Few types of movies sum up the 1990s quite like “dad thrillers.” A term popularized by the brilliant Max Read a few years ago, the dad thriller is a subgenre of thriller movies that was largely designed to appeal to older male viewers or otherwise featured thematic elements associated with that demographic. Yes, such movies often feature men being really good dads, but it’s about more than that. Dad thrillers were often closer to ’70s paranoia thrillers like Three Days of the Condor, which pitted crusaders of truth against staggering odds in a slow-burn narrative. They typically featured lawyers, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and dads in other thoroughly professional fields who were very good at their jobs. Many were based on books or otherwise inspired by the fictional and non-fictional texts dads of that generation loved to read. Some were theatrical hits but most of them found a home in living rooms everywhere.

Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.
Aside from the fact that the current economic realities of the TV business will likely never support another drama going to 21 seasons, broadcast networks will also likely never take chances on so many unconventional ideas: a sci-fi drama on a deserted island that set the tone for modern genre fare, a...

CBS announced not only its fall schedule, but a full lineup for the 2024-2025 broadcast season at a Los Angeles press briefing on Thursday.
As “Young Sheldon” is currently wrapping up its final season on Thursdays at 8 p.m., a headline of the slate is spinoff series “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” taking over that spot, leading into “Ghosts” at 8:30 p.m. Additionally, “Tracker” — not only the No. 1 new series of the 2023-2024 season, but the most-watched series overall — is getting an earlier position, moving from Sundays at 9 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Several CBS traditions remain intact. Tuesdays remain “FBI” night with the flagship series airing at 8 p.m. followed by “FBI: International” at 9 p.m. and “FBI: Most Wanted” at 10 p.m. On Mondays, “NCIS” holds onto its 9 p.m. timeslot, and after the cancellation of “NCIS: Hawai’i,” it’s 9:30 p.m. position will be taken...

CBS‘ fall 2024 lineup is going to be stacked. Joining the 18 returning shows in the fall on the network are new scripted dramas Matlock (starring Kathy Bates) and NCIS: Origins, comedies Poppa’s House (starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr.) and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage (starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment), and competition show The Summit. Still to come in the midseason are new drama Watson (starring Morris Chestnut), The Amazing Race, and Hollywood Squares with Drew Barrymore as the Center Square in January as part of the new “Game Show Wednesdays” with The Price Is Right at Night and Raid the Cage. Notably, CBS will not be airing new episodes during the 10/9c time slot on Sundays during the football season (which tends to delay primetime). CBS today became the first broadcast network to present its fall schedule. And, in line with CBS’ new strategy for long-term development and planning, the network announced its schedule for the entire 2024-25 season. It is contingent on IATSE making a new deal with the studios to avoid a strike. At the unveiling of the schedule, George Cheeks, President and CEO of CBS, said that they have contingency plans should a work stoppage occur but wouldn’t elaborate further. “If we need to delay, we are ready,” he said.

If you read the headline and are asking yourselves, pilots? what pilots? — you are not wrong. It’s been largely a 2024 pilot season without pilots. A grand total of maybe one of them is expected to factor into any fall decisions as the broadcast networks prepare to unveil their schedules, starting with CBS tomorrow, May 2.
Needless to say, the broadcast pilot season is no longer the industry obsession it once was this time of year, with back-to-back disruptions from the pandemic and the dual Hollywood strikes providing the proverbial final nail in the coffin of the decades-old pilot cycle. But for tradition’s sake, here are some insights into the networks’ current development plans.

Both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas” have been canceled at CBS, Variety has learned.
“So Help Me Todd” is currently airing its second season at the broadcaster, while “CSI: Vegas” is airing its third. Both shows are scheduled to air their season finales in May, which will now serve as series finales.
The two shows were some of the few CBS shows awaiting words on their fates for next season. The only other CBS shows with pending renewal statuses are “The Equalizer” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” They are both solid performers, with “So Help Me Todd” averaging 7.7 million viewers an episode in multiplatform Live+35 and “CSI: Vegas” averaging 7.6 million. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, CBS simply did not have enough room on the schedule to bring them back.
In addition to its many previously announced renewals, CBS already has a number of new shows set to debut next season.

Film icon Pam Grier has teamed with Village Roadshow Pictures to develop a project based on her bestselling 2010 memoir, “Foxy: My Life in Three Acts.”

Kobi Libii’s debut feature The American Society of Magical Negroes starts on a promising note. Aren, a spindly and awkward artist (an endearing Justice Smith) loiters near a yarn sculpture in a gallery. He seems lost in the sea of roving patrons and bustling waiters. It takes a second for us to realize that Aren created the meditative wool work and is struggling to sell it to the mostly white collectors attending this group show. They find the abstract piece illegible; they repeatedly ask about the material (“Is it … yarn?”) while maintaining a distance. These brief encounters are a clever jab by Libii at a visual art world historically enamored of Black figurative artists.
Minor drama ensues after Aren is mistaken for a server by a patron and unceremoniously fired by his gallerist. Before he can think straight, the dejected artist finds himself touring the gothic halls of The American Society of Magical Negroes,...

