Who is the best female TV star of all time? Our new photo gallery above takes on the tough task of ranking the 30 greatest actresses and performers. Agree or disagree with our choices?
With over 70 years of television to consider, we had to provide ourselves with a few rules to help simplify things. One of those was that every woman in our gallery must have been an ongoing leading lady at some point, preferably more often than not. That’s why you will not see such classic supporting actresses as Vivian Vance, Doris Roberts or Rhea Perlman.
In order to place them in the rankings, we were looking at a combination of quality (top rated shows with the public or critics), quantity (number of shows and TV appearances), Emmy wins and nominations, plus overall legacy and iconic nature. They also needed to be on television regularly for at least the last 15 years or more.

“The Good Wife” introduced Carrie Preston‘s Elsbeth Tascioni back in 2010. She was so popular with fans that she also featured in the spin-off show “The Good Fight.” Now Preston and Elsbeth take center stage in the brand new spin-off “Elsbeth.”
CBS’ hit drama series follows Elsbeth as she carries out work as an unconventional attorney and helps the NYPD catch criminals with her astute observations. Preston was excellent in her guest role in “The Good Wife” but she is even better here as the main course, as critics have noted.
Ben Travers (Indie Wire) observed: “Preston knows the exact pitch at which to play Elsbeth. Never grating yet always pesky, her unrelenting positivity (and general relentlessness) would undoubtedly get old, fast, in real life. Cops and criminals alike are exhausted by her, but audiences can more easily appreciate her dogged demeanor because a) we know she’s on the right track,...

Last Thursday, FX confirmed that its adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” will continue past its first season and thus compete as a drama series rather than a limited one at the upcoming Emmys. Since it had spent the preceding three weeks as Gold Derby’s predicted Best Limited Series winner and was expected to reap several acting nominations, every drama and limited race was shaken up by its reclassification – and the dust still has not settled.
Within 48 hours of the “Shōgun” shift, our 2,500+ Emmy predictors came to the consensus that it will be nominated for Best Drama Series and all of the corresponding main acting awards. Even lead actor Cosmo Jarvis and supporting actress Moeka Hoshi, who never quite managed to reach predicted nominee status before, quickly broke into our forecasted drama lineups. Makeup design doesn’t always mean prosthetics or extremes — that’s why the Emmy Awards smartly single out contemporary makeup design as its own category. But too often, those more immediately arresting designs are the ones that get all the attention. Not anymore. Join IndieWire in celebrating the makeup artists creating subtle, character-specific work for contemporary shows.
In “The Morning Show,” viewers get a glimpse of the glamorous and grueling nature of producing national morning news shows through fictional Uba network anchors Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon).
Season 3 of the Apple TV+ drama sees Uba anchors and executives in multiple new locations beyond their home base of New York City, from Texas to the Hamptons to Montana (and even space!). These environments impacted the work of makeup department head Cindy Williams in unexpected ways.

There’s a reason the most successful night of primetime used to be branded “Must See TV.” In the late 1990s, NBC’s “ER” would attract more than 30 million viewers a week in its Thursday 10 p.m. time slot. At its peak, the medical drama came close to commanding a 40 share — meaning that 40% of people watching TV in that hour were tuned in to the Warner Bros. Television series.
Today, such an accomplishment is beyond the reach of any TV program short of the Super Bowl. Viewers now watch TV in very different ways than they did 25 years ago, on their own timetables. Spending big to establish their businesses, streamers ushered in an era of series that came with shorter episode orders, high-wattage A-list talent and pricey production values. For nearly a decade, the traditions of old-fashioned linear TV have paled by comparison to the big-budget, commercial-free fare offered by Netflix,...

CBS’ big hit police procedural drama show Elsbeth is wrapping up its first season run, but isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Coming as an unofficial The Good Wife’s spinoff, Elsbeth owes its renewal for yet another season to its compelling plot and some past connections to the 2009 political drama starring Julianna Margulies.
As the show still has its television run and keeps teasing the grand finale, Elsbeth’s main star opened up about one guest star that she would like to have on the show’s set. Fair to say that the actress’ desire coincides with the one of quite a lot of fans across the world.
Talking about the show’s finale at CBS’ fall schedule reveal party last week, Elsbeth Tascioni’s actress Carrie Preston revealed that “it would be really cool” to have Julianna Margulies as a guest star in the show’s next season.

