In a scene worthy of one of his animated works, Terry Gillam took to a stage covered in crashed paper planes at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Sunday to receive its honorary Cristal award and give a masterclass about his animated works.
Gilliam was last in Annecy, where its audience has a tradition of bombarding the stage with paper planes, in 1975 with Miracle of Flight. The anarchic comedy about mankind’s different attempts to fly debuted in the shorts competition but did not win a prize.
“Do you know how long it’s taken me to get this f**king award… They’ve finally let me in… I think they know I might not be around next year,” joked the director as he received the trophy.

Nearly a lifetime ago, in 1975, Terry Gilliam submitted his five-minute short film “Miracle of Flight” to the Annecy Animation Festival in France.
An absurdist gem about homo sapiens’ disastrous desire to take to the skies — using the same cut-out technique made famous by the irreverent interstitials and opening credits Gilliam designed for the British sketch comedy series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” — the film screened, but won no prizes.
Suddenly, half a century later (as “Miracle of Flight” might put it), Annecy corrected the oversight by awarding Gilliam an Honorary Cristal. Turns out, it’s a much nicer trophy — considerably bigger and far easier to dust — awarded in appreciation of lifetime achievement in the field.
“Can you believe how long it has taken me to get this fucking award?” Gilliam joked in mock outrage. “I think they know I might not be around next year.” But the director of “Time Bandits,...

When Jeff Bridges Made Startling Claim About His Iron Man Character In The Robert Downey Jr Led MCU Movie(Photo Credit – Instagram)
Robert Downey Jr, Jon Favreau, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jeff Bridges made the first Iron Man fun and entertaining, which helped Marvel lay the foundation stone of the MCU. It is now one of the highest-grossing studios. Rdj played the Playboy turned superhero role really well, but Jeff was a great villain to his Tony Stark. He played Obadiah Stane, aka Iron Monger, who died at the end of the film, but the actor once revealed that he was not supposed to die. Scroll below for the deets.

Julien’s Auctions, the Beverly Hills-based company that specializes in movie memorabilia, drew sharp criticism on Friday for listing a fragment for sale from the plane crash that killed actress Carole Lombard in 1942.
The item is offered as part of the “Danger, Disaster and Disco” lot, which runs from June 12-14 and is cosponsored by Turner Classic Movies. The starting bid is $250, with the piece of wreckage valued at between $1,000 and $2,000.
Film historian Olympia Kiriakou tweeted, “It’s quite despicable that @JuliensAuctions is selling a piece of mangled plane debris from the crash that killed Carole Lombard.”
Her tweet was shared by X user Frank Wells, who wrote, “I’m trying to figure what kind of ghoul would want this in their home, certainly not an actual Carole Lombard fan. And do what with it? Display? Trot it out at parties? ‘Hey, check this out….'”

Terry Gilliam is settling up his next project, and it sounds like a doozy. The Carnival at the End of Days will be a comedy in which God decides to wipe out humanity, and the only one who wants to save them is Satan, who will be played by none other than Johnny Depp.
Gilliam first pitched the idea last year, but he dropped a little more information about the project while speaking with Première at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival last month. In addition to Johnny Depp as Satan, The Carnival at the End of Days will also star Jeff Bridges as God alongside Adam Driver and Jason Momoa.
“[Jeff Bridges] will not be the God we are accustomed to,” Gilliam explained. “In the film, God is nature. But a nature that can speak to you. I’m going to need animation to bring him life, because in the scene with God,...

Terry Gilliam hasn’t shot a movie since 2018’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” a film that took him nearly 30 years to make. So let’s call the seven years between that movie and Gilliam’s upcoming “The Carnival At The End Of Days” a well-deserved break. The British filmmaker plans to shoot the new film this year, and Premiere reports it has quite the cast attached to it, led by none other than disgraced actor Johnny Depp.

