Actor Edward Norton has been a fan of Jungle Fever filmmaker Spike Lee for quite some time. But he likened the criticism the director once faced with what Woody Allen experienced.

Norton had always been a fan of Lee. Before the two collaborated together, the actor famously wrote Lee a letter about his Denzel Washington movie He Got Game. Norton believed that the film might’ve been one of Lee’s most underrated projects. But he wanted to show the director how much he appreciated the 1998 feature.
“I wrote him a letter after He Got Game, ” Norton once said according to The Gainesville Sun. “I really loved that movie and I thought people missed it. It had a lot of texture and layers. There is a lot of room for the actor and the audience in Spike Lee movies.

Mark Ruffalo, who replaced Edward Norton by taking over as Hulk in the MCU, has been very candid about the recasting of the Marvel superhero. Norton starred in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk. However, the studio decided to recast the character for future projects reportedly due to creative differences with Norton, alleging that they sought an actor who could blend well with The Avengers ensemble cast.

And the studio decided to move ahead with Ruffalo, who made his MCU debut with the 2012 film. However, after landing the role, he did reach out to the Fight Club star to discuss the transition and shared that Norton offered his full support for his future in the superhero franchise.

The campaign was launched last week by UK film professionals Hanna Flint, Julia Jackman, Leila Latif, Sophie Monks Kaufman and Helen Simmons, and has immediately taken off with works from the likes of Jonathan Glazer, Spike Lee and Tessa Thompson. The organizers had no backing or budget and largely organized efforts over a WhatsApp group chat launched over dinner in February.
The auction’s final lots now feature a Joker poster signed by Phoenix, a You Were Never Really Here poster signed by Phoenix and Lynne Ramsay, a Crown script signed by Emma Corrin, who played Princess Diana, a custom Cinema for Gaza painting by American History X director Tony Kaye and a chat with writer-comedian Julio Torres and custom tattoo design.

Although recent years have witnessed fewer performances from Edward Norton, it is safe to say that fans do miss him. Norton has a reputation for being particularly intense on film sets, however, when he does, people are sure something great is going to come out on the other side. American History X was one such movie! His co-star in the movie, Edward Furlong, recently revealed what it was like working with such an actor.

Edward Norton’s Acting Process on the Set of American History X
Edward Norton‘s reputation for maintaining a no-nonsense attitude on set is well-known, yet it’s fascinating how his seriousness seamlessly aligned with the demands of American History X. The film required a gritty and intense portrayal, which Norton undoubtedly delivered flawlessly.

When it comes to lone acting Oscar nominations, the category with the fewest examples is Best Supporting Actor. After two consecutive years of there being no new additions to that subgroup, Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”) became its 54th member in 2023 after having been largely ignored by other awards bodies over the preceding weeks. He directly followed Tom Hanks, who is the only other entrant from the last five years.
Within the last decade, this club has only grown by seven, with those who preceded Hanks and Henry being Robert Duvall, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, and Christopher Plummer. 2018 marked the fifth instance of two men accomplishing the feat at once, thus tying the category’s record for most bids of this kind in a single year. Contextually, the corresponding Best Supporting Actress record is three, while that of both lead categories is four.

"The Incredible Hulk" was an early stumbling block for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Released in June 2008, a mere month after "Iron Man," lightning did not strike twice for Marvel Studios' burgeoning movie enterprise; "Incredible Hulk" got a shrug from critics and underperformed at the box office.
Even so, Marvel Studios steamrolled ahead. Star Edward Norton didn't return for any future MCU films and Bruce Banner was recast with Mark Ruffalo for "The Avengers." The behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Dave Gonzales, Gavin Edwards, and Joanna Robinson features a chapter about "The Incredible Hulk" and its gamma radiation-flavored fallout. The book ultimately puts the production's unpleasant memories on the shoulders of Edward Norton, suggesting his actor-as-auteur approach solidified Marvel's top-down filmmaking tactics.
An unnamed "Marvel performer" tells the authors, "We have a no-a**hole policy on our movies," and the book traces this policy back to Norton's behavior.

