The lawsuit that could significantly impact the past and future of reggaeton music will proceed to trial as a judge denied the majority of motions to dismiss the legal action involving the oft-sampled 1989 track “Fish Market.”
The massive case, which consolidates more than 50 related lawsuits filed over the last two years, alleges Jamaican producers Steely & Clevie’s 1989 hit “Fish Market” originated the distinctive dembow rhythm — named after Shabba Ranks’ 1990 single “Dem Bow,” which used the “Fish Market” riddim” — that’s become a signature of reggaeton music.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s hit “Despacito” was without a doubt the biggest song of the year in 2017, and it only got bigger when Justin Bieber hopped on a remix.
However, had things gone differently, it might have been Ariana Grande hopping on the chart-topper.
During a recent interview, Luis opened up about how the major remix came together and recalled his first attempts to get the “thank u, next” hitmaker involved.
Keep reading to find out more…
While on The Interview with Yordi Rosado podcast, Luis explained that Justin had heard “Despacito” while on tour and was interested in hopping on it.
According to a translation provided by Google, Justin reached out to his then-manager Scooter Braun. Interestingly, he was already familiar with the song.

Have you ever looked at Donald Trump and pictured him getting down to “Despacito”? Popping his geriatric kneecaps to “God’s Plan”? Well, the Republican National Committee has. The RNC featured both songs in the first installment of a playlist series aimed at generating hype around its 2024 nominating convention, which will take place in Milwaukee this July and crown Trump as the party’s official presidential nominee.
Notably, the playlist features few pro-Trump artists — and none of the cringe-inducing Maga rappers who’ve gone viral debasing themselves in the former president’s name.

When I first learned that Bad Bunny's sold-out Most Wanted Tour included three back-to-back shows at the Barclays Center in NYC and one that landed on my birthday, April 11, it all seemed meant to be. The concert would occur three days after a highly anticipated solar eclipse, a new moon, and all during a Mercury retrograde. It would also happen during Aries season - the beginning of the astrological year and a time for new beginnings. While I had high expectations for Benito's performance and his first NYC show from the tour, one thing that stood out most is how the Puerto Rican artist continues to appreciate and celebrate his loyal Latine fans.
Bad Bunny is the most-streamed artist on the planet. This fun fact never loses its significance for loyal Latine fans who have witnessed the struggle for Latin music to get the respect and support it deserves here in the States.

When Bad Bunny dropped his first-ever album X100PRE, it spread through the internet like good gossip. It was Christmas Eve in 2018, the same year that Bad Bunny had exploded as a global megastar — appearing on The Tonight Show and singing during Alesso’s set at Tomorrowland — despite being an independent artist with no full-length project under his belt. What he did have was nearly hundreds of successful trap hits and a following he had named “La Nueva Religión,” which would go on to make him the most listened to...

A federal judge voiced concern Friday that a sprawling copyright infringement lawsuit against reggaeton superstar Bad Bunny — and more than a hundred other artists including Karol G, Pitbull, Anitta, Drake, and Daddy Yankee — could put a chokehold on the “creativity” of an entire genre of music.
Still, U.S. District Judge Andre Birotte Jr. declined to issue an immediate ruling after hearing nearly two hours of argument over a defense motion to dismiss the high-profile case filed by lawyers for the Jamaican group Steely & Clevie.

Well before it even dropped, Netflix's new show "Neon" found itself embroiled in a bit of controversy. After all, how could a show that follows the trials and tribulations of a young reggaetonero on his path to fame allegedly not include Puerto Rican voices in its conception when the island - along with Panama - helped to pioneer the genre and take it to new heights? Well, after a few course corrections and the participation of reggaeton leyenda Daddy Yankee himself, "Neon" is finally available to stream. And while the criticism about the reported lack of Puerto Rican participation was warranted, it doesn't tell the whole story of what the show's trying to achieve in the first place.
You see, "Neon" isn't a story about the perreo born in Puerto Rico. Nor is it a story about the reggae en Español produced by Panama. It is a story about the global,...

On Entourage, the central tension always involved the question of whether Vince was gonna do the movie. Only there was never really any tension, because of course Vince was gonna do the movie — or, if he didn’t, things would in some other way work out just fine for him, E, Turtle, and even Johnny Drama. Yet for a show with no real stakes and only a modest level of humor (especially if you weren’t amused by Ari screaming actionable insults at Lloyd), it ran for eight seasons. And a movie!

By now, the beats of an aspiring-musician saga are as familiar as those of a fairy tale. There’s the hungry young artist who seems marked for stardom long before the rest of the world has caught on. There’s the crappy starter apartment, and the glitzy industry parties, and the boardroom meetings with labels who don’t quite get it. There’s the moment when the hero hears his own song on the radio, and the moment when he caves to the temptations of fame, and the moment he’s made to decide to be true to himself.
Sometimes, in the darker iterations of this story, there’s also the spectacular crash after the meteoric rise; in the more thoughtful or incisive versions, there might be conversations about the limitations of his art or the compromises it demands or its impact on the world. But Neon is not that tale.

