Jon Ronson has forged a second series of his Things Fell Apart podcast, this time around focusing on conspiracy theories in the Covid 19 era.
The second season of the hit BBC Sounds show will launch next week, with eight stories focusing on “new battle lines in the culture wars which ignited during lockdown.”
“From covid conspiracies and Antifa hysteria, to racial and gender identity politics, free speech and protests against lockdown that spiralled out of control,” adds the logline.
Ronson said: “Recent months have shown that we’re living in post truth times where all sorts of lies are allowed to flourish for all sorts of reasons, and many people are guilty of that from across the political spectrum. What the podcast is about in the end is that we have to hold on to truth like driftwood or else we’ll drown.”

Exclusive: Carol Howe, a high-society debutante who joined the neo-Nazi movement responsible for the Oklahoma City bombings in 1995 and then became a government informant, is the subject of a new podcast from Jon Ronson.
Ronson, a journalist and filmmaker who wrote The Men Who Stare At Goats, which was turned into the George Clooney-fronted movie, has created The Debutante for Audible.
The Amazon-owned audio platform will launch the series on April 13.
It uses rare court tapes, diary entries, undercover Atf surveillance audio, and interviews, to explore the mystery of Howe, a charismatic, wealthy former debutante turned white supremacist spokeswoman turned undercover informant.
In 1995, Carol was spying on Oklahoma’s neo-Nazis for the government just when Timothy McVeigh, inspired by what happened at Waco, blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people.

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.

Harris will lead the company’s emerging production and development arm, reporting to Vertical Partners Peter Jarowey and Rich Goldberg beginning March 14. George Clooney’s career has evolved from a hot handyman dripping with charisma to a, well, hot Oscar-winning actor and producer dripping with charisma. But his resume isn’t all that’s changed in the past four decades – his hair has, too. Here is the long and short of it.
As a kid growing up in Kentucky, little George Timothy Clooney sported shaggy brown bangs. The hair doesn’t scream “George Clooney,” but the eyes and grin sure do.
1985 • Well into building an acting career, Clooney sat for a typical Hollywood-style photoshoot showing off his gorgeous wavy locks and fashionable (at the time) mullet.
1988 • A gig on “Roseanne” brought Clooney some notoriety… for both him and that fabulous head of hair.
1989 • Clooney hit the road to promote his new film “Red Surf” (notice the poster behind him) playing a — you guessed it — surfer who enjoys the lifestyle drug money brings him.

After that comes Solos. This intriguing anthology has one hell of a cast including Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Constance Wu, and more. The project will premiere on May 21 and each of its seven episodes promises to be quite different.

And now, we come to that time of the month when we salute those Netflix titles that will soon be departing the service, moving on to other distributive solutions in that great streaming place in the sky. Or in other words, here are the movies/TV shows leaving Netflix in the month of March. I’ll even be providing some commentary as we go through them (wanted or not).
Leaving March 3rd, we have Black Panther and The Men Who Stare at Goats. I know what the former is, but what on earth is the latter? Actually, I don’t want to know.
Leaving March 4th, meanwhile is F the Prom. You know what to press to pay your respects. These are writing themselves.
Leaving March 7th is a whole raft of obscurities: Blue Jasmine, The Jane Austen Book Club and The Waterboy. Those are then followed by Eat Pray Love on March 9th.

Here's what's new on Netflix in March 2020! We've got a complete list of what's leaving, too.
Normally the big story for each month of Netflix new releases are the exciting batch of Netflix original series and movies arriving. For Netflix's new releases for March 2020, things are a little bit different. Yes, there are some cool originals here but...look at those movies!
March 1 sees the arrival of Corpse Bride, The Shawshank Redemption, There Will Be Blood, and Goodfellas! Martin Scorsese likely can't unilaterally decide when and where his movies stream, but it is a happy coincidence that Goodfellas will now exist alongside The Irishman.
As for those Netflix originals...Ozark is the biggest returning hit in March. The story of a very corrupt family airs its third season on March 27. Also of note are Castlevania season 3 (March 5), Altered Carbon: Resleeved (March 19). But really after Goodfellas, nothing else was really necessary.

Fed up with being offered ‘terrorist’ roles, Palestinian actor Waleed Zuaiter feels liberated by the complex character he plays in Baghdad Central. But it’s his own tale of escape and childhood love that would make for a winning drama
Waleed Zuaiter has the look of a Hollywood icon: salt-and-pepper hair, five o’clock shadow, beaded wooden bracelets worn in a way that projects affluence rather than crustiness, and those intense leading-man eyes. In reality, his acting career has always dangled just out of reach of superstar status. Born in California, but raised in Kuwait, he’s been acting since taking theatre at college. Hulu has almost caught George Clooney. The streaming service is nearing a deal with Paramount Television and Anonymous Content to pick up Clooney’s TV series adaptation of “Catch-22,” TheWrap has learned. The six-part limited series stars Clooney as Colonel Cathcart. Clooney will also direct the satirical war project, with Smokehouse Productions partner Grant Heslov (“The Men Who Stare at Goats”). News that Paramount Television and Anonymous Content were developing the adaptation of the classic 1961 novel by Joseph Heller broke last November. The book is based on Heller’s personal experiences stationed in Italy during World War II and his struggle to keep sane...

