Of all the contenders to play James Bond next, many would argue that Tom Hardy is effortlessly one of the best choices ever. His wit, charming demeanor, and overall personality make him stand out among everyone else and seem like the perfect choice to embody the peerless spy. Plus, he’s British, so that checks out another box of requirements for the character.

However, even after all these similarities, one thing still stands in the way between everyone deeming him to be the perfect choice for this role. This one thing is his 12-year-old $156 million box office disaster with Chris Pine, This Means War, which featured him as a CIA agent but failed to garner many appraisals for Hardy in the role because of his lackluster performance.

There's a case to be made that Chris Hemsworth is the most talented of the Marvel Studios Chrises. He's got great comedic energy and leaned into that with his later performances as Thor (even if he admittedly went overboard in "Thor: Love and Thunder"). His vengeance-driven God of Thunder is the highlight of "Infinity War" too.
He's also making interesting career choices. I'm a Captain America fan, but Chris Evans has not challenged himself as an actor since "Snowpiercer." ("Knives Out" was just him dusting off his pre-Cap screen persona of a cocky a-hole.) Chris Pratt has waltzed his way into being Hollywood's leading voice actor despite his anonymous performances in "The Super Mario Brothers" and soon, "The Garfield Movie." Hemsworth takes paycheck gigs (see: "Extraction" and his voice acting turn as young Optimus Prime in "Transformers: One" this coming Summer), but he shows ambition too. It has been reported by E News! that Aaron Taylor-Johnson has not been offered the role of James Bond. Consequently, it appears that he is not in the frontrunner position, and the search for 007 continues. So, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson now have to continue searching for the right actor.
Daniel Craig as James Bond in a still from Spectre
There are plenty of actors vying for the coveted role, but finding the perfect fit for 007 won’t be easy. James Bond is more than just a character — he’s a cultural icon.
Over the years, various actors have put their own spin on the role, but they all need to capture the essence of Bond as established in decades of books and films.

Universal Pictures wanted a car chase spectacle that would appeal to fans of their Fast & Furious franchise. What director Nicolas Winding Refn and star Ryan Gosling delivered was something far from that. They made a fairy tale-inspired arthouse thriller with ‘80s vibes, a deliberate pace, and bursts of graphic violence. The film was the 2011 release Drive (watch it Here) – and it’s time for it to be Revisited.
Drive started as a crime novel that was written by James Sallis and published in 2005. If you’re familiar with the film adaptation, you’ll recognize characters and story elements in the book. It follows a man known only as Driver. He’s a stunt performer by day. At night he...

David Fincher’s new film, The Killer, has now been released, and many are glowing about its slick filmmaking. Michael Fassbender stars as a contract killer who is particular in his ways and the intricate procedure in which he goes about his job. While many may feel the plot itself is simplistic, the Netflix film features Fincher’s distinct style. In a review from our own Chris Bumbray, he expresses, “As usual for a Fincher movie, The Killer is impeccably crafted, running a lean two hours and sporting Fincher’s signature cold, dark look via Dp Erik Messerschmidt. The score by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor is more sparse than usual, and the sound design is intricate enough that if you get a chance to see this theatrically, you should.”
Among the fans of the film, director Guillermo Del Toro is someone in particular who the movie really won over.

Tom Hardy's first major film gag was playing one of the many faceless soldiers in Ridley Scott's overwrought war thriller "Black Hawk Down" in 2001. The actor was only about 24 at the time and had just come off of the acclaimed HBO WWII miniseries "Band of Brothers." His second feature was also a war drama called "Deserter," a low-profile project that was released in 2002. Casting directors seemed to like the way Hardy looked in uniform.
Also in 2002, however, Hardy was offered a higher-profile role -- and a very challenging one -- when he was cast as Shinzon in Stuard Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis." Shinzon was a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who had been raised in a Reman mining colony, and who would rise up against his Roluman oppressors and attempt to take control of the Romulan Star Empire. Shinzon was essentially a younger, more aggressive version of Picard,...

