Julian Senior, the veteran Warner Bros. marketing and publicity executive in Europe who enjoyed close relationships with filmmakers including Oscar winners Stanley Kubrick, Clint Eastwood, David Puttnam and Neil Jordan, has died. He was 85.
Senior died Jan. 1 of pneumonia and heart failure in a hospital near his home in Borehamwood, England, Conor Nolan, his friend and onetime Warner Bros. colleague, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of South Africa, Senior joined Warner Bros. in 1970 after an eight-year run at MGM, where he was an advertising and publicity consultant in its European Regional Office, and he stuck with the studio through 2000.
At the start, Senior helped mastermind the advertising and publicity campaign for the landmark Kubrick film A Clockwork Orange (1971), and he also worked with the famed director on The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
“He taught me how publicity, advertising and marketing operates,” Senior once said of Kubrick.

The 80th annual Venice Film Festival launches on the Lido on August 30. This edition features a slew of Oscar hopefuls including Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” David Fincher’s “The Killer,” Yorgas Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” and Michael Mann’s “Ferrari.” They’re all vying for the top prize, the Golden Lion.
Seventy years ago, there were four now-classics in competition: William Wyler’s “Roman Holiday,” for which Audrey Hepburn would win Oscar, John Huston’s “Moulin Rouge,” Samuel Fuller’s “Pickup on South Street” and Vincente Minnelli’s “The Bad and the Beautiful,” which had recently picked up five Oscars. But the Golden Lion didn’t roar at the 14th edition of the international film festival.

Marlowe is a movie directed by Neil Jordan starirng Liam Neeson. With Diane Kruger and Jessica Lange. It is based on a novel by John Banville.
Marlowe is one of those films that probably shouldn’t have been made, and let me explain why: the main character has all the connotations of a classic that has reached a “sacrosanct” status and is probably the one of the most untouchable characters in the history of cinema, then played by the greatest star in the zenith of the golden age the seventh art – Humphrey Bogart.
About the Movie
Whether it was well-made, brilliant, or even if Orson Welles had directed it, I would have reason to be a bit reticent with this film. And, indeed I am, for the obvious reason that it dares revisit an untouchable classic.
Liam Neeson provides us with a similar role – if not identical – to Bogart’s,...

Liam Neeson has now starred in 100 films, only a quarter of which are "Taken" sequels. I kid, I kid! Even 15 years into his surprising late-career run as an action star (going back to the original "Taken" in 2008), the Irish thespian retains an eclectic body of work under his belt. Since he started acting in the late 1970s, Neeson's starred in high-art dramas, auteur-driven period pieces, raunchy burlesques, pulpy blockbusters, classic literary adaptations, cheeky animated films, and, yes, more action movies about deadly old-timers than you can shake a stick at. Also, he played Jesus once. Twice, if Aslan from "Chronicles of Narnia" counts.
"Marlowe," which officially gives Neeson 100 movies to his name, casts the actor as Raymond Chandler's famous hard-boiled private eye Philip Marlowe in a story based on John Banville's 2014 novel, "The Black-Eyed Blonde." Neil Jordan's new detective movie "Marlowe," starring Liam Neeson, is the director's first since "Greta" in 2018. Jordan may be one of the moodiest filmmakers working, and the smoky mysteries of film noir seem especially suited to his skills. "Marlowe" does indeed feature the famous P.I. created by Raymond Chandler in his 1939 novel "The Big Sleep," but it is not based on any of Chandler's works. Instead, the screenplay, by William Monahan ("The Departed") is based on a spinoff Marlowe novel called "The Black-Eyed Blonde" by John Banville. True to the genre, "Marlowe" is about the eponymous detective's search for the ex-lover of a rich heiress (Diane Kruger). A notable piece of trivia: "Marlowe" constitutes Neeson's 100th official screen credit.
As of this writing, "Marlowe" is not enjoying the best reviews (it currently has a 23 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but fans of film noir would do well to...

And look at that, not a leprechaun in sight.
For a relatively small island with a tiny film industry, Ireland certainly gets a lot of representation in movies — sometimes via other places masquerading as Ireland, other times by representing other places (the beach landing scene in Saving Private Ryan was shot in Wexford, for example) or worlds (Ahch-To in The Force Awakens), and occasionally it even gets to play itself. The island also exports a rather impressive number of cinematic talents considering the fact that, though every third or forth person you meet on the street in, say, Boston or Chicago (a lot of places, really) will claim Irish heritage, the Republic of Ireland has a population of slightly less than 4.6 million and Northern Ireland slightly more than 1.8 million, bringing the island to a total of only around 6.4 million. In other words, still around 2 million less than before the Famine, over...

