It’s official, The Mother is one of Netflix’s most popular films of all time.
The Jennifer Lopez action thriller has continued to dominate the streamer since it debuted over Mother’s Day weekend. It tallied another 16.48M hours viewed for the week of May 29 to June 4, making it the most-watched film on the service for the fourth week in a row. With 229.30M total hours viewed, it is now No. 8 on the Most Popular English Film List, replacing Purple Hearts and bumping The Irishman off the list entirely.
The film still has time to make its way up the most popular list. Its 28-day premiere measurement window will end on June 11, and it is already inching fairly close to its next two opponents on the list — Extraction with 231.3M hours viewed and The Adam Project with 233.2M hours viewed.

Netflix has released its weekly chart of how movies and television series have been doing on the streamer, with the Jennifer Lopez action-thriller remaining in #1 over the Top 10 English film chart for the week of May 22, its third week in that position. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Before we get to the movies, it’s quite notable that Arnold Schwarzenegger made his debut on the streamer in a rare live action series called “Fubar,” created by Nick Santora (“Scorpion”), which debuted atop the English TV list with 88.9 million hours viewed, easily the most-viewed series of the week. It entered the Top 10 in 90 countries and was the #1 watched series in the United States, Canada and dozens of other countries across the globe.
It still received some stiff competition from the “All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” spin-off series, “Xo, Kitty,” its first season getting 63.8 million hours viewed last...

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Fubar” scored big this week as it debuted in the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s English TV List with 88.94 million hours viewed.
The action comedy series, which marked Schwarzenegger’s first TV series, has received more than 12 million views and appeared in the Top 10 in 90 countries this week. The first installment of “To All The Boys” spinoff “Xo, Kitty” followed closely behind “Fubar” in second place with 63.78 million hours viewed while “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” took the third spot on the English TV list with 42.9 million hours, boosting the “Bridgerton” spinoff series to 66 million overall views since its debut as it climbed to the Top 10 in 91 countries. “Bridgerton” Season 2 also made an appearance on this week’s list, though it dropped down to the No. 10 spot with 12.54 million hours watched.

In a week of mostly static VOD charts, something peculiar happened: “Spiral: From the Book of Saw,” the only major new premium VOD release, failed to dislodge “Wrath of Man” from its top overall position.
Both are genre thrillers, each released for $19.99 after their third weekend in theaters. “Spiral” is the more recent, has a 40 percent higher theatrical gross ($21.8 million to $15.6 million), and is part of a lucrative and long-running franchise. However, it’s “Wrath” that was #1 at three of the four lists below (#2 at Apple/iTunes), while “Spiral” lagged at #2 in the two charts that track by revenues and lower (#4 and #6) at Apple/iTunes and Google TV, both of which chart by number of rentals.
Why? “Wrath” had a much better Cinemascore, while the B- for “Spiral” was at the lower end for the franchise. “Wrath” has a proven action star in Statham at a time when a known star can create impulse buys.

Filmmaking rarely travels a straight path, but for “Monster” it was exceptionally twisty. After the legal drama starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. premiered at Sundance in 2018 in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, it’s seen a title change, its first distribution deal fall through, and the original title restored. Producers Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver say it was all worth it: The movie premiered on Netflix May 7 and was among the top 10 Netflix titles in the U.S. last week.
“It has been a long journey, but it has been a really good journey,” Lee said. “It didn’t go the way we thought it would, but ultimately we landed where we were supposed to land. People are seeing it, they’re feeling it, and they’re responding to it.”
“Monster” is based on the 1999 YA novel by Walter Dean Myers, which follows a high school honor student (Harrison) who...

