The manga industry has shown tremendous growth in recent decades, and it could not have been done without pioneering franchises such as Dragon Ball or Naruto. Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise, can be solely given major credit for carrying the love of manga out of Japan and spreading it over the globe with his works.
While it remains obvious that new mangakas will keep coming around as time goes on, Akira Toriyama in an interview published in the 50th Celebration Weekly Shōnen Jump Edition revealed his feelings towards the new and coming mangakas. He mentions roughly how they are primarily lacking a sense of originality in their works and need to step it up.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is coming out this year and fans waiting impatiently are coming up with several new theories. With Goku and Vegeta taking center stage in the game, this Reddit discussion was started by a fan wondering if the game will feature the compelling divine transformation of a Perfected Ultra Instinct, also known as the Mastered Ultra Instinct (Mui).
This state makes Goku the strongest he has ever been in the franchise and if Sparking Zero features this, this Reddit discussion has fans wondering if it will be a separate character. While many have commented on the post in agreement, some disagreed over having a separate character.

As the arrival of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero comes closer, fans can’t help but walk down memory lane and think of the days when Budokai Tenkaichi was just finding its home in the franchise’s history. Even though Sparking Zero holds its own unique name, the crux of all this lies in a fighting game that has established itself as an essential part of the Dragon Ball franchise.
Keeping this in mind, fans online have been sharing their own memories and recalling the first time they tried out the game. Even though the years have been kind and may have changed the game graphically and mechanically into what it is now, Budokai Tenkaichi’s roots are still visible at its core in the upcoming title.

Mortal Kombat 1 was one of the major fighting games to come last year. This new entry resets all the lore and makes Liu Kang a literal god. The history and the new cameo system were very good additions to the franchise. Now that he's no longer directing Avengers: Insert New Name Here(formerly The Kang Dynasty), Shang-Chi's Destin Daniel Cretton is instead adding something else to his schedule. He's now attached to make a live-action film based on the hugely popular Naruto manga.
Lionsgate has had this one in development since at least 2015, with Avi and Ari Arad on board to produce alongside Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves' Jeremy Latcham.
Naruto, in case it has somehow slipped your attention, was created by Masashi Kishimoto. The coming-of-age story focuses on enthusiastic young ninja Naruto Uzumaki who has ambitions to be the leader of his village, but must also deal with possessing the spirit of a nine-tailed demon fox. Who among us, etc, etc…
Originally serialized in print form via Japan's weekly title Shonen Jump between 1999 to 2014, it has become one of the biggest mangas, and has been adapted into a variety of animated series and movies.

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

The fusion technique in Dragon Ball has always been an interesting sequence to watch. As two characters combined, with the movements and poses of the Fusion Dance, a new fighter would emerge much to excitement of fans.
Despite its interesting premise, the Fusion Technique has just been viewed as a shonen power-up in general. But, for those who were actually scratching their heads over how characters like Goten and Trunks could fuse and end up becoming Gotenks, a cell engineering expert has finally come up with the answers.
Professor Naoki Wada is researching cell engineering at Tokushima University’s Graduate School of Technology, Industrial, and Social Sciences. He was the first person in the world to successfully achieve partial cell fusion between a human cell and a plant cell.
In a recently published interview with the official Dragon Ball website, Wada explained the possible mechanisms of how the Fusion Technique in Dragon Ball series works.

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
Horror and animation, particularly anime, don't tend to mix well. There are plenty of psychological thrillers, sure, but there are very few shows that don't just rely on shock and gore to create a horror atmosphere. That makes any show that at least creates an eerie vibe rather special. Shows like "Mononoke."
No, this is not connected to the Ghibli film with a similar title. And no, this isn't technically a scary show, but it manages to create a creepy atmosphere full of disturbing imagery. Plus, it's all about demons and other evil spirits, so it counts!
"Mononoke" was produced by Toei Animation, the studio behind iconic shows like "Dragon Ball, "Sailor Moon," and "One Piece." The 2007 anime is a spin-off of the horror anthology "Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales" and follows...

Toei Animation, the Japanese studio behind “Dragon Ball,” “Slam Dunk” and the “One Piece” cartoon franchises, is planning to open a European office in Italy. That may be followed by others in Latin America and India as well as a ramp up of its international production.

