The decade of the 1990s was fruitful for thrillers and mystery stories, including the ones that contain erotic elements too. The main director of this kind was David Lynch, who inscribed his name in history with the Twin Peaks fever sweeping over America.
However, there were other directors who tried to ride this hype train. Such an attempt was made in 1992, when the psychological thriller we’re going to talk about was released, and since then it gained such a cultish status it’s still discussed on Reddit.
Its plot revolves around Allison, a young woman who decides to separate from her fiancé and starts looking for a roommate. Eventually, she finds one, a femme fatale named Hedra, who seems to be incredibly interested in her neighbor's life.
However, when Allison starts thinking of reconciling with her boyfriend, Hedra grows jealous and even aggressive. The more we observe her changed behavior,...

The early ‘90s were a peculiar period in the ascendant career of young Nicole Kidman. Hot off her breakthrough in Dead Calm (1989), Hollywood poached her quickly, (mis)casting her in a series of prominent but mostly forgettable, largely thankless roles—from Days of Thunder (1990) and Billy Bathgate (1991) to Far and Away (1992) and My Life (1993). In between, her real claim to fame (for a time) was bagging Hollywood’s biggest star, not necessarily popping on screen. Or at least that’s how I viewed her in the fall of 1993, when the Harold Becker-directed, Aaron Sorkin-penned Malice was released in theaters…...

Steven Spielberg's filmmaking techniques took a large bound forward in 2001 with the release of "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." The sci-fi film, set in a near future populated by conscious androids, was a project Spielberg took over from an ailing Stanley Kubrick, who passed on it when he felt Spielberg could do it better. In "A.I.," Spielberg's photography and editing were very different from the slick, adventure films and glossy prestige pictures he had become popular making. Now everything was hazy, staid, more deliberate.
Although he had already won three Oscars (two for "Schindler's List" and one for "Saving Private Ryan") and was widely considered to be a reigning master of Hollywood's blockbuster class, Spielberg evolved. After 2001, Spielberg's career bifurcated into dispassionate effects-based thrillers wherein the filmmaker was merely experimenting, and deeply passionate political thrillers that used the politics of the past to reflect on issues of the day.

Apart from obvious thriller choices from the decade of the 1990s, which include Basic Instinct, Seven, Fight Club and Usual Suspects, there are some hidden nostalgic gems, which can immerse you in the atmosphere of tempting mystery and suspense.
Here are 5 of the chilling 1990’s thrillers, handpicked by Redditors and available for watching on Prime Video.
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992)
Being the perfect example of the femme fatale trope, this story transforms the typical dangerous woman into a suburban obstetrician’s wife, who goes into all serious after she acknowledges her husband’s sexual misconduct. Annabella Sciorra and Rebecca De Mornay’s performances here are the main keys for keeping the movie’s nail-biting suspense, and be sure that the twists will leave your jaws on the floor!

Keigo Higashino's oeuvre needs no introduction since he is one of the foremost writers of contemporary Japanese fiction. Crime fiction is a wide banner, especially in Japanese literature, but this writer has made a name for himself through page-turners involving complex characters and spiraling perplexities. I sailed through “A Death in Tokyo” (2022), a who-done-it thriller which is the third installment of the Detective Kaga series, preceded by “Malice” (2014), “Newcomer” (2018) and followed by “The Final Curtain” (2023).

Crime fiction authors face a unique challenge: they must unveil the story as perceived by its diverse characters. This task involves presenting the narrative through multiple viewpoints, each adding depth and complexity to the unfolding mystery. In a way, we stand side-by-side detective Kaga who goes about investigating the death of Takeaki Aoyagi, along with his associate Matsumiya. The...

Clipse rapper No Malice has thrown his hat into the ring of unpredictable musical team-ups, welcoming potential collaborations with the likes of Coldplay and The Killers.
Malice and Pusha T sat down with their manager Steven Victor in a recent interview with Goat, in which the duo revealed whom they’d like to collaborate with in the future.
“As far as hip-hop goes, the highwater mark is always collaborating with Jay-Z, so I would like that,” Malice began. “Outside of hip-hop, I would like to see Clipse with artists like Coldplay and The Killers, with big arena records, festivals, something that moves globally.”
King Push, however, feels a little differently, after seemingly reaching his collaboration limit. “Man. I don’t know. I’m collab’d out,” he said. “I don’t even care about collaborations if it’s not among a great body of work. I’m into cohesive, great bodies of work.