“No Time to Die” was just the first domino to fall. When the 25th James Bond movie moved from its release in November and prompted Cineworld to announce the “temporary suspension” of over 600 locations in the U.S. and the U.K., it begged the question, just which films are still slated to open in theaters in 2020?
Honestly, not a ton, and the goalposts are moving so quickly that TheWrap just reported the sci-fi epic “Dune” from Warner Bros. would also no longer open on December 18 as planned.
Update 11/6: “Death on the Nile,” “Free Guy” and “The Comeback Trail” removed
We’ve already seen plenty of movies jump ship from 2020, with films like “Black Widow,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “West Side Story” and more pushing back by a few more months to summer 2021 or beyond. But we already played this game earlier this year, and already delayed movies like “Wonder Woman 1984...

This week has been one of the year’s strongest for new film releases. “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (Amazon) is the most talked-about movie in months. “On the Rocks” (AppleTV+ and A24) reunites the director and star of “Lost in Translation.” The director of “Cast Away” and the “Back to the Future” franchise adapted Roald Dahl’s “The Witches” (HBO Max). The creator of “Dear White People” returned to feature films with an $8 million Sundance acquisition, “Bad Hair” (Hulu). And Ben Wheatley dared to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s classic, “Rebecca” (Netflix).
Of course, none of those films were available in theaters. Instead, the only new wide release was graphic novel adaptation “The Empty Man,” a 20th Century title (released by Disney) produced in summer 2017. And while we don’t know the numbers for those home releases, “The Empty Man” placed fourth with $1.265 million, one of only four films that surpassed $1 million in gross.

AMC Entertainment will resume operations at a dozen theaters in New York State October 23 in accordance with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s recent, welcome reopening announcement over the weekend that, however, still excluded New York City and a handful of other counties.
NY is “vital to the theatrical exhibition industry,” the world’s largest chain said Monday.
With the reopening of New York, AMC will be operational in 44 of the 45 states where it has theaters. The New York locations opening are in Long Island – which is part of the New York City Dma – and upstate.
“The reopening of movie theatres around the country is essential to the theatrical industry and the entire entertainment ecosystem. It has become clear that movie studios are not willing to release blockbuster product until key major markets are open,” said AMC CEO Adam Aron. “Therefore, it is a monumental step in the right direction for our...

Post-“Tenet,” when major studios have all but abandoned theaters, it’s the indies that shine a little light. They have their pick of the screens and an ability to hold them not seen since… well, ever. (“Unhinged”: nine weeks and counting in the U.S.) It’s not enough to make up the difference of a Covid-impacted marketplace, but it’s enough for Open Road’s Liam Neeson vehicle “Honest Thief” to take no. 1 with $3.7 million
Overall grosses continued a slow uptick, with this weekend’s Top Ten total of $11.8 million the best since the second weekend of “Tenet” in the U.S. The full total looks to be around $14 million, again an improvement. (The same weekend in 2019 was $138 million.)
Regal, the second-largest chain, remains all but closed. New York state and Seattle are now open; New York City, Los Angeles County, and San Francisco remain closed. Those missing theaters impacted “Honest Thief,...

As the indies-only October box office rolls on, the Liam Neeson action film “Honest Thief” took the top spot on the charts with an estimated $3.7 million opening weekend from 2,425 theaters. Combine that with the film’s grosses from Canada last week, and the Open Road action film is taking in a $4.2 million domestic start.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ “Tenet” has crossed the $50 million domestic mark after eight weekends in theaters, taking $1.6 million this weekend to bring its total to $50.6 million in North America and $334 million worldwide. “Tenet” will hope for another small burst next weekend, as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that theaters in his state would finally be allowed to reopen with the exception of those in NYC.
While New York City is the largest box office market in the country, theaters in adjacent, out-of-state towns like Hoboken, New Jersey, reported stronger turnout from New Yorkers in the opening weekends of “Tenet”‘s run.

Liam Neeson’s thriller “Honest Thief” limped to first place at the domestic box office, debuting with $3.7 million. Those ticket sales, among the lowest ever to land at No. 1, came in slightly ahead of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and Robert De Niro’s family comedy “War With Grandpa.”
“Tenet,” now in its seventh week of release, grossed $1.6 million, bringing its U.S. haul to $50.6 million. The sci-fi epic, from Warner Bros., continues to fare better overseas. “Tenet” generated $5 million at the international box office for a global haul of $333.9 million.
Overall, it was another quiet weekend at the weekend box office as theaters that reopened have resorted to reduce hours of operation or closing down again entirely due to low attendance. Apprehension among moviegoers, coupled with the lack of new potential blockbusters are to blame for lackluster ticket sales.
Theater owners argue that it’s not fear keeping people from going to the movies,...

