Matthew Vaughn is a savvy filmmaker who should know his films, particularly when they go sailing over the top narratively and tonally — which describes pretty much all of them save for his 2004 debut directorial effort, "Layer Cake" and the open-hearted whimsy of "Stardust" — tend to divide critics. You either go with the rousingly ultraviolent superhero satire of "Kick-Ass," or you rage against its vile excesses, chief among them being the transformation of an 11-year-old into a gun-wielding, slicing-and-dicing whirlwind of death known as Hit Girl. He specializes in juvenile subversion, but if you can get past the giddy excess of his films, they occasionally contain a surprising degree of thematic depth.
Vaughn's 2024 flop "Argylle" was not, on any level, a thoughtful film. It's a star-studded stew of a spy-comedy romp that's meant as a one-and-done spinoff from the director's largely successful "Kingsman" franchise. On the surface, given its colorful assortment of celebrities,...

Jim Carrey is one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood thanks to his unique slapstick comedy that has continued to captivate audiences’ attention for decades now. Having worked on several projects, and exploring different genres, he has proven his versatile talent and acting prowess, which is rare to find.

Given that he is always in the public eye, he often garners the limelight for his vocal thoughts, just like he did in Kick-Ass 2. However, he abandoned his movie midway, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as per the franchise creator, Mark Millar.

Matthew Vaughn has managed to establish himself as a brand name when action comedies are concerned. He managed to achieve success with the Kingsman series, but his filmography includes other interesting titles such as Stardust (2007), Kick-Ass (2010), and X-Men: First Class (2011). Vaughn is definitely a director who is interesting and who knows his trade, but his most recent feature, Argylle, was a complete flop, despite a potentially intriguing premise and a star-filled cast. The critics have panned the Kingsman spin-off, and it was a disaster at the box office, earning less than $100 million against a $200 million budget.
In a recent talk with Empire magazine, Vaughn discussed the reception of Argylle, and the director was not shy about expressing his disappointment with how it all turned out for the movie. He believes firmly that the movie was not that bad and that the reactions were simply too harsh.

In somewhat of an omen, one of the year’s earliest big releases that featured an all-star cast and aimed for major commercial appeal flopped at the box office amid some major critical and viewer jeers. Matthew Vaughn’s attempt at creating a new franchise with the twisty-turny action-comedy Argylle did not land in the slightest, despite it seeming like such a no-brainer hit that the director had already been coming up with ideas for sequels. Those who have seen the movie may even remember a post-credits scene that is intended to lead into the next chapter.
Vaughn has now recently opened up to Empire about being blindsided by the negative reactions to his film. When asked if it was disappointing to see such a reception, Vaughn naturally replied, “F*ck yeah.” The X-Men: First Class director went on to explain, “My guard came down on Argylle. We had done...

The critical and commercial success of movies like Anyone But You and Immaculate has made it easy for Sydney Sweeney to move on from Madame Web, and it looks like her Barbarella remake is now taking shape at Sony Pictures.
Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) reports that Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Last Night in Soho director Edgar Wright is officially in talks to direct, with Jane Goldman, and her daughter Honey, eyed to pen the screenplay. The former will be best known to many of you for her work on comic book adaptations such as Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service.
If everything works out, Jane and Honey will co-write the script with Wright.

When Sydney Sweeney brandishes a curiously phallic laser gun for her reimagining of Barbarella, she could be doing so under the watchful eye of Edgar Wright. According to Deadline, Wright is in talks to direct Barbarella, with Jane and Honey Goldman negotiating to co-write the script.
As Deadline notes, bringing Jane Goldman aboard shows how serious Sony is about assigning strong talent to Sweeney’s dream project. Jane Goldman’s writing credits include screenplays for Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, Stardust, the upcoming Kingsman: The Blue Blood, and more.
During the backlash for Sony’s abysmal Marvel film Madame Web, Sweeney said she joined the film to position herself to pitch Anyone But You. The Barbarella feature starring Sydney Sweeney is getting more oxygen.
Edgar Wright is in talks to direct the film for Sony Pictures, with Jane Goldman and Honey Ross in talks to write the script, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The project is still in early development and is planned as a new take on the character that originated in a French comic series from Jean-Claude Forest.
Barbarella, a mercenary who travels the universe, was portrayed by Jane Fonda in a 1968 movie version that has become a cult favorite. Sweeney’s involvement in the new film was announced in 2022.
This continues Sweeney’s relationship with Sony, with the actress having starred late last year alongside Glen Powell in the studio’s rom-com Anyone but You before appearing with Dakota Johnson in this year’s superhero flick Madame Web.

