Netflix has made one massive change in the K-drama industry. Up until a few years ago, it was unheard of for a K-drama to have more than one season. However, with the influx of Western media patterns (not only in terms of multiple seasons but in the content the industry produces too), there’s been many popular shows with multiple seasons. Even Squid Game returns this December after a long wait. However, what’s odd is that the high-school drama Hierarchy is meant to be a limited series, so why then does it have a post-credit scene, and why does it set us up for another season? So, though there’s no announcement for a second season as of now, here’s my meager attempt at breaking down all the hints the showmakers attempt to give us about another season. Personally, I’ll be happy if the show is one-and-done...

Netflix isn't just known for cancellations, especially in recent years.
It's also the reigning champion of spontaneous cancellations, catching fans off-guard and delivering some real gut punches.
Some refer to it as a cancellation loop, and it's making viewers wary of investing their time and subscription money on new and exciting shows.
Netflix is dealing with the self-inflicted wounds that come with popular shows, forcing them into an endless loop that's not based on reality but perception.
It's also changing successful, tried-and-true storytelling formulas and driving creators to other streaming platforms so their product stands a chance at longevity.
To be fair, this is not unique to Netflix, especially as other streaming platforms continue to grow.
But Netflix is the Og with the most shows and brand recognition.
Because of that, the damage to the brand from especially infamous cancellations feels more extensive to fans.

The streaming giant’s massive May 23 data trove for the second half of 2023 includes almost 16,000 series, movies and specials, which accounted for about 90 billion hours of viewing worldwide. The shows and movies below are … not a big part of that number, to say the least. Rather, they’re some of the higher-profile projects that, relatively speaking, almost no one watched. (For comparison’s sake, some of the biggest titles are also included).

The Acolyte is off to a promising start on Disney+.
The new Star Wars series launched on June 4 with two episodes, generating 4.8M views in its first day on the streamer. That makes it the biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year.
Disney+ doesn’t generally release viewership data for series after just one day of streaming. In August, the streamer said that Ahsoka drew 14M views in its first 5 days. As of now, The Acolyte is on track to zoom right past that benchmark, but it’ll need to sustain similar viewership over the weekend in order to do so.
The streamer can be a bit inconsistent with its viewership data, generally. When Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted in December, Disney+ announced that series’ six-day viewership tally. However, releasing the viewership for one single day of viewing does indicate that Disney+ feels quite confident in The Acolyte‘s ability to keep performing well.

Daniel Fienberg The shift to a backloaded schedule built around a May 31 deadline for Emmy consideration has drained some of the surprise from the spring TV calendar. Viewers are growing accustomed to a glut of high-profile limited series and prestige returning shows from March to May, with the biggest titles and stars creating their own gravitational fields of self-perpetuating coverage.
Luckily, though, there’s still room for discovery. With its literary pedigree and a budget that burst off the screen in the form of astonishing evocations of 17th century Japan, FX’s Shogun had “prestige” written all over it. Yet the care taken by creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to deliver this story without having it reek of appropriation and voyeurism was evident throughout. Still, who would have guessed that Shogun would be so successful that the network would want to push forward with future seasons beyond James Clavell’s novel,...

The Acolyte: Osha's Tattoo Draws Hilarious Comparison to BTS Logo - Main Image
The Acolyte’s first two episodes are out now, and they have elicited lots of reaction from fans. One thing that many noticed is how The Acolyte’s Osha has a tattoo that looks very much like the BTS logo.
Even though BTS is one of the biggest music groups in the world, their songs aren’t exactly wide-reaching to reach a galaxy far, far away.
Still, the fact that Osha’s tattoo looks almost exactly like the group’s logo leads many fans to believe that this is a cheeky reference from the show’s staff.
Spoiler Warning: This article includes spoilers for The Acolyte, so proceed with caution.

