- The skeletons of two women are show seated in chairs as if they are alive. It is implied that these women were deliberately starved to death. A man causes the skeletons' heads to topple off. He then pretends to kiss one of the skulls.
- A man commits suicide by allowing himself to be torn apart and devoured by owls. His death is shown but is not graphic.
- A man suffers an episode of madness/senility in front of his daughter, distressing the girl.
- The head cook is implied to abuse the children in his care. He is shown sharpening a cleaver, then using it to slash a side of beef, which drips blood. He says he is "practising" to murder another character.
- A girl is struck by lightning and dies.
- A girl commits suicide by jumping from a window into a river. Her body is shown sinking.