Months before she won the 2023 Best Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy for the first season of FX’s “The Bear,” it was reported that Ayo Edebiri would move up to lead for season two. According to our odds chart, she looks set to become the 12th woman to reap both supporting and lead Emmy bids (in that order) for a single role on a single series. If she takes the gold again, she will become the first to win both comedy actress awards in that order for one show.
Edebiri’s win in the supporting race at the strike-delayed 75th Emmys was preceded by victories in lead for season two at the 2024 Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards. Having just blocked Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”) from achieving back-to-back supporting Emmy honors, she now faces the challenge of fending off two former lead champions: Jean Smart and Quinta Brunson.

Upon sweeping the four main drama acting categories at the 2021 Emmy Awards, “The Crown” stars Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Tobias Menzies all joined a special roster of lead or supporting TV academy honorees who were not part of their shows’ original casts. As members of the expansive Netflix series’ second of three distinct ensembles, this quartet and their co-stars were replaced ahead of season five by a new group of actors, some of whom could be added to said exclusive winners club later this year.
According to Gold Derby’s odds, the performer from the sixth and final season of “The Crown” with the best shot at Emmy glory is supporting female frontrunner Elizabeth Debicki. She played the role of Princess Diana for two seasons, finishing the job started by younger season four cast member Emma Corrin. Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) being the only 2023 nominee eligible to return puts her in the frontrunner position and leaves the remaining slots open to a bevy of formidable newcomers and past hopefuls.
“The Morning Show” cast mates Julianna Margulies and Holland Taylor are each seeking a second win in this category after respectively being honored for “ER” (1995) and “The Practice” (1999). The same applies to Archie Panjabi (“Hijack”), who previously won for “The Good Wife” (2010).
“Sugar” actress Anna Gunn is vying for a third trophy of this kind following her dual “Breaking Bad” victories (2013-2014). The political drama show The Good Wife starring Julianna Margulies may have ended its run of seven years back in 2016, but the show’s universe keeps expanding to this day.
Now that CBS has given an entire brand new show to The Good Wife’s cameo character, the idea to mix it all up and bring more of familiar faces back to the screen seems even more tempting — at least for the devoted fans.
The original show follows Alicia Florrick, a housewife with two kids to raise and an ended career of a successful attorney under her belt. After Alicia’s husband Peter gets into a public sex scandal and then is taken to jail for political corruption, her life’s new reality forces Alicia to come back to her professional roots in a need of providing for her children.

CBS is adding to its already extensive list of series renewals for the 2024-25 season.
The latest pickup for the network is Elsbeth, the Columbo-esque Good Wife offshoot starring Carrie Preston as the title character, lawyer-turned-investigator Elsbeth Tascioni. The series has performed well over its first few episodes, ranking as the second most watched newcomer on the broadcast networks this season (behind fellow CBS show Tracker). It averages about 11 million viewers over five weeks of viewing on all platforms (CBS, Paramount+ and CBS TV apps).
“Elsbeth has charmed audiences with its singular blend of delightful humor, distinctive ‘how-done-it’ storytelling, and the inventive, brilliant quirkiness of Elsbeth Tascioni,” said CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach in a statement. “Executive producers Robert and Michelle King have a stellar track record for creating critically acclaimed series full of unforgettable characters and, alongside showrunner Jonathan Tolins and his writing team, have developed an incredibly...

Cybil Reynolds may have experienced an epic downfall in “The Morning Show’s” third season, but the woman who plays her can’t stop rising in our Emmy odds. After hovering right outside the Top 8 in February and for the majority of March, Holland Taylor recently vaulted into eighth place in our Best Drama Supporting Actress rankings. And if you haven’t added her to your own predictions yet, you might want to change that Asap.