George Clooney is heading back to the small screen with “Catch-22.” Paramount Television and Anonymous Content are developing a limited-series adaptation of the classic 1961 novel by Joseph Heller. A network or platform is not yet attached for the six-episode satirical war project set in Italy during World War II. Clooney will star as Colonel Cathcart, and will direct with Smokehouse Productions partner Grant Heslov (“The Men Who Stare at Goats”). Also Read: Is It Time for Tom Cruise to Do TV? The scripts were co-written by Luke Davies (“Lion”) and David Michôd (“War Machine”), who both executive produce. Richard Brown and Steve Golin will.

This is the second time that Den Of Geek has had the pleasure of interviewing author, screenwriter and broadcaster Jon Ronson. The occasion this time was the release of the film Okja, that he’s co-written. The first time? Well, that seemed like a good place to start this interview…

The year is 2010. General Glen McMahon (Brad Pitt) is tasked by a committee of civilian leaders with fixing the mess in Afghanistan. What this actually entails is open to debate. Does it mean winning the hearts and minds of the local populous? Or winning the war against the Taliban? McMahon reckons they’re the same thing.
He and his ego-stroking team take a tour of the country, to see the meagre and underfunded efforts being made by the allies to make good on their promise of roads, schools, democracy, and all that good stuff. McMahon finds a desert of broken dreams.

Bong Joon ho’s “Okja” was booed at its Cannes Film Festival press screening on Friday after a technical issue caused the film to be projected in the wrong aspect ratio for several minutes at the start of the movie. Boos were also heard when the Netflix logo appeared on the screen prior to the glitch. The screening at the Lumière Auditorium proceeded normally after the issue was resolved.

In advance of its splashy bow at Cannes this week, Netflix has released the first full trailer for its much-anticipated Bong Joon Ho monster joint, “Okja.” And it’s adorable.
Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lily Collins, Paul Dano, and Ahn Seo-hyun star in the monster film, which appears to marry the concerns of corporate greed (care of Swinton’s character) and charming inter-species friendship (the eponymous beast and Ahn) into one glorious mash-up of humor and terror as only Bong could create.

While Almost Human marked a memorable feature debut for up-and-comer Joe Begos, The Mind’s Eye represents an unfortunate step backwards. The film feels more like a first-time effort built on unsteady ground, stumbling over a minefield of miscues that rarely pull together the tight, fluid terrors of Almost Human. This psychokinetic Scanners homage falls into a repetition of cut-rate effects and low-budget confidence, constantly failing to marry either aspect with Begos’ passionate respect for a genre he clearly adores and respects. It all sounds great on paper, like an aggressive cut of The Men Who Stare At Goats, but actors scrunching their faces while “emitting brainwave attacks” can only entertain for so long…

"America's Most Admired Lawbreaker," an article written by journalist Steven Brill, traces "the inside story" of Johnson & Johnson, the company that made billions of dollars marketing a harmful drug, Risperdal, to children and the elderly. Legal action against the company resulted in a $2 billion settlement, but Johnson & Johnson brought in $30 billion from sales of the drug. Brill's serialized report is divided into 15 parts.

When it comes to movie stars, few actors in Hollywood better encapsulate what you want out of a veteran A-lister than George Clooney. Not only is he an accomplished actor with an Academy Award on his mantle, he’s a highly regarded writer and director, with an Oscar for producing under his belt as well. He’s a jack of all trades, and with a new star vehicle out on Friday in Money Monster (which I actually see tomorrow), I thought it was high time to go over his best performances to date. There’s no shortage of quality on Clooney’s permanent record, so finding his top works so far won’t be hard, on top of being a pleasure. He’s had a great career that’s only about at the midway point, so there’s not only tons to look at, but plenty more to come as well!

Buoyed by the cult success of dystopian actioner Snowpiercer, South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho has been gradually assembling a starry lineup for his next feature, Okja.

We may have another record-breaking weekend on our hands as Disney's Zootopia looks as if it will topple 2012's The Lorax to claim the largest March opening weekend for an animated feature. Additional new releases include Gerard Butler's second straight weekend with a new release as he stars in the Olympus Has Fallen sequel, London Has Fallen, and Tina Fey delivers the war comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. And once the numbers are tallied, this year's top twelve may come close to doubling last year's top twelve total over the same weekend. Getting a head start on its domestic release, Zootopia has already brought in more than $93 million internationally from 31 territories. That said, not only is it opening in the U.S. this week, it's expanding into 14 additional territories including Germany, Russia (where it had $1.3 million in previews last weekend) and China. These international releases obviously upped the film's online footprint worldwide,...