This article from the Disney+ series The Acolyte (2024) Season 1 Episode 1, “Pilot” contains significant spoilers.
The Acolyte’s opening infographic reads: “A hundred years before the rise of the Empire, it is a time of peace. The Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic have prospered for centuries without war. But in the dark corners of the galaxy, a powerful few learn to use the Force in secret. One of them, a long assassin, risks discovery to seek revenge.”
The opening scenes of the pilot of The Acolyte are exciting. They feature an action-packed hand-to-hand combat scene between a mysterious young woman with cat-like eyes and a Jedi who looks just like Trinity from The Matrix. Her name is Indara (Carrie-Ann Moss), and she is about to die saving another.

This Star Wars: The Acolyte review contains spoilers.
One of The Acolyte’s most enticing selling points is that it’s the first live-action Star Wars show that exists outside of the Skywalker Saga, set 100 years before The Phantom Menace. This might lead one to believe that the show would be a refreshing change of pace or tone for the franchise, but unfortunately, it actually looks, sounds, and feels a lot like the other Star Wars shows, at least in its first two episodes.
This isn’t an inherently bad thing, of course, as most of the other Star Wars live-action shows have been quite good. The Acolyte has a lot going for it, with a great premise, an intriguing central mystery that reveals itself in captivating fashion, and some rock-solid performances. But it feels like there was a missed opportunity here to lean into the aspects of the story...

When Lee Jung-jae’s previous show Squid Game became a global phenomenon, Star Wars: The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland was among the many viewers who helped make it Netflix’s most popular non-English speaking series. On top of that, she was also writing The Acolyte’s High Republic Jedi character of Master Sol at the same time as her binge, and that’s when it dawned on the Russian Doll creator that the South Korean actor would be a perfect fit for the honorable Jedi. Sol would then go on to serve as a central figure of Headland’s mystery-thriller series that takes place a century before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999).
However, Lee — whom his collaborators affectionately refer to as “J.J.” — remains rather shocked that his Squid Game character, Seong Gi-hun, inspired Headland to write Sol with him in mind.

Amandla Stenberg is Osha and Mae
Amandla Stenberg is playing twin sisters Osha and Mae who were “separated by tragedy when they were very young,” according to the actor. Osha was once the promising Padawan of the Jedi Sol before leaving the order due to “internal turmoil” over her connection to the force.

Recent years have seen all manner of Star Wars books and comics set in The High Republic Era released by Lucasfilm. If you have neither the time nor the inclination to devote countless hours to those, you may be concerned about how well you’ll grasp The Acolyte. Thankfully, the latest Star Wars TV series is arguably the most new viewer-friendly effort from the studio since The Mandalorian’s debut season. The result is a gripping new addition to the franchise which, based on the four episodes we’ve seen, will keep you hooked from start to finish.
Familiar yet different, The High Republic Era takes place at a time when the Jedi Order was at the height of its power with few significant threats to worry about. That changes with the appearance of an "acolyte" who has been tasked with killing four members of the Order at the behest...

Total number of episodes: 8 Episodes watched for review: 2
Created by Leslye Headland (the TV talent behind Russian Doll), The Acolyte is an eight part Star Wars TV series that marks a significant break from the spin-off material we’ve seen so far. For one thing, it’s set 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, meaning that slavish fan service can (hopefully) be kept to a minimum. And for another, the fact that the series is essentially positioned as a murder mystery shows a welcome attempt to play around with genre in the Star Wars universe, something that has arguably been a long time coming.
The show opens in style, with Carrie-Anne Moss’ Jedi Master Indara facing off against a would-be assassin who turns out to be equally proficient in the ways of the Force.

Here at FandomWire, we review the new Disney+ Star Wars saga The Acolyte. This article does not contain significant spoilers.
While many have openly complained that Disney has ruined Star Wars and Marvel franchises with event-streaming series, I’m not one of them as of late. In fact, with the magnetic and compelling Ahsoka that came out last year, they are on a roll with The Acolyte, a stunning and captivating new chapter in the Star Wars saga.
By the time the fourth episode brings the rising action that wrenches up the tension and suspense to new levels, you have numerous badass lightsaber battles, galactic battlefields, a jaw-dropping introduction to one of the series’ best new villains, and, of course, who doesn’t love a Jedi Wookiee who wields the Force like the back of their scruffy hands?
Not to mention the birth of female action heroines for which Disney does not get enough credit.