Naming horror movies is a serious business. It needs to sound scary, it shouldn’t give too much away, ideally it shouldn’t be named the same as someone else’s film, but it should also be memorable enough to stick in the brain. So unsurprisingly a lot of horror filmmakers have opted to call their movie “scary sounding adjective”.
But which word is scariest? We have ranked the movies based entirely on how alarming our perception of the adjective is. Come at us in the comments.
7. Ominous
Rain clouds can be ominous. Your boss saying “can I borrow you for a minute” can be ominous.
But to describe your child dying in an accident and a mysterious stranger offering to bring him back to life as “Ominous” feels like a bit of an understatement. That’s the plot of this film from 2015 by Peter Sullivan, which sounds like it...

Alec Baldwin just sort of happened all at once. For a long time, there were movies without Baldwin, and then suddenly, in 1988, there were five. He was an unfaithful slime of a husband in Jonathan Demme's "Married to the Mob," an unfaithful slime of a boyfriend in Mike Nichols "Working Girl," a creepy slime of a best friend in John Hughes' "She's Having a Baby," an ambitious slime of a radio executive in Oliver Stone's "Talk Radio" and an absolute gem of a dead man in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice."
Baldwin was immediately pegged as a character actor with leading man potential, and got his chance to prove his worth in 1990 as Jack Ryan in John McTiernan's adaptation of Tom Clancy's "The Hunt for Red October." Ryan is a brilliant CIA analyst who correctly deduces that legendary Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) has absconded...

In a deal which transforms a local project into an international production, Taiwan’s Tydal Productions has struck a co-production deal with the Czech Republic’s Lonely Production to make “Malice,” a potentially arresting high-sea thriller to be directed by Lungyin Lim.
Set up at Lungyin Lim’s Tydal Productions and Aview Images, both based in Taiwan, “Malice” is produced by Aview Images’s SheeHeng Kuek and Ivy Shen Yu-hua.
Scheduled to shoot from December 2023, it will now be co-produced by Prague’s Lonely Production, founded by producer-director Michal Sikora.
Lonely Production will oversee the post-production package in the Czech Republic and Europe. Lim has a preference for shooting in Super 16 mm with digital VFX, European expertise feeding into the traditional film process. This will extend the film’s creative possibilities and production quality, Kuek said.

Cacioppo most recently programmed for the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown Brooklyn, where she oversaw the repertory programming, and spearheaded new film series and events. She has been a film programmer for the past two decades, having previously headed up the 92nd Street Y’s Tribeca film program. She is the co-director of the New York branch of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, has an ongoing column, “The Outskirts,” for Screen Slate, and has written on occasion for Mubi.
Thorne worked on the programming team at NewFest, New York’s LGBT film festival, for three years, as both a festival programmer and a consultant for their year-round programming.

Aaron Sorkin is widely considered the king of film and TV dialogue. Actors line up for a chance to feast on his words and the opportunity to deliver a Sorkin-penned speech. And yet his monologues never seem out of place; they fit organically into his stories and his characters. Sorkin says there’s a musicality to that.
“If you’re going to write a speech, you want the water to boil, you want to be able to get there,” Sorkin tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “It’s almost like in a musical. A musical number always works best when it’s the result of words no longer being able to do the trick.” Listen below!
Just this week, Sorkin landed his fourth Academy Award nomination for what may well be his magnum opus, “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” It’s his second feature as a director, a timely...

