Julia Louis-Dreyfus is weighing in on comedians who say political correctness affects their comedy.
The Veep star is not opposed to being sensitive to certain topics and doesn’t think being politically correct threatens comedy.
“If you look back on comedy and drama both, let’s say 30 years ago, through the lens of today, you might find bits and pieces that don’t age well,” Dreyfus told The New York Times in an interview. “And I think to have an antenna about sensitivities is not a bad thing. It doesn’t mean that all comedy goes out the window as a result.”
She continued, “When I hear people starting to complain about political correctness — and I understand why people might push back on it — but to me that’s a red flag, because it sometimes means something else. I believe being aware of certain sensitivities is not a bad thing.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has taken the challenge to test her acting skills beyond the comedy genre with her latest film, Tuesday. The fantasy drama, made in collaboration between A24, the British Film Institute, and BBC Film, presents the Seinfeld actress as a mother of a terminally ill daughter.
Daina O. Pusić’s directorial debut presented the comedian with a new challenge, but Dreyfus did not shy away from admitting that some part of it was emotionally harrowing for her.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus discussed political correctness, the roles she’s drawn to, including starring in upcoming film Tuesday (out June 14) where she stars as a mother whose teenage daughter has a terminal illness, and more in a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times.
The actress has portrayed a variety of characters with “sharp edges” — from Seinfeld’s Elaine Benes to the self-absorbed Selina Meyer in Veep — they’re very funny, but they are not “good girls,” she said. “I don’t play girls who behave a way that a good girl should behave.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus doesn’t recall the exact pitch she got for Daina O. Pusić’s feature directorial debut “Tuesday,” but she remembers the gist of it. “Maybe they told me, ‘This is a super unusual film,’ and that was it,” the film’s star told IndieWire during a recent interview. She’s not fudging on that designation.
In the film, Louis-Dreyfus stars as Zora, the single mother of ailing teenager Tuesday (played by the remarkable Lola Petticrew). Tuesday has been sick for some time, and when Death arrives at the pair’s London flat, the deeply empathetic Tuesday immediately realizes who he is and what he wants.
And while we can’t ever stop Death, we can delay him a bit, which is exactly what Tuesday attempts to do, mostly by befriending the beleaguered bird and offering him the sort of kindness and respect no one had in the past.

Law & Order very nearly became the longest-running crime drama on television. If it hadn't been for a 10-year hiatus, it would have reached its 24th season a long time ago.
Thanks to that break, sister show Law & Order: Svu has pulled ahead by two seasons.
Still, Law & Order is one of NBC's most iconic shows, from its "dun dun" chime between scenes to its filming on location in New York City. It's high time for a cast and character guide to help you keep track of who you can expect to see (and not see!) during Law & Order Season 24.
Two Characters Are Not Coming Back
Many viewers were shocked when Jack McCoy (Sam Waterson) left Law & Order after over 400 episodes.
Waterson had been with the series since Season 4 and was probably more closely identified with it than any other character.

Gary Oldman is having the time of his life with Jackson Lamb.
The third season of AppleTV+’s “Slow Horses” welcomes back Jackson (Oldman) fast asleep on a couch in the waiting room of a doctor’s office. Only his shoes are visible as he lays back, eyes closed, and freely lets out a series of farts. Other patients look on in disgust and are offended by his behavior. One goes up to the receptionist and complains about him. Poking his head up, Jackson says in a wry manner, “It’s my colon, terminal.”
Jackson Lamb is a grumpy old man, who drinks, smokes, dons a filthy raincoat with cigarette burns and stains, needs a shower badly… and farts a lot. He attempts personal hygiene this season by cleaning his underarms in the office restrooms, except there’s no soap around. And Oldman can’t get enough.

If you’re not caught up on your peak TV viewing, consider this your spoiler warning. Four months have passed since Jennifer Coolidge bagged her second consecutive Emmy for “The White Lotus” and thus became the eighth drama or comedy series regular honored by the TV academy for a season in which her character died. Emmy nominations of this kind have become quite common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2024 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will be added to the list.
The current consensus among more than 2,400 Gold Derby users is that five continuing series performers whose characters perished within the past year will receive Emmy nominations, while a few others have outside shots at recognition. This does not include characters like Anakin Skywalker who died before their shows’ latest seasons began but appear as ghosts or in flashbacks. Undead characters like most of...