Even if you're only passingly familiar with manga and anime, I'd bet that you've heard of "Fullmetal Alchemist," a modern classic of both mediums. First authored by Hiromu Arakawa and adapted to animation twice, all versions follow the titular alchemist, Edward Elric, and his little brother Alphonse. Mutilated when they tried to revive their dead mother, they're now on a quest to get their bodies back by finding the Philosopher's Stone. Along the way, they face obstacles ranging from a military dictatorship to ouroboros-tattooed homunculi.
"Fullmetal Alchemist" is not my all-time favorite manga or anime, but it is my favorite Shōnen series. What is that? A Japanese term referring to boys' media. Think "Dragon Ball," "Naruto," or "One Piece." They all fit under this umbrella.
Many of these series are published by the same magazine, Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump, but not "Fullmetal Alchemist." If you've ever wondered why the...

A live-action adaptation of Oda Eiichirô’s manga One Piece sounds like a dicey proposition, especially with Netflix manning the ship. With decades worth of source material to draw from since the series began in 1997, a faithful adaptation would require a near-unthinkable number of seasons from the infamously cancel-happy streamer. Furthermore, compared to its Dragon Ball-inspired contemporaries, the material is unabashedly cartoonish, with much of the manga’s dialogue shouted by an enormous cast of characters with improbable abilities and bodily proportions. A true adaptation would be a more expensive, elaborate undertaking than Cowboy Bebop, which Netflix axed after a single season.
And yet, One Piece defies the odds by being faithful to its source while also standing on its own. Its first season covers a little more than 10 of 100-plus (and counting) manga volumes, making a small dent in the story of Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), the happy-go-lucky,...

"One Piece" is not just one of the most popular manga ever, but a total phenomenon, and one of the best works of modern fiction. Eiichiro Oda crafted a story with great thematic depth, one that explores subjects of imperialism, oppression, racism, slavery, and that's just scratching the surface. It also expands its world to become one of the most fleshed-out fictional landscapes ever. Each island and each character exude a rich history and mythology, which make for a fleshed-out saga with extensive lore.
What keeps it such an entertaining and not at all convoluted story is the fact that Oda has never lost track of the sense of childlike wonder, of adventure, or the goofy tone from the early days of the manga. Even at its darkest moments, when someone died or when we experienced huge battles against governments, "One Piece" always has moments of absurd and ludicrous humor that make you smile.

The climax of "Creed III" brings a whole new visual language to the series. As Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) and Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors) box for the title of world champion, we enter their shared headspace. The crowd disappears and the sounds of their cheering drop out, leaving just the two former friends to confront each other. The imagery becomes surreal: the borders of the ring become prison bars, reflecting Damian's bitterness about how much of his life was wasted in a cell. Throughout the fight, whenever one boxer lands a blow, the scene goes into slow motion emphasizing specific strikes.
The influence for this type of filmmaking is anime action scenes. Jordan, the star of this franchise and now its director too, is the king of the weebs. In an interview with Polygon, Jordan cited his favorite anime, "Naruto Shippuden," as the primary inspiration for the climax of "Creed III." After all,...

Out of nowhere, Bandai Namco decided to end the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour event with the surprise reveal of Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 4, and audiences are losing their collective minds. Some people are probably wondering what’s the big deal. Why develop a sequel for a series that hasn’t been touched in over a decade? Well, we might as well start from the beginning.
Just what is Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi? This series was the second premier Dragon Ball Z fighting game franchise. The first, Dragon Ball Z Budokai, was developed by Dimps (which most recently produced Dragon Ball: The Breakers) and was a 2.5D fighter that plays like a slower version of Dragon Ball FighterZ.
Budokai Tenkaichi, meanwhile, is a 3D fighter (think Naruto: Ultimate Ninja) developed by Spike (which eventually merged to form Spike Chunsoft and create the Danganronpa series). The Dragon Ball Z license notwithstanding,...

Anime fans are becoming increasingly savvy when it comes to the voice actors that are responsible for their favorite characters. It’s so touching to witness this symbiotic relationship play out where fans will follow voice actors to new series just as much as they’ll check out a new series because of its story or genre. Elizabeth Maxwell is a seasoned voice actor who can be heard in anime like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia as well as video games that include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Persona.

Buried on YouTube is a grainy video of a Japanese news broadcast. Even if you don’t speak Japanese, the footage is clear enough. It’s February 1988, and throngs of people are lining up for the new Famicom video game, Dragon Quest III. A man with a loudspeaker keeps one line orderly as it twines past trees and storefronts. Frantic shopgirls unbox dozens of copies. A nearby scramble crossing is jam-packed. It’s a video game launch so massive that it spawned a wild urban legend that used to pop up on old GameFAQs forums and schoolyards: The Japanese government had to step in and write a law mandating that future Dragon Quest games could only be released on the weekend to avoid civil disruption.
It turns out there’s no such law on the books. However, it is true that Enix was so concerned about the reports of school...