CBS is looking to scare up more laughs after handing an early Season 4 renewal to supernatural comedy Ghosts.
It is the latest renewal order for the Paramount-owned network, which also handed a third season to Fire Country and gave Justin Hartley series Tracker a second season earlier this month.
Ghosts, which is based on the BBC’s British comedy, has been a success for CBS since launching in 2021. Its third season is averaging over 10M viewers in live 7-day multiplatform viewing, which is marginally up from last year and streaming numbers are up on Paramount+, where the company said it ranked as its number one comedy in February.

With the labor stoppages over and TV back up and running once again, streaming services are pushing full steam ahead to get regularly scheduled programming back on the market. It doesn’t seem like there would be any room for a show more known for its Nick at Nite run than its original broadcast on ABC, but anyone who ignores the Damon Wayans-centered sitcom is missing out on one of the funniest, most chaotic comedies of the 2000s.
At first glance, My Wife and Kids looks like your typical comedian vehicle from around this time period. So many stand-up comics got their own network sitcom that the genre turned into TV junk food during the late 20th century. Everybody Loves Raymond, Home Improvement, The King of Queens,...

The hit ABC sitcom My Wife and Kids is back in the conversation after appearing on Netflix, leaving fans wondering why series mainstay Claire was recast all over again.
My Wife and Kids aired on ABC from 2001 to 2004, running for five seasons and bringing 123 episodes to the screen.
While the series is known for its leading stars Damon Wayans and Tisha Campbell-Martin (who played a mother and father with three kids), much of the attention within the show's cast gets put on Claire Kyle, the middle daughter of the Kyle family who was recast early on.

It’s late January, time when the broadcast networks typically kick off pilot season with their first pilot orders targeting the upcoming fall. Not CBS, which will not be picking pilots in the traditional window; instead the network has five scripted series already on tap for next season and a potential Fire Country spinoff in the works.
There has been nothing typical about the past couple of years between the pandemic and the double Hollywood strike, which disrupted the TV development cycle. Still, while networks like ABC and Fox had signaled a move toward year-round development before the pandemic, CBS had stuck closely to tradition, so many thought the network would eventually revert to its old ways.
That didn’t happen. In a major leadership change at CBS, Amy Reisenbach, the network’s head of current programming of 5.5 years, was named Entertainment President in November 2022. Just a couple of months later,...

To say the writers’ and actors’ strikes changed the landscape of television for the foreseeable future would be an understatement. After both strikes forced many to postpone or tweak their original lineups and schedules, it was the broadcast networks who were perhaps most affected heading into 2024.
With shortened episodic runs for most returning favorites, a slew of high-profile cancellations (and final season announcements) and a lack of new comedies and dramas to promote, the new year is kicking off with a shortage of upcoming series. The majority of greenlit series on the major networks were pushed to the 2024-2025 TV season as a result of the strikes. Viewers will have to wait even longer to catch the debuts of new shows like NBC’s workplace comedy St. Denis Medical (with Wendi McLendon-Covey), Fox’s medical drama Doc (with Molly Parker) and CBS’s father-son comedy (with Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr...

As Hollywood can’t wait to close the book on one of the most disruptive years in history, marked by a industry-paralyzing double strike that shut down production for more than six months, there is a lot of hope riding on 2024. There is also a dose of anxiety about what exactly the new normal might be.
The new year is expected to bring a selling frenzy. With few writers writing spec scripts during the work stoppage as most focused on strike duties, an anticipated post-strike spec market did not materialize. Unsure whether the main networks and platforms would be open for new business right away or busy attaching acting talent to their packages after the November end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, many producers opted to wait until after the holidays to take out their projects.

The National Film Registry just granted immortality to 25 classic films. Every year, the Library of Congress chooses another class to be preserved for posterity, and this year’s group includes some major blockbusters like “Terminator 2,” “Home Alone,” and “Apollo 13.”
To be eligible, a film must be at least 10 years old and carry what the library considers to be “cultural, historic or aesthetic importance,” in consultation with National Film Preservation Board members and other experts.
The list now stands at 875 remarkable films. If you’d like to nominate your favorite film for preservation, just fill out this form.

Following the delays for the 2023-2024 broadcast season due to the writers and actors’ strikes, networks are making plans for the rest of this year and next — and that means shaking a few things up. CBS has announced its winter 2024 schedule, with premiere dates (finally) for fall favorites like NCIS, Blue Bloods, Ghosts, and more in February and, along with that, made a couple moves regarding two of its new shows. Legal drama Matlock starring Kathy Bates and comedy Poppa’s House with Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. are now set for the 2024-2025 broadcast season. Matlock, originally slated to air Sundays at 8/7c in the 2023-2024 season, is a reboot of the 1986 classic series, with Bates starring as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years and ...