A fun game those of legal drinking age can play while watching Roger Vadim's surreal/sexy 1968 Eurotrash space romp "Barbarella": take a drink every time Barbarella (Jane Fonda) changes costumes. One will be blindingly intoxicated by the 20-minute mark. "Barbarella" takes place in the distant future wherein the President of Earth (Claude Dauphin) has tasked the title heroine, a freelance space captain, to locate and retrieve Durand-Durand (Milo O'Shea) a scientist who has invented the positronic ray, a weapon of massive destructive power. Barbarella must trek through a picaresque adventure, stopping to be savaged by killer dolls, locked into an orgasm machine (!), and to befriend a friendly angel (John Philip Law). The film was based on the bawdy 1966 French comic by Jean-Claude Forest.

In the first week of May 2024, the first images of James Gunn's Superman were posted, with David Corenswet now inhabiting the role of the Man of Steel.
Looking at Corenswet, it's easy to see that this Superman is a throwback to Christopher Reeve's groovy interpretation of the Superman of 1978.
Not just a superhuman being but a likable dork with a heart of gold, the Superman that baby boomers fell in love with.
It's the opposite of what Zack Snyder envisioned with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice -- an aging Superman feeling alienated from humankind and looking downright surly.
(The face of Henry Cavill's Superman, that imperious, disenchanted, loveless face, was a work of art. He would do a fantastic job as a villain for a change.)
Despite perfect casting, Snyder went full Emo Superman with his Dcu, adding a splash of moodiness...

This year marks the anniversary of Kick-Ass 2. Unfortunately, the sequel to the surprise original hit is what ultimately killed the franchise. Granted, had the box office sales come out strong then the brand would still be coming out in theaters today. However, the biggest issue with Kick-Ass 2 was that it was unlike anything that made the first installment original and fun. Dave (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), aka Kick-Ass, and Mindy (Chloe Grace Moretz), aka Hit Girl, try to go back to life as normal teenagers. The problem? Their heroism has blown up to the point where a crime-fighting team has

Danny Boyle's lo-fi 2002 zombie apocalypse film "28 Days Later" caused a stir in the horror community for its grainy digital photography (shot by Anthony Dod Mantle) and for its introduction of "fast zombies" into the pop vernacular. The zombies in "28 Days Later" were, unlike most movie zombies seen up to that point, fast-moving and vicious rather than mindless and shambling. It is credited for breathing new life into the zombie genre, followed as it was by other zombie hits like the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, George Romero's "Land of the Dead," and the hit 2010 series "The Walking Dead." "28 Days Later" also tapped into a lot of America's post-9/11 ennui, presenting hard-edged images of urban desolation. Everyone felt like the world had ended, and Boyle aesthetically agreed.

Intro: Director Matthew Vaughn is known for making gangster movies and comic book adaptations. Producing Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and making his directorial debut with Layer Cake paved the way for bigger projects: Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, the Kingsman franchise, Argylle. But in between the gangsters and the over-the-top heroics, he decided to make a fairy tale. Based on the writing of popular author Neil Gaiman, the film tells of witches, unicorns, flying ships, lightning catchers, and a falling star… that’s actually a person. Released in 2007, the movie we’re talking about is called Stardust. And it’s time for it to be Revisited.

Hollywood isn't investing nearly as much in straight-up comedies as they used to. While 2023 saw many of the best comedies of the year come from the indie and arthouse world. "Barbie" was a big winner last year, but that's a blockbuster doing a lot more heavy-lifting than just bringing laughs, with an adventure fueled by one of the most recognizable intellectual properties of all time. "No Hard Feelings" and "Anyone But You" brought some raunchy, romantic laughs to the proceedings, and we were certainly grateful that Jennifer Lawrence and Sydney Sweeney took risks as producers on R-rated studio comedies like that. Otherwise, most of the laughs come from cross-genre comedy hybrids that have bigger box office potential because of a high-concept story that just so happens to bring some hilarity, such as "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" or "Cocaine Bear."
So how is comedy shaping up in 2024? Unfortunately, with some worrisome box office potential,...