A girl walks into a bar — stop us if you’ve heard this one. Picking her way through tables crowded with a menagerie of alien patrons, she squares up to a figure in Jedi robes. The resulting fracas is something you definitely won’t be familiar with — at least not from Star Wars. A whirlwind of wuxia-inspired fists and feet, the series prologue has the flavour of Hong Kong action cinema, but with a distinctly Star Wars twist — punches and parries augmented with Jedi abilities that block and throw with unseen power. It’s an arresting display of precision-choreographed Force-fu that unfolds (almost) without either party reaching for a lightsaber. As openers go, this seizes you by the throat like a Force choke — a clear statement of intent from showrunner Leslye Headland.

Since Disney revived “Star Wars” in 2015 with J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens,” the strongest entries in the franchise have had one trait in common. Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi” and Tony Gilroy’s “Andor” both opted to take the franchise in bold new directions, opening up exciting new possibilities for what a “Star Wars” story could be. “The Last Jedi” steered the core narrative away from the Skywalker family, implying that anyone could become a Jedi and, therefore, a hero. “Andor” used familiar settings as the backdrop for an adult political drama about rebellion and imperial administration, rejecting heroes entirely in favor of the individuals who make up mass movements. Fans may not always have seen them as such — “The Last Jedi” faced an infamous fan backlash, while “Andor” Season 1 paled in viewership to the likes of “The Mandalorian” — but these projects offered a lifeline to a saga...

Remember when the whole world went crazy over South Korea's Squid Game? Forget about it. Today, everyone is watching The 8 Show, eight episodes of which were released on Netflix on May 17.
The creators of Squid Game explained the phenomenon of their show simply: people like to watch desperate adults risking their lives to compete in children's games.
Netflix, which has shown Squid Game to the whole world, has understood that there is a lot of money to be made in K-dramas. Since 2016, the platform has been investing in the creation of original content in South Korea, and it has borne fruit. In 2020, the revenue of Netflix's South Korean division amounted to $356 million – 123.5% more than the previous year.
Therefore, it's not surprising that Korean dramas are regularly released on the platform, and the latest release is even too similar to Netflix's biggest hit ever.

The popularity of K-dramas continues to run wild in the English-speaking world.
Earlier today Deadline analysis pointed to the continued interest in TV content from the country and now international K-content streamer Kocowa+ has revealed the UK and countries such as Australia are set to rank among its best performing territories after launching across Europe and Oceania in April.
After expanding into nearly 40 territories, Kocowa+ has been focusing on bolstering its localization capabilities, as well as expanding the number of languages for which it can offer subtitles. In an interview with Deadline, Kocowa CEO Park Kun-hee said that English-speaking usage is already booming as the streamer’s top international segment. Spain and Portugal come in next among the best-performing countries for the service, he added.
Developing capabilities for French subtitles is a priority. “French is the highest priority because when I look at the purchasing power in France, it is much higher than other countries,...

Kathleen Kennedy is familiar with the difficulties that women often face in the male-dominated Star Wars world.
In a brief conversation with The New York Times, Kennedy opened up about Leslye Headland’s upcoming series The Acolyte, and how she has faced misogyny as the head of Lucasfilm.
“Operating within these giant franchises now, with social media and the level of expectation — it’s terrifying,” she told the publication. “I think Leslye has struggled a little bit with it. I think a lot of the women who step into Star Wars struggle with this a bit more. Because of the fan base being so male-dominated, they sometimes get attacked in ways that can be quite personal.”
Kennedy’s comments come ahead of the release of the Disney+ series, which some in the fandom are already slamming for its inclusion of several women and people of color in powerful positions.

