Grey’s Anatomy has broken many hearts over its 20 seasons (and counting), but it’s also angered fans with how certain characters were written off. Realistically, no one wants to see their favorite character leave a show, but if it’s handled the right way, a good departure allows the legacy of the character to remain untouched.
While there are many factors that go into planning and handling a character’s exit, the final product can be hit or miss. Here are what we consider to be the worst and most unnecessary exits from TV’s longest-running primetime medical drama.
10. April Kepner
While April’s (Sarah Drew) departure in season 14 could be considered a “happy ending” for the character, it was deeply unsatisfying for viewers. She had apparently been dating Matthew (Justin Bruening), who she left at the altar, for months and didn’t tell anyone. That itself is surprising but...

If Hollywood aims to bring older audiences back to theaters by making movies about them, I submit Summer Camp as a case study in what works (Eugene Levy!) and what definitely does not — painfully flat attempts at wackiness being the chief offender. Veering between strained slapstick and thoughtful tête-à-têtes, this boomer-focused reunion comedy strands a game cast of accomplished septuagenarians in a mostly laugh-free zone of zip lines and predictable beats.
Director Castille Landon’s screenplay offers some well-crafted dialogue, but it never adds up to anything resembling momentum. Landon, whose previous features include the Katherine Heigl starrer Fear of Rain and a couple of entries in the After series of romance movies, does get the setting right in a story that brings together three lifelong friends at the sleepaway camp where they first met. The friends are played by Diane Keaton (who also serves as a producer), Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.

Is “Grey’s Anatomy” on tonight? Yes. ABC’s long-running medical drama airs its 430th episode, titled “Burn It Down,” on Thursday night. It serves as the highly anticipated Season 20 finale. Here is the official synopsis: “Wildfires threaten the Seattle region, leading to a flood of patients and emergency procedures; the doctors juggle overcapacity in the ER, complex surgeries and personal stress; Meredith makes a rash decision that can’t be undone.” Watch the promo video above for Season 20 Episode 10, and read on for everything to know about “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl was once a rising star in movies and television in the late 2000s. However, her career saw a declining graph after she went on to publicly bash her movie with director Judd Apatow. In 2007, Heigl starred opposite Seth Rogen in Apatow’s comedy film Knocked Up. She had brutal criticism for the film in a 2008 interview, where she called the film sexist.

The film also starred Marvel star Paul Rudd and Apatow’s real-life spouse Leslie Mann. The director responded to the comments sharing that he expected an apology from the actress. Interestingly, Apatow earned flak from Tom Cruise’s fans for brutally trolling him while hosting DGA 2023.

The golden girl of the early 2000s, Katherine Heigl, was the reigning queen of rom-coms. The uptight, perfect-girl character with a soft heart almost came naturally to her as she portrayed different versions of the same character in a handful of beloved cult classics. The opposites-attract trope is heavily prevalent in most Heigl-starrer romances, and that makes her roles highly relatable for the audience. Heigl is best known for her role as Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy, for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2007. Nearly two decades have passed since Grey’s Anatomy first opened the doors of Seattle Grace Hospital. It all started with the aftermath of a one-night stand: A guy picks up a girl at a bar the evening before her first day of work. And then the guy turns out to be her boss. That initial spark grew into an unforgettable TV romance. But what makes Grey’s Anatomy so special isn’t just that love story. The series was a fresh look at the medical drama, mixing personal complications with high-stakes medical procedures.

Netflix may have a huge list of everyday exciting releases, but the nostalgia for the 2000s still lives on — and the streaming’s recent top chart results are another proof of it.
This time it’s Seth Rogan’s iconic romantic comedy that, unlike many more movies alike, was actually a stunning success in every respect — and after almost 20 years since its release the film is one of Netflix’s most watched movies.
Knocked Up, a 2007 romcom starring Seth Rogan and Katherine Heigl cemented Judd Apatow’s status of a romantic comedy master after he already blew everyone away thanks to an earlier collaboration with Rogan, 2005’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
Knocked Up’s plot follows Ben, a binge-loving loafer with no desire for commitment, who ends up having a one-night stand with determined career builder Allison — eventually the latter finds out that she’s pregnant. Having come to a common decision to keep the child,...

As “Suits” continues to overperform as a streaming acquisition on Netflix, the hit legal drama is finally coming to broadcast TV. Primetime programming service MyNetwork TV has picked up an off-network run of “Suits” for this fall, making its broadcast TV debut.
The pickup was announced Monday by Frank Cicha, executive VP of programming for Fox Television Stations. “It’s become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible, to launch obscure product on broadcast TV. ‘Suits’ is arguably the most buzzworthy scripted series of the last half decade, and MyNet looks forward to amplifying its success by introducing it to the broadcast television audience. And we’re discussing some fun ways to do just that.”

