Lance Oppenheim, a 2019 25 New Face who is something of a non-fiction poet laureate of contemporary loneliness, oddball institutional rituals, and the ways in which fantasy and reality commingle in American life, premieres his latest documentary series, Ren Faire, tonight on HBO. Produced by Elara Pictures, with executive producers including Josh Safdie, Benny Safdie and Ronnie Bronstein, the three-part series tells a Succession-like drama involving an aging “king,” George Coulam, in the midst of deciding which of his employees will take over his sprawling and lucrative Texas-based Renaissance theme park. The series follows Oppenheim’s excellent Spermworld, for which the […]

Do you smell what The Rock is cooking? For the last decade-plus (at least post-Pain & Gain), Dwayne Johnson has been serving up four-quadrant blockbuster slop. Thankfully, he seems to be turning a new direction for The Smashing Machine, which marks the solo directorial feature debut for Benny Safdie after parting ways with his brother Josh Safdie, who’ll be going on to make his forthcoming Adam Sandler-led movie about the baseball trading card industry.
As for The Smashing Machine, with A24 kicking off production recently the first image has now dropped. The film, which marks a Jungle Cruise reunion for Johnson and Emily Blunt, captures the story of legendary Mma fighter Mark Kerr, who was afflicted with addiction and a rocky marriage with Dawn Staples (Blunt).

Adam Sandler and Josh Safdie’s follow-up to 2020’s Uncut Gems is still in the works, following several delays and setbacks.
Here’s a project that we’ve been reporting on for years now and whilst this story won’t confirm anything, it’s fresh news that claims that the movie is still alive. The movie in question is Josh Safdie’s untitled baseball film which will star Adam Sandler.
The project is one of interest because it will mark the pair’s next collaboration after 2020’s Uncut Gems, the nail-biting drama that was bought to us courtesy of Netflix and had audiences everywhere shifting uncomfortably in their seats for the majority of its runtime.
Last year’s strikes were the main culprit for this one not happening sooner. The film is said to focus around baseball and as such, needs to shoot during the sport’s season. Last year...

Have you ever come across a story where the main character shares so many similarities with you that you start believing that the story was based on your life? Well, that is exactly what happened with Julia Fox when she got to read the script of the Safdie Brothers crime thriller, Uncut Gems.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Starring alongside Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems was Julia Fox’s debut in the film industry for which she received a nomination at the Gotham Awards for Breakthrough Actor. Since Josh and Benny Safdie already knew Julia Fox before casting her in the role, the character shared a ton of similarities with the actress, so much so that she thought the Safdie Brothers were spying on her.

“Having worked with them on ‘Uncut Gems,’ I was excited about anything that they were doing,” says “The Curse” cinematographer Maceo Bishop when asked about executive producers Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie approaching him for the Showtime drama series. “And then they said, ‘We’re doing this with Nathan Fielder,’ and I didn’t know Nathan’s work that well. I’d heard his name before, so I did some research and I was like, ‘This is a really interesting combination of aesthetics and ideas coming together.’ The conversation started and almost right away, Benny said ‘To Catch a Predator’ and ‘Candid Camera’ were two of the references for us.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Showtime’s satirical thriller “The Curse,” created by stars Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie and also starring Emma Stone, has exclusively shared its Emmy submission plans with Variety.
The three multi-hyphenates will have more than one chance at recognition across various categories for producing, acting, directing, writing and editing.
“The Curse” explores the tumultuous lives of a married couple (Fielder and Stone), who encounter a string of misfortunes while filming an HGTV series in New Mexico. Their challenges are compounded by a dubious “curse” and a manipulative producer (Safdie), which together threaten both the show and their relationship.
Stone, fresh off her second best actress Oscar win for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” is eyeing her first Emmy nod. She seeks recognition for her portrayal of Whitney, the co-host of the couple’s show about eco-friendly homes. Additionally, Stone is vying for a guest comedy actress nod for...