The brash hospital show ER burst onto television screens in 1994 as part of NBC's famed Thursday night lineup and changed the landscape of medical dramas forever -- or at least that's how it seems a few decades on, since the genre arguably hasn't changed much.
What was it about ER that made it such a hit back then, and how did it alter the structure of medical dramas to such an extent that we can see the ripple effect even now?
ER had a gritty, realistic feel that was vastly different than other medical shows of that era and was a perfect storm of dynamic camera work, overlapping storylines, and innovative casting.
The show was shot on 35mm film and seemed more like "real life" than a perfectly lit videotaped sitcom. ER also pioneered the use of Steadicams and long tracking shots outside of movie sets.

The streaming services are starting to make medical dramas, which until now have been the exclusive terrain of broadcast networks, and Max just one-upped its competitors.
On Tuesday, Max announced a 15-episode, straight-to-series order for “The Pitt,” a medical drama that will reunite “ER” executive producer John Wells and star Noah Wyle.
Wyle will star and serve as executive producer. Wyle is a five-time Emmy nominee for his performance as charismatic doctor John Carter on the iconic medical procedural “ER.” He is also known for the fantasy series “The Librarians” and the sci-fi series “Falling Skies.”

Quentin Tarantino is one of our most renowned cinephiles, as illustrated by his encyclopedic knowledge of film history, genres, and Hollywood stars. He is mostly known for creating audacious films such as "Pulp Fiction" and the "Kill Bill" series. While he has co-directed other movies (such as "Four Rooms" and "Sin City"), it is Tarantino's originals that have left a distinct impact on popular culture.
But did you know that Tarantino has also dabbled in television directing? As "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" demonstrated, he is just as savvy about television as he is about film, with a wide knowledge of its unique ecosystem and history. He brought this deep appreciation of television to his work on the eerie two-part season 5 finale of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" entitled "Grave Danger" in 2005. When the Los Angeles Times asked the wildly creative director if he felt "trapped by working within the confines of network television,...

Julianna Margulies and Peter Gallagher will star in a new Delia Ephron play on Broadway this fall.
The new play, called Left on Tenth and based on Ephron’s memoir, will be directed by Susan Stroman, director and choreographer of The Producers. Daryl Roth will produce. A theater and dates for the Broadway engagement have not yet been announced.
The play follows Delia, who co-wrote You’ve Got Mail and the play Love, Loss and What I Wore with her sister, Nora Ephron, as she reconnects with a man from her past and “falls into her own romantic comedy,” as she battles cancer.
Marguiles, a star of The Morning Show and The Good Wife, has previously appeared on Broadway in the 2006 play Festen. Gallagher has ten Broadway credits, most recently starring in the 2015 revival of On the Twentieth Century, and is also known for his on-screen work, including on The O.C. and Grace and Frankie.

In his acceptance speech, Glazer shared that he made The Zone of Interest in an effort to show “where dehumanization leads at its worst” and how it shapes the past and present.

Best Drama Supporting Actress is the only Emmy acting category “The Morning Show” has yet to crack, but it’s now the one the series could dominate like only one other show has managed to. Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Julianna Margulies, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor are all eligible for the Apple TV+ drama in the category this year, and if they all make the cut, “The Morning Show” will join “The White Lotus: Sicily” as the only shows to nab five drama supporting actress nominations in a single year.
“The White Lotus: Sicily” set the record last year with bids for Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza, Simona Tabasco and eventual champ Jennifer Coolidge. Before that, the record for a series in the category was four nominees in one year, which only two shows had been able to field: “Game of Thrones” in 2019 and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2021.

Elsbeth has premiered on CBS, and we're all in.
The show garnered 4.5 million views and improved its CBS time slot by 45% over last year.
Already fielding favorable comparisons to the classic Columbo and the more modern success Poker Face, Elsbeth combines a winning story formula with good timing to set the show up as an instant hit.
This spin-off of The Good Wife and The Good Fight was an odd choice. The show hinges on Elsbeth's new job observing the NYPD for signs of corruption.
Why would a lawyer from Chicago be called in for this job? What are her credentials?
As she states in the pilot episode, Elsbeth has never actually been to a crime scene -- she's only seen crime scene photos in the courtroom.
So how can someone with no experience in crime scene investigation even spot corruption?
Dropping an unlikely character into a detective procedural was a bold move,...

