Elizabeth Banks was born on February 10, 1974, in Pittsfield, a small city in western Massachusetts. Her parents, Ann Wallace, a bank employee, and Mark P. Mitchell, a factory worker, have played significant roles in her life.
Her childhood was filled with horses, athletics, and even a nomination for the local Harvest Queen. While playing baseball as a child, Elizabeth broke her leg sliding into third base and was prevented from playing sports for a while.
During that time, she decided to try her hand at acting, and she auditioned for the school play. Even in college, she was often called a “goody-two-shoes,” even though she is quoted as saying, “… every goody-two-shoes has a bad side.”

Stunning videos capturing a meteor flashing across Europe went viral over the weekend. Luckily, the European Space Agency concluded that the likelihood of any meteorites being found on Earth was low, which is great news considering that meteorites crash-landing on our planet spells massive trouble when it comes to horror.
The Blob, Creepshow, and Night of the Creeps all showcase the perils of meteorites unleashing an alien menace upon an unsuspecting population, and the niche subgenre gets perfectly encapsulated in filmmaker James Gunn’s Slither. One small, unassuming piece of space rock decimates a small South Carolina town through an evolving parasitic invader.
The Setup
Writer/Director James Gunn packs his feature debut with an almost dizzying amount of references in his love letter to horror, beginning with the Sam Raimi shaky cam that tracks the meteorites crashing in the opening sequence. The horror nods and cameos keep coming as...

As the Northern Lights make a rare appearance by illuminating the night sky across the world, with delighted sky watchers enjoying the view, James Gunn’s Green Lantern actor Nathan Fillion makes the best use of the moment. Clicking images with his side profile and the aurora borealis dancing in the background sky, Fillion shared the image on his Instagram with a cheeky caption.

What if Superman had turned out to be evil? That was the idea explored by director David Yarovesky’s super-powered horror film Brightburn, which was released back in 2019. Even though the movie made under $33 million at the global box office, the budget was low enough (somewhere in the range of 6 to 12 million) that producer James Gunn said they were talking about a sequel just a couple months after the film reached screens. Then we went a long time with no mentions of Brightburn 2 – until production company The H Collective, which was also behind Brightburn, confirmed that a sequel was in development last September. Things got confusing last month when Gunn took to Threads to say there are “no plans at all” for a Brightburn 2 right now… but Gunn has cleared up some of the confusion by revealing that a sequel is unlikely due to a complicated rights situation.

Actor and recent Oscar-winner Robert Downey Jr. is known for his decade-long role as Iron Man in the MCU. The actor laid the foundations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside director Jon Favreau and producer Kevin Feige. The film is largely credited with having changed how superhero films were perceived in Hollywood.
Downey Jr.’s off-screen persona often includes a self-aware yet inflated sense of ego. However, even he set it aside to name James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the best film in the franchise. The Oppenheimer star mentioned how he was surprised by how great the film was, with relatively unknown characters, and ended up being so important for the MCU.

Paul Rudd has become an integral part of the MCU as Ant-Man. His debut MCU film in 2015 provided an entertaining and fresh look at an unexplored side of the MCU, including the quantum realm, along with the character’s size control powers. The character also became a significant factor in the fight against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.
Paul Rudd as Scott Lang in 2015’s Ant-Man
Before Paul Rudd was cast, many other actors were rumored for the part, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Nathan Fillion. The latter was rumored years back, even before the first Avengers film. However, Fillion would never have chosen Ant-Man if he had been given the choice to play a Marvel superhero.

Actor Nathan Fillion recently found himself cast in movies like The Suicide Squad and Superman: Legacy. But back before these roles, many were eager to see Fillion in superhero movies in some form. However, there was one role fans linked him to that Fillion just couldn’t see himself playing.
Why it took so long for Nathan Fillion to do a Marvel movie Nathan Filliom | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
It seemed it was only a matter of time before Fillion did a superhero feature. He already had good professional relationships with two filmmakers connected with Marvel movies. He worked alongside Avengers director Joss Whedon in the cult classic show Firefly. He was also good friends with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, who he did Slither and Super with.
At the time, Fillion shared that he didn’t do a Marvel movie because he was tied up with another franchise.

James Gunn has been a consistent filmmaker producing many fine works over the years. After his two acclaimed indie films, Slither and Super, Gunn transitioned to big-budget filmmaking with the Guardians of the Galaxy films in the MCU. Before he became the head of DC Studios, he even made some of the best DC projects, including The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
A still from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad
Despite Gunn’s films being loved by fans, there is one aspect that they have been complaining about in the past few years. The director has been including his wife Jennifer Holland in some of his recent projects, and some have accused him of promoting nepotism. Gunn clapped back at those haters in a social media post where he made fun of their constant complaints.