2019’s Uncut Gems is notable for being a far cry from Adam Sandler’s usual comedic roles, which saw the actor putting his dramatic chops to the display. But while the Grown Ups Star was certainly the highlight of it, he wasn’t the lone reason why the Netflix original was a massive success, as newcomer Julia Fox wasn’t far behind in terms of performance.
While many major stars were eyed for the part of Julia De Fiore in the film, Fox wasn’t deterred by the noise surrounding her, as she was assured the role was made for her.

Adam Sandler may be revisiting one of his most beloved comedies almost 30 years later.
The “Spaceman” and “Uncut Gems” star is said to have developed a script for “Happy Gilmore 2,” a sequel to his iconic 1996 film. Original actor Christopher McDonald said during Audacy radio show “92.3 The Fan” that he saw a draft of the script.
“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re going to love this,'” McDonald said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.'”
McDonald aded, “Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t want to be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Buddy Duress, the actor who appeared in two Safdie Brothers films including 2017’s Good Time starring Robert Pattinson, died last November of what his brother said this week was “cardiac arrest from a drug cocktail.” Duress was 38.
Duress’ death was announced on social media last week by director Jay Karales, whose upcoming film Mass State Lottery features Duress. The cause of death was announced yesterday to People by the actor’s brother Christopher Stathis (Duress was born Michael C. Stathis).
“This man was an absolute treasure,” Karales, known professionally as LowRes Wünderbred, wrote. “Without a doubt, Buddy Duress was one of the most entertaining people I’ve ever met and his stories were unrivaled. I remember seeing him in Good Time in 2017 and saying, ‘That is what the future of acting needs to be. Carey Mulligan says she’d love to star in a rom-com with Adam Sandler following their work together in the new Johan Renck-directed Netflix drama “Spaceman.”
“The Wedding Singer’ is one of my favorite movies, ‘50 First Dates,’ everything he’s done with Jennifer Aniston, I am there for it,” Mulligan told me at the “Spaceman” premiere Monday night at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. “We have to do a rom-com 100 percent!”
And she’s already got the pitch – sort of: “We have to pick the location first where we want to have a really nice holiday and then build the story around that.”
Sandler stars in “Spaceman” as an astronaut on a solo, year-long mission in space. As he comes to realize that his marriage is in trouble (Mulligan plays his wife), he also starts seeing and talking to a giant spider (voiced by Paul Dano) that suddenly appears on his ship.

Fans of the film industry are divided when it comes to Adam Sandler. You either really enjoy his movies or you simply don’t. There is no in-between. The actor is mainly known for his work in the comedy genre, especially romcoms which make us all giddy on the inside. Sure, the critics are not huge fans of Adam Sandler’s movies, but we as an audience have to agree that the films can be wholesome to watch!

Benny Safdie had “The Curse” fans wondering if he was in character at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards after his interview with IndieWire on the blue carpet.
Our interview opens with, “We wanted to ask–” but before we even got the question out, Safdie interjects, “What am I wearing?!” He then proceeds to break down his look.
“This is a Kapital jacket, Ralph Lauren pants, vintage. I got some shoes that I found somewhere else and some vintage rings. Winter Watch, and just some other pieces that I kind of find on my travels.”
Commenters on the video observed that he may have been in character to promote “The Curse” since it isn’t something the real Benny Safdie would usually wear or say. However, his sleazy character Dougie Schecter would be more than happy to report on his vintage-thrifted garb.

While most people conceive Adam Sandler as the comedy star who excels in slapstick comedies and hilarious rom-coms, his dramatic chops as an actor often go underappreciated. Time and time again, The Meyerowitz Stories Star has put his dramatic chops on full display, with his most notable work being 2019’s Uncut Gems, which many argued should’ve earned Sandler an Oscar nod.
Since then, the actor has continued to take on more dramatic roles, with his recent release being Spaceman, which brought in a whole new challenge for the Hustle Star that pushed his boundaries.

Uncut Gems is widely considered a revival movie for Adam Sandler who was struggling with critically panned films. The Safdie brothers, Josh and Benny, directed the anxiety-inducing thriller after their earlier critically acclaimed movie, Good Time. The brothers have since had a fallout and Josh Safdie has been struggling to land a movie while Benny Safdie’s career is thriving. According to reports, Josh has turned to Sandler to save his rocky career.