Update: Dan Stevens will lead Apostle, according to Variety.
Gareth Evans‘ years-long silence — filmmaking-wise; I don’t know what the guy does with his life — may be coming to an end, as a THR article informs us the Raid helmer’s collaborating with Xyz Films and Severn Screen on Apostle. A period thriller, it concerns “a mysterious man who travels to a remote island in search of his missing sister” who’s been “kidnapped by a religious cult, which is demanding a ransom for her return” — presumably leading to a bit of ass-kicking, or so I think when “it soon becomes clear that the cult will regret the day it baited this man.”
The Raid circa some very different time and place is a thrilling proposition, though it may be preferable to see Evans expand his canvas a bit. Apostle seems primed for just that shift.

After years of focusing on rescuing his fictional family members from bad guys, Liam Neeson is taking yet another step back into the world of prestige drama. Deadline reports that Neeson will star in The Trainer, a new movie from The Crying Game director Neil Jordan. Neeson will play a walled-off man in Ireland whose life is upended by a teenaged refugee named Nadya and a horse. The equine, called Allabelle, “is about to prove that they may all have one race left inside of them,” according to Deadline. Ever since Taken became a surprise smash hit back in 2008, Liam Neeson has leaned heavily on action thrillers as his career experienced a nice late game bump. He's been in The A-Team, Unknown, The Grey, Battleship, Non-Stop, A Walk Among the Tombstones, Run All Night...the list goes on. But now the Oscar nominee is returning to a more subdued drama for the first time in a little while, and reuniting with a previous collaborator in the process.
Deadline reports Neeson is leading the cast of The Trainer, a horse training drama that will reunite him with his Michael Collins director Neil Jordan (who also helmed The Crying Game and Interview with a Vampire). David Donohue, James Villemaire, and Sully writer Todd Komarnicki are tackling the screenplay.
Neeson will star as John Moore, a premier horse trainer in the west of Ireland who, beset by tragedy, loses everything he cherishes and almost forgets to live.

Warner Bros. Pictures have announced the award winning and much loved historical epic Michael Collins will be back in Irish cinemas for a limited period in a new digital format from March 18th. The film will be screened in 60 cinemas across Ireland. Michael Collins tells the powerful, turbulent story of one of Ireland's most controversial patriots and revolutionary heroes, known as ‘The Lion Of Ireland’, who leads his countrymen in their fight for independence. Set in the early 20th Century, when a monumental history of oppression and bloodshed had divided Ireland and its people, the film covers the bloody 1916 Easter Uprising, when Irish revolutionaries surrendered to the overwhelming military power of the British forces and Collins was arrested. Upon his release, he takes leadership of the Irish independence movement and strives to create a free and peaceful country.

The world has lost British great, Alan Rickman. The actor sadly died at the age of 69.
From the AP:
Rickman’s family said Thursday that the actor had died after a battle with cancer.
Born to a working-class London family in 1946 and trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Rickman was often cast as the bad guy; with his rich, languid voice he could invest evil with wicked, irresistible relish.
His breakout role was as scheming French aristocrat the Vicomte de Valmont in an acclaimed 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Christopher Hampton’s “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.”

While the movie world celebrated the finest in the year's achievements with the Oscar nominations unveiled this morning, underpinning it all was a sense of sadness as acclaimed and beloved British actor Alan Rickman has passed away at the age of 69. The actor first earned attention for his work on the stage, breaking out with this Tony-nominated turn as Valmont in "Les Liaisons Dangereuses." Hollywood followed, and two years later, Rickman took the role of a lifetime as Hans Gruber in "Die Hard," crafting one of the big screen's all time best villains. Roles in "Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves" and "Rasputin" also brought him attention, but Rickman reached a new generation of fans thanks to his performance as Professor Snape in the "Harry Potter" franchise. But it's really the range of his roles that truly made Rickman stand out. His performances in "Michael Collins," "Truly Madly Deeply," "Love Actually,...

2016 has gotten off to a brutal start for great British entertainers. As the world gets over the death of David Bowie a few days ago, it has been set in shock again as acting legend Alan Rickman has died in London.
Rickman had been suffering from cancer and his death was confirmed on Thursday by his family. It's the worst kind of coincidence - Bowie and Rickman were 69 years old and passed after battling cancer, and a week before that British musician Lemmy also passed away from cancer just days after turning 70.
Rickman's distinct features and immediately identifiable diction were admired by generations of actors and made him synonymous with playing antagonists - something he famously wasn't a fan of as he preferred to play the dashing leading man role which he did manage to do in some of his work.
Coming to fame with a key role in The BBC's mini-series "The Barchester Chronicles,...