The sheer range of genres represented by this week’s new releases — from Liam Neeson thriller “Honest Thief” to romantic weepie “2 Hearts” — suggests that distributors of all kinds are doing their best to give audiences the kind of selection they enjoyed before the lockdown.
Well, nearly all kinds of distributors.
The major studios are still playing it safe and holding their tentpoles for a time when they can pack the megaplexes, although Paramount has stepped in with a fun post-apocalyptic adventure, “Love and Monsters,” which goes straight to PVOD, and Sony picked up an unconventional neo-noir called “The Kid Detective” out of the Toronto Film Festival that sneaks into theaters today. Pre-Halloween horror offerings continue, as Amazon Prime releases two more titles in its Welcome to the Blumhouse series: “Evil Eye” and “Nocturne.”
Art-houses land a major title in 2019 Venice Film Festival winner “Martin Eden,” an Italian adaptation of the Jack London novel.

Exclusive: Yes, there have been a number of film distributors — big ones — who’ve cut and run during the pandemic, jettisoning their movies onto PVOD or selling them outright to streamers as domestic exhibition hangs in a fractured state.
And despite how prevalent it has become, from Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls World Tour to Paramount’s $125M sale of Coming 2 America to Amazon, I’ve heard often and again from studio sources that neither PVOD nor streaming sales make up for the maximum revenues and profits that the theatrical windows downstream revenue model yields. This despite the fact that there have been ample discussions between studios and the big circuits about a dynamic shortened theatrical window/PVOD revenue share model following Universal and AMC’s deal.

Let me make something clear from the get-go. I love inspirational movies as much as anyone. Hell, during this time of obsessive doom-scrolling, feel-good cinematic experiences feel more necessary than ever. That’s why it’s so disappointing that 2 Hearts, based on a real-life tale and featuring not one but two wholesome love stories involving very attractive people, proves so cloying and manipulative. This is the sort of film for which the term “tearjerker” was invented, but this one jerks them so violently you may need medical attention afterwards.

If you wanted to sum up the dim state of theatrical moviegoing, at least for this week, you could do it in one sentence: “No Time to Die” and “West Side Story” have been bumped to 2021, and “2 Hearts” is opening on 1,500 screens. What is “2 Hearts”? It’s a softheaded piece of morbid romantic treacle — two parallel cloying love stories for the price of one. But it all builds to them merging together, and the film tips its hand within 10 minutes that its spiritual linchpin will be a cataclysmic medical trauma. It takes no great deduction to look at these couples, put two and two together, and realize that what we’re watching is going to turn into a faith-based organ-transplant movie.
The couples’ stories are like competing Hallmark cards, but if you had to pick the most grating, it would be the coyly idyllic look-how-in-love-we-are! college romance between...

When Universal and AMC in July unveiled a new deal enabling the studio to release movies on demand within weeks of their theatrical debut, rival theater owners publicly and privately decried the change. They feared the agreement would be detrimental to their businesses.
In the pandemic era, it may ironically end up being a saving grace.
Exhibitors initially were concerned that audiences wouldn’t pay to see a movie in theaters if they could wait just 17 days to watch it at home. Traditionally, films play on the big screen for 75 to 90 days before landing on digital rental platforms. Theater operators were particularly cantankerous because the pandemic had already been ruinous to the film industry, and they worried that shattering the theatrical window — the term for the amount of time a movie exclusively plays in theaters — could push struggling multiplexes over the edge.
That was before plans for a grand moviegoing revival failed to take off.