Adam Sandler will reunite with Uncut Gems co-director Josh Safdie for a new comedy special set to air on Netflix.
Unfortunately, at this time, there are no more details — such as a title, production timeline, or even premiere date — beyond everything contained in the aforementioned sentence. As such, we’ll all just have to sit here, stewing like Kevin Garnett after gazing upon the mysterious black opal for the first time: “Why the fuck would you show me something if I couldn’t have it?!”

Adam Sandler has set a new comedy special at Netflix — this time directed by Josh Safdie.
The project continues Sandler’s string of collaborations with Safie, who co-directed him in 2019’s “Uncut Gems” alongside his brother Benny Safdie. Sandler also starred in the brothers’ 2020 short film “Goldman v. Silverman” and is set to lead an upcoming feature set in the world of sports memorabilia to be directed by Josh and produced by Benny, though the latter told Variety in January that the film was “on pause.”
Currently untitled, the special will be Sandler’s second at Netflix, following up on his 2018 set “100% Fresh” — which went on to receive a 90% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sandler has worked on numerous projects for Netflix: In 2023, he led the voice cast of the streamer’s animated musical comedy film “Leo” and starred opposite Idina Menzel in “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah,...

In this uncertain world, one thing remains very clear when it comes to the filmmaking duo of the Safdie Brothers and their ongoing collaboration with Adam Sandler. While the filmmakers Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, who directed Sandler in the film “Uncut Gems,” have parted ways to direct their own solo movies, their friendship and collaboration with the Sandman remains strong.
While the upcoming Josh Safdie film starring Adam Sandler, said to be set in the world of 1990s baseball card trading and memorabilia, may be in doubt—Safdie may have lost his window to shoot Sandler in the feature to do the 2023 SAG/AFTRA and WGA strikes—their bond remains solid.

While the “SNL” alum and Happy Madison mega-producer is set to star in the Safdie Brothers’ upcoming untitled sports memorabilia Netflix movie, Josh Safdie will direct Sandler in a stand-up comedy special for the streamer. The as-yet untitled special will be Sandler’s second for Netflix after his 2018 Emmy-nominated “100% Fresh.”
Sandler’s Netflix deal, which has been extended twice, produced films like “Leo,” “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah,” “Hustle,” and two “Murder Mystery” movies. Sandler also stars in “Spaceman” alongside Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano; the feature will be released on Netflix March 1.
The Safdie Brothers have marked a creative split as of late, with Benny Safdie co-writing the Sandler-fronted sports movie but stepping away as co-director. Josh Safdie will solo direct.

Lilly Wachowski is officially making her solo feature directorial debut after sister Lana Wachowski helmed “The Matrix Resurrections.”
As confirmed to Collider, Lilly will direct upcoming queer dramedy “Trash Mountain,” with lead actor Caleb Hearon penning the script. Colin Trevorrow has signed on as a producer, along with Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev at Sight Unseen.

Adam Sandler is questioning his life’s purpose in space with Netflix’s romance drama “Spaceman.”
Sandler, who has an overall Happy Madison production deal with the streaming platform, leads the upcoming feature from “Chernobyl” director Johan Renck. Based on the novel “Spaceman of Bohemia,” the film follows an astronaut (Sandler) who worries that his tenuous marriage may be on the brink of collapse while he’s in space.
Colby Day adapted the novel for the screen, with Channing Tatum and producing partner Reid Carolin behind the upcoming film, along with fellow producers Peter Kiernan, Michael Parets, Tim Headington, Lia Buman, and Max Silva. Director Renck, Ben Ormand, and Barry Bernardi executive produce.
The official synopsis reads: “Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth.

February––particularly its third week––is all about romance. Accordingly the Criterion Channel got creative with their monthly programming and, in a few weeks, will debut Interdimensional Romance, a series of films wherein “passion conquers time and space, age and memory, and even death and the afterlife.” For every title you might’ve guessed there’s a wilder companion: Alan Rudolph’s Made In Heaven, Soderbergh’s remake, and Resnais’ Love Unto Death. Mostly I’m excited to revisit Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth, a likely essential viewing before Megalopolis.
February also marks Black History Month, and Criterion’s series will include work by Shirley Clarke (also subject of a standalone series), Garrett Bradley, Cheryl Dunye, and Julie Dash, while movies by Sirk, Minnelli, King Vidor, and Lang play in “Gothic Noir.” Greta Gerwig gets an “Adventures in Moviegoing” and can be seen in Mary Bronstein’s Yeast,...

