The murderer you’ve been hunting is someone you know. Your husband’s a crooked cop. And then you go into labor while trapped in the wreckage of a car accident. Scrappy PC Jo Marshall (Sophie Rundle) survived all of that in the finale of this six-part mystery thriller, which began with the discovery of a dead man in an underground parking garage after a devastating flood. Jo was obsessed with finding the killer, but in doing so committed crimes of her own and discovered that her colleagues had done far worse. We still have questions about After the Flood, so Rundle agreed to review the evidence. Jo learned that her husband, loving but overprotective Pat, was there when his on-the-take police colleague, Phil Mackie (Nicholas Gleaves) murdered Daniel Eden (Arthur McBain). Not only that, Pat was taking payments from various people for years, too! Can the couple pick up the pieces?...

The Rising originates in the UK; the first season aired there last year. A second season, with a new cast and story, was scheduled to begin filming a few months ago, but those plans were cancelled. Could The Rising be revived if the ratings are good enough on The CW? Stay tuned.

Crime dramas can sit on a pretty broad spectrum: some are campy, cosy and even comfortingly formulaic, whereas others make you need to sleep with the light on. The one guarantee is that in the UK at least, there’s such an appetite for detectives and crime stories that TV will never run out of new cases to solve.
We’ve already had some top examples in 2023, from the Happy Valley and Endeavour finales to the excellent Belfast-based Blue Lights, but there are plenty more fresh crime dramas on the way, from police procedurals to true crime and murder mysteries. See what’s coming up below.
After The Flood
Very much what it says on the tin, After The Flood begins… after a flood, which devastates a town, but when the waters clear they leave behind an unidentified dead man in the lift of an underground car park. PC Joanna Marshall is on the case,...

The BBC’s appointment of Chair Richard Sharp “should not stand” and the process was “fatally flawed,” according to former Director General John Birt.
The embattled Sharp, who is awaiting the result of a government inquiry into his appointment, was described by Birt as “a person of obvious weight and consequence but an unsuitable candidate in one vital respect.”
“I don’t think the appointment should stand,” Birt told the UK’s influential Dcms Committee (Dcmsc) this afternoon. “This isn’t about political connections because governments of all kinds have appointed BBC Chairs who enjoy their confidence. But having known every BBC Chair for decades, governments have tended to have a good record for appointing people with an independent cast of mind, who will protect the BBC’s independence.”

Exclusive: Prasanna Puwanarajah said he jumped at the opportunity to appear in The Crown portraying infamous television journalist Martin Bashir, pummeled by a BBC inquiry that condemned the “deceitful” methods he used to obtain the controversial 1995 Panorama TV interview with Princess Diana, because ”roles like that just don’t really exist for Asian actors.”

Warning: contains The Rising spoilers.
The Rising is filled with all the twists and turns viewers have come to expect from a murder mystery drama. Adapted from Belgian crime thriller Beau Séjour, The Rising is set in small town in the British countryside, with sweeping landscapes and a thriving motocross community. The extra supernatural twist in this particular mystery is that its central character Neve Kelly (Clara Rugaard) is dead from the start, but for some reason remains on earth. She can be seen and heard by a select few, and with their help, she’s determined to figure out who murdered her and why. In this eight-episode Sky series, the first six instalments are spent making discoveries and following false leads. The show pulls no punches, and takes you on an emotional journey where no-one, for the most part, is presented as either entirely good or bad until the killer is revealed.

Warning: contains plot details for The Rising episodes 1-8 .
At first glance, The Rising is just another show about another dead girl. It would be understandable for viewers to dismiss it as one more drama in which a woman suffers life-ending violence at the hand of a man. As the story of a murdered teenager wandering the Earth and trying figure out who took her life, The Rising brings to mind the controversial Netflix adaptation Thirteen Reasons Why, but is tonally closer to acclaimed crime mystery Mare of Easttown. Based on Belgian drama Hotel Beau Sejour and written by The Pact‘s Pete McTighe, it’s set in a closely knit community that keeps everything pleasant enough on the surface, but contains lies, secrets and much worse. However, there’s something different about this series. Its murder victim Neve (Clara Rugaard) is not only present, but also used as more...