The stakes in South Korea’s Pyramid Game may not be quite as high as in the infamous Squid Game, but try telling that to the tormented adolescents subjected to shame and violent bullying in this gripping though seriously bloated melodrama, based on a webtoon. “School is a smaller version of society” is an oft-repeated theme, a lesson soon learned by spunky Su-ji (Kim Ji-yeon), the new arrival in a corporate-funded girls’ high school who tells herself, “You need to figure out who’ll be beneficial to you or not, and find your place among all the kids, so that you don’t crash land at the top or the bottom.” Unfortunately, she gets seated next to a gentle outcast, the sullen and remote Ja-eun (Ryu Da-in), in a classroom that inexplicably is located in its own building, away from prying eyes as a savage game of toxic peer pressure is enacted.

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

Tko Holdings has merged the live event groups of its two combat sports leagues into the “Tko Live Events Strategy Team.”
Is the UFC about to follow WWE to a new streaming home? The latest move by the parent company of the two combat sports promotions leaves the door open for that particular question. Tko Holdings, which operates UFC and WWE, has decided to combine the live events groups of both into a single entity, which will be called the “Tko Live Events Strategy Team.” This will allow the company to more closely coordinate events from WWE and UFC, but it could also presage a move to Netflix for UFC events, as the world’s largest streamer recently struck a deal with WWE to air live episodes of “Raw” each week.
Key Details: WWE and UFC events will likely air on the same weekends thanks to the combination of the two live events groups.

June is busting out all over, especially on streaming. Whether it’s hiding from the heat or taking a break from school and work, Disney+ and Hulu are here to satisfying your mid-year entertainment needs.
Disney+ will premiere the first new live-action Star Wars since 2023’s middling to “The Mandalorian” Season 3 and “Ahsoka” with “The Acolyte,” starring “Squid Game” breakout Lee Jung-jae. The series is set before the events of “The Phantom Menace” with a familiar master-padawan storyline but new characters and a new era where that dynamic unfolds. The streamer will also premiere various new options for kids and family-friendly programming, as well as new episodes of “Doctor Who” starring Ncuti Gatwa.
On Hulu, FX comes in hot for the summer, along with an adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams’s “Queenie,” the brat-pack documentary “Brats,” and yes — more “Love Island.” The TV and film library continues to shift with new and expiring titles,...

Dystopian thriller “Leave the World Behind” was the most-watched film — and title overall — on Netflix globally in the second half of 2023, while anime-inspired live action series “One Piece” led on the TV side among individual series seasons.
The data comes from Netflix’s second edition of “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” reflecting viewership on the streamer from July-December 2023 covering 99% of all viewing on Netflix. Subscribers across the world watched about 90 billion hours of Netflix in the second half of 2023, compared with 93 billion hours in the first half of the year.

Actor Lee Jung-jae will attend the Monte-Carlo Television Festival next month for the French press launch of Lucasfilm’s latest live-action series “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” which streams on Disney+. In the show, Lee plays a Jedi Master.
It was his role in the globally successful Netflix series “Squid Game” that first catapulted Lee’s career to an international level. Starring as Seong Gi-hun (No. 456), a financially struggling father who participates in a deadly survival game, his performance earned him the Emmy Award for best actor in a drama series, a first for a non-English speaking actor.
This tremendous success significantly elevated the career of Lee, who is now considered by many as the international standard-bearer for a highly creative and avant-garde Korean culture.
In “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” an investigation into a series of shocking crimes pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee) against a dangerous warrior from his past.

“Bridgerton” Season 3 is off to a steamy hot start.
The third season of the Shondaland period drama drew 45.1 million views over its first four days of availability, according to Netflix, easily finishing first on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list. Take that, Tom Brady roast.
It was the biggest week — by quite a bit — for any series on Netflix since the streamer changed its core metric from hours viewed to views in mid-June 2023.
The first four “Bridgerton” Season 3 episodes reached number 1 in 78 countries and the Top 10 in 92, Netflix said. The next four episodes premiere on June 13; try not to obsess over the big cliffhanger between now and then.
The third season of “Bridgerton” also brought the first two back to (some semblance of) their former glory. “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 both returned to Netflix’s Top 10 TV (in any language) list in the week ahead of Season 3. They did even better during Season 3’s premiere week.