The film world is mourning the dissolution of one of indie cinema’s most fascinating auteurist pairs, Benny and Josh Safdie, colloquially known as the Safdie Brothers (“Uncut Gems”). It may be more of a break than a break up, but for the time being, the “Good Time” guys are going solo.
“It’s a natural progression of what we each want to explore,” Benny Safdie recently told Variety of the split from his brother, dispelling rumors that the breakup was anything but brotherly. “I will direct on my own, and I will explore things that I want to explore. I want that freedom right now in my life.”
He’s left the door open for a reunion; perhaps it will come on the Safdies’ (the duo) previously announced project with Adam Sandler and Megan Thee Stallion. It’s not dead, Benny said, just “on pause.”

Who was it who said ‘never tell me the odds’? And was it uttered in some distant galaxy’s asteroid hail, or just the butt of a colonoscopy joke? The great gambol of Uncut Gems (2019) lay in its play around predetermined outcomes: how could the Celtics lose? How did you think this would end? The Safdie Brothers saw in sporting spectacle an elementally stressful catharsis: no matter who wins, someone loses. Accept the mystery or obsess over it—some things are set in stones.

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

After the release of “Uncut Gems,” the idea of Adam Sandler reteaming with the Safdie Brothers was something people became very, very excited about. And then, it seemed as if our prayers were answered, as it was reported that Sandler and the Safdies, particularly Josh Safdie, were going to work together on a brand-new film. Adam Sandler is giving away a few more details about his upcoming “Uncut Gems” reunion with the Safdie Bros.
Sandler is set to star in the yet-untitled Netflix film co-written by the Safdie Bros. Josh Safdie will be solo directing the film which is set in the world of sports memorabilia. Megan Thee Stallion co-stars.
Happy Gilmore production Sandler, who has an overall production deal with streamer Netflix, told Collider that he is unsure when the film will go into production as it is dependent on the baseball season.
“We’re not sure right now. We kind of missed the opportunity of baseball season because of the strike,” Sandler said, citing the SAG-AFTRA strike that recently was resolved after more than 118 days of picketing. “A lot of it was gonna be shot during live baseball. So it’s gonna take a minute. We’re figuring it all out right now.

The true pleasure of watching a filmmaker’s favorites is spotting influence. Artists, for all their daring and transgression, can only go so far escaping this, and if you find the exact right title it’s like watching them being born in the corner of the frame. (Speaking metaphorically.) It might take only this 75-second clip from The Gods of Times Square to find Josh Safdie’s sensibility––when, nine seconds in, we meet a “Jew for Jesus” who’d been “grafted in by the Holy Spirit” that oh-my-God-where-could-they-have-found-this-person sensation I get from Heaven Knows What, Good Time, and Uncut Gems kicked in, except here it’s scarier for being all too real.
We’re proud to debut said clip––courtesy Safdie’s Elara Pictures outfit and Jake Perlin’s The Film Desk––as Richard Sandler’s 1999 documentary begins a week-long run at New York’s Roxy Cinema. You can find it below,...

After 118 days of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the AMPTP finally wised up and struck a deal for the industry to get back to work. With the 2023 TV/Theatrical Contract tentative agreement now approved by the SAG-AFTRA National Board with an 86% majority, voting will kick off tomorrow and last through December for all 160,000 SAG-AFTRA members to weigh on the agreement. As anticipated works from Clint Eastwood, Ridley Scott, and John Woo get back into production, while hopefully others from Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, and Josh Safdie will receive updates soon, SAG-AFTRA has now released the 18-page tentative agreement detailing all of their wins.
Before we get to that, however, here’s a summary in their own words:
The agreement includes an unprecedented wage pattern with two wage increases in the first year of the contract – 7% upon ratification, and another 4% increase effective July 2024, making a compounded first year increase of 11.28%. There will...