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Lyra has spent season two tormented by guilt over Roger’s death and wishing she could have done more to help him. Now it looks like she’s going to get the chance. Legion M, billed as the world’s “first fan-owned entertainment company,” has promoted David Baxter to vice president of development, where he will oversee the company’s development slate of film, television, and Vr projects with COO and head of content, Terri Lubaroff.
Baxter has been in the spotlight in recent days as a key event producer of the high-profile Star Lee tribute scheduled for Wednesday at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. The event will be hosted by Kevin Smith who, like industry veteran Baxter, knew and admired the late Marvel Comics icon for decades.
With more than 25 years in the entertainment industry as a development executive, producer, and award-winning WGA writer, Baxter joined Legion M as the head of content-developing services when the company was formed by Paul Scanlan and Jeff Annisonin in 2016. Exclusive: There are dozens of dialogue lines that made William Goldman an iconic screenwriter — “Follow the money” from All the President’s Men, and “Is it safe?” from Marathon Man among them — but to a legion of top screenwriters whom Goldman helped find their voices, here’s a lesser-known signature line just as memorable: “I’m in the book.”
That is what Goldman said to many young screenwriters who dared ask a legend for help, back when people actually thumbed through the white pages of the New York City phone book. That’s where Goldman left his Manhattan number, which led to tutorials over lunches at places like The Carlyle Hotel, where Goldman held court and spread the gospel of good writing to so many. Even though he wrote many a withering column about movies he didn’t love — the manipulative bookend-ed start and end of Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan...

A few years ago, after rough battles with the press and paparazzi and the cancellation of his MSNBC talk show, Alec Baldwin penned a much-publicized article announcing he’d be leaving “public life.” Baldwin seems to have reconsidered that departure and has been all over the media this last year. is currently appearing in two popular films, “BlacKkKlansman” and “Mission Impossible: Fallout.” On the television side he appeared in the limited series “The Looming Tower”, recreated his recurring role on the reboot of “Will and Grace”, hosted “Match Game” and will premiere this fall in “The Alec Baldwin Show,” an interview program on ABC.
Most notably Baldwin continued his appearances on “Saturday Night Live” lampooning Donald Trump. He recently received his 19th Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Supporting Actor. Baldwin won the award last year and has previously won two Best Comedy Actor twice for his role on “30 Rock.

Aaron Sorkin was probably born in the wrong era. And yet here he is, still kicking in 2017. His characters operate under an impossibly witty and clever language, engaging in exchanges only experienced in the movies of Howard Hawks or Frank Capra. It’s fueled by a rapid-fire repartee. For better or worse, Sorkin has replicated this breathless style of dialogue. With the upcoming release of “Molly’s Game,” Sorkin’s directorial debut, we decided to rank every film the man has penned over the course of 25 years. “Malice” (1993) Sorkin’s shoddiest screenplay is also his most dated. In “Malice”, Nicole Kidman plays.

Aaron Sorkin is currently making the press rounds in promotion of his directorial debut “Molly’s Game,” and he recently shared an eye-opening story with USA Today about one of his earliest gigs as the screenwriter of “Malice.” Sorkin had just come off the success of “A Few Good Men” when he re-teamed with Columbia Pictures to write the Alec Baldwin and Nicole Kidman-starring thriller, which was being directed by Harold Becker (“The Boost,” “Sea of Love”).
According to Sorkin, Becker specifically requested him to write a “steamy” sex scene for Nicole Kidman. “Early on in my career, I wrote a movie that I’m not very proud of at all, it just turned into a mess,” Sorkin said, “Alec Baldwin and Nicole Kidman were in it. The director, very close to the start of photography, decided that we were missing a sex scene between Alec and Nicole.”

As Hollywood continues to clean house in the wake of sexual harassment and assault allegations against numerous players in the industry, it’s worth remembering that this behavior was enabled in many small, seemingly innocuous ways. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe readies for its Phase Three finale — the culmination of what will end up being a 22-film run of interconnected feature films, starting with 2008’s “Iron Man” and concluding with its still-unnamed fourth Avengers feature, set to open on May 3, 2019 — the multi-billion dollar blockbuster machine is already looking to the future.
But even with a pair of “post-Phase Three” films already on the docket, including a Spider-Man sequel and a third Guardians of the Galaxy film, the future of the McU still looks overwhelmingly male, and Marvel’s bent towards superhero (not heroine)-dominated features doesn’t seem to be changing directions. Yet.
Before Phase Three wraps, the McU will finally roll out its first superheroine-centric feature: the Brie Larson-starring “Captain Marvel,” which will open just before that final “Avengers” film. The long-rumored feature will also mark another sea change for the company, as it...