Despite the loss of more than 500 Regal Theaters, total grosses went up this weekend. Led by newcomer “The War with Grandpa,” the top 10 grossed about $9.7 million. That’s up from $8.5 million last weekend. With so many library titles adding to the pot, the full take might reach $13 million. By comparison. 2019 saw $141 million on Columbus Day weekend.
To be fair, with most of Regal gone and with New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle still closed, that might have reduced the potential gross by as much as half. Had Regal been open, the total would have been over $15 million. If all markets and theaters were open, the total might have been $26 million. The lack of product is a major factor, but this depressed level of business continues suggest that audiences have not restored their appetites for theaters.

After “Tenet” spent five weeks in the top spot, “The War with Grandpa” took no.

Jacob Elordi may be best known for his roles in The Kissing Booth and Euphoria, but in his upcoming movie 2 Hearts, out Oct. 16, Jacob is introducing fans to a new character. "And so it's kind of just his story and a little bit about his life and the connections that he made along the way." In the movie, Jacob plays the college student as he falls in love with a classmate, just before tragedy strikes. Movie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse has temporarily closed all six locations in Dallas and two venues in Omaha, citing the lack of new major movies to draw crowds.
“Due to a lack of upcoming major studio films, some of our franchise locations have opted to temporarily close until a consistent schedule of new releases resumes. We are working alongside all of our franchise operators to help them strategize and restructure as the Covid-19 era rolls on, and we continue to be optimistic about Alamo Drafthouse’s future,” a spokesperson for Alamo Drafthouse said in a statement. “There are no plans to close theaters across the brand and we continue to reopen new theaters, welcoming guests with a wide range of programming options and affordable private theater rentals.”
Alamo Drafthouse operates 41 theaters in 10 states. Within the last few days, new Alamo cinemas in Raleigh, N.C. have opened, as well as a third location in Austin.

AMC Theatres on Tuesday pledged not to close any of its movie theaters that have reopened, despite headwinds that the exhibition industry has faced during the pandemic and the lack of new Hollywood movies on the horizon.
The announcement was made the day after rival cinema chain Cineworld, which operates Regal in the U.S., reported plans to temporarily shutter all 536 locations on Thursday, citing the “challenging theatrical landscape.” Cinemark, another major theater operator, recently said it doesn’t intend to close any U.S. venues.
AMC, the biggest theater chain in the U.S. and Europe, said it’s able to stay open, in part because of the recent deal it struck with Universal Pictures. The historic pact allows Universal the option to put new movies on premium video-on-demand platforms after 17 days on the big screen. In return, AMC gets a cut of the digital profits. In the wake of Covid-19’s continued grip on the box office, Disney made another round of release-date changes Wednesday, the good news for exhibition being: Nothing is headed to Disney+. That includes Pixar’s Soul, which is currently sticking to its November 20 release against MGM’s James Bond movie No Time to Die.
While we already knew Marvel’s Black Widow was set to move, it’s by far the biggest shift on Disney’s theatrical calendar, going from November 6 to May, 7 2021. That’s a complete annual delay of Black Widow from its original pre-pandemic release date of May 1 this year. Black Widow‘s shift kicks Marvel’s Eternals from February 12, 2021 to November 5, 2021, and moves Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings from May 7, 2021 to July 9, 2021 (a post-Independence Day release date that Disney had already reserved for an untitled feature). Trickling up into Eternals’ February spot is 20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man,...

Exclusive: Good news, movie theaters.
Open Road Films’ Liam Neeson action-thriller Honest Thief, which was set to go wide, is going really wide now at 2,000 theaters. However, you’ll have to wait a week later than anticipated. The movie from Ozark co-creator and producer Mark Williams, which was set to open on Oct. 9 will now go on Oct. 16. This leaves 101 Studios’ War With Grandpa on Oct. 9 as the only wide release, and puts Honest Thief and Freestyle’s 2 Hearts as the prime wide entries for Oct. 16.
Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg said the move was made “in anticipation of additional theatres opening in the next few weeks and the opportunity to use the extra time to present Honest Thief to audiences in Premium Formats such as 4Dx and Dolby Atmos. We look forward to a terrific opening weekend and a long run in theatres in partnership with our good friends in exhibition.