Teenage predator preys on emotionally damaged teenagers via the internet and chatrooms and coaxes them into committing suicide in order to feel some kind of thrill to make up for the emptiness of his own life.
What if you were lonely and turned to the internet and chatrooms in order to find some kind of connection with someone out there? What if that internet friend that you had turned to and confided your deepest, darkest secrets to that you couldn't tell anyone else, turned out to be someone that just wanted to prey upon your insecurities instead? And what if that so called internet friend was just trying to drive you to commit suicide, because they didn't have the courage to do it themselves?...

This is the Pure Movies review of Chatroom, directed by Hideo Nakata and starring Aaron Johnson,Daniel Kayluuya, Imogen Poots, Hannah Murray, Matthew Beard, Nicholas Gleaves and Ophelia Lovibond. A unique premise can make a film great, or it can underscore the essential point. Similar to Tarsem Singh’s The Cell (2000, starring Jennifer Lopez) in its attempt to base a film around the literalised world of a killer’s mind, Chatroom attempts to visually realise the world of, you may have guessed, Internet chat rooms. Hideo Nakata, a relatively unknown director over here but with a large catalogue of work that includes the original Japanese Ring films and, bizarrely, the sequel to the American version once planned for Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean), has developed Chatroom from the 2005 play by Irish playwright Enda Walsh. Walsh has also taken over the reigns of developing his own play into a screenplay.

Japanese director Hideo Nakata has certainly given us some great horror flicks in recent years with 'Ring' (Aka 'Ringu'), 'Ring 2' (Aka 'Ringu 2') and 'Dark Water' (Aka 'Honogurai mizu no soko kara') to name a few. And now Nakata is turning his well-worked thriller muscles to British horror 'Chatroom'. The computer related tale that has quite the young Brit cast involved, including '28 Weeks Later's Imogen Poots (below), has just revealed it's two new international one-sheet's. I must say I'm digging the 'Control. Alter. Delete' tag on the second. Check them both out below. Is he a kick-ass, a jackass, or just another middle-class brat with morbid obsessions? Hideo Nakata’s new psychological thriller stars Aaron Johnson, who was last seen as the green-suited wannabe superhero in Kick-Ass. Now he plays a master of manipulation who preys on the weak from the safety of his bedroom. The trappings may be 21st-century, but this web of malice, cyber-bullying and teenage ennui also seems horribly familiar.
William (Aaron Johnson) is a sulky, wild-haired youth, whose parents disapprove of his chatroom activities and want him to engage with the real world. It’s more than just routine concern – the family has been undergoing therapy with a smug counsellor lady, who mistakenly thinks she’s cured William. One obvious source of resentment is Ripley — the name of his well-adjusted elder brother and also the eponymous hero of the...

What if the end of the world came and you survived it? The new BBC America series Survivors explores just that idea. While it’s being presented as pure sci-fi, near future drama, the elements of horror are inescapable. The series is well acted by players who are relative unknowns outside of the UK (see full series one cast list below). A nod must be given to those who have deftly casted the core group which seems to have just the right amount of tense expectancy about the world as it now is.
The first four hours of the series have only begun to explore the range of emotions any survivor would experience. Imagine the slow realization of the growing deaths around you. In this instance, a rouge virus whose mortality rate is something close to 99% has come for humanity. At least it wasn’t a terror attack or asteroid from space.

In series one of the BBC One drama, viewers learnt that Whitaker was responsible for the virus which wiped out most of the world. There was a mistake, lots of people died, but he's the only person actually trying to make this world liveable again," he said. "If a million people die, what's one more in the quest for (more)...