Whether you're a fan of anime or not, you've most likely heard of "Dragon Ball." The iconic series, created by Akira Toriyama, has helped define modern-day Shonen anime with creatively designed characters, worlds, and stories. The anime grew past its original conception as an action-comedy, eventually spanning two sequel series, with "Dragon Ball Z" becoming the most well-known of the many series made thus far. Consisting of five different shows with a total of 806 episodes and 20 movies, getting into this famous series can feel overwhelming. After all, there are multiple avenues to take to experience the story of Goku and the rest of the Z fighters.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (Netflix)
The proportions of his eponymous stop-motion character are gangly and childlike, in the words of Guillermo del Toro. “They lend themselves to these sort of haphazard rhythms of walking and running that are very endearing. In his apparent simplicity, is a very complex work of design keeping those few elements alive and on top with the raw wood that is simulating hair and branches, and the nails on his back are very expressive and unique and feel almost elemental.” Director Mark Gustafson points out that in the story, he’s carved by a drunken Geppetto making Pinocchio “very primitive in some ways, unfinished, naked, and exposed. That was what we needed for him to go out into the world with. He can’t hide anything. That’s the nature of innocence. You’re wearing it all on the outside and that’s what this character does.

Piccolo is just as ruthless as a hero as he was when he was a villain. There aren’t a lot of characters in fiction that anyone can say this about. There are always gray areas that exist and allow debate to blossom. But one thing that many Dragon Ball fans are clear about is the fact that Piccolo is even more dangerous as a hero. The character entered Dragon Ball as Demon King Piccolo, as many fans should remember. Strangely, this character wasn’t nearly as bad as the hero since Demon King Piccolo caused destruction and death. But the hero

Shōnen manga is Japan's equivalent to American superhero comics, but comes with a few more storytelling advantages. Manga is more creator-driven; instead of different writers and artists rotating shifts on staple characters like at Marvel and DC, mangakas (manga artists) pitch and create the stories for their publisher. While Shōnen manga is primarily comprised of boys' adventure books, they tend to feature different types of adventurers: Shōnen heroes can be pirates, hunters, shinigami, alchemists, or ninjas. Since manga doesn't use a "shared universe" model, the barrier to entry is a bit lower.
Manga doesn't experience the same stasis as American superhero comics. Even if chapters go up into the hundreds, there's a forward progression and, eventually, an ending. Take "Dragon Ball," the godfather of modern Shōnen manga created by Akira Toriyama. Son Gokū is introduced as a child, growing up over the manga's 194 chapters. The manga's rebrand, "Dragon Ball Z,...

2022 has been another big year for anime and manga in the United States. This fall's "Chainsaw Man" anime is earning rave reviews. "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" earned 32 million worldwide in its first week. Netflix's "Cyberpunk Edgerunners" convinced folks to give the messy "Cyberpunk 2077" another shot, rocketing the game up the Steam rankings. On the manga front, the blockbuster success of Junji Ito has led publishers to take chances on other horror artists like Kazuo Umezu and Kanako Inuki. There's even a fledgling indie manga movement in the United States, with small publishers like Glacier Bay Books and Star Fruit Books distributing titles that might never otherwise see the light of day. We're long past the time of executives chopping up anime series in the editing docket to be marketable to American children. Anime and manga are now respected in their own right, if only because it sells.

Dragon Ball was one of the most popular anime franchises when it launched and showed a child version of Goku. Still, while we may reference him as a child version of one of the most famous anime heroes, it was the first series, and Goku wasn’t referred to as such until the second series Dragon Ball Z depicted the character beyond his 20s, with his wife and kids. As popular as Dragon Ball was, Dragon Ball Z was exponentially more popular, and the intensity for the franchise has been in overdrive since the third iteration of the series, Dragon Ball

This was another rough weekend at the box office with the combined gross of all films clocking in at 57.7 million, which is down 15 from last weekend and ranks as the year’s eighth lowest grossing. It isn’t all bad news, though. The weekend saw some great holds and a solid opening, and the post-summer box office slump will come to an end next weekend when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever delivers what may be the year’s biggest opening, leading what could potentially be the year’s highest grossing weekend.
Until then, Black Adam continues to lead the way. The Dceu film starring Dwayne Johnson brought in another 18.5 million in its third weekend, holding well as it dropped 33, much improved from last weekend’s 59 decline. Sunday Am Writethru: after Saturday update, with chart: Before Disney/Marvel’s Wakanda Forever comes in and does 175M-200M next weekend, providing a complete rebirth to the domestic box office, don’t knock New Line’s Black Adam this weekend, which had a fantastic hold of -33 for a third weekend of 18.5M. Total running domestic cume stands at 137.4M.
Some rivals have snarked to me about the big cost for this movie at 200M before P&a, that Black Adam won’t profit like Johnson’s Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, which had the benefit of 200M out of Chinaand a better exchange rate, that film doing 759M WW and yielding an 84M net profit after all ancillaries. Black Adam will be lucky to top out at 400M WW. Again, Warners couldn’t have seen that strong dollar coming abroad.