Why do you think the characters in Clueless called hot guys "Baldwins"? Back in the '80s and '90s, Alec and his brothers were the equivalent of today's Hemsworths when it came to serving up sexiness as a family. But Alec . . . oh, Alec. That strong jaw. The dark hair. Those piercing blue eyes that could just cut right through you. On shows like Knots Landing and films like Malice, The Hunt For Red October, Glengarry Glen Ross, and even Beetlejuice, Alec Baldwin was it. I refuse to sit here and pretend that he doesn't give off "daddy" vibes and that I don't still find him attractive (when he's not dressed up as Donald Trump or voicing a cartoon baby) - because, yes, his hair may be a shimmery shade of gray now, but those baby blues can still stare right into your soul. Having scoured the ranks of actors to draw up a shortlist of the best of them and then a selection of their best work, we now move on to consider the best work by the greatest writers. This can be a harder thing to judge, given that there will often be a team of writers, or polishing work is done on a script that is otherwise someone else’s work. Quentin Tarantino did some polishing on Crimson Tide, but by contrast his script for Natural Born Killers is much less distinctively his, bearing as it does a lot of Oliver Stone’s fingerprints. What we will (try to) focus on are those writers who rather than being hacks for hire have instead crafted something all their own and seen it transition relatively unmolested to the screen.

Hot on the heels of discussing the best work of Danny Boyle’s career, in honor of this week’s release of Steve Jobs, I want to do the same today with scribe Aaron Sorkin. Considered one of the very best, if not the absolute best, writers in the business, Sorkin is one of the most distinctive creators of dialogue that this generation has. A star both on television and in the movies, Sorkin is an undeniable genius. As such, it’s a distinct pleasure to rank his screenplays, as I’ll be doing below. It’s basically just ranking things from good to great, so everything listed is well worth checking out if you’ve yet to see something. Enjoy, and as always, remember that this is only how I would rank things, not the absolute final word on the matter… First as a bonus, here’s how I would rank his TV writing,...

This Time, It’s Rogue: Cruise Continues Singing It Forever Just Because
Arriving nearly four years after the highly celebrated and significantly lauded fourth Mission Impossible installment, 2011’s Brad Bird directed Ghost Protocol, Tom Cruise and company are back, perhaps nervously expecting to pale in comparison to what remains a difficult act to follow. Though an element of surprise is lacking, it’s safe to say Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is an energetic action comedy manufactured with the utmost attention to detail in its remarkable action sequences. Helmed by favored Tom Cruise scribe Christopher McQuarrie (who wrote Valkyrie, Edge of Tomorrow, directed Jack Reacher, and did uncredited revisions on the last Mi film), the whole endeavor feels like a snug outfit for its headlining celebrity.

Sony’s planned narrative adaptation of the 2014 documentary The Seven Five just took a big step closer to realisation, with the news that the studio is approaching screenwriter Scott Frank to undertake scripting duties. Frank is the scribe behind such titles as Malice, Get Shorty, Out Of Sight, Minority Report and The Wolverine, and his potential involvement brings huge momentum to the project.
The documentary The Seven Five had its premiere at Doc NYC last year, and Sony snapped up the rights to remake it soon after. It details the devastating police corruption case that shook the New York Police Department to its core in the early 1990s, when 75th precinct officer Michael Dowd was tried and convicted of a raft of terrible crimes. Dowd established a network of illegal activities, recruiting his fellow officers to extort money from drug dealers for protection, and also sell drugs of their own.

Exclusive: Aaron Sorkin is reconfirming his dedication to chronicling the rise and scandalous fall of a presidential candidate. The Newsroom and West Wing creator, one of Hollywood’s most outspoken voices in the recent Sony hacking attack, has extended his option on Nyt bestseller The Politician, Andrew Young’s explosive 2010 tell-all about the adultery scandal that ended former North Carolina Senator John Edwards’ 2008 Democratic Presidential campaign.
Young exposed shocking details of the married Edwards’ secret affair with campaign staffer Rielle Hunter that yielded an illegitimate child. The Politician revealed how Young, a volunteer in Edwards’ 1998 Senate run who became his trusted right hand man, was asked to help cover up Edwards’ adultery, fake paternity test results, and claim the child as his own for the Presidential hopeful.
The lid was blown when a tabloid newspaper uncovered the affair, which blindsided Edwards’ cancer-stricken wife Elizabeth and led to the implosion of Edwards’ presidential run.
