When Todd Howard, the mastermind behind Bethesda’s greatest hits, set out to create Starfield, he had a vision – steer clear of the usual sci-fi clichés.
In an interview, he explained how he wanted Starfield to stand apart from the polished, futuristic aesthetic typical of many sci-fi franchises, particularly Star Trek. Howard aimed to build a universe that felt lived-in and practical, very different from the sleek, pristine environments often seen in space operas.
The Difference Between Fallout and Starfield’s Aesthetic
Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion launches later this year.
Fallout is a goldmine of sci-fi tropes. Mutants roam the wasteland, survivors are camped up in underground vaults, and resources are very scarce. These elements create a gritty, harsh world that’s both captivating and familiar to fans of the genre. When it comes to the realm of open-world games, few studios compete against a mammoth like Bethesda. The makers of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the Fallout games went through several concepts and brainstorming sessions before coming up with industry-shaking ideas.
However, Bethesda’s executive producer, Todd Howard, has never been silent about these processes. With an all-too-familiar charm and transparency, he has spoken about how a game as large as Skyrim can often distract players from the main quest, just like a creative process that may distract developers from building a finished product.
Like Skyrim, Bethesda’s Games Distract Everyone Including the Devs Skyrim can be charmingly distracting, and the devs were well aware of this.

The Peabody Awards made its long-overdue Los Angeles debut at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday.
Hosted by Kumail Nanjiani, the 84th annual awards ceremony recognized Mel Brooks, Quinta Brunson, Star Trek and more storytellers for its first time on the West Coast since it launched in 1940.
Brooks received the Career Achievement Award for breaking “ground through his use of comedy as a form of resistance” throughout his storied career, according to Peabody.
Brunson was honored with the Trailblazer Award for shining “a light on the challenges faced by public school teachers” through her ABC series Abbott Elementary, as well as opening “doors for the next generation of Black leaders in television.”
The Institutional Award went to Star Trek for the TV franchise’s “enduring dedication to storytelling that projects the best of humanity into the distant future” nearly 60 years after it first debuted.

Perhaps the most overlooked series in the "Star Trek" canon ("Short Treks" and "Very Short Treks" notwithstanding), "Star Trek: The Animated Series" may be accepted as the final two years in the U.S.S. Enterprise's five-year mission. "Star Trek: Tas" debuted on September 8, 1973, four years after the cancelation of "Star Trek," to reunite the original cast and writers to explore Starlfeet's adventures in a 30-minute, animated format. The animation was provided by Filmation, the studio that had previously overseen multiple Batman and Superman cartoons, Archie cartoons, "Gilligan's Island" spinoffs, and which would go on to produce the ultra-popular "Fat Albert," "The Groovy Goolies," "BraveStarr," and "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe." Filmation shows were popular among kids, but their animations tended to be stiff and inexpressive. The most prominent feature of "Star Trek: Tas" is how static it looks.

The mix of actors, showrunners, directors, costumers, production designers, composers, and VFX artists in attendance at IndieWire’s Consider This FYC event, produced in partnership with Paramount, reflected the unique blend of skillsets that have to come together to create a hit show. Artists from properties as varied as “Star Trek,” “Frasier,” and “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” to “Fellow Travelers,” “Colin from Accounts,” and “A Gentleman in Moscow” convened at The Grove in Los Angeles to discuss the painstaking process of delivering the most authentic possible shows to their audiences. And while no two stories were the same, everyone seemed to agree that great art happens at the intersection of extensive preparation and serendipitous timing. (Return to IndieWire for videos of the full panels later this week.)

In James DeMonaco's 2013 dystopian horror movie "The Purge," Ethan Hawke plays a wealthy seller of high-tech home security systems. He lives in a bourgeois neighborhood and all his rich neighbors have outfitted their homes with Hawke's wares. They plan on employing their security soon, as tonight is Purge Night. In the future of "The Purge," one night a year is designated to be law-free. American citizens are legally permitted to commit whatever wanton acts of assault, destruction, and murder they want, from sundown to sunrise. Having purged their hostility, the idea is that they'll go back to being upstanding citizens in the morning.
The premise is tantalizing, although the 2013 original takes place mostly inside the Hawke character's home, turning a fun idea into a pretty rote home invasion thriller. The film was made for a scant $3 million but would earn over $91 million, making it a runaway hit. To date,...

