[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Sugar Season 1 Episode 5 “Boy in the Corner.”] Heading into the second half of the season, Sugar begins to reveal some details about the case that has the titular private investigator (Colin Farrell) hooked. Sugar was hired by Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell) to look into his granddaughter Olivia’s disappearance. And the investigation leads the Pi to none other than her half-brother, Davy (Nathan Corddry), after he told psychopath Stallings (Eric Lange) that she knew about the accusations leveled against him by women. During his investigation, Sugar’s become embedded into the Siegel family and learning their motivations and what’s happened to Olivia as well as what they’re covering up (including what Davy did), explains executive producer Audrey Chon. “It’s all tied together in this secret of lies that Sugar’s uncovering throughout the season,” she teases. It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

Before his mid-career upswing — starting either with “The Lobster” or “The Beguiled” and running through recent scorchers like “After Yang” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” — it’s worth remembering that Colin Farrell used to make bad movies, too. Now, his hot streak includes an Oscar nomination and a successful blockbuster franchise (soon with its own TV spinoff), but back then, for every “New World” and “In Bruges,” there was a “London Boulevard” and “Dead Man Down.” “Disappointing” may be a better descriptor of his star-forming era, with the “Total Recall” and “Fright Night” reboots, as well as earlier flops like “Alexander,” “The Recruit,” and “S.W.A.T.” But no matter how you remember them (if you remember them), Farrell’s early career offered uncertain quality. Of course, TV fans needn’t be reminded that Farrell’s charming Irish talents have gone to waste in projects unworthy of his efforts. We shan’t...

Hard though it may be to believe, there are just two episodes left in the HBO series "Barry," which used to lean more heavily on the comic side of things even amidst its dark setup. Now, though, it's pretty much all in on darkness. And with "a nice meal," the title belies a similar sense of grimness. Last week left off on quite the cliffhanger: Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) had come very close to his mission of returning to Los Angeles and killing his old acting teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) for potentially consulting on a biopic of his life, before being captured by Jim Moss (Robert Wisdom) and brought to his garage, where we know weaker men have barely withstood the terror of this grieving father/ex-cop. Oh, and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) is being beset upon by a mix of hallucinations and angry ex-co-workers as she fails to tend...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 7, “A Nice Meal.”]
For all the shows that “Barry” shares DNA with — crime dramas, black comedies, metaphysical treatises on morality — as the end nears, it’s easiest to see “Barry” as basically a more dangerous version of “The Other Two.” Hollywood satire, over-confident narcissists plummeting to depths of their own digging, relationships shredded in a heartbeat. Add a few extra corpses to the Dubek family’s peaks and valleys and you get something roughly approximating where “Barry” finds itself now: desperation, death, and jokes.
Writer Liz Sarnoff has long been helping “Barry” deliver some hard truths and difficult fates in second-to-last episodes of seasons (much like George Pelecanos did for “The Wire”). Here, she returns for “A Nice Meal,” a fourth and final Episode 7 to put a bow on these time jump transformations — not to show that all these characters are necessarily right back where they started, but that each of them has...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains light spoilers for the first four episodes of “High School,” now streaming on Amazon Freevee.
When Clea DuVall first met the Canadian indie musicians Tegan and Sara Quin years ago, “I was not familiar with their music,” she recalled in an interview this week. Nonetheless, after DuVall — a prolific actor in movies such as “But I’m a Cheerleader” and “Argo” — was introduced to the duo when she joined some friends who were seeing them perform, the three women eventually all became good friends “through being in the same circles.” As DuVall began to explore directing, the first things she ever did were promotional videos for Tegan and Sara’s “Heartthrob” record, released in early 2013. Since then, she’s collaborated with them a number of times: Among other things. Sara Quin scored DuVall’s 2016 feature debut as a writer-director “The Intervention,” and Tegan and Sara wrote...

The first four episodes of High School will premiere Oct. 14, with new episodes available every Friday on Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV).

Let’s get this out of the way now: The comparisons “Paper Girls” will get to “Stranger Things” are inevitable, but not especially fair.
Yes, “Paper Girls” also opens in the 1980s with four 12-year-olds on bikes who end up tackling otherworldly forces way bigger than themselves. But by the middle of the first episode, “Paper Girls” — which was a comic book series before “Stranger Things” was a TV show, anyway — turns itself inside out to become something else entirely. Suddenly, what at first looked like yet another throwback Amblin-esque series reveals a more bittersweet lens, and harder science fiction heart.
As written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang (both executive producers on this show), the original “Paper Girls” comics developed a devoted fanbase thanks to its sharp characterization, unsparing twists, and Chiang’s angular imagery rendered in fluorescent pinks and blues by colorist Matt Wilson. The Amazon adaptation,...

The main thing working against Paper Girls — Amazon’s mostly excellent TV adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s multiple Eisner-winning Image Comics series — is Stranger Things. Seeing how both chronicle the adventures of 1980s pre-teens who are unwittingly thrust into supernatural conflicts in which the fate of humanity is at stake, some comparisons are bound to arise. This, combined with the fact that Stranger Things is the hugest thing in genre television in recent memory, means that the negative/most vocal aspects of fandom are right now sharpening their Demogorgon-esque claws to dismiss Paper Girls as a derivative rip-off of the blockbuster series.
Not only would this be wrong but wholly inaccurate, as Paper Girls (the comic of which actually pre-dates the Netflix juggernaut by a year) is its own original entity that shares only the most surface and fleeting...

If adaptations of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic books didn’t have terrible luck with timing, they’d have no luck at all.
Vaughan has co-created some of the most acclaimed, beloved comics of this century, but they have tended to involve such elaborate concepts and dense storytelling that they’ve taken an incredibly long time to journey from page to screen. As a result, they’ve arrived in other media at the worst possible moments. Runaways, about the rebellious teenage children of a group of supervillains, debuted on Hulu...

Prime Video‘s Paper Girls is sending viewers to the ’80s and back as it tells the story of four girls who find themselves caught in the middle of warring time-travelers. In anticipation of the show’s July 29 premiere on the streamer, stars Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, Sofia Rosinsky, Fina Strazza, Adina Porter, and Nate Corddry visited the TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine studio, sponsored by Hollywood unBranded, at San Diego Comic-Con, to talk all things Paper Girls. Sitting down with Damian Holbrook, the stars opened up about their roles and reflected on the ’80s setting of the series. The titular paper girls Erin (Nelet), Mac (Rosinsky), Tiffany (Jones), and Kj (Starzza) find themselves transported through time in the early morning hours following Halloween in 1988 as they land in the future. (Credit: Prime Video) There, the girls must find a way home and also come face-to-face with the grown-up versions of themselves.
