- With wrenches in his hand, a character chases after a woman to tighten the "bolts" (buttons) that are strategically placed on the front of her jacket on her breasts. This is played for laughs, and nothing actually happens except for chasing.

- Some very basic slapstick violence (falling over, things falling on people, etc)
- In the first factory sequence, a character, suffering from a nervous breakdown, starts dancing around like a looney ballet dancer squirting oil into people's faces, recklessly pulling levers and otherwise throwing the factory into chaos.
- In a jail, a prisoner takes a revolver from one of the guards and shoots at people, but no one is killed. Chaplan subdues him.
- A man on the streets is shot to death durring a riot.

- Chaplin smokes cigarettes and cigars on several occasions. He is accidentally intoxicated when a cask of rum is punctured with bullets, spraying him with liquor. He also has an accidental run-in with "nose powder" (cocaine) smuggled in by a fellow prisoner, who hides it in a salt shaker. Chaplin unknowingly sprinkles the "salt" all over his food, making him a bit tipsy or high.