Dr. Alex Karev, brought to life by Justin Chambers, is one of Grey’s Anatomy’s most dynamic characters, permanently leaving a mark on the series even after his exit. While he started off as a jerk back in season one, he quickly became a fan favorite as we peeled back the layers of who he actually was.
Against all odds, he didn’t just survive his time at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, but thrived. Not only was he Meredith’s person after Cristina left, but he was there for all other characters when they needed someone over the years. Then entered Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), who he fell deeply in love with and eventually married. So why did he suddenly leave in season 16 and why was it such an awful ending for the character? Let’s break it down.

Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy, TV’s longest-running primetime medical drama, is quickly approaching. If past premiere episodes are anything to go by, season 20’s first installment “We’ve Only Just Begun” is going to feature an abundance of drama to set up the rest of the season.
The series first premiered back in 2005 and follows the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial, who are constantly faced with life-or death decisions. Over the years, we’ve seen fan favorite characters come and go, new ones join the ensemble, and many devastating character deaths. So picking the 10 most dramatic season premieres was not only a difficult task, but a real emotional rollercoaster.

It took a surgeon’s scalpel to excise the must-see episodes out of the 420 that Grey’s Anatomy has aired. But you don’t have to stop with these: Hulu now carries the run of the medical drama, plus new episodes starting March 15, the day after they air on ABC. 1. “A Hard Day’s Night” (Season 1 Episode 1) The first shift at Seattle Grace for surgical interns Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), George O’Malley (T.R. Knight), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) sets the tone for the instantly addictive series. The hour is marked by competition, anxiety, lust and bad decisions—like Meredith unwittingly bedding her new boss, skilled neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). 2. “As We Know It” (Season 2 Episode 17) Everett Collection This iconic conclusion of a nail-biting two-parter finds Meredith with her hand inside a patient’s chest cavity, trying to stem his bleeding and keep an embedded explosive from detonating.

If you were to design a global sales agent in a lab, they would come out looking a lot like Tamara Birkemoe.
Born in Italy to Chilean parents and raised between Sweden and Rome before moving to the U.S. for film school, the multilingual exec has been a force on the indie film scene since her first job, straight out of UCLA, for Mark Damon’s Mdp Worldwide. For the next 16 years, Birkemoe put in time at Mdp (later Media 8 Entertainment) and then at Foresight Unlimited, the production and sales group Damon set up in 2005. The slate she oversaw ranged from studio-released big-budget action fare, such as Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor and Baltasar Kormákur’s 2 Guns, both Universal Pictures films, which grossed $155 million and $132 million worldwide, respectively; to Kevin Costner starrer The Upside of Anger, a New Line release that earned $28 million worldwide; and Patty Jenkins’ low-budget true-crime drama Monster,...

Mira Sorvino is giving an update on the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel that is in the works.

Emmys producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay had reason to be upbeat the morning after the kudocast: In what seems to be a rarity for awards shows these days, their production earned almost universally high marks from critics and viewers. For the 75th annual celebration, the Jesse Collins Entertainment trio leaned into nostalgia and the history of television to create a three-hour event that paid tribute to the small screen.
“It was ambitious, and we were like, ‘Is this actually going to work?’ But we felt good about it in the end,” Collins told Variety on Tuesday morning. Except for one thing: The 75th Emmys on Fox faced an NFL wild card game, as well as news coverage of the Iowa caucuses. Throw in awards show fatigue (coming right after the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards) and confusion over the delayed Emmys (pushed four months from...

Emmys 2024 Highlights: Moments That Made The Award Memorable ( Photo Credit – Emmys – Television Academy / Instagram )
The 75th Emmy Awards is one of the most prestigious awards in the television world, and this year, the shows – Beef, Succession, and The Bear dominated the ceremony by bagging most of the awards. Like every award show, it, too, was an eventful one with some fantastic moments. Some were emotional, and some were funny. Let us take a look at the Emmys 2024 Highlights.
For the unversed, the Emmys took place after a delay of four months due to the Hollywood strikes. It was initially set to take place in September 2023. Anthony Anderson hosted the award ceremony, and he had his mother in the audience to help him occasionally carry forward the ceremony smoothly.