Exclusive: Academy Award winner Jared Leto is set to produce and star in a new film from h.wood Media, the multi-strategy vertical of L.A.-based hospitality company The h.wood Group, that draws inspiration from the story of retired professor-turned-cat burglar suspect Dr. Lawrence Gray.
Currently untitled, the film written by Andy Bellin (Lovelace) adapts the article “The Talented Dr. Gray” by Steve Kroft and Howard L. Rosenberg, which was first published on Graydon Carter’s Airmail in 2022.
Gray, a retired political science professor from John Cabot University, is charged with orchestrating a sophisticated theft operation involving high-value jewels and art pieces. Known for his impeccable manners and elite social connections, Gray allegedly stole over $1 million worth of valuables from homes in five states. His victims included acquaintances he met through social events, such as weddings and fundraisers, and notably, his longtime lover, Jacqueline Quillen, a prominent figure in Washington D.

The team behind Apple TV+’s big-budget European drama Constellation took to the stage in Cologne this week to talk developing the psychological sci-fi drama, technical challenges of shooting zero gravity, almost casting Jeff Bridges and why they spent nearly $550,000 on space suits. You can watch a video of the session at the bottom.
During a production masterclass session at Seriencamp, series producer Daniel Hetzer and line producer Jakob Neuhausser from Constellation co-producer Turbine Studios revealed the budget for the series sat around €100M ($110M), with Apple providing around 70% and a €10M grant coming from the state-run German Motion Picture Fund.
Turbine, which has bases in the UK and Germany, had initially joined forces with France’s Haut et Court TV to create the project. Together they attached writer and show creator Peter Harness and then sold a global license to the project to Apple, before attracting around €30M in soft money from Germany,...

The film world is buzzing with both excitement and skepticism about Tinseltown’s beloved Johnny Depp’s forthcoming film, The Carnival at the End of Days. Fresh off the stir of his highly publicized court proceedings, the actor, 60, is set to embody a character as enigmatic as Satan in the Terry Gilliam-helmed flick.
So, The Carnival at the End of Days, which will also feature God, Adam, and Eve, is billed as an apocalyptic comedy by The Fisher King director. Also, note that this will be Depp’s re-entry into big-budget cinema after he settled his widely reported defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, two years ago.

Though there are mixed feelings among viewers regarding expectations and disdain for Depp’s flick, its ensemble cast—which includes notable actors like Jeff Bridges, Adam Driver, and Jason Momoa—may redefine the comedy genre.

The term wizard can be thrown around a lot. Wizards make magic, can create life from the ether, and conjure things that are beautiful and sometimes monstrous. There aren’t many wizards out in the world these days, but I know of one by name and that name is Rick Baker. Baker is a master of the monsters and a wizard of special effects. He’s an artist and a visionary who made some of the most memorable creatures and effects to grace movie and TV screens of the last few decades. He’s also an unabashed Monster Kid who has never lost his love and fascination for the classics. On todays episode of What Happened To This Horror Celebrity we’re meeting a wizard of the wicked and magician of monsters as we reveal what happened to Rick Baker.
Rick Baker was born in 1950 to Doris and Ralph Baker in New York.

Terry Gilliam adds Johnny Depp and Jeff Bridges to the cast of The Carnival At The End Of Days. More on the story here.
It’s been 2018 since Terry Gilliam (finally) released his long-cherished film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, after a prolonged – and then some – time trying to get the thing off the ground. The story of that particular production has been well told, not least in part by the superb documentary Lost In La Mancha, and since then, Gilliam has directed a stage production of Into The Woods, and has been noodling his next film.
It’s increasingly looking like that film will be The Carnival At The End Of Days, which he’s been talking about for several months now. It’s a story that sees Satan off in search of new humans to put before God as a new Adam and Eve. Gilliam’s not been shy of upsetting people,...

Johnny Depp, Jeff Bridges, Adam Driver, and Jason Momoa are set to star in a new movie directed by Terry Gilliam, titled The Carnival at the End of Days.
The news was confirmed by Gilliam himself in a recent interview with the French publication Premiere, in which he explained the premise of the film. “God decides to destroy humanity, and the only one trying to save us is Satan because he needs people in hell, otherwise he won’t have a job for eternity,” he said. Depp and Bridges are set to play Satan and God, respectively.
“It will be very funny for those who like to be offended,” Gilliam said. Elsewhere, he expanded on what he has in mind for Bridge’s God character. “He will not be the God we are used to,” he said. “In the film, God is nature, but a nature that can talk to you.