Love it, hate it, or love to hate it, Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn has left an impression on viewers. With its acerbic (and maybe muddled) allegory about social and economic class in the UK, the movie is a big twisty swing from the writer-director of Promising Young Woman. It also features star Barry Keoghan going there. In some scenes, there constitutes prancing around a luxurious manor in his birthday suit, galloping as free and liberated as a baby elephant charging a watering hole.
In others, there consists of the literal water (and other fluids therein) pooling around the hole of a bathtub. You know the scene: After Felix (Jacob Elordi), the wealthy patron and object of obsession for Keoghan’s Oliver Quick, is spied pleasuring himself in the bath, Ollie sneaks in afterward to slurp up the remainder that didn’t go down the drain. It’s disgusting, off-putting, and supposedly “titillating,...

Horror has come into its own in the 21st century. This is not to say that the genre has ever not been one of the most interesting and creative in the long history of cinema. Since nearly the beginning of the art form, using moving images to scare audiences has been a gateway for aspirin filmmakers to break into the industry—or for even veterans to creatively something about the greater world by painting a landscape of anxiety.
Nonetheless, the 21st century (particularly beginning in its second decade) has brought a renewed appreciation for scary movies’ abilities to speak to audiences with more than just “boo.” With that in mind, we at Den of Geek have polled our staff and collected the below list of what we generally consider to be the best chillers of the fast quarter-century or so. Enjoy.

The historic Power Trip festival kicked off on Friday night (October 6th) in Indio, California. The three-day event features six of the biggest hard rock and heavy metal acts in the world, with two bands performing each night.
Tens of thousands of fans descended upon the Empire Polo Club, the same site where Coachella is held every year. They were greeted by a giant devil-horn-shaped cactus, letting them know that they were in for a weekend of legendary rock music.
Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden had the honor of playing the first night, with Maiden taking the stage first at 6:55 p.m., about 10 minutes later than the advertised 6:45 set time.

Science fiction fans remember the last four months of 2002 as a blessed but bedeviled time. "Firefly" became a 14-episode phenomenon, dead in the water before the season ended, but eternal in the hearts of its viewers. Their passion managed the impossible, reviving the show for a big-screen send-off in "Serenity" and several canonical comic book miniseries. To this day, crafters knit their own loving reconstructions of Jayne's remarkably orange hat. A Malcolm Reynolds -- or five -- can be found at any Sf convention, or recreated in video games by players aiming to misbehave.
The cast was chosen for their charisma and chemistry with each other, and that shines through in the ways they've found to reconnect over the years. Nathan Fillion is a particular lightning rod, doing voice work with Adam Baldwin and Alan Tudyk in "Halo 3," and co-starring with Tudyk on the web series "Con Man." But...

Above: US one sheet for Gas. Art by Robert Grossman. How much attention do you pay to title treatments? By that I mean—in case it’s not obvious—the way the title of a film appears on a poster. Title treatments can range from the simple to the spectacular, from mere type to elaborate works of art. They can range from, for example, the unadorned but authoritative Gotham Bold sans serif of Oppenheimer (2023) to Robert Grossman’s air brushed petrol hose spelling out the title of the movie Gas. Whereas the title treatment of Oppenheimer was dwarfed by the radioactive image of J. Robert and his atom bomb, the title treatment for the other cinematic sensation of the summer dwarfed its characters. In fact it was just the first letter of that title treatment, the instantly recognizable iconic B of Mattel’s ’80s Barbie logo.Title treatments matter. They set a tone.

James Gunn has become a huge household name in the superhero world. From 2010’s critically panned, cult favorite film, Super, to making the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best trilogy in Guardians of the Galaxy, to now becoming co-ceo of DC Studios and even has a Superman project up his sleeve.
I bet you’re wondering where James honed his craft to become the director he is today. Well, his tenure with Troma Films is well documented but it really all started with his directorial debut, Slither (watch it Here). It’s a film that pays homage to The Blob and feels like a mix of Dawn of the Dead as well as Ridley Scott’s 1979 Sci-Fi epic,...