The Emmys were screwed.
Delayed by four months because of dual strikes that upended an entire industry for the better part of 2023, the 75th Primetime Emmys were, under the best of circumstances, going to be impossibly stale by the time they were presented in mid-January.
When they’re presented in September, the Emmys have the awards landscape in general and specifically the TV awards landscape entirely to themselves — the culmination of an artificially constructed TV calendar designed to give pride of place to the TV Academy and its annual distribution of shiny baubles.
But with this new schedule, one that will hopefully never be repeated, the Emmys were stuck as the third awards show honoring television in eight days. The Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards and now the Emmys — that’s three awards shows that have given an overwhelming haul of trophies to Netflix’s Beef, HBO’s Succession...

On Monday evening, the biggest names in television — and Anthony Anderson’s mom, Doris — congregated at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater for the 2023 Emmy Awards. But with so many A-listers on hand, the cameras could only catch so much for viewers at home. Here’s what they missed:
— It appears that that capital T talent has been velvet curtained from the countless plebes (cough, cough, writers and executives) desperately trying to get a drink in the Peacock lobby. There are several exceptions. White Lotus nominee F. Murray Abraham — not canceled for everybody — stops for multiple selfies before making his way into the theater.
— And, since last we Emmy’d in this building (Rip Microsoft theater!), they’ve installed those no-check out snack stations where they just Know what you take, like the airport bodegas or those apocalyptic Amazon Fresh supermarkets. The long-delayed Emmy Awards for the 2022-2023 TV season had to overcome the challenge of seeming like a complete afterthought — and for the most part it succeeded.
The ceremony for the 75th Emmys was designed as a tribute to the medium, and featured reunions from shows such as “All in the Family,” “The Sopranos,” “Martin” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” the last of which featured the beloved, departed cast members Katherine Heigl and Justin Chambers, alongside Og stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. Among the evening’s highlights were Jennifer Coolidge thanking “all the evil gays,” Niecy Nash-Betts thanking herself and “every Black and Brown woman who have gone unheard, yet overpoliced,” and a moving, hilarious appearance by nominee Christina Applegate as the show’s first presenter. And HBO’s “Succession” took its final victory lap after the Jesse Armstrong-created series ended in May of last year, including...

The 75th Emmys on Monday, January 15, included an eagerly-awaited reunion of beloved Grey’s Anatomy cast members Ellen Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr., and Chandra Wilson. The host of the show, Anthony Anderson, began the sequence by recounting his mother, Mama Doris, and her love for medical dramas, especially Grey’s Anatomy. Then, the cast walked into the mock medical room in full red carpet regalia. “When the first episode of Grey’s Anatomy aired in March of 2005, I’m not sure if Shonda Rhimes knew that she had created a show that would have a lasting imprint on television and create lifelong friendships,” Pompeo said to the audience. They all spoke on the impact of the series, with Heigl cheekily mentioning how much things have changed since the show’s inception, a nod to her shifting away from the series. “And yes, there have been changes over the years,...

Katherine Heigl joined her former “Grey’s Anatomy” cast members Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson on stage during the Emmy Awards in what was one of the more high-profile reunions for the stars. Step behind the velvet ropes to see how the stars celebrated television’s biggest night. Though not quite back to pre-pandemic levels, Hollywood hit the party circuit with a slate of events with stops at the TV Academy’s Governors Ball, Netflix, Disney, HBO and Apple TV+ after the Fox telecast.

Some things change, others stay the same. HBO and streaming counterpart Max once again topped the competition with a field-leading 31 wins Monday night thanks to eight trophies for The Last of Us, six for Succession, five for The White Lotus and another two for Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, among others. “Everyone is holding an Emmy,” relayed one guest as he surveyed the scene inside San Vicente Bungalows, which hosted the party of the night thanks to all that glittering gold and stars like Pedro Pascal making rounds. You may have heard that the 75th edition of the Emmy Awards is finally happening on Monday, capping a nearly four-month delay resulting from the twin WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. I think “Gunsmoke” and “The Andy Griffith Show” were still all the rage when this process began, JFK was President and a loaf of bread was a quarter. Alas, I exaggerate (though just a bit). But for this and no doubt other reasons, the TV Academy is clearly in a nostalgic mood, slating mini-reunions and tributes to and/or visual recreations of a dozen shows to mark the occasion.
The idea, according to the Emmy producers, is to honor television throughout the decades of its existence, from the 1950s (“I Love Lucy”), to the 1960s (“The Carol Burnett Show”), the 1970s (“All in the Family”), the 1980s (“Cheers”) and the 1990s (“Ally McBeal” and “Martin”) through the early 2000s.