Theaters will live to fight another day. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) provided more than half of the gross this weekend, taking #1 with $56 million. That isn’t a record for the franchise (with previous films at lower ticket prices), but it is a critical victory for the industry at a time it desperately needs them.
Will Smith’s first wide release since his catastrophic Oscar behavior in 2022 represents a triumph for star power, franchise filmmaking, action titles, and titles that draw from minority audiences (over two thirds for the weekend were Black and Latino). Most of all, it was a vital sign that underperformance for highly touted summer films isn’t a given.
In the face of rising industry panic, an under-$40 million opening for “Ride or Die” (its 2020 predecessor opened to $62 million) could have ratched the doom and despair to toxic levels. Instead, it blew past tracking projections...

"Star Trek" and "scary" aren't words that are often associated with each other. After all, it's a sci-fi franchise that's more about philosophy than action. "Trek" focuses on optimism and exploration, in a world where humanity has finally put internecine conflicts aside because we realized we are only one speck of a larger universe.
On the edge of the final frontier, though, all types of stories are possible. "Star Trek: The Original Series" began with "The Man Trap," essentially a monster B-movie in space about a salt-vampire with the mouth of a lamprey. In season 2, the series concocted a whole Halloween special with "Catspaw," about two psychic aliens who have constructed a Gothic castle as a trap for the Enterprise crew.
In the 60-ish years "Star Trek" has existed, it has returned to horror regularly enough to call this a trend. As the omnipotent trickster Q (John de Lancie) warned...

Patrick Stewart and the Star Trek franchise are not too far from each other. He played the character of Jean Luc Picard for seven long seasons in Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994. Stewart then went on to feature in four more movies, and recently we also saw him return to the beloved role in the series, Star Trek: Picard, which ran for three more seasons from 2020 to 2023.

And as for Stewart, when he joined the show, he did not think the show would even last the first season. He was just taking a chance to “make some money” and “get a suntan.

Alexandros Avranas' 2018 film "Dark Crimes," starring Jim Carrey, was extrapolated from a true crime article published in the New Yorker in 2008. The article, post-modernly called "True Crime," was written by David Grann, and it told the story of a Polish novelist named Krystian Bala who murdered a small business owner named Dariusz Janiszewski in the year 2000. For three years, the police were unable to solve the case, and Bala seemed to have gotten away with it. Bala, perhaps feeling smug about his ability to evade detection for so long, decided to poke the bear a little bit. In 2003, he published a crime novel called "Amok," wherein he wrote a fictionalized version of the Janiszewski murder, including intimate details that only the killer could have known. Bala depicted his fictional self as a badass nihilist who loved quoting Nietzsche and didn't care about human laws, man. "Amok" was a big hit,...

Long ago, in the distant 1960s, screenwriter Gene Roddenberry came up with the sci- fi series Star Trek, a story about explorers plowing through space and encountering all kinds of civilizations. In his utopian future, intelligent races did not fight each other, but engaged in science and diplomacy.
Okay, sometimes they fought, but mostly they explored space in its infinite variety. The series captured the geek community so much that it gradually became a franchise, with many prequels, sequels, and alternate versions.
In 2017, the franchise returned to the serial formula with a prequel, Star Trek: Discovery. The first seasons focused on the war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingons, which ended before the events of the original series, but starting with the third season, the events are shifted to the next millennium, to the year 3188.

Nicholas Meyer's 1982 sci-fi flick "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" was the first major acting gig for Kirstie Alley. Up to that point, Alley had only appeared on the sci-fi sitcom "Quark" as well as a few game shows like "Match Game." Alley wasn't even wholly devoted to acting at that stage, treating it more like a side-hustle than a career. It wouldn't be until she started auditioning for "Star Trek II" that she decided to focus on acting exclusively.
The circumstances surrounding Alley's audition are rather tragic, sadly. In the middle of the process, her mom was killed in a car accident and her father was left seriously injured. She stayed next to her father's bedside and Paramount, rather surprisingly, let her take all the time she needed. She spoke to her comatose father every day, telling him all about how she wanted to be an actor now,...

In genre television series fandom, there isn't a more reliable argument starter than "What is the best episode of X show?" Devotees of "Star Trek" The Original Series will fight to their dying breath defending the likes of "The City on the Edge of Forever," "The Enemy Within," and "Amok Time". As for the original "The Twilight Zone," it could be "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet," "To Serve Man," or just about any other episode because the series had very few duds. And then, of course, there's "Airwolf." Where to start with "Airwolf?" The winning move is not to start, because we'll never stop!