Breaking: Don’t count on Sony Animation’s Lord & Miller movie Connected for this fall. The feature joins a number of other features fleeing the immediate fall calendar or delaying until later in the year, or even in 2021. Connected, last scheduled for Oct. 23, is now being moved by the studio to an unset future date this year.
Studios saw what Tenet‘s (and other films’) grosses were like without New York and Los Angeles, and both cities are required to be part of a tentpole’s marketing blitz; hence the meltdown of the immediate theatrical fall schedule. Connected joins Wonder Woman 1984 which was recently delayed from Oct. 2 to Christmas Day, STX’s Greenland, which moved to a Tbd 4Q date after stepping off of its Sept. 25 release, and Universal/MGM’s Candyman which jumped from Oct. 16 to next year Tbd as notable delayed releases. Word was leaking that more wide-release date changes were afoot in the wake of Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman 1984 postponing from October 2 to Christmas Day. Here’s one that went down Friday: Universal/MGM/Bron/Monkeypaw’s Candyman is moving from its October 16 date to an unset future date in 2021.
All studio partners are assessing a new date, and the latest release-date change comes about with no new news about when New York and Los Angeles cinemas might reopen. As such, some studios are looking at the theatrical landscape in the wake of Tenet‘s 11-day opening of $20.2 million and thinking: the time isn’t right yet to release certain big IP titles.
However, with theaters open, exhibition will need product, and the big movies are spaced apart. By the way, we hear that the Nia DaCosta-directed reboot will be going strictly into theaters,...

Universal Pictures, MGM and Monkeypaw Productions are moving Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman” from its original release date on Oct. 16 to an unset date in 2021, it was announced on Friday.
The studio and production partners are committed to a theatrical release for the film during a time when movie theaters have closed and film distribution has suffered due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The film was originally set for a June 12 release, and the distributors are now looking for optimal release dates in the upcoming year.
Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld and DaCosta wrote the screenplay for the sequel of the 1992 film. Ian Cooper, Rosenfeld and Peele produce.
Peele frames the story of the supernatural killer with a hook for a hand named Candyman as a demon that has haunted Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood for decades. But in the present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down,...

Jacob Elordi isn’t just another heartthrob. The 23-year-old actor has the grit to travel to dark places on the HBO TV series “Euphoria,” where he plays Nate, a high school jock with anger management issues. More recently, Elordi switched courses to reprise his role as Noah in the Netflix rom-com “The Kissing Booth 2,” a sequel to the hit 2018 movie (a third installment has already been shot). Up next he stars in the indie drama “2 Hearts” (in theaters on Oct. 16) and in “Deep Water,” a thriller with Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, scheduled for release later this year.
For Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood issue, Elordi talked over Zoom from his home in Brisbane, Australia, about preferring to play the bad guy.
“Euphoria” is set in high school. What shows about high school did you watch growing up?
I watched “High School Musical.” I was actually a big fan of that.

Update: Freestyle Releasing’s 2 Hearts is moving to Oct. 16, in hope that the Covid-19 cases will have quelled by then. The Lance Hool-directed romantic drama will now go wide against Universal/MGM’s Candyman on its new date, and Searchlight’s limited release of Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch.

Exclusive: The recent surge nationwide of coronavirus cases and California Governor Gavin Newsom‘s recent promise to lay down tougher restrictions in the state tomorrow has many in exhibition and distribution really concerned that there’s no hard date in immediate sight as to when the big circuits will reopen again.
I hear that after July 4, there will be another assessment by studios and the big circuits as to whether the current lineup of movies –Solstice Studios’ Unhinged, TriStar’s Broken Hearts Gallery, Warner Bros.’ Tenet and Disney’s Mulan– moves again as a block in another two week delay for each film as more Covid-19 data unveils itself. As such it would not come as a shocker if the current August release schedule slides into September.
At the same time, we’re hearing that New Line’s The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It is poised to depart its current Sept.