Writer-director and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn continues rolling the ball with brand new cast additions in Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced and Edi Gathegi for ‘Superman: Legacy.’
Fillion (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”) will play Guy Gardner, one of the figures known as Green Lantern, he will be just one of several people in the new DC Universe to wear the emerald ring that imbues its wearer with the powers of the Green Lantern; Merced (“Dora and the Lost City of Gold”) will play Hawkgirl, one of DC’s oldest superheroes, who first appeared in 1940; and Gathegi (“X-Men: First Class”) will play Mister Terrific aka Michael Holt, an ingenious inventor who operates as Mister Terrific with the multipurpose, mechanical “T-Spheres” he created.
Gunn had already announced that he had cast David Corenswet (“Hollywood”) as the Man of Steel, alongside ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

The film stars Banks, Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick), Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), Luis Gerardo Méndez (Charlie’s Angels), and Nathan Fillion, with the plot taking place in Hollywood, California. Claire Foy made another wonderful return to “The Crown” last year as she featured once more as Queen Elizabeth in the Netflix drama.
Foy shot to stardom for her Emmy-winning turn as the Queen in the first two seasons of “The Crown,” in which she played opposite Matt Smith as Prince Philip. Then, she returned for the fourth season in a guest-starring role in episode eight. That won her another Emmy. Now, she’s back in the fifth season, which takes places in the 1990s.
Imelda Staunton takes over the role of Queen Elizabeth for this season, which depicts several major events in the 1990s including the Queen’s “annus horribilis,” the public divorce of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), and the latter’s interview with “Panorama.” But it’s the return of Foy as a younger version of the Queen that caught fans attention the most.

Jenna Fischer had an unexpected influence on getting her Office co-star one of his most prominent movie roles. And it was all thanks to Fischer’s close connection with current Dcu head James Gunn.

Fischer and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn enjoyed a long six-year marriage together before their divorce in 2007.
Although their marriage didn’t last, Fischer and Gunn remained on pleasant terms afterwards. Fischer would continue her acting success on the popular comedy series The Office. Meanwhile, Gunn would reach greater heights as a filmmaker.
Fischer’s connection with Gunn came in handy for one Office co-star when the director was looking for a lead in the superhero flick Super. Super was Gunn’s 2010 movie about a superhero without any powers operating in a very realistic world. But Gunn...

Longtime James Gunn fans might have felt a twinge of recognition while watching "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" when our heroes don multicolored space suits and traipse around on a giant, fleshy planetoid called the Orgoscope. A living planet isn't exactly new to the MCU (Star-Lord's father was one himself), but the Orgoscope is something different. It's not a celestial body, more an organic one, made up of living tissue. Gross, irritated skin, coarse hair and nasty follicles, that kind of thing.
The Guardians need to infiltrate this organic ... thing ... in order to retrieve information that could very well save Rocket's life. It's a gross job, but a necessary one.
So, when they approached building this particularly disgusting location, you'd think they would have some leverage go a little cartoony with it. I mean, there's not a lot of fleshy, hairy planetoids out there to compare this one to,...

The "Guardians of the Galaxy" films are without a doubt the most aesthetically diverse entries within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Far from being just another superhero saga, the films blend elements of comic-book-style derring-do, soap opera, space opera, action-adventure, and character-based melodrama.
But one particular element that writer/director James Gunn has continually brought to all three "Guardians" films is horror. For those not particularly well-versed in the genre, the horrific aspects of the "Guardians" movies may simply seem "edgy," but to those who are aware of Gunn's horror-soaked past as a filmmaker, these elements stick out like a big, fleshy tentacle.
The latest installment of the saga, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," is no exception to showcasing Gunn's horror roots. On the contrary; it may be the goopiest, most intense, upsetting, and transgressive of all the "Guardians" movies,...

In October of 2022, it was announced that James Gunn -- the director of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films -- would be leaving the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take a prestigious job at Warner Bros. with his creative partner Peter Safran. The two of them have been tasked with inventing an entirely new interconnected cinematic universe of their own based on DC Comics, and Gunn has already announced his work on a Superman film he plans to call "Superman: Legacy." Gunn was already more or less facing the door when he directed "The Suicide Squad," a 2021 film based on DC Comics, and subsequently created a TV series, "Peacemaker," based on it.
"Vol. 3," as a result of Gunn's career shift, possesses an elegiac quality, with many established characters moving on to new careers at the film's conclusion. The mood is melancholic, as if audiences may not ever see these characters again.

When it comes to cameos in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the franchise overlord put the “awesome” in Awesome Mix. We blasted off into the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s cosmos for what’s supposed to be a final hurrah for the team first assembled in 2014, and it was a who’s who of returning favorites and new faces in this new offering.
As with any MCU outing, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was stuffed to bursting with Easter eggs and cameos. Alongside the welcome return of Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar Ogord and Seth Green’s Howard the Duck, there’s even a role for Gunn’s wife and Peacemaker star, Jennifer Holland. Still, there’s a sense that Marvel ultimately wasted one actor that really could’ve had major potential.

It may very well be several years later than planned, but James Gunn has finally delivered his farewell to Star-Lord and the gang with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." That's not to say the franchise won't continue on in some capacity without Gunn behind the camera, but this iteration of the team has said its goodbyes. But not before one heck of a big, jam-packed finale that features many, many of Gunn's frequent collaborators in the mix. There were more than a few bit parts and cameos to keep an eye out for, but there is one from a former "Saturday Night Live" star that was particularly difficult to catch.
In the film's third act, the Guardians are trying to liberate all of the captives being held by the High Evolutionary. This includes lots of children, animals, and all sorts of bizarre creations.