As we reflect on the Star Trek franchise’s impressive run of nearly six decades, can we truly pinpoint the unsung heroes who have propelled us at warp speed from one generation to the next? Absolutely! The Star Trek canon has expanded to include a number of new TV series, a movie franchise, and other media since Gene Roddenberry created the universe in 1966.
While we are eternally grateful to prolific visionaries like Roddenberry, as well as second-wave pioneers like Rick Berman, Michael Piller, Jeri Taylor, and Brannon Braga, it was the quiet lifeline tossed by one man, Harve Bennett. Having said that, the late producer actually reignited the flame of the Star Trek franchise when it was about to flicker out.

Bennett’s pivotal role in producing four of the first six Star Trek films in the 1980s can’t be overstated.

The longer a franchise goes, its output often becomes less original, as studios tend to play it safe and stick to the formula that initially worked out for them. This is notable in many major mainstream Hollywood franchises, including Terminator, Fast & Furious, and now even the MCU, whose direction is finally set to change after several struggling outings.
However, Star Trek broke this trend with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the recent installment to the decades-long IP, which took some bold genre-swings, especially in season 2.

Storytelling has been a facet of social behavior since the days of fingerpainting on dimly lit cavern walls.
Hopefully, the grunting, scratching cave audience didn't bludgeon the artist to death with makeshift clubs when a bad story resulted.
Modern fans can get downright mean over aspects of their favorite series.
Sometimes, the showrunners acknowledge the outcry -- sometimes, they don't.
Netflix's The Witcher and Amazon Prime's Rings of Power are perfect examples of what happens when writers ignore the fans, with both seeing a drastic drop in viewership.
The Rings of Power ended the season with only a third of its original audience.
Then again, for every failure, there is a success story.
For the most part, Shogun stuck to the books and never had to face the wrath of the fans.

In most cases, ignoring haters is often the best way to deal with them, as engaging in any sort of dispute ends up feeding the trolls. But Star Trek icon Michael Dorn had a unique approach when it came to dealing with two haters at a convention.
Known for playing Worf in the Star Trek franchise, the actor is notable for making the most number of appearances throughout the IP’s decades-long history than any other actors. But despite being one of the most beloved characters from the franchise, like any other thing in media, Worf isn’t immune to haters, and Dorn once had the incredible opportunity to scare two of them.

James Bond has remained a fan-favorite franchise through the decades, surviving not only the Cold War era by preying on the ideas of Russian espionage and imminent nuclear war but also adapting to the modern world by reflecting the ways of the 21st-century spycraft through Daniel Craig’s 007. However, the IP always seemed to get one thing wrong regarding its ambitious plots – the necessity of finding relevance in the story.
Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies [Credit: Universal Pictures/Eon Productions]Despite the overarching missions and over-the-top villains, the spy franchise never failed to keep the audience thoroughly entertained throughout its runtime. But without a change in trajectory, Bond would have fallen victim to the age-old disease of mass disinterest incurred due to the repetition of a formulaic plot.
One writer, however, had an idea for a script that could have introduced a Bond film unlike any ever done before.

Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and, Brent Spiner worked alongside in the iconic 1987 series Star Trek: The Next Generation. With Stewart reprising his role of Jean-Luc Picard, and Spiner and Frakes portraying William T. Raker and Data/Lore respectively, the trio had their fair share of good time on the sets.

However, it wasn’t always a good time for the cast. While shooting the first season of the 1987 show, Sir Patrick Stewart apparently walked off the set because he was laughed at! Sharing the story in his memoir, Stewart revealed that all was in good nature and that he too had a lesson to learn from it.

Next year, Black Mirror will not-so-boldly go where it’s gone before. News recently broke that the seventh season of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian sci-fi anthology series, set to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2025, will include a sequel — more specifically, a return to the virtual final frontier of "USS Callister," a.k.a. the Star Trek-themed episode from Season 4.

In the "Star Trek: Discovery" episode "All Is Possible", Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) led a dangerous away mission with several Starfleet cadets. Although Tilly was still a little bashful, she carried herself well as a commanding officer, mostly because she was still hopeful and positive about what Starfleet Academy has to offer the future. It should be remembered that the U.S.S. Discovery had, at this point in the series, been thrown forward in time over nine centuries into a future where the Federation had shrunk to a tiny, secret organization, and Starfleet Academy barely existed anymore.
At the end of "All Is Possible," Tilly was offered a teaching position at the newly-regrown space college, and she accepted.
That was the last time we saw Starfleet Academy.
In March 2023, Paramount announced a new series called "Starfleet Academy," a show to be set at the Federation's most venerable college.