This post contains spoilers for the season 1 finale of "Gen V."
"The Boys" has been praised for the way showrunner Eric Kripke and the rest of the writers' room have successfully adapted Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's popular comic book series to more accurately reflect our constantly shifting cultural landscape. Many of the plot points and references are pulled straight from the headlines, with promises that the upcoming season 4 will directly tackle even more real-world themes. Considering season 3 ended with Homelander literally living out the claim of the twice-impeached, found legally liable for sexual abuse and defamation, and feloniously indicted former president Trump's statement "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters," it certainly seems like the show is heading toward dissecting not only the people who will do anything to stop him but also those who have been dangerously radicalized by his actions.

Unlike Damon, who already had minor parts in movies, Primal Fear would be Norton’s cinematic debut. The Fight Club star asked casting director Deborah Aquila, through a Fax, for an opportunity to audition. Aquila then gave Norton a chance to prove himself.

I have just two words for producer Lawrence Turman, who died Saturday at 96. “Thank you.”
Way back in 1968, Larry Turman, who at the time had much bigger things on his mind, managed to change my life. I was then growing up in the working-class suburbs of Detroit. A garage band of which I was the drummer had landed a gig at the Willow Drive-in outside of Ypsilanti. One of the pictures that night was The Graduate, produced by Turman (and directed by Mike Nichols). Although I’d never given it one minute’s thought before, I went home knowing I would live in California.
It wasn’t Mrs. Robinson that did it. No, really, it was Benjamin Braddock’s manic tour up and down the state, back when California was still as good as its myth. Beverly Hills to Berkeley. Berkeley to Beverly Hills. Palms. Pines. The bridge. The pool.

Lawrence Turman Dies: Oscar-Nominated Producer Of ‘The Graduate’, ‘American History X’ & More Was 96
Oscar-nominated producer Lawrence Turman died Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital. He was 96. He had a stellar career not only as a producer of such seminal films as The Graduate (1967), The Great White Hope (1970), American History X (1998) and many more in a producing career that lasted six decades, but he also took a significant turn when he left his partnership with producer David Foster to head the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC in 1991, an association that continued until his retirement just two years ago.
His son, John Turman, confirmed the death to Deadline. “Our father Lawrence Turman passed away late yesterday,” he said. “It’s sad, but he had a long and storied life, and it’s the passing of an era.” He added that the MPTF is planning a memorial service as well as USC at a later date.

Courtroom movies tend to have a winning formula that appeals to our sense of justice. We never want to see innocent people sent down for crimes they didn’t commit, so a reliable story can usually be built around the process of defending unlucky characters in a court of law. But because so much of that drama transpires on a single set, making a really good courtroom movie requires certain elements to work spectacularly.
You’ll need a great, charismatic lawyer whose life, career, or reputation depends on winning the case. Then there are your defendants, who must be at least a little relatable. After all, any one of us can get mixed up in some unfortunate circumstances given the right series of events! Then there are the witnesses, who must be cajoled into telling the truth, and the opposing counsel, who is often as antagonistic as the injustice itself.

Exclusive: Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Vacation), Dennis Haysbert (Far from Heaven), Nicole Richie (Bless This Mess) and Josh Peck (How I Met Your Father) are among the newest additions to the indie comedy Summer Camp from writer-director Castille Landon (After franchise).
Diane Keaton, Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard and Eugene Levy will lead the ensemble, as previously announced, with Betsy Sodaro (Ghosts) and Tom Wright (Daisy Jones & The Six) rounding it out.
The film heading into production next month in North Carolina tells the story of Nora, Ginny and Mary, who have been best friends since childhood, spending their summers together inseparably at sleepaway camp. As the years have passed, they’ve seen each other less and less, so when the chance to reunite for a summer camp reunion arises, they all take it, some begrudgingly and others, excitedly. Each of their lives might not be where they’d imagined, but...