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

Amid Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas, Jewish entertainment figures have come together to issue an open letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences criticizing their exclusion from being specified as an underrepresented group.
“An inclusion effort that excludes Jews is both steeped in and misunderstands antisemitism,” reads the letter, organized by the group Jew in the City’s Hollywood Bureau for Jewish Representation. “Jewish people being excluded from the Motion Picture Academy’s Representation and Inclusion Standards is discriminating against a protected class by invalidating their historic and genetic identity.”
The Academy’s standards, unveiled in 2020 as part of its Aperture 2025 diversity initiative, describes a number of identities that it considers “underrepresented groups”: women, LGBTQ+, having cognitive or physical difficulties or being deaf or hard of hearing, as well as underrepresented racial or ethnic groups. As the Israel-Hamas crisis enters its third month, Hollywood, with its sizable Jewish population and increasing divides among liberals as well as progressives over justice issues, has emerged as a proxy informational battle-space in the conflict. There is a nervousness among industry insiders connected to the Golden Globes that activists may take advantage of the global reach of the kick-off major awards season event — the first to be televised since Hamas’ Oct. 7 massacre — for their own ends.

Most of us can agree that TV shows thrive on their romantic storylines, but over the years love triangles have increasingly taken over TV’s romantic storylines and divided fans.
Iconic love triangles have become a commonly used trope to hook viewers in. There is nothing like declaring who the heroine should be with and having to stick with them through the rollercoaster of intense declarations of love and breakups. But despite how annoying and cliché love triangles can be, they lead to some of the best TV moments. So, naturally we decided to take a look at TV’s most infuriating love triangles.

Actress Julianna Margulies faced backlash after making comments regarding the lack of support Israel has received from the black and LGBT communities.
Last month, Margulies appeared on Andy Ostroy‘s podcast, The Back Room. In the episode, she accuses the black and LGBT communities of antisemitism because their support has lied to the Palestinians.
“The fact that the entire black community isn’t standing with us to me says either they just don’t know, or they’ve been brainwashed to hate Jews,” she said.
She later accuses the LGBTQ community of the same thing.
“It’s those kids who are spewing this antisemitic hate that have no idea if they stepped foot in an Islamic country – these people who want us to call them they/them, or whatever they want us to call them – which I have respectfully really made a point of doing, like, be whoever you want...

Gal Gadot has called out the silence over media reports of sexual violence committed by Hamas during the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel, and the ongoing danger female hostages face as their captivity nears almost three months.
“The world has failed the women of October 7th,” the Israeli actress wrote in an impassioned message posted on her Instagram on Sunday. “We claim we stand against rape, violence against women. We will not let women be victimized and then silenced. We say we believe women, stand with women, speak out for women.”
Gadot appeared to be referring to some Western countries, including the U.S. and the U.K., questioning the validity of Israeli media reports of sexual violence by Hamas on Oct. 7. Several prominent figures in Hollywood, including Julianna Margulies, have also questioned the silence of women’s advocacy groups over reports of horrific cases of rape, sexual torture and mutilation of women by Hamas.

The 57-year-old actress came under fire for remarks she made on the November 20 episode of Andy Ostroy‘s Back Room podcast.
“It’s those kids who are spewing this antisemitic hate, that have no idea if they stepped foot in an Islamic country — these people who want us to call them they/them, or whatever they want us to call them, which I have respectfully made a point of doing — it’s those people that will be the first people beheaded and their heads played with like a soccer ball. And that’s who they’re supporting? Terrorists who don’t want women to have their rights? LGBTQ people get executed,” she said.

Julianna Margulies has spoken out following comments she made about Black and LGBTQ supporters of Palestine, saying they were being “brainwashed to hate Jews.”
The Morning Show star has released a statement that reads, “I am horrified by the fact that statements I made on a recent podcast offended the Black and Lgbtqia+ communities, communities I truly love and respect. I want to be 100% clear: Racism, homophobia, sexism, or any prejudice against anyone’s personal beliefs or identity are abhorrent to me, full stop.”
She continued, “Throughout my career I have worked tirelessly to combat hate of all kind, end antisemitism, speak out against terrorist groups like Hamas, and forge a united front against discrimination. I did not intend for my words to sow further division, for which I am sincerely apologetic.”
Margulies’ apology comes a day after controversial comments she made on a Nov. 21 podcast resurfaced on social media Thursday.