Painfully soon after we found out that David Bowie had passed away, reports are coming in that well-loved British stage and screen actor Alan Rickman has died in London after a battle with cancer, also at the age of 69. Rickman will be best known to this generation for portraying Professor Snape in the Harry Potter movies, but he's just as recognizable for his brilliantly villainous turn as Hans Gruber in the first Die Hard. Over the years he's left his mark playing many other diverse characters in movies such as Michael Collins, Galaxy Quest, and Dogma. The Guardian first broke this terrible news, and it has since been confirmed by the actor's family. May you rest in peace, sir.

Twilight Time presents Irish auteur Neil Jordan’s 1982 directorial debut Angel (aka Danny Boy) on Blu-ray, an obscurely regarded gem from the great filmmaker. A visually vibrant examination of the entrenched malaise infecting a region in the midst of what’s been referred to as “the troubles” (or the Northern Ireland Conflict, a decades spanning political issue concerning the constitutional status of Ireland in the UK vs. a United Ireland, informed also by religious views and ethnic background), this melancholy revenge drama showcases Jordan’s enduring muse Stephen Rea, as well as themes he’d continue to enhance in subsequent features. Hampered by a lack of developing tension, mostly due to a dramatic catalyst granted more weight than it could possibly wield, it’s certainly a solemn precursor to Jordan’s later masterpiece that decade, Mona Lisa (1986).

Star of the Taken franchise, Liam Neeson, could be about to sign on to portray another man with a very particular skill-set – this time as U.S. Army General Douglas MacArthur, in the upcoming movie, Operation Chromite. Set in 1950 during the Korean War, the film will centre on a group of Korean soldiers participating in MacArthur’s planned military operation, which represented a significant turning point in the conflict.
The Korean War was fought from 1950-1953, though the consequences of the clash are still playing out today. The United Nations stepped in with military force when North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950, and General MacArthur was tasked with leading the United Nations Command in the country, in addition to the job he was already doing – overseeing the occupation of Japan. In 2008, if someone mentioned the name of actor Liam Neeson, chances are you immediately thought of him in one of two ways. It is likely that you automatically imagined the actor in his portrayals as historical figures – Oskar Schindler, Alfred Kinsey, Michael Collins – or of the gravitas he lent to franchises such as Star Wars and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. However, that all changed with the release of Taken six winters ago. With his gruff heroics and thick voice, he became one of Hollywood’s most bankable action heroes. Not bad for a man who was 56 years old at the time.
Since Taken, Neeson’s star power has soared. As the biggest action stars of the previous generation (the Fords, Stallones and Schwarzeneggers) struggle to excite and entice audiences for a bloody time at the cinema, Neeson rose into one of the most in-charge (and in demand) action stars of the current era.

Like many of you, I was pretty surprised and more than a little bit delighted when Liam Neeson made the next act in his illustrious career an action packed one. No one expected Taken to be a hit, or as satisfyingly enjoyable as it was, but it signaled a new trajectory for Neeson. That’s been all well and good, but one thing that it’s cost us is his performances in Oscar fare. Since Taken, Neeson has more or less dropped off of the Academy’s radar, with only one upcoming project hopefully set to return him to prestige territory. I like when he kicks ass, like he does in Friday’s new release Run All Night, but I prefer it when he contends for awards. Neeson is a very strong dramatic actor and certainly very solid as an action hero, but it’s the former where he’s really been able to shine.

The easy take on Liam Neeson’s career over the past seven years is that the classy Irish actor turned into an action star when he should have been concentrating on Shakespeare or something. But, truth is, Neeson’s attraction to action is nothing new.
“I always liked the older action-movie stars like Robert Mitchum and Charles Bronson when I was growing up in Northern Ireland,” he explains during an interview at a Hollywood hotel. “When the first Taken movie became a hit, all of these other action scripts started coming my way — which was flattering — and they were good, so I did them and had a great time at it.”
And the 62-year-old, New York-based thesp isn’t easing up on action anytime soon. A few months from now Run All Night will hit theatres with Neeson as an aging hitman, and this month we have the release of Taken 3,...

Liam Neeson is back in Cineplex theatres this week reprising his role as ex-cia agent Bryan Mills in Taken 3, opening on Friday. The 6’4” Irish giant has grown into an action hero as of late thanks to movies like Taken, The A-Team, and The Grey, even though we’ll always have a soft spot for his more dramatic roles in Kinsey, Michael Collins and as widower Daniel in the dramedy Love Actually, just to name a few. We’ve been big fans of Neeson since way back in the 80s in movies like The Bounty and in Suspect where he plays a deaf-mute homeless man defended by attorney Cher when he is accused of murder. Sounds intriguing, right? And of course, who can forget his defining role as Oskar Schindler in 1993’s Schindler’s List.