Alan Partridge is officially back as evidenced by a new first look image from his upcoming BBC documentary “And Did Those Feet… with Alan Partridge.”
Filming has officially commenced on the show, in which comedian Steve Coogan (who was twice nominated for Oscars his work on 2013 comedy-drama “Philomena”) reprises his role as the hapless interviewer.
The six-part mockumentary follows Partridge as he returns to Norfolk following a year in Saudi Arabia and struggles to reintegrate.
“One of the first – if not the first – documentary to address the issue of mental wellness, the six-part series follows the revered and beloved broadcaster on a quest to understand what’s going on, with Britain’s minds and his own,” reads the official logline. “It’s a show that makes a statement that will create shockwaves: ‘I’m Alan Partridge, and I’m not Ok.’ Partridge will write, present and produce the series. He will also direct the series.

When Saturday Night Live began, it wasn’t even called Saturday Night Live. That honor belonged to a rival variety show hosted by Howard Cosell that launched the same year on ABC primetime. Hence why the young, hungry, and immensely talented sketch comedians assembled in 1975 were dubbed the “Not Ready for Primetime Players.”
That earliest and now quasi-mythical first class of SNL alumni remain the only ones to hold that title. Perhaps this is because the joke stopped working after many of them proved more than capable of carrying a primetime television series. In fact, most of them went on to have successful careers on TV, the Broadway stage, and for the precious and most spectacular few… in the movies.
Ever since Chevy Chase exited SNL after its first season, the series has been viewed—sometimes to creator and producer Lorne Michaels and NBC executives’ consternation—as a launchpad for movie stardom.

We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

Happy anniversary to the Writers Guild of America strike! On May 2, 2023, Hollywood writers officially put their pencils down in an effort to bring compensation closer in line with the revenues generated by their movies and TV shows. A steadfast refusal by studios to engage with writers on some issues led the strike to be prolonged, and eventually, the Screen Actors Guild joined the work stoppage as well.
Fast forward to 2024, and many studios are still trying to get their production schedules back together. Fortunately, it looks to be smooth sailing for getting TV productions on track in 2024, and The Streamable has compiled its traditional list of new titles coming to TV and streaming every day this week to help you keep track of what’s coming back when.

Exclusive: Clea DuVall (Happiest Season) has been tapped to direct Abbi and the Eighth Wonder, a female-driven comedy adventure film in development at TriStar Pictures.
Based on an original screenplay by Matt Roller, which made the Black List in 2021, the film’s plot is under wraps. Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen will produce for 21 Laps, with Emily Feher overseeing the project for the company.

Following his 2015 Emmy win for the final season of “Mad Men,” Jon Hamm took a large step back from TV stardom in order to beef up his film resume with titles such as “Baby Driver,” “Richard Jewell,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Now that he has made a splashy return to the small screen by playing new roles on “Fargo” and “The Morning Show” and reprising one on “Good Omens,” his Emmy nominations total could instantly rise from 16 to 19. If all of his possible 2024 bids come to fruition, he will be only the fourth person and second man to ever compete for three acting Emmys at once.
Hamm’s string of recent TV acting gigs began last July when he returned for season two Prime Video’s “Good Omens” as supporting character Gabriel – a humanoid version of the biblical archangel. He then fulfilled the new role of ambitious tech billionaire Paul Marks...

This list contains series that will brighten up even the most difficult everyday life. At the same time, each of them is not an empty trinket, suitable only for wasting time and forgetting, but an individual and stylish project, made with real wit and screenwriting skill.
1. Veep, 2012-2019
Few mock politics as blatantly as Armando Iannucci's satirical sitcom. The show mocks not only the main character, Selina Meyer, but also her hapless team trying to keep Selina in power. As the show progresses, Meyer becomes President of the US, but does not stay in that position for long.
Veep is, of course, a show for those who love when jokes are delivered at machine-gun speed, the morals of political managers are mocked in the most merciless way, and political reality appears as a series of paradoxes.
2. BoJack Horseman, 2014-2020

One of the biggest TV shows in the history of entertainment, Seinfeld is still as famous as ever. Created and starring Jerry Seinfeld as a fictional character, it was the series’ witty writing and impeccable comedic timing that made it as popular as it is now. No less than a phenomenon, the series eventually inspired a bunch of lingo and even a curse.
Seinfeld
Coined after the extremely famous lead actors of the hit NBC show failed to have any successful shows following the end of Seinfeld, the Seinfeld curse is a term specifically used to refer to the feats of the three Seinfeld actors- Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards following the end of the show. And among them all Louis-Dreyfus fought particularly hard to break it, only for her show to brutally crash.