Patrick Stewart shares blunt thoughts on 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis” in his new memoir, “Making It So” (via Insider). The film, the fourth and final “Star Trek” feature to star “The Next Generation” cast, featured one of Stewart’s least memorable outings as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, at least according to the actor himself.
“‘Nemesis,’ which came out in 2002, was particularly weak,” Stewart writes. “I didn’t have a single exciting scene to play, and the actor who portrayed the movie’s villain, Shinzon, was an odd, solitary young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy.”
Hardy was not a household name when he played the villain in “Star Trek: Nemesis,” and Stewart predicted his co-star never would be due to how shut off he was from the rest of the cast during the making of the movie.
“Tom wouldn’t engage with any of us on a social level,...

Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn is infamous for being one of the most provocative filmmakers working today, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that several of his favorite films are some of the most disturbing movies ever made. Over the years, Refn has given wide-ranging interviews that don’t hide the influences that have driven his feature films, from “Pusher” to “Bronson,” “Drive” to “Only God Forgives,” “The Neon Demon” and more.
Born in 1970, Refn made his directorial debut at 26 years old with “Pusher,” a violent crime thriller that introduced the cinematic world to the talents of Mads Mikkelsen. Two sequels followed in 2004 and 2005, and 1999’s “Bleeder” was another Copenhagen-set crime drama starring Mikkelsen. His initial excursions into English-language filmmaking, including the John Turturro-led “Fear X,” the Tom Hardy vehicle “Bronson,” and another Mikkelsen film “Valhalla Rising,” were all moderately well received, although most failed to entirely take...

Sylvester Stallone starred in a few iconic action movies during his prime years. And the actor felt his era of blockbusters had something that current franchises like Marvel lacked.

Stallone has been mostly unimpressed with modern day action films, especially when the vast majority of them have been superheroes. The actor felt like he came from a time where action films were a bit more grounded, focusing on character work as much as spectacle.
Many of Stallone’s past action movies also dealt with real backgrounds and practical effects that might have added authenticity to his films. Meanwhile, he believed that the superhero movies of today relief too much on CGI.

The “Only God Forgives” writer-director revisits the legacy of the controversial 2013 film in honor of its 10-year anniversary. How do you follow up on the greatest superhero movie ever made? This was the dilemma director Christopher Nolan was faced with when he made his third and final installment in his Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. While Batman Begins had been a solid critical and commercial hit, The Dark Knight was a cultural phenomenon, with many proclaiming it the greatest superhero movie ever made, a status it’s managed to hold on to fifteen years later.
However, Nolan faced many issues, the most notable of which was that his iconic Joker, Heath Ledger, had tragically passed away before The Dark Knight hit theaters. Recasting the role was a non-starter, so they would have to find another equally impressive villain. They ended up settling on Bane, who would be played by Tom Hardy, whose star was on the rise following his acclaimed turn in the Nicolas Winding Refn film,...

Copenhagen Cowboy is a noir-thriller series written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, starring Angela Bundalovic, Zlatko Buric, and Lola Corfixen.

Yes, filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn has returned to his native Denmark for his newest project, "Copenhagen Cowboy." His second venture into the world of streaming after the 2019 crime drama "Too Old to Die Young" but his first with Netflix, "Copenhagen Cowboy" is a six-part tale centered on a mostly-silent, enigmatic lead prone to shocking outbursts of violence as they undertake a dangerous odyssey across a neon-soaked criminal underworld. Nicolas Winding Refn is bringing his signature stylized violence to Netflix. The “Drive” director’s upcoming miniseries “Copenhagen Cowboy” is set to release January 5. In addition, a trailer for the series dropped on Wednesday, and you can watch it below.
The six-episode series stars Angela Bundalovic as Miu, an enigmatic young woman who has devoted her life to serving a shadowy criminal organization. Returning to her hometown of Copenhagen, Miu goes on a surreal, supernatural odyssey through the seedy underbelly of the city, in an attempt to track down and defeat her archenemy Rakel (Lola Corfixen). Based on the trailer, Miu’s journey carries all the hallmarks of Winding Refn’s filmmaking, with neon lighting, a synthwave soundtrack, and tons of bloodshed.
“I don’t know who you are, or know what you’re capable of, but people around you die,” a character narrates about Miu in the trailer. “Either that,...

