Neil Young has released a new album called Before and After, out now via Reprise. But instead of writing and recording a batch of new material, the singer-songwriter took a cue from the Taylor Swift playbook, re-recording select songs from throughout his career.
Before and After is described as “a trip into his music history,” with Young having picked some of his own favorite songs from his catalog to re-visit. It’ll mostly be solo acoustic re-recordings, sequenced so its 13 songs blend seamlessly together from front to back.
“The feeling is captured, not in pieces, but as a whole piece — designed to be listened to that way,” Young said in a statement. “This music presentation defies shuffling, digital organization, separation. Only for listening. That says it all.”
Young also co-produced and co-mixed the record, which includes his 1966 debut with Buffalo Springfield “Burned” all the way up to his 2021 tune “Don’t Forget Love.

As prolific as Neil Young continues to be, much of the veteran singer-songwriter’s contemporary output has consisted of repackaged old material in the form of live albums and studio outtakes. His latest, Before and After, continues in this vein, as every track has appeared, in one form or another, on a previous release.
None of that is to say that Before and After is inessential. Young is a conceptual thinker, a fact that his strict adherence to live recording and spartan production techniques has often disguised. On Before and After, however, the concept is front and center, and the intimacy of the recordings emphasizes what Young was trying to achieve rather than obscures it. Barring some keys provided by Bob Rice, these recordings feature Young singing and playing alone in a room, including some awkward fumbling around on a pump organ.
Opener “I’m the Ocean” in particular is served well by this approach.

John Deyle, who appeared in four Broadway musicals, in more than 100 commercials and as the inept Mr. Science on the first season of Late Night With Conan O’Brien, has died. He was 68.
Deyle died June 22 at his home in Mount Kisco, New York, after a battle with esophageal cancer, his wife, Rebecca Paller, announced.
While auditioning for a role in the musical adaptation of I Remember Mama in 1978, lyricist Martin Charnin told him that he was “all wrong for this show, but we could use you in Annie,” he recalled.
Deyle then made his Broadway debut in March 1979, joining the ensemble of the Sarah Jessica Parker starrer by playing Louis Howe, Fred McCracken and Bert Healy.
He went on to work in the 1980 Broadway revival of Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot, starring Richard Burton, and in the subsequent U.S. and Australian tours of the famed musical that featured Richard Harris in the lead.

This article marks Part 11 of the 21-part Gold Derby series Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Awards, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
The latter half of the 1990s found Meryl Streep struggling to find a proper follow-up to her sublime, Oscar-nominated turn in “The Bridges of Madison County” (1995).
First, there was “Before and After” (1996), a sleepy collaboration with filmmaker Barbet Schroeder and leading man Liam Neeson. The picture, among Streep’s worst box office performers to date, was out of theaters within a month.
A bit more successful was “Marvin’s Room” (1996), a family drama that at last paired Streep with Diane Keaton, plus Hume Cronyn, Gwen Verdon and Leonardo DiCaprio. The film garnered modest reviews and box office receipts upon opening that December and it was ultimately Keaton,...

Directed by Farah Khan, the film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade, Kirron Kher and introduced Deepika Padukone. If you can believe it, it has been 10 years since the magic of Oso hit the big screen.
It is as Farah says, a movie, within a movie within a movie. Set in the 70s and present day, Om Shanti Om has films, stars, sets, drama, dance, action, romance, revenge, reincarnation and finally Happys Endings. It is a movie that has it all and more!
To set the stage check out the trailer that gives you a glimpse into the world of Om and Shantipriya.

Of the 86 feature films (34%) by women directors that screened in Toronto, I saw three in particular which have kept me thinking about how the feminine, or even how woman herself is defined. Speaking generally of “those men” in the power positions throughout the world, I am becoming increasingly convinced that “those men” set an example in their over zealous coveting wealth and resources, and included in their materialistic extremes, is a push to redefine women “as they were” in the days, not so long ago, when they did not have much to say about their status.
The women depicted in the movies in Toronto take daring leaps to change the circumstances of their lives. It was 10 p.m. on Sunday when Gillian Parker and her husband Phillip got the call telling them that a mandatory evacuation order had been issued in the area of their New Territory, Texas, home due to the rising floodwaters of Hurricane Harvey.
The call took the Parkers by surprise given that forecasts had predicted waterfall would be 4-5 ft. below the southwest Houston neighborhood’s levees. But the couple, their 16-year-old daughter Allison Parker and her 81-year-old grandmother Sylvia Parker still packed what they could — splitting four adults and their three dogs between two cars and rushing for safety.

One of the greatest gifts any documentary can get is direct contribution from everyone involved in the story on display. “What Carter Lost,” the latest film in the Espn “30 for 30” docuseries, gives a thorough look at a tumultuous few months in late 1989, as one Dallas high school ascended to the heights of Texas football – before some players lost nearly everything.
For casual or non-football fans, director Adam Hootnick sets up the on-field supremacy of the Carter High School squad. Lauded here by at least one NFL hall-of-famer as the greatest high school football team in history, this group of Carter students came to wider cultural attention when their 1989 playoff run collided head-on with Odessa Permian, the team profiled in “Friday Night Lights,” Buzz Bissinger’s book that begat the film and later TV series.