You probably know that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) was the big bad of 2012's "The Avengers" and his role there is why he's still the defining villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not even Thanos can say he got his own TV series like Loki did! It's not just the God of Mischief being in the right place at the right time, though.
"Avengers" writer/director Joss Whedon overhauled Loki, turning the meek sad boy from 2011's "Thor" into a wickedly charismatic megalomaniac. Hiddleston took that change and ran with it, proving he can wield an evil grin as effectively as he can puppy dog eyes along the way. Every subsequent Loki appearance has been trying to meld the two characterizations; Loki's an evil bastard, but he does love his mum and big brother Thor (even if he loves himself a bit more).
Loki (really Hiddleston) holds the screen all on his own in "The Avengers.

George Clooney as a fixer? "Wolfs" is not, in fact, the sequel to the former Batman's excellent 2007 legal thriller "Michael Clayton." It does, however, reunite Clooney with his "Ocean's" trilogy costar Brad Pitt for the kind of original adult genre film that's in short supply these days. And no, before you ask, that's not a spelling mistake. We're talking about "Wolfs," not the 2014 werewolf flick "Wolves" ... or the 2016 sports drama "Wolves" ... or even 2022's murder mystery "Wolves." Man, who knew "Wolves" was such a versatile title?
"Wolfs" sees Clooney and Pitt playing a pair of fixers who're assigned to the same job in what will surely be a cage-match to rival that of "Godzilla vs. Kong" or Alien vs. Predator." Or maybe not; the trailer teaser and unofficial set photos released ahead of today's trailer premiere have much more of a "Locke" vibe, with Clooney and Pitt sitting in stony...

At the end of the 2018 superhero blockbuster "Avengers: Infinity War," a concerned environmentalist named Thanos (Josh Brolin) amasses six magical gems that, when assembled, granted the possessor omnipotence. Thanos, perhaps uncreatively, only wishes that half of the universe be instantly wiped out, believing that a halving of the population would be a dandy way to preserve natural resources. Thanos snaps his fingers and kills half of the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They melt into flakes of ash.

Fred Roos, the casting director turned producer who jump-started the career of Jack Nicholson and collaborated often with Francis Ford Coppola, sharing a best picture Oscar with the filmmaker for The Godfather Part II, has died. He was 89.
Roos died Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills, a publicist announced.
It’s part of Hollywood lore that before Harrison Ford became a famous actor, he was laboring as a carpenter to make ends meet. What some might not know is that it was at Roos’ house where Ford was woodworking when the casting director befriended him, eventually pushing him for roles in George Lucas’ American Graffiti (1973) and Star Wars (1977) and Coppola’s The Conversation (1974).
And it was Roos who convinced Lucas — who had been leaning toward Amy Irving — that Carrie Fisher should portray Princess Leia in Star Wars. (Roos did not have an official role on that film.)

“Chances are you’ve never heard of Preston Thomas Tucker; dreamer, inventor, visionary — a man ahead of his time.”
Chances are you’ve never heard of the movie made about him either. Like the car he had created in his name, it came and went in nearly the same breath. And yet, also like the car, the film’s legacy and staying power lies in the strength of its parts, as well as the personal passion put into it by its maker, Francis Ford Coppola. In fact, it’s hard not to watch his 1988 film “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” and discern a link between Coppola and the film’s eponymous character. Played by a still boyish Jeff Bridges with a glint in his eye and a manic energy that veers between zealous enthusiasm and fevered paranoia, Tucker is a man entwined with his dreams. Charles Portis' novel "True Grit" has been brought to life on the big screen several times, but Henry Hathaway's 1969 John Wayne-starring adaptation is perhaps the most popular. Wayne's rendition of Rooster Cogburn is one of his most-recognized late-period roles, and it also earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor — an accolade that feels thoroughly deserving due to the actor's ability to seamlessly inhabit the plucky, one-eyed U.S. Marshal. Portis' "True Grit" is told from the perspective of the adolescent Mattie Ross, whose deadpan, no-nonsense demeanor is our portal to the treacherous grown-ups around her, and her bond with the tough-as-nails marshal soon emerges as the heart of the drama. Wayne expertly balances Rooster's more vicious sensibilities with the hidden vulnerabilities that emerge when he helps Mattie exact revenge and looks endlessly cool while charging toward armed dudes with dual guns on horseback.