We already knew 'General Sam Lane' would be joining the likes of 'Red Tornado' and 'Livewire' on Supergirl at some point this season, but now we know who'll play him. According to IGN, Glenn Morshower is set to portray the father of Lois and Lucy Lane in a recurring role. His inclusion comes hot on the heels of Jenna Dewan-Tatum's casting as his younger daughter on the CBS show. Supergirl's General Lane is described as a powerful military lifer and and an overprotective father to both Lucy Lane and her sister, Lois. His arrival in National City stirs up trouble for Supergirl when he enlists her in a dangerous government initiative. Morshower seems to be the perennial military man, having played similar roles in X-Men: First Class, Agents Of Shield, The Men Who Stare At Goats and in Michael Bay's first three Transformers movies. What do you think of Morshower's casting?...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

After analyzing millions of hours of streaming data, Netflix's algorithm has decided that the American people enjoy watching Brad Pitt just as much as they enjoy watching Adam Sandler: According to Deadline, the streaming service has acquired the distribution rights to War Machine, a satirical look at the war in Afghanistan that will star Pitt as a general loosely based on Stanley McChrystal. (It's based on the late Michael Hastings's book The Operators.) Netflix reportedly paid $30 million for the privilege of getting a bona fide A-lister on its roster, while Pitt — who is also producing the film — is reportedly thrilled someone gave him a lot of money to make his own version of The Men Who Stare at Goats.

Scarlett Johansson's latest project sounds a little spooky. She's signed on to star in an adaptation of Jon Ronson's book "The Psychopath Test," a non-fiction book about psychopaths and "the madness industry." It's not exactly clear how the book will be adapted into a narrative, or where Johansson will fit in, but it's being described as "a psychological thriller." Here's the Amazon description of the book:
When Jon Ronson is drawn into an elaborate hoax played on some of the world's top scientists, his investigation leads him, unexpectedly, to psychopaths. He meets an influential psychologist who is convinced that many important business leaders and politicians are in fact high-flying, high-functioning psychopaths, and teaches Ronson how to spot them. Armed with these new abilities, Ronson meets a patient inside an asylum for the criminally insane who insists that he's sane, a mere run-of-the-mill troubled youth, not a psychopath -...

Jon Ronson is a renowned investigative journalist who has spent years exploring the more hidden aspects of society for radio, television, and print. His books, including Clubbed Class, Them: Adventures With Extremists and The Men Who Stare At Goats, all feature a narrative structure that is specific to Ronson’s work – setting factual investigation within the gripping flow of his experiences in tracking down the information. Each account has the reader essentially riding shotgun with Ronson as he goes to get the story. The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through The Madness Industry, published in 2011, features this structure, too, and is now being developed by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment as The Psychopath Test, starring Scarlett Johansson.
The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through The Madness Industry sets out to explore the murky world of psychiatric diagnosis, and in doing so, looks at the mental health industry, including the media, the professionals and the patients – specifically psychopaths.

Now we're sure that author Jon Ronson will correct us on this if we've got this wrong, but there's an incident that he describes at the start of his excellent book, The Psychopath Test. He talks about a threat being made to an unnamed website, as a consequence of an interview that was run with Ronson himself.
Er, we think that was us. Let's just say that we certainly had a few (friendly) phone calls about it. If you've read the book, you'll know which bit we're referring to. Again, it may be another website that we don't know of, but reading Ronson's words brough back some memories.
If you've not read the book, then you may be tempted to go for a film version of The Psychopath Test instead. Universal Pictures is backing the movie take on the book,...

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have set "Futurama" and SNL writer Kristin Gore to pen a psychological thriller film adaptation of "The Men Who Stare At Goats" author Jon Ronson's book "The Psychopath Test".
Scarlett Johansson is attached to star and Jay Roach to direct the project which Brian Grazer, Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey will produce.
The story deals with how the medical community tries to diagnose and classify an elusive group - remorseless, deadly psychopaths. Around 1% of people are said to be psychopaths - devoid of empathy, manipulative, deceitful, charming, seductive, and delusional. The book explores their world and the madness industry.
Roach and Gore are also teaming on the HBO comedy pilot W"omen In Space" about a group of women on a mission to colonize another planet.

Kristin Gore, a veteran of Futurama and Saturday Night Live, is on board to write the script, which will turn the book’s subject matter – how the medical community attempts to diagnose and classify psychopaths and the industry that has built up around them – into a psychological thriller. There are scant details yet on what the final movie, assuming it makes it through the thorny forest of development, will actually be about, but Ronson’s work has proved fruitful in the past, with The Men Who Stare At Goats already turned into a film.Johansson enjoyed a big hit with Lucy last year and earned plenty...