Venom 3 is putting one of its own behind the camera. Screenwriter Kelly Marcel will direct the upcoming third installment starring Tom Hardy, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Marcel has worked closely with Tom Hardy dating back to the days of his 2008 indie film Bronson, and was among the writers on Venom (2018) before getting solo screenplay credit on Sony and Columbia’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) after developing the story with Hardy. This will mark her directorial debut.
She is also writing the script for the third Venom, from a story by herself and Hardy. The duo will produce, along with Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker. Deadline first reported the news.

As you may be aware, we here at Nerdly love to cover the more independent projects out there. This has led us to some truly great undiscovered gems over the years. The only thing we love more than pushing these projects is seeing the growth in the directors and actors we have come across. We know it’s a hard slog at times in the filmmaking game, so to see creators not just persevere but keep getting infinitely better, honing their craft and putting out great content for your eyeballs, well that makes it all the sweeter and more importantly our jobs easier.
Here we have the writing and directing duo of Richard Oakes and Adam Leader. Previously these boys released Hosts, which we covered quite a bit here on the site.

In an era of Hollywood less interested in movie star power, the most interesting performers these days tend to be character actors. Enter Tom Hardy, an English actor with a face chiseled and handsome enough to pass as the leading man, but looks are not very high on his list of priorities. From his delightfully incoherent take on Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises" to his twitchy, silent Max Rockatansky in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and even his leading role in the "Venom" comic book films, his chaotic, kinetic energy is his number one quality.
Recently, one can find Hardy on "Peaky Blinders" as a Jewish gang leader, or in Josh Trank's 2020 film "Capone," in which he portrayed an aging and withered Al Capone, one of the most famous criminals in American history. Both are gangster characters in a long career of playing mobsters, hitmen, and hardened criminals. While...

Born Michael Peterson, the British criminal best known as Charles Bronson -- and now going by Charles Salvador -- was once called the most violent prisoner in Britain by the Guardian. Salvador has notoriously spent most of his life in prison, having been convicted for, in the words of the BBC, armed robbery, wounding, wounding with intent, criminal damage, grievous bodily harm, false imprisonment, blackmail, and threatening to kill. Salvador has a penchant for getting into violent fistfights in prison, and was given his movie-star nickname from his brief days on the outside as a professional bare-knuckle fighter. Salvador was also known for his outsized personality, amusing theatrics, and unusual hobbies; he wrote books about how to stay fit while in solitary confinement, and he is a self-styled painter and artist.

Tom Hardy is no stranger to putting his body through workout hell in order to bulk up for a role. His performances in "Warrior" and "Bronson" are testaments to that, as they are to his ability to wield the physicality in mesmerizing ways in action scenes. It's one of the reasons why his portrayal of Batman's nemesis Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises" is both menacing and magnetic — not to mention the carefully crafted voice Hardy created for the part.
Hardy forced his body into a demanding transformation to play the typically jacked-up villain with massive arms. While following a brutal exercise routine to put on as much muscle as possible, he also ate as much as he could to put on the weight necessary to make him look larger than costar Christian Bale, who is actually taller than Hardy. Luckily Christopher Nolan and the crew behind "The Dark Knight Rises...