My favorite scene in the hilarious new film “The Fall Guy” is the one where Emily Blunt (recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for “Oppenheimer”) belts out the Phil Collins classic “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” as Ryan Gosling (recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for “Barbie”) finds himself in a particularly dramatic — and dangerous — sequence of events.
As Blunt sang with all her heart, I couldn’t help but think of how perfect the timing was.
Forty years ago this very month, the famous power ballad had just completed a three-week reign on top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Against All Odds” was the title song from the romantic thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods. The Taylor Hackford-directed movie was met with solid reviews and healthy ticket sales. But its most notable success was Collins’s song, which quickly took the Billboard chart by storm.

Taylor Sheridan is now a big-name filmmaker creating some of the most acclaimed projects for Paramount. The multi-talented writer/director is responsible for the creation of the network’s most successful show Yellowstone. He has also created various spinoffs and other intriguing shows that have become hits for the streamer.
In addition to being the writer of Hell or High Water, Taylor Sheridan played an anonymous cowboy in the film
Before Yellowstone, Sheridan was relatively unknown in the industry and was trying to make a name in the industry. His first script Sicario directed by Denis Villeneuve turned out to be a hit and he had another script for another crime drama Hell or High Water. The Texas-based story had to be rooted in the state’s history and the problems plaguing people, with one city’s environment becoming the film’s inspiration.

Dave Bautista and Jeff Bridges lead a stacked cast which will flip the Beowulf story and presumably also feature a puppet or two in the mix.
Here’s a fine story to kick off the week. The legendary Jim Henson Company is set to make Grendel, a live action version of Beowulf, the epic tale of heroes, monsters and the clashes between them.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Palisades Park Pictures is launching sales for the project at the upcoming Cannes marketplace. We’ve seen the tale of Beowulf rendered on the silver screen before of course, with Robert Zemeckis' 2007 version re-telling the Old English epic poem through the medium of computer animation.
Although that film is sometimes floated as an example in debates about the merits or shortcomings of CGI experimentation, it boasted an impressive cast that included Ray Winstone, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright and Crispin Glover...

The story of Beowulf and Grendel is one of the most famous stories in English literature. The epic Beowulf is one of the most important works of English literature in general and it has been an inspiration for many authors over the centuries. We have also had numerous adaptations of the work, including the animated film from 2007, but all of them focused on the heroic tale of Beowulf, the hero of the story. But, the story also has another important character – Grendel – the monster and Beowulf’s rival in the story.
Grendel is finally going to get the chance to tell you his side of the story, as the movie Grendel will be released soon, with Palisades Park Pictures is launching international sales ahead of Cannes.

A new live-action take on the tale of Beowulf is in development, and the project has assembled a very impressive cast.

The cast also includes Bryan Cranston as King Hrothgar, Sam Elliott as The Dragon, Thomasin McKenzie as Queen Wealhtheow and Aidan Turner as Unferth. T Bone Burnett will also appear, and provide original songs for the film.

Plot: A spacey pool cleaner (Chris Pine) discovers a plot to steal water from Los Angeles during a drought.
Review: (Note – Poolman Was Reviewed At TIFF 2023) In the fourteen years I’ve been covering TIFF, I’ve seen only a handful of movies that I’d say were shockingly bad. The Mickey Rourke/ Megan Fox/ Bill Murray dud Passion Play comes to mind. Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. That it was made at all is a testament to the power of celebrity, as it has already become notorious at the festival for the amount of walkouts taking place at the screenings.

