 100 members will be in attendance. And, the reasons for their missing it simply tickled Oliver. One member was so blunt as to say “I’d rather sit down with Hannibal Lecter and eat my own liver.”
Another claimed that he had already bought the materials to clean his boat and simply needed to do it that weekend.
“We all know how important it is to use boat cleaner before it expires,” Oliver quipped.

One of HBO’s longest-running series ever will further extend its time on the premium cable channel.
HBO has picked up two more seasons of Real Time With Bill Maher, which will take the weekly talk show through its 24th season in 2026. The show’s current order was due to expire at the end of this year.

Real Time, which premiered in 2003, is second in HBO history only to the recently ended Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel in the number of seasons it has produced. Curb Your Enthusiasm’s premiere predates Real Time by three years,...

Best Picture favorite “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” were the drama and comedy editing winners at the 74th Ace Eddie Awards, March 3 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. “Oppenheimer” editor Jennifer Lame is now a step closer to winning the Oscar for deftly balancing Christopher Nolan’s interlocking, subjective POVs of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy) in color and adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white.
The other Oscar nominees are “The Holdovers” (edited by Ace president Kevin Tent), Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Anatomy of Fall,” and “Poor Things.”
“Spider-Man: Across the Universe” won the animation award, “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” earned theatrical documentary honors, and “Escaping Twin Flames” took the non-theatrical prize.

“Oppenheimer” continued to steamroll its path to Oscar glory on Sunday night, claiming the top prize at the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards.
Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Chuck Roven and their producing team took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, which recognizes excellence in producing for a theatrical feature film. The prize has become perhaps the most important precursor to nabbing the Academy Award for best picture.
Thomas told the crowd that many may not know that Nolan, the film’s writer and director, excelled most in his role as producer: “He’s absolutely brilliant, we’ve worked on 12 films now.”
Nolan himself noted that he and Thomas had never won the Zanuck award, despite previous nominations. “Every time we’ve been in this room, we’ve felt so much support,” he said.

Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” will notch another incredibly important precursor win on its path to the Oscars at the upcoming 35th Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday, Feb. 25. According to our official odds, the blockbuster film will take home the honor of Best Picture. The ceremony includes other film categories such as animated and documentary feature and television trophies for drama, comedy, limited series and more. Scroll down for our official PGA Awards odds in 10 categories with our winner predictions highlighted in gold.
A victory for “Oppenheimer” here would be significant because, more often than not, the winner at PGA goes on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Since 2000, the two prizes have gone hand-in-hand 16 times. The exceptions are film years 2001 (when PGA opted for “Moulin Rouge!” and the Oscars awarded “A Beautiful Mind”), 2004 (“The Aviator” / “Million Dollar Baby”), 2005 (“Brokeback Mountain” / “Crash”), 2006 (“Little Miss Sunshine” / “The Departed...

Warner Bros. Discovery is hoping that keeping clips from the show behind a paywall for longer will drive more customers to its streaming service Max.
Comedian John Oliver has become a weekly staple for many, especially those who can’t stand getting their news from cable news channels. His “Last Week Tonight” show provides a look at important news stories with a satirical twist, and until recently HBO has decided to make the main segment of each episode available to stream for free on YouTube every Monday, but Oliver took to social media this week to inform his viewers that they’d have to wait much longer to see free clips from his show.
Oliver informed viewers via X that henceforward, free clips of the show would arrive on YouTube on Thursdays instead of Mondays. The move is intended to drive more customers to Warner Bros. Discovery’s topline streaming...

Beginning with this past Sunday’s episode, its Season 11 premiere, HBO is no longer putting “Last Week Tonight” episodes next-day on YouTube.
“When ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’ premiered on HBO, the convenience of watching on Max did not exist so YouTube allowed flexible viewing for the main story as well as promotional exposure,” HBO said in a statement shared with IndieWire. “We are now delaying that availability and hope those fans choose to watch the entire show on Max.”
It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life, and John Oliver is feeling…annoyed. The “Daily Show” alum, who has made a side hustle out of blasting his employer on TV (especially when AT&T still owned WarnerMedia), hopes HBO reconsiders its new position.

HBO is no longer giving away free next-day looks to the popular “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” comedy talk show.
With the Season 11 premiere of the show on Feb. 18, HBO has ceased sharing the main feature and other segments from “Last Week Tonight” on the show’s YouTube channel the following day. The reason? The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network wants people to pay up for Max, which is priced starting at $9.99 per month for the ad-supported plan.
Oliver broke the news to his followers in a Feb. 19 post on X (aka Twitter). “I know I usually share a link to our main story here on Mondays, but HBO has decided they’re going to wait until Thursday to post them to YouTube from now on,” the host explained. “I hope they change their mind, but until then, you can see our piece about the Supreme Court on HBO,...

The 11th season of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver premiered on HBO Sunday night — but not on YouTube on Monday morning.
Per both HBO and Oliver, the premium cable outlet is now holding back segments from the show for a few days after episodes premiere. That’s a change from past practice, when people could watch the show’s main story on YouTube the morning after an episode aired.
Oliver sounded displeased with the change in a post on X on Monday afternoon: “I know I usually share a link to our main story here on Mondays, but HBO has decided they’re going to wait until Thursday to post them to YouTube from now on,” he wrote. “I hope they change their mind, but until then, you can see our piece about the Supreme Court on HBO, on Max, and on YouTube in a few days.”

You know what they say: Time flies when you’re trying to solve a supernatural-tinged murder mystery in perpetual darkness while simultaneously struggling with the unbearable weight of personal trauma. Or, something like that.
As unbelievable as it may seem, we’ve reached the end of the road with “True Detective: Night Country.” The show, which comes to a close Sunday at 9/8c, successfully revived the flagging HBO anthology by turning the concept on its head (and seemingly taking a few cues from fellow HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown”). In the finale, “Part 6,” a brutal winter storm forces Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Navarro (Kali Reis) to shelter at the Tsalal research station, where they begin to piece together what happened to Annie and to the scientists, all while facing down their own personal demons. The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. HBO is getting ready to unleash its latest miniseries in the form of "The Regime." The series has a lot going for it as it has an Oscar-winning actress at the center of the story, which hails from two of the minds behind one of the network's most beloved shows in recent memory, "Succession." But this is a very different sort of show not focused on the world of messy corporate politics, instead taking place inside a European palace and an authoritarian regime.

We're here to answer all of those questions and more, offering up everything you need to know about the show before it arrives. Let's get into it.

John Oliver, public-domain fan and self-appointed gadfly to powerful institutions, was back again poking a finger in the eye of the Mouse House in a new promo for his HBO show.
In a teaser for the Feb. 18 return of “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” for its 11th season, the host posed next to someone dressed in a suit resembling Steamboat Willie, the 1928 version of Mickey Mouse that entered the public domain on Jan. 1 after Disney’s copyright on the character expired.
“What are they gonna do, sue?” reads the poster for the show’s upcoming season premiere. Cheeky monkey!
It’s not clear whether Disney will again be a target for Oliver on this season of “Last Week Tonight” or if he’s just opportunistically seizing the Steamboat Willie moment because he’s now on more solid legal ground. (A rep for HBO said the show does not announce episode topics ahead of debut.