Supuestamente,...

While Taylor-Johnson has not yet played James Bond, he is no stranger to action movies or spy thrillers.
Daniel Craig officially turned in his license to kill following 2021’s “No Time to Die,” and in the three years since, there has been a nearly insatiable stream of rumors about who would pick up the 007 mantle. On Tuesday, all of the speculation seems to have been ended as The Sun reports that British film star Aaron Taylor-Johnson has officially been offered the role, and that the official contract is set to be signed in the next week.
Word of Taylor-Johnson’s candidacy for the role has been well-known since 2022, but he was far from the only major name in the running. Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, Cillian Murphy, and James Norton were all rumored to be in consideration at one point, but it appears that Eon Productions has found its latest spy.

As far as the next James Bond is concerned, it seems the name’s Taylor-Johnson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Or at least that’s what British tabloid The Sun would have us believe.
The newspaper has sparked viral speculation that the Kick-Ass star is just moments away from signing a deal to play one of cinema’s most iconic characters.
In a report featured on its front page, The Sun said Taylor-Johnson has been “formally offered the job” and “is going to sign his contract in the coming days.”
James Bond producer Eon Productions declined to comment on the report, but that is not unusual for the company helmed by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
As a source at Eon sagely pointed out to Deadline, if it spent its days reacting to reports about who is replacing Daniel Craig as 007, it would have time for little else.

Consider us both shaken and stirred – according to an unnamed source, Kick-Ass' Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been offered the role of James Bond. It’s real this time, we promise.
After what’s probably been close to a decade of speculation, an insider claims Eon have chosen their next suited super-spy, according to The Sun.
The British media outlet dropped the news from an unnamed source yesterday. To be fair, if we’d leaked the most-anticipated news of Barbara Broccoli’s career before the star had even signed on the dotted line, we’d want to stay unnamed too.
Taylor-Johnson grew to fame in Matthew Vaughn’s punchy, sweary comic book adaptation, Kick-Ass, and its 2013 sequel (directed by Imaginary auteur Jeff Wadlow), and is set to star in the much-delayed Kraven The Hunter from Sony Pictures. The Matthew Vaughn-produced The Stuntman is the second in a new trilogy spun out of 2010’s superhero deconstruction, Kick-Ass.
Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle might not have landed in the manner that he’d have liked, but the filmmaker is already busying himself with his next big project. That will be a trilogy of films that are said to spin-off from Kick-Ass, Vaughn’s 2010 mayhem-filled satire of the superhero genre.
The first film in the trilogy is reportedly titled School Fight and focuses on ‘a teenager who fights with a classmate over a mutual romantic interest.’
That one was completed a while ago, with footage being shared as far back as 2022. As it stands though, we still don’t have a release date for the film, but we do know that it was directed by former stuntman Damien Walters, making his directorial debut. Walters also did some second unit directing on the aforementioned Argylle.

“Argylle” may be 2024’s first box-office dud, but that’s not stopping Matthew Vaughn from prepping the next film in his new “Kick-Ass” movies. Variety reports that the second movie in the upcoming trilogy, which culminates in a “Kick-Ass” reboot, is already in production in England, with stunt man-turned-director Damien Walters helming the project. And the name of the movie? “The Stuntman“; an appropriate title, given Walters’ working history with Vaughn.

Matthew Vaughn is already deep into producing his next feature film, a caper titled “The Stuntman,” Variety has learned.
Helmed by stunt performer turned director Damien Walters, the film tells the story of two brothers who both become stuntmen.
The feature, which is currently in production, comes from Vaughn’s Marv Studios banner along with Walters’ Zebbo Productions. Last October, they shot in Hampshire, where a local newspaper reported a “1970s-style fun fair” had been installed in the village park, complete with a helter skelter and ferris wheel.
“The Stuntman” is aiming for a launch at Toronto later this year or Sundance in 2025 and is part of a new “Kick-Ass” trilogy, according to Vaughn.
The first film of the trilogy, also produced by Vaughn and directed by Walters, was called “School Fight” and told the story of a teenager who gets into a fight with a love rival at school.