“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

Exclusive: Here’s some buzzy casting. Greta Lee (Past Lives) and Kingsley Ben-Adir (Bob Marley: One Love) are in negotiations to star in director and producer Louis Leterrier’s (Now You See Me) upcoming sci-fi horror film 11817.
Both actors are on a roll. The former is coming off a string of hits including Oscar nominee Past Lives, Apple TV drama The Morning Show and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, while Ben-Adir’s last two movies couldn’t have gone much better in the shape of box office hits Bob Marley: One Love and Barbie.
In 11817, inexplicable forces trap a family of four inside their house indefinitely. As both modern luxuries and life or death essentials begin to run out, the family must learn how to be resourceful to survive and outsmart who – or what – is keeping them trapped.
Additional casting is underway on the project, which is based on a script by Matthew Robinson.

Smart delivers Vance’s response perfectly. A couple of seconds later, I’m directed to a faux red carpet built to look like the Time100 Gala,...

The 49th Chaplin Award Gala saw dozens of stars take to the red carpet to honor Jeff Bridges. The annual fundraiser benefits the Lincoln Center’s nonprofit sector, which supports student programs, film festivals, and movie series. Bridges received the iconic Chaplin Award as his former co-stars Chris Pine, Cynthia Erivo, Sharon Stone, Chris Pine, and Rosie Perez applauded him. Many supporters couldn’t help but notice the latter actor. Perez turns 60 this year and still looks amazing.

Chris Pine, Cynthia Erivo, Kieran Culkin, Sharon Stone and Rosie Perez celebrated Jeff Bridges’ seven-decade career at the 49th annual Chaplin Awards Gala in New York City on Monday night. But the Big Lebowski star almost chose a different career path.
During his acceptance speech for the Film at Lincoln Center‘s prestigious honor, the True Grit star shared that he originally “resisted” the idea of pursuing acting full-time for a few different reasons.
“It made me nervous, anxious, and I had other things I wanted to do,” he told the full auditorium at Alice Tully Hall. “I was very much into music. I loved ceramics, painting, and who wants to do what their parents do anyway?”
He recalled his father, actor Lloyd Bridges, explaining to him that he could do all of those things in this career path and use them all to some degree, which was one of the beauties of the job.

Rosie Perez is crediting former co-star Jeff Bridges for her casting in “Fearless” (1993). Perez says the studio “had a problem” with their on-screen “interracial relationship,” but that Bridges went “to bat” for her.
“Fearless” was distributed by Warner Bros. It centered on Bridges’ character Max Klein surviving a plane crash and connecting with his fellow survivor (Perez). Isabella Rossellini and John Turturro co-starred.
“Early in my career, I had auditioned for ‘Fearless,’ directed by Peter Weir. Although I knew I nailed it, they could see I was really, really, extremely nervous, so I wasn’t really sure,” Perez said during the 2024 Chaplin Award Tribute gala honoring Bridges. “I was extremely surprised to get a callback – surprised because I also knew the studio didn’t want me for the role. Then they said for round two that they wanted me to meet with Jeff Bridges. Holy shit! That’s Jeff Bridges!

Jeff Bridges isn’t like other leading men. So goes the tale for over 50 years and 70 films. Where other actors of his generation—Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson—brought volume and bravado, Bridges excelled in the shadows. A charming pretty boy turned weary and soulful iconoclast, his characters have never been showy. As The Dude in “The Big Lebowski” or Bad Blake in “Crazy Heart,” he’s moved into his roles and lived in them—“enough,” as one critic wrote as early as 1973, “to make a picture worth seeing.”
“I’m not sure what to make of all that,” Bridges told Variety at Film at Lincoln Center Monday evening, where the actor received the prestigious Chaplin Award. “It’s shocking for myself to think about how many films I’ve done,” he said. “Each film is like a little lifetime. I was a reluctant actor at first. It took many...