In our predictions on Thursday we weren’t sure if Crunchyroll Studios release of One Piece Film: Red would have the power to take down Black Adam at this weekend’s box office. Well, early numbers are in and it appears Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam will remain the champ for another week as it posted around a 4 million Friday on its way to a projected 15 million weekend.
One Piece Film: Red is expected to land in second place with around 10 million. The animated film does not seem to be boasting the same numbers as the studios last effort: August’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero which opened in first place with over 20 million. As a person who isn’t into these animated films, I had at least heard of Dragon Ball, whereas I must admit I have absolutely no idea what this One Piece Film: Red is. After a red carpet parade lasting nearly two-hours, the opening ceremony for the 2022 Tokyo International Film Festival kicked off with a musical number performed by four women from the Takarazuka all-female theater troupe in black men’s suits. There is over 100 years of tradition behind Takarazuka-style performances, in which women play men’s roles. But if there was a metaphor for the changes wrought on the festival by two years of Covid disruptions or on Japanese entertainment by the beginnings of the #MeToo Movement, it was not clear what it was.
Rather the opening ceremony was making use of the Takarazuka Theater next door to the hyper-modern Hibiya Midtown complex which has been adopted by the festival since last year, after a move to Ginza and Hibiya from the Roppongi district.
After the Takarazuka, it was the turn of Japanese Prime Minister to give the proceedings some gravity. Still on a trip to Australia,...

"House of the Dragon" is quickly becoming the best George R. R. Martin adaptation yet, a show that embraces the best parts of "Game of Thrones" but does away with what didn't work there. Sure, we may lack some of the sense of urgency from "Game of Thrones" and its catchy "Winter Is Coming" tagline, but by taking what is essentially just a history book and filling in the gaps of the story, we're getting a faithful-yet-surprising and poignant-yet-entertaining tragedy about the fall of a family due to very stupid choices.
But the show is not all violence, boobs, and funerals. "House of the Dragon" is also unafraid to be outright weird. After all, this is the show that gave us the gift that was Craghas Drahar, aka the Crabfeeder (rest in peace, king) and his army of crabs that ate people. The most popular manga and anime in the United States hail from a Japanese magazine called Shonen Jump. Shonen Jump comics are often, but not always, long-running serial narratives about a young boy who wants to become the best at a hobby or occupation. To achieve this goal he must train long and hard, face off against rivals who inevitably become friends, and take on even greater challenges. Jump is a notoriously competitive magazine, and series that fail to hit it big immediately are either heavily reworked or canceled. Those that succeed run for dozens upon dozens of volumes, in some cases over one hundred. Which raises the question; how do you tell an effective serialized story that takes place over so many pages?
Jump comics utilize cliffhangers and breakneck pacing to keep the reader's interest, while adding and subtracting characters from the main cast based on frequent popularity polls.

In a summer that’s often seen only one new wide release in a weekend, a whopping three new films hit theaters on Friday: Sony’s horror-thriller “The Invitation,” George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” and bank heist movie “Breaking,” starring John Boyega. However, none of them seem to be making much of an impact, as the total box office projects a sum in the 50 million to 60 million range. That wouldn’t just be the worst weekend of the summer, but also the worst since February.
“The Invitation” is tracking ahead of the other two, as it looks to claim the weekend’s top spot with a meager 6 million to 7 million gross from 3,114 locations in its opening. Critics didn’t really care for the movie — it landed a 40 approval rating from review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes — and audiences were perhaps more unenthused. House of the Dragon has already been renewed for season 2 on HBO Max.
“House of the Dragon has only just begun, but the Targaryen civil war has already been extended. HBO has announced that the series, set about 200 years before the events seen in Game of Thrones, will receive a second season, possibly because everyone and their mother watched last Sunday’s series premiere.”

Speaking of House of the Dragon, some viewers believed the pilot episode should’ve had a trigger warning.