In 2008, the second season of “30 Rock” tied the record set by “The Cosby Show” in 1986 for earning most same-year comedic performing bids at nine. One year later, the Tina Fey-led sitcom raised that bar to its current position of 10, which no traditional comedy series was able to touch until “Ted Lasso” did so this year. Half of the 10 actors nominated for the Apple TV+ show’s second season were also recognized for its first year, while four of the remaining five are total Emmy newcomers. Included in the latter subset is guest competitor James Lance, whose first TV academy notice has come three decades into his career.
To date, Lance has appeared as Independent reporter Trent Crimm in 10 “Ted Lasso” episodes. He is presently nominated in the Best Comedy Guest Actor category for his performance in the second season finale, entitled “Inverting the Pyramid of Success.” Set after...

In the 10 years since the release of Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive,” the lives of two key figures behind its pivotal soundtrack, Johnny Jewel and Cliff Martinez, have changed for the better, thanks to the film.
“Before ‘Drive’ coming out, I was standing by the freeway with a cardboard sign that said, ‘Will score for food,’” jokes “Drive’s” composer, Martinez, a sometimes drummer in Red Hot Chili Peppers, and one of Steven Soderbergh’s go-to composers. “I wasn’t exactly struggling, but I would go for months without work. My popularity ebbs and flows, but for the most part, I’m much more popular than I was before 2011.”
“For those of us in the underground, ‘Drive’ was huge,” says Jewel, who has two key songs on the soundtrack — “Tick of the Clock,” with his former band, the Chromatics, and “Under Your Spell” with his other band, Desire.

In the 1950s, the word “mumbling” got stuck to the name Marlon Brando, and there were several reasons for that. Brando, starting with his first film, “The Men” (1950), brought a new mode of naturalistic acting to Hollywood that was so revolutionary it would change not just movies but the world. Those who were used to hearing every actor in a movie enunciate their dialogue as if it were the King’s English couldn’t understand — literally — what Brando was saying.
Beyond that, Brando played the kinds of characters who’d never been front and center in a Hollywood movie before — most famously Terry Malloy, the inarticulate working-class loser-brute of “On the Waterfront.” This wasn’t just an acting revolution; it was a who-gets-to-be-a-hero-in-America revolution. And the everyday music of Brando’s magnetically low-key, throwaway speech was part of it. The new heroes were people who couldn’t fully express who they were,...

"The only thing that really matters... is how a man treats his family." Vertical has unveiled the first official trailer for Capone, formerly known as Fonzo, the new Al Capone project from filmmaker Josh Trank (of Chronicle and Fantastic Four). The film finds and follows Alphonse Capone after 10 years in prison, at age 47, when he starts suffering from dementia and comes to be haunted by his violent past. Tom Hardy stars as Capone, struggling with harrowing memories. "As he spends his final year surrounded by family with the FBI lying in wait, this ailing patriarch struggles to place the memory of the location of millions of dollars he hid away on his property." The cast includes Linda Cardellini, Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, Noel Fisher, Jack Lowden, and Al Sapienza. This reminds me a bit of one of Hardy's other films, Bronson, also about a crazy guy from prison. Al's make-up is seriously sketchy,...

When Australian robber Ned Kelly was executed in 1880 at the age of 25, his last words were reported as “Such is life.” Director Justin Kurzel’s sizzling, violent epic “True History of the Kelly Gang” questions that myth, suggesting that the legendary Australian criminal would never shrug off his fate, since he was a fighter right through to the bitter end. The movie hovers in a curious paradox, coming across as both operatic tribute and horrific condemnation, but it’s never less than a nasty crime drama with plenty of grimy characters to keep the stakes compelling throughout.
Working with his regular screenwriter Shaun Grant, Kurzel has constructed a taut and vivid overview of Kelly’s harsh upbringing and how it transformed him into a vengeful monstrosity, played by George Mackay as Mick Jagger by way of Freddy Krueger. The movie’s jagged narrative and expressionistic asides minimize Kelly’s robberies...

The era of the modern horse film gallops on, with no signs of slowing down. With Chloé Zhao’s “The Rider” recently named Film Comment’s top movie of the year and Andrew Haigh’s “Lean on Pete” landing on more than a few critics’ end-of-year lists, it seems the special bond between a man and his horse continues to captivate indie filmmakers.