In our multimedia-filled landscape, long-running franchises dominate. Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, and many more started small without world conquering ambitions. Nowadays though, if every entry in your franchise doesn’t make more than the last one and you aren’t cracking a billion dollars at the box office? Your franchise is a colossal failure. Thus, each new entry in a franchise is handled with extreme oversight and planning, most of which consists of “how can we scientifically engineer this to make as much money as possible for our CEO?”

From 1969 to (almost) the present, here’s a look back at every Star Trek finale to date. It’s fair to say the quality has varied over the years…
After seven years – making it the longest-running Star Trek series on television – Star Trek: Discovery came to a (relatively inauspicious) conclusion with ‘Life, Itself’. The episode therefore now enters a small coterie of stories – that of the Star Trek series finale.
Some of the examples below were born naturally from a lengthy series run. Others emerged as the climactic element of seasons’ worth of storytelling. Still others are sudden or bizarre aberrations that resulted from an unexpected cancellation. What bracket ‘Life, Itself’ fits under, you can be the judge. What’s apparent with all of these episodes is how varied they are, and how broad the tapestry of Star Trek really is.
Let’s take a look back:

Alan Scarfe, the classically trained British Canadian actor known for his turns as bad guys in Double Impact and Lethal Weapon III and as Dr. Bradley Talmadge on the Upn sci-fi series Seven Days, has died. He was 77.
Scarfe died April 28 of colon cancer at his home in Longueuil, Quebec, his family announced.
Survivors include his son, actor Jonathan Scarfe (ER, Raising the Bar, Hell on Wheels, Van Helsing).
Born in England and raised in Vancouver, Scarfe portrayed the Romulans Tokath and Admiral Mendak on episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1991 and 1993 and was another alien, the powerful Magistrate Augris, on a 1995 installment of Star Trek: Voyager.
“Science fiction on film and television, especially if you are playing some kind of alien character with fantastic make-up, is great for actors with a strong stage background,” he said in a 2007 interview. “The productions need that kind of size and intensity of performance.

There are multiple offers on the table for Paramount, but the company’s three-headed ‘Office of the CEO’ has a plan if all the deals fall through.
Paramount Global is entering its seventh month of merger and acquisition discussions, and whether or not there is an end in sight remains a bit cloudy. In December, news first broke that the company had begun initial discussions with Warner Bros. Discovery about a potential combination of the two media conglomerates. Those talks came to naught, but more seriously interested parties have emerged to evaluate Paramount’s assets in the meantime. Earlier this week, the special committee established by Paramount to evaluate M&a opportunities approved a bid by Skydance Media and its owner David Ellison, but one of the company’s major shareholder has publicly expressed its disapproval of the deal. With all of the confusion over the company’s future, Paramount executives...

In 2022, Paramount announced that filming on the new Star Trek movie would begin at the end of that year, with all of the main actors expected to return to work. The last film in the series was released in 2016, and due to its poor box office performance, the franchise went on hiatus.
All the while, Paramount was trying to figure out what to do next. Among other things, the studio wanted to give Quentin Tarantino a chance to make his own R-rated Star Trek film. It never went into production, but details about the movie are still emerging.
Tarantino Expressed His Desire to Make a Star Trek Movie in 2015
In late 2015, Quentin Tarantino was asked if he would make a Star Wars movie. The director said that Star Trek was closer to his heart. In his opinion, many episodes of the classic TV series can easily be expanded to fit the length of the movie.

In the second season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Trekkies were introduced to a memorable minor character named Ensign Sonya Gomez, played by actress Lycia Naff. Ensign Gomez first appeared in "Q Who", the first episode to feature the Borg. She conversed briefly with Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) about how excited she was to be serving on the U.S.S. Enterprise-d before accidentally spilling her drink on Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart). Ensign Gomez appeared again in the following episode, "Samaritan Snare", the episode to first feature the Pakled. In a fun development, Lycia Naff would return to play Gomez in an episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" called "First First Contact" wherein she had risen to the rank of captain.
For a hot minute behind the scenes, Ensign Gomez was floated as a potential love interest for Geordi, and Naff was even told about a potential story...

You don't have to be a connoisseur of film and television history to keep up with the fascinating story of Firefly, which happened in 2003. Then Fox ordered a sci-fi adventure series from Joss Whedon in the spirit of Star Wars, Star Trek or Babylon 5.
The future director of The Avengers filmed a space opera combining science fiction and western, but for a number of reasons, not only did the network refuse to continue the popular show, but also wasn't too eager to show the finished 14 episodes.
The indignation of fans knew no bounds, but all the viewers and creators of Firefly managed to achieve was the shooting of the feature film Serenity, a cult in narrow circles, but not very successful at the box office space action movie.
Twenty years after the movie's release, talk of canceling Firefly still rages, especially since the show's actors are still closely associated with the show's characters.