Actor Edward Norton has always been passionate about his performances, which has often shown through his work.
But although Norton appreciates the art of acting, there are times when he becomes discouraged with the film industry altogether. And perhaps he’s at his most displeased with Hollywood during the awards season.
Edward Norton goes through cycles thinking that acting is ‘ridiculous’ Edward Norton | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Norton has been a pillar of the movie industry since his debut in the film Primal Fear. Since then, the actor has contributed decades’ worth of work to Hollywood, establishing himself a strong legacy of films. As is the case with other actors, his love of acting stems from the ability to walk in others’ shoes.

There’s no denying that making a film is difficult.
Not only does getting a story from script to screen cost millions, but it also requires both cast and crew to devote years to a singular project.
Despite filmmaking being a labour of love, there are still occasions when a director – the person who arguably spends the most amount of time working on a film – can dislike the final results.
The majority of cases stem from studio interference: when filmmakers have to make changes to their work due to creative differences with the financiers.
Other common causes for dissatisfaction are when directors are rushed into a project (mainly sequels), when they regret an early artistic decision, or – in Steven Soderbergh’s case – when they knew 15 minutes in there was a problem but continued anyway.
Below are 20 directors who dislike their own films, including David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and a few Marvel directors.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we discuss Red Hot Chili Peppers' Dani California, directed by Tony Kaye. What to make of Tony Kaye, Hollywood's most infamous enfant terrible, and all but persona non grata in the business? His reputation all has to do with the fall out on the set of American History X, where he, in his battle with the studio's and Edward Norton, butted heads so much that he burned bridges. Tony Kaye did not fully stand behind the final cut and showed up to board meetings accompanied by a priest, a rabbi and a monk, instead. In interviews after the fact Tony Kaye alluded to meltdowns and ego-problems,...

Edward Norton is a brilliant actor — and he knows it. He cares about the projects he takes on and he's controlling about how they're made. The final cut of "American History X" was even one that he edited, much to director Tony Kaye's dismay. Norton has thus developed a reputation as an actor who's difficult to work with. Norton's one-time "25th Hour" co-star Brian Cox wrote of him, "He's a nice lad but a bit of a pain in the arse because he fancies himself as a writer-director." Norton's "my way or the highway" attitude is also known to have cost him his role as the Incredible Hulk.
There are directors who Norton respects, though — game recognizes game. One of them is the man who directed him in "25th Hour": Spike Lee. Speaking to GQ and recalling "25th Hour," Norton was downright effusive in his praise for Lee:...

Edward Norton made his film debut starring alongside Richard Gere as the mentally disturbed altar boy in 1996's "Primal Fear," and right out of the gate, he proved he could hang with the top talent in Hollywood. He followed up that smashing debut with roles in "Everyone Says I Love You," "American History X," and "Fight Club." In the first three years of his career, Norton became a leading man and earned two Academy Award nominations, one for "Primal Fear" and another for "American History X." Not bad for a rookie.
Along with talent, Norton has a reputation for being difficult to work with, which he earned relatively early in his career. However, a Golden Globe trophy and Academy Award nominations carry a lot of weight around Tinsel Town, so you'd expect Hollywood studios to fall all over themselves to make the actor happy. However, back in 2003, Norton bent to...

Edward Norton is one of our generation's greatest actors. He has collaborated with a slew of renowned directors. Often, (and sometimes to the detriment of his reputation), he works behind the scenes of the films he stars in. He took over the editing room while director Tony Kaye fought with the studio over "American History X"; he argued over the "Red Dragon" script with director Brett Ratner, who told the Los Angeles Times, "He likes to challenge the director. It's all about intellectual debate ... Edward's instinct is going to be, 'I have to take over this film.' He's going to try to rescue the film"; he wrote parts of "The Incredible Hulk" script to improve his character arc (via Entertainment Weekly).
To this date, he has only made two films in the span of nearly twenty years: "Keeping the Faith" in 2000 and "Motherless Brooklyn" in 2019. Norton tells Interview magazine...