Are you ready for your next TV obsession?
Neon, Netflix's highly-anticipated reggaeton comedy-drama, premieres Thursday, October 19, 2023.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at a clip from one of the freshman season's most pivotal episodes.
In the clip, we see Isa, an A-list Latin pop star who gathers her friends for a trip to her exclusive tropical island getaway.
In perhaps a nod to the rich and famous, our three leads get out of their car to escape to the private jet for a luxury holiday.
They have a pre-conceived expectation of what's about to go down, but the truth is, they couldn't be more wrong.
Isa, played by the Umbrella Academy's Genesis Rodriguez, tells them this isn't like the getaways other celebrities can give them.
How?
We're not giving it all away here because we want you to be at least a little surprised when you watch the TV clip below.

Last month, Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro put out a call to the public, asking people to send ideas for music by Latin artists to submit to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. It’s part of a years-long effort on Castro’s part to get more Latin art preserved within the Library of Congress and to increase Latino representation across media and pop culture.
The National Recording Registry is made up of works considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” or that “inform or reflect life in the United States.

This article contains spoilers for the Oct. 3 episode of “Dancing With the Stars.”
Latin Night saw a lot of missteps on “Dancing With the Stars,” but also some very sexy Sambas, Salsas and Rumbas. Actress Xochitl Gomez and singer Jason Mraz tied at the top of the leaderboard with 24 points each.
Marvel star Xochitl joked that with a name like hers, people would expect she was “born knowing how to Salsa,” but that it wasn’t true. “Salsa is your superpower,” said judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who compared her to Egot singer, actress and dancer Rita Moreno. Derek Gough gushed, “Your spins are out of control,” calling her performance “exceptional,” while Bruno Tonioli proclaimed it “superb.”
Singer Jason Mraz, a surprise breakout dance star in Week 1, had the last dance of the evening, a romantic Rumba with Daniella Karagach. Derek raved, “You nailed it.”

The hustle isn’t easy, but three friends are committed to doing it together in Netflix’s new Daddy Yankee-produced series, Neon.
The streamer released the trailer for the upcoming music comedy on Tuesday, which is set to feature a number of cameo appearances including Brray, Jon Z, Lyanno, Jowell, Ken-y, Jota Rosa, Villano Antillano and Daddy Yankee.
The series follows Tyler Dean Flores as Santi, a rising reggaeton artist who, alongside some old friends — Ness (Emma Ferreira) and Felix (Jordan Mendoza) — from small town Florida, and a brand new one, A&r rep Mia (Courtney Taylor), attempts to leave his mark on the Miami music scene.
The eight-episode comedy is a look at the hilarious and sometimes even harrowing realities of trying to make your dreams come true — whether it’s being the biggest star in reggaeton, a music manager, or a music video director — in the music industry.

Karol G is at the best moment in her career. Amid dropping the history-making album "Mañana Será Bonito" and selling out stadiums across the United States, the Colombian superstar will receive a special honor at the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards: the Spirit of Hope Award award, which recognizes an artist's humanitarian and philanthropic work.
Before becoming Karol G, she was born Carolina Giraldo Navarro in Medellín, Colombia. Her journey to becoming one of today's top Latina pop stars was many years in the making. Karol G came up alongside two guys from her city, J Balvin and Maluma, though her ascent wasn't as quick as theirs. Karol G's tenacity to make it as a woman in a men-dominated reggaetón scene eventually led to her debut album, the aptly titled "Unstoppable," in 2017.

And Santi means what he says, as he and his two friends Ness (Emma Ferreira) and Felix set their sights on South Florida to pursue their dreams of putting Santi on the map as a Reggaeton artist in the music industry — even it means preparing for the biggest meeting of their lives inside a gas station bathroom or living in a 2009 Toyota Corolla.

When the Latin Grammys announced its nominees last week, the corridos tumbados of Rancho Humilde’s top acts were notably missing from its list. Not a single project from the likes of Fuerza Régida, Natanael Cano, or Junior H made the cut.

But heads turned when Sza’s name was missing from the artist of the year category after the star launched one of the year’s top albums with Sos, both a critical and commercial success.

There were many significant Latino artists who shaped the soundtrack of Congressman Joaquin Castro’s childhood when he was growing up in San Antonio, Texas. As a kid, his mother loved Joan Baez; Castro remembers that she would play the folk singer’s 1975 Diamonds and Rust album over and over around the house. He also recalls liking a lot of the Tex-Mex fusion sounds pioneered by the Texas Tornados and Freddy Fender, and he’d even listen to Ricky Martin’s late Nineties pop songs once in a while.