If you’re not caught up on your peak TV viewing, consider this your spoiler warning. Four months have passed since Jennifer Coolidge bagged her second consecutive Emmy for “The White Lotus” and thus became the eighth drama or comedy series regular honored by the TV academy for a season in which her character died. Emmy nominations of this kind have become quite common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2024 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will be added to the list.
The current consensus among more than 2,400 Gold Derby users is that five continuing series performers whose characters perished within the past year will receive Emmy nominations, while a few others have outside shots at recognition. This does not include characters like Anakin Skywalker who died before their shows’ latest seasons began but appear as ghosts or in flashbacks. Undead characters like most of...

You can’t say the title Squid Game out loud in a public place without seeing a couple of faces light up and another few cringe. The South Korean TV show took over the world in a matter of days after its release, becoming a massive cultural phenomenon — but three years later, there’s still no sequel, and the public is growing frustrated.
Fortunately, Netflix just released another TV show with a similar idea: it also comes from South Korea, has a unique twist to it, and might just become the next big thing.
Welcome to a New Money Game
To say that Squid Game popularized money games would be an understatement. They’re fun and engaging and, unlike in the iconic series, don’t typically end in bloodshed. A fun concept to play around with, and an uncharted potential for social commentary in the world of advanced capitalism. What’s not to love here?...

Squid Game fans eager to see the Netflix hit’s second season — due for release sometime in 2024 — can now pass the time with a similar series. The 8 Show, another South Korean thriller, hit Netflix on Friday. And though Squid Game is a hard act to follow, The 8 Show might just become viewers’ next obsession — and here’s why. 1. It’s another hard-hitting K-drama. Directed and written by Han Jae-rim, The 8 Show is “a slow-burn series that reveals just how vulnerable humans are to the darkest sides of a hyper-capitalist society,” Netflix’s Tudum blog reveals. Sound familiar, Squid Game fans? 2. It also follows money-hungry contestants navigating a dangerous game. The 8 Show’s synopsis lays out the new series’ Squid Game-like premise: “Eight individuals trapped in a mysterious 8-story building participate in a tempting but dangerous game show where they earn money as time passes.” Netflix 3. It’s a “uniform” series.

Yuto Suzuki’s Sakamoto Days is one manga fans have been following for a long time now. There are many different shonen works that take on the slice-of-life tropes on the side. Spy x Family, The Way of the Househusband, and many other anime and manga follow such patterns to add a mix of different genres in an otherwise already explored trope.
Sakamoto Days
Sakamoto Days does the same. It takes a retired hitman wanting to live a normal life and pulls him back into a world filled with action. Needless to say, there were many fans following the manga and more who were awaiting a possible anime adaptation. By the looks of it, the wait may not be for long. However, that is not to say that everything might be going smoothly.

There are plenty of reality television shows that Netflix produces and they are going global by coming out with reality television shows in many languages. Amidst all of this is Netflix Korea, which is churning out many shows in the reality television genre. Squid Game is the most popular of the lot, and that drew the attention of the world towards Korean culture rather than the world-class cinema the makers of the country churned out. Single’s Inferno, Physical: 100, Squid Game: The Challenge, The Devil’s Plan, Love after Divorce, and Love Naggers are some of the Netflix Korean reality shows. While some are good, others are abysmal. Clubbing elements of all these reality television shows together, Han Jae-rim brings The 8 Show, a brand new Netflix Korea original show that was released on May 17, 2024.
The 8 Show is an eight-episode-long show with a runtime of 35 to 40 minutes each episode.

“Shōgun” is officially in the drama race for the Primetime Emmys.
FX has confirmed that the once limited or anthology series heavyweight has been officially submitted and accepted in the drama categories, where it will compete against Netflix’s “The Crown,” Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Prime Video’s “Fallout.” In addition, the network has shared exclusively with Variety the complete list of 40 Emmy submissions, which includes six submissions for directing, four for writing, and two eligible guest actors. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” currently holds the record for most nominations in a single year with 32. Could FX break the monumental record?
Following the announcement that FX, Hulu, and the estate of James Clavell — who authored the novel — are working on developing more seasons of the critically acclaimed series, “Shōgun” is now officially eligible to compete in the drama races after being commissioned as limited. The move puts the...