“Young Sheldon” isn’t getting any younger, so scripted originals are coming back just in time. CBS will take advantage of this year’s Super Bowl to launch its truncated 2023-2024 primetime lineup the week of February 12. That’s the week that most of its major series will return with new episodes, including the “NCIS” and “FBI” franchises, as well as the network’s returning comedies like the Not-As-Young-As-He-Used-To-Be “Sheldon.”
That makes for a shortened three-and-a-half month TV season, which means that most of CBS’ series this season are expected to be capped at between 10 to 13 episodes, airing from mid-February to May. CBS’ February 2024 lineup is nearly identical to the one the network announced in May for September 2023 (back when it was still optimistic that it might have original episodes in the fall), with two notable exceptions: New legal drama “Matlock,” starring Kathy Bates, and comedy “Poppa’s House,” starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr.,...

Within moments of the SAG-AFTRA strike ending on Wednesday night, the broadcast networks kicked into high gear to salvage the 2023-24 TV season, which suddenly appears possible — barely.
“Night Court” on NBC will be one of the first shows to return to filming starting next week, according to one person close to the production — with numerous other shows close on its heels.

When the first poster for "The Summer I Turned Pretty" season two dropped this spring, it teased a major surprise: the return of David Iacono as Cam Cameron. It's a major departure from Jenny Han's series of books on which the show is based; in the book series, Cam appears briefly in the first installment and never returns.
Iacono, 21, actually knew he was going to be in season two before season one even came out last summer. "I was so excited," he tells Popsugar. "I honestly wasn't expecting to get that call because Cam is not in the second or third book. So I was very, very pleasantly surprised."
"I low-key almost spoiled it," he confesses of his return. "I did an interview and I had said that I was coming back, or hinted at it, and I think people picked up on it on TikTok." As for Cam's journey in the new episodes,...

Hailey Kilgore is finally ready for her leading-lady moment. After scoring breakthrough roles in the Aretha Franklin biopic "Respect" and Starz's "Power Book III: Raising Kanan," the 24-year-old actor and singer is commanding attention on the big screen as the star of "Cinnamon." The Tubi Blaxploitation-inspired thriller, written and directed by Bryian Keith Montgomery Jr., features Kilgore as Jodi, whose aspirations resemble the actor's own as a singer who dreams of chart-topping success. The film - which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival - marks Kilgore's first time anchoring a movie project, which she admittedly tells Popsugar is something she's yearned to do for a while but "never really had the full confidence" to pursue.
"I never felt worthy enough to do it," she shares, adding that her belief was mainly fueled by being a "young Black woman in an industry where [I'm overlooked] if I don't fit a very specific thing.

The news was confirmed to TheWrap by brother and longtime collaborator Tony Gayton, who said Joe’s death came following a four-year battle with prostate cancer.

He was passionate, creative, loud, boisterous, argumentative, unfiltered, soft-hearted, hilarious and terrible at the politics of this cutthroat business,” he said in a statement. “He was a big brother, mentor, writing partner and best friend to me. Our hearts are shattered at his passing and we will miss him forever.”

The news was confirmed to TheWrap by brother and longtime collaborator Tony Gayton, who said Joe’s death came following a four-year battle with prostate cancer.
“Joe was one of a kind.

For the most part, things are staying the same when it comes to CBS‘ fall schedule for the 2023-24 season. The network will have 22 returning shows as part of its lineup next year, along with new dramas Elsbeth, Matlock, and Tracker, and comedy Poppa’s House. Furthermore, both Survivor and The Amazing Race have been expanded to 90 minutes on Wednesdays. CBS has the Super Bowl next year, airing on February 11, 2024, and the premiere of Justin Hartley‘s Tracker has grabbed the post-game time slot. Also arriving midseason is Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr.‘s Poppa’s House. The network is also changing things up on Sunday nights when programming is usually delayed by NFL games running late. CBS is supersizing two of its signature reality franchises: “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race” will permanently expand to 90-minute episodes next season, the network announced Thursday morning as it unveiled its 2023-2024 TV lineup.
The Eye network went first with its fall plans, but there’s a caveat to it all: The writers strike means it’s very likely that primetime won’t look at all like this come September. And indeed, CBS already has contingency plans in place, including several unscripted series waiting in the wings.

The Wednesday switch to just “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race,” for example, simply takes the night’s current 10 p.m. inhabitant, the canceled “True Lies,” out of the equation. Last fall, CBS opened the season with three reality shows on the night: “Survivor,...
