- Jacques Cournot, a freelance skipper, is hired by Mr Hendrix in Santo Domingo, first of all to advise him regarding the acquisition of a sailing boat. After a thorough inspection of a prospective vessel, the "Dragoon", Cournot reports his positive appraisal to Mr Hendrix and initiates the negotiations with Mrs Osborne, the owner of the craft. Barely a couple of days later, Cournot finds himself in a bind as the police questions him about the exact kind of cruise he was supposed to organize for his principal. For the "Dragoon" is gone; Mr Hendrix has disappeared; Mrs Osborne is not aware of any deal; and the corpses of mysterious individuals, victims of a violent death, are found on the beaches of Santo Domingo.
- As in the novel of the same title from Camilo Jose Cela, "La Colmena" is a sad composition with the stories of many people in the Madrid of 1942, just the postwar of the spanish civil war. The main theme of the film is the contrast between the poets, surviving close to misery under the Franco's regime, and the winners of the war, the emerging class of the people that makes easy money with illegal business.

- Julita, a factory worker, finds out she is pregnant, which normally is happy news, but not in this case. She is the victim of premarital sex with Paco. Don Ramiro, Julita's father, is a security guard and considers himself a man of liberal ideas, but when his daughter confesses she is going to have an illegitimate child he turns out to be quite conservative and expels her from the house. To survive she ends up moving in with some friends and working with them at a nightclub where Paco and his friends are regulars. Julita and Paco keep running into each other as they have the same friends. Julita's best friend Paloma entreats her father to forgive her. He finally comes to see her and they reunite. She moves back home in her advanced state of pregnancy. But when her father finds out Paco is the man responsible for his daughter's state, he tries to shoot him to force him to marry his daughter. So Paco ends up helping her and being her birthing coach. They get back together and get married. Julita goes to the church dressed in white with her belly so pregnant, the priest has to shorten the ceremony to avoid her giving birth in the church. Right after the ceremony ends Julita goes into labor and she and Paco race off in a taxi.
- Paco (AKA as 'Cocosabio'), his girlfriend Cayetana and Venancio 'el Torralba' commit petty thefts and, from time to time, spend a few days in jail, which is why "they play the piano" (in slang, "the police have a file on them"). But one day they meet don Federico 'el Tizona', a petty thief like them, but with the pretense of a man of the world. So don Federico convinces the gang that, using European methods, their success is guaranteed. Paco then decides to act scientifically to get hold of the surgical material from a hospital.