It’s “Barbie” meets the Dark Universe.
Mattel, the toy company/studio behind last year’s mega-blockbuster “Barbie,” has teamed up with Universal Pictures and prolific screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman and his company Weed Road to develop “Monster High,” a live-action theatrical film based on a popular line of dolls.
Launched in 2010, the Monster High line consists of fashion dolls inspired by horror movies, monsters from folklore, and other bits of spooky pop culture, which have in turn inspired an animated web series, an animated TV series, video games, book series, and a live-action made-for-tv musical. Monster High is aimed at girls 7-14 who want something different from Barbie.
The cinematic world of “Monster High” is built around a high school in the town of New Salem attended by the children of famous monsters. The characters include Frankie Stein, daughter of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride; Dracula’s daughter Draculaura; and Clawdeen Wolf,...

In the vast Star Trek universe, people often hope and anticipate potential reunions of iconic characters. One such moment nearly came to fruition in a planned Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, where Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard was set to cross paths with none other than William Shatner’s Captain James T. Kirk.

Amandla Stenberg’s The Acolyte is the new addition to Disney’s Star Wars roster, which continues the House of Mouse’s formula to bank on small-screen releases since the debacle of The Rise of Skywalker. Moreover, following the mixed reception to the sequel trilogy, in recent years, fans have been warming up to the prequel trilogy, which was initially panned upon their release.
But while the public perception towards the prequels has changed over time, a majority still holds the original Star Wars trilogy at the top, and for good reason. However, Stenberg, who is not new to controversies, had a surprising answer when asked about her favorite entry in the franchise.

Even before the third and final season of "Star Trek: Picard" finished airing on Paramount+ in 2023, showrunner Terry Matalas was speaking openly about wanting to make a spinoff called "Star Trek: Legacy." The third season of "Picard" was far better than the previous two seasons, and Trekkies began to excitedly speculate about its continuation, constructing entire pitch packets in their minds.
The final episode of "Picard" saw the U.S.S. Titan-a rechristened as the Enterprise-G, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) serving as its captain. Raffi (Michelle Hurd), her ex-girlfriend, was her first officer, and Picard's son Jack (Ed Speleers) had been rushed through Starfleet Academy so that he could serve as an ensign. It seemed like the setting and premise for "Legacy" was firmly in place.

The Star Wars universe is one of the biggest ever with a rich tapestry of characters, planets, and stories. Just like the MCU or DC universe, Star Wars too has expanded to include several new stories, comic books, novels, and more. While fans of the franchise have pretty much considered everything canon of their own accord, George Lucas has had other ideas.

2023 saw quite a few masterpieces (even though the box office disasters were more), and Godzilla Minus One was one of them.
Besides the tremendous critical praise it has earned from global audiences and critics, the movie seems to have gotten on the good side of quite a few celebrities in Hollywood as well. One of these is the Star Trek actor, Simon Pegg.

This is because, on the one hand, while he greatly acknowledged the gem of a work that the film was, bringing about a new take on the Kaiju and its relationship with humans, he simultaneously also hinted that the MonsterVerse is “f—ing cultural appropriation.”

Science fiction cinema came of age in the 1950s, beginning an ascent out of the drive-in schlock market that culminated in the boldly experimental yet still commercially viable efforts of the 1960s. That fed directly into the next decade, with sci-fi in the 1970s taking on (for the most part) the same subversive attitude as most other movies made during that era.
But sci-fi movies also entered blockbuster territory in the ‘70s as demonstrated by the massive success of films like Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman: The Movie, Logan’s Run, and Alien. The studios realized that sci-fi could be a cash cow, and as the 1980s dawned, decided to ramp up their genre output, not to mention their budgets, with elaborate visual effects, bigger stars, and more action—even if some of the more cerebral concepts espoused in the earlier decades’ films took a bit of a back seat.

One of the most beloved characters of the show Star Trek: Voyager is The Doctor. Played by Robert Picardo, the character is depicted as an AI hologram who is in charge of medical emergencies aboard the USS Voyager. The character featured in all seven seasons of the show and was a fan-favorite throughout its run.
One of the running gags of the show was that The Doctor did not have a name. Many names were assigned to the character during the show but none of them were revealed to be his actual name. However, an early draft of an episode reportedly almost christened him as Doctor Smokes, but avoided it after rewrites.