There's probably no doubt that "The Rehearsal" is one of the most intriguing HBO shows to have been released in a while. As the events of the show unraveled, it went from a fairly innocuous if not tedious experiment to something that challenges our preconceived notions of free will and choice. Nathan Fielder might be a madman for these experiments, but he also proved himself to be perhaps the most humanistic and thoughtful comedian currently working. He just happens to display these characteristics of his comedy in an unconventional way.
As thought-provoking as the show is, it can't be ignored that it is also objectively hilarious. A lot of this comedy came from the subjects that Fielder featured on the show, as well as from his natural reactions to what they say or do. This is a similar vein of comedy shown throughout "Nathan For You," but the key difference...

The full title of the film is Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which places it as a filmed adventure within the Dragon Ball Super continuity, with a title of Super Hero. If you're lost, don't worry, the film doesn't really feel the need to help you but you don't need it to either. Though there's plenty (I'm told) to reward existing fans, the film is an entertaining slice of ludicrously over-powered martial action with some broad comedy too.
There are some tremendous bits of character and production design. There's a floating limousine whose roofline has been altered to include a bubble for a prodigious quiff, said vehicle has an arm-rest Oreo-style cookie dispenser and a bobble-head of one of the other characters on the dash. There are plush toys too, a nod to the Dragon Ball franchise's success as a cross-media marketing platform. A fact hammered home by not one but.

Despite the presence of two big new wide release movies that were cut from wildly different cloths, it was yet another relatively quiet weekend at the box office. "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" arrived to give the anime crowd something to enjoy, while Idris Elba's "Beast" was going after the thriller crowd. However, it was anime that won the day, affirming that serving underserved audiences can indeed be a profitable endeavor. At the same time, it also proved that average moviegoers are downright starved for big movies right now and it's going to be a long couple of months until "Black Adam" arrives to bring the blockbuster crowds back out.

As someone born in 1994, Dragon Ball was one of the TV programs that accompanied me throughout my childhood, impacting my life – and that of many children and teenagers worldwide – in an unforgettable manner. No other television offerings came close to watching the epic adventures of Goku and the Z fighters. It's impossible to describe the tremendous happiness fans felt when Dragon Ball Super was announced as a continuation of the anime – a series that improved exponentially, arc after arc. Then came Dragon Ball Super: Broly in 2018 - by far the best movie in the franchise. Therefore, expectations were very high for the latest Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, so it hurts to write that I left unsatisfyingly unfulfilled. ›››

After five weekends in a row of box-office decline and a gloomy season ahead, this weekend saw a bit of an upswing, led by the latest entry in the hugely popular anime franchise Dragon Ball. The overall box office came in at 72.5 million, up 8.2 million from last weekend, and while this weekend sits among the lowest grossing in recent pre-pandemic years, it was still above expectations and may be the best weekend we see for the next eight weeks.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero came in first with a prediction-beating 20.1 million, more than doubling the opening of its predecessor Dragon Ball Super: Broly (9.8 million) in 2018. Super Hero’s opening is a frontloaded affair, with more than half of the gross coming from Thursday previews and Friday, but it’s hardly something to be let down by given the weekend numbers. The big story for this weekend will be that when you have a film with a niche audience you don’t need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing to get that audience to show up. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero easily landed in first place with an estimated 20.1 million, including 3.4 Million in IMAX tickets alone making it their highest grossing anime opening ever. This is a huge win for the animation studio Crunchyroll as it proves they are a studio that truly understands their audience. Of course these Dragon Ball films are generally front loaded with their fans rushing out to see it as soon as possible and generally have steep drop offs the following week with the previous film in the series – Dragon Ball Super: Broly- posting a nearly 70 decline in its second weekend. At any rate, it definitely wasn’t as much of a...

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero opened to an impressive 20.1 million-plus at the North American box office, easily enough to win the weekend. That number could climb higher once Sunday grosses are tallied.
Crunchyroll, which is distributing the Japanese movie in North America, says the sequel is scoring the best global opening ever for an anime film. Overseas, the film opened to 12 million from 32 markets, including 11.2 million from markets handled by Sony Pictures International.

In a rarity for the American box office, an anime movie is set to walk away from this weekend with the number one spot. "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" is projected to make 21 million by the end of the weekend, beating out competition including the weekend's only new release from a major studio, Universal's lion-fighting thriller "Beast."
The latest Dragon Ball movie has already surpassed expectations with a 10.7 million opening day, which dwarfs the last theatrically released film in the franchise. "Dragon Ball: Broly" premiered in 2019, and raked in just 9.8 million in its entire first weekend. If the film makes its projected gross this weekend, it'll be comparable to that of other recently successful anime films, including this spring's "Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie" (18 million), and "Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train," which opened during a pandemic economy with a 21 million debut weekend.