The leaves are withering, the air is turning crisp, and film festival season is well underway — which means even more foreign-language movies to receive raves on the fall awards circuit before getting promptly buried on a streamer. But don't let that happen to "Athena," a staggering French drama that is in danger of falling into the Netflix abyss, crowded out by your "Gray Men" or "Kissing Booth's." Wes Anderson is a director whose films all reflect his specific style. They feature the same unique shot compositions, thematic messaging, and a dose of whimsy. Some people criticize Anderson for this, saying he isn't capable of making a movie any different than all his others. But in a world where mainstream American movies are becoming more homogenous and visually uninteresting, it's refreshing to see a talented director who leaves his own personal signature on every one of his movies. Not every director needs to direct in the Marvel house style, and I'd rather see the vision of one person reflected over and over again than the vision of a conglomerate.
With such films as "The Royal Tenenbaums," "Moonrise Kingdom," and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" under his belt, all reflective of his unique directing style, one can't dispute the fact that Wes Anderson's style tends to produce fun, funny movies that are beautifully shot.

In moments of extreme duress, human beings are allegedly capable of amazing physical feats. This phenomenon is called "hysterical strength." There can be no accurate study of the condition because the surge of adrenaline (or possibly norepinephrine) is highly situational and momentary. So all we've got to go on are unverified stories of, say, a woman lifting a car that had fallen off its jacks to save her baby — an incredible event comic-book legend Jack Kirby claimed to have witnessed, which led to the creation of the Hulk.
Esteemed actor Edward Norton knows a thing or two about the Hulk. He also knows about bulking up for a role (the man got positively chiseled to play a skinhead in Tony Kaye's "American History X"). Is "American History X" empty provocation? Is it apologia for white supremacist gang culture? Is it a profoundly sad document of the tensions dominating '90s Los Angeles? The movie continues to be shocking and troubling as the years pass, from its shootout opening to its brutal, contradictory ending. Tony Kaye's 1998 film (which he would attempt to disown in very public confrontations with New Line Cinema) deals directly with racism and the environment that powers it. Focusing on prejudice from the perspective of racists in the crucible of gang violence was an inspired choice.
The movie's mood is set up by its opening titles, with Anne Dudley's score (sounding like doom; she used strings and a boy's choir to emphasize the neo-Nazis) over grainy, black-and-white images of Venice Beach. There's a suggestion of faded majesty, which point-of-view character Danny Vinyard (Edward Furlong) alludes to in voiceover, claiming "this...

It's rightfully considered a contender for being one of the most disturbing scenes ever filmed — yet, anyone who has watched "American History X" knows that its curb-stomp scene, though brutally visceral, is far from the only moment of discomfort and horror found in a tale about a Venice Beach gang of neo-Nazis, called the Disciples of Christ (D.O.C.). Every second of the film permeates with their vividly racist rhetoric and cruel acts of terror against the people of color who live in their neighborhoods. The grocery store raid is particularly difficult to watch, especially the tormenting of the female cashier as the men...

"American History X" is a hard-hitting story about intergenerational racism. Edward Norton stars as Derek Vinyard, a reformed skinhead who tries to rescue his younger brother Danny, played by a pensive Edward Furlong, from the clutches of the neo-Nazi movement. "American History X" was critically hailed and Norton received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his formidable performance. In his essay for The Guardian, "American History X" director Tony Kaye explains why he cast Norton in the role, and why the actor ended up working more behind the scenes.

Sometimes movies take a little while to come together. Deadline reports that after nearly a decade of development, the dark comedy "The Trainer" is finally on its way towards the silver screen, directed by "American History X" helmer Tony Kaye.