It’s not everyday that a director becomes a CEO, but James Gunn has somehow become the dark avenger that DC needs. Along with his producing partner Peter Safran, Gunn was appointed to the co-ceo position at Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios in October 2022, with the objective of crafting a new strategy for films based on the company’s stable of comic book icons like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.
That’s a massive shift of Hollywood power players and a career boost for anyone, although Gunn evidently doesn’t plan to leave the director’s chair anytime soon. He’s all hands on deck for writing and directing the first film under his and Safran’s regime, “Superman: Legacy.” The forthcoming blockbuster — a reboot for the Superman franchise focusing on the early days of the Kyrptonian’s career — is set for release on June 11, 2025.

That 70s Show is probably at the top of the list of iconic sitcoms of the late ’90s and early 2000s. The show ran for eight seasons and still remains one of the most beloved shows to have aired.
Following a group of teenagers in the ’70s navigating that crazy decade, That ’70s Show made its mark on TV, not only with its great and funny storylines but also with its huge lineup of guest stars. One star appeared for an episode on the show before hitting it big with The Office.

Not every actor hits it big overnight. Some of the A-listers in Hollywood began by taking on smaller roles to build up their resume before becoming the sensations they are today. Jenna Fischer appeared in the 12th episode of the 7th season of That ’70s Show, playing Stacy Wanamaker. Fischer...

We’ve all seen the hackneyed, poorly CG-ed, primetime Asylum special on Syfy version of Stung too many times before. Director Benni Diez, every producer, and each department head go the extra mile to avoid such a fate for their 80s throwback creature feature. That’s what’s so endearing about a 2015 “When Insects Attack” flick with gigantic ideas and the right approach, rooted in buzzworthy practical effects. Stung would play gangbusters along with other abominations of nature like Zombeavers or Eight Legged Freaks (for different reasons), also classics like Them! or Mosquito, and deserves reappraisal for standing out from the swarm.
Screenwriter Adam Aresty hatched the idea while working on an actual catering gig with a wasp problem, which he morphed into the gonzo invasion that takes place. Julia (Jessica Cook) runs a catering company hired for an annual New York garden party hosted by newly widowed Mrs. Perch...

"Cocaine Bear" director Elizabeth Banks has had one wild ride of a career, starring in everything from "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" to "The Hunger Games," but one of her early career standouts is her role as schoolteacher Starla Grant in James Gunn's "Slither." Starla is a small town girl from the fictional hamlet of Wheelsy, South Carolina, pining for her high school sweetheart, local sheriff Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) while married to the only rich guy in town, Grant Grant (Michael Rooker). Things get weird when Grant becomes the host for an alien parasite that wants to take over all of Earth, but it still has feelings for Starla. Like Fay Wray and King Kong, Banks must play beauty to a terrifying beast. "Slither" is one seriously gross movie, with slimy slugs, tentacles, exploding people, and more, but it turns out that was a big part of the fun for Banks.

A new TV Spot for Fast X is here to pump nitrous into Super Bowl Lvii! The Fast X Super Bowl TV Spot arrives shortly after the full trailer, featuring Dominic Toretto and the rest of the Fast family divided by Jason Momoa’s villainous Dante. From what I can gather, Fast X spins out of Fast Five, with Dante being a part of the bank heist executed by Brian (Paul Walker) and Dom (Vin Diesel). Not only were Dante’s plans for the money dashed, but he was also run off the road by Toretto during the escape. Now Dante is seeking revenge and is willing to go after Toretto’s found family to get what he wants.
Louis Leterrier directs Fast X from a screenplay by Justin Lin and Dan Mazeau. Returning castmembers include Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Michelle Rodriguez as Letty, Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto,...

You know those directors you keep rooting for, even though they've yet to really knock one out of the park? That's Elizabeth Banks for me at this stage in her career behind the camera. Her first two times at bat, on "Pitch Perfect 2" and the 2019 "Charlie's Angels," provide fun-if-hollow female empowerment, though that's more to do with their energetic performances than their direction, which tends to be flat and lacking for flair.
Luckily, Banks' next outing as a director, "Cocaine Bear," is the perfect chance for her to turn on the juice and see what shakes loose. Will it be the next "Snakes on a Plane," i.e. a very R-rated comedy-thriller that couldn't quite live up to its outlandish title and capitalize on the sheer hype it generated among the Very Online demographic, or will it be a riotous good time that doubles as a searing indictment of...