“Outwardly, he gives the impression that he doesn’t care very much,” Gary Oldman recently said about portraying a disgraced MI5 agent on the acclaimed AppleTV+ spy drama “Slow Horses,” explaining that underneath his disheveled exterior, there’s so much more to the man than what meets the eye. “He’s unkempt, and he uses it to play a game. It’s a defense mechanism, and I would say he cares a lot more than most.”
Oldman is mesmerizing in “Slow Horses” as the aloof and often contemptuous Jackson Lamb. He’s a pariah living out his twilight days as the begrudging leader of a group of fellow outcasts to whom he is almost comically obnoxious and offensive. He is truly captivating every time he’s on screen. So, a brilliant performance deserves a brilliant Emmy campaign. ‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.
This reps the final major awards show where “Succession” (which ended its run last May) was still eligible. Besides best drama, the show also won the episodic drama prize, for the episode “Living+,” written by Georgia Pritchett and Will Arbery.
The WGA Awards recognized the best of 2023’s television and film via its annual event held this year at the Hollywood Palladium for the West Coast edition and at New York’s Edison Ballroom for the East Coast ceremony.

Sue Naegle and Ali Krug are in business with Universal Studio Group’s UCP.
The Emmy-winning pair has signed an overall deal with the Universal division through which their newly established Dinner Party Productions will develop and produce series.
This marks the first time former UTA, HBO Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures boss Naegle has worked directly with Universal. She exited her Chief Content Officer role at Annapurna in 2022. As we reported at the time, Krug had initially taken over her TV division responsibilities, but has since reunited with her former boss and long-time production partner to launch Dinner Party.
In development is a series adaptation of Elon Hilderbrand’s novel ‘The Five-Star Weekend’ for Universal’s sister streamer Peacock, with Bekah Brunstetter penning the script. The book follows a popular food blogger, who, after a tragedy, brings friends from distinct times in her life to spend a weekend in Nantucket.

Tulsa King season 2 has now started shooting, and Deadline reports that Craig Zisk (Weeds) has signed on to direct and executive produce the Paramount+ series.
It was reported last year that showrunner Terence Winter would be stepping down from the series following some creative differences with creator Taylor Sheridan. However, he decided to come back as a writer for the second season, which would keep his interactions with Sheridan at a minimum.
While Winter is still involved as an executive producer, he will primarily focus on writing for the show as well as working closely with Sylvester Stallone. “He loves these characters and loved working with Sly and was glad his post-strike schedule allowed him to return to write but not run the show,” a source said. Instead of bringing in another showrunner, the production decided to follow in the footsteps of the other shows produced by Sheridan’s 101 Studios...

And now Edebiri is the odds-on favorite to win the Best Comedy Actress Emmy for Season 2 in September, which would put her on a short list of women who’ve won both comedy lead and supporting trophies.

The show still continues to fund the bank accounts of its cast members, including Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards. A recent report suggested that Jerry Seinfeld has even joined the elite billionaire club.

The 2024 event, which was pushed back in the wake of the Hollywood strikes, will take place on Saturday, April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium.
“A good writer is an actors’ greatest gift,” Nash-Betts said in a statement. Fifteen minutes into the debut episode of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s podcast, the power is knocked out by a bomb cyclone. Her guest, Jane Fonda, continues speaking, unaware the connection is lost, and Louis-Dreyfus frantically attempts to reconnect, amid a few choice swear words and a blaring home alarm.
Rather than edit it out, Louis-Dreyfus saw it as an asset and kept it in the episode: “It’s just funny. So, I figured why not? Let’s include it. Everybody can relate too. I was so tense.”
The Veep and Seinfeld star was inspired to create Wiser Than Me after watching the 2018 documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts and reflecting that older women, despite having cultivated decades of wisdom, are rarely heard from. Last month, it was announced that writer/producer Judalina Neira is developing a TV series reimagining of the classic sitcom Bewitched for Sony Pictures Television, aiming to turn it into an “irreverent hourlong” show. NBC clearly likes the idea of reviving Bewitched, because now Deadline has broken the news that the network has their own “Bewitched-inspired” show called Something Wicked in the works, and this one already has a star attached: June Diane Raphael, who may be best known for playing the character Brianna Hanson for the 94 episodes that make up the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons.
Raphael is also writing and executive producing Something Wicked with Dickinson creator Alena Smith. A multi-camera comedy, the show is described as having a Bewitched-type premise and will also serve as an homage to TV sitcom classics. Chicago – The names “Tj & Dave” are legion in the Chicago entertainment scene. The improvisation duo – T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi – are improv performers who heighten the status of the city as a comedic destination. Now they’re featured in a indie TV pilot that will premiere at SXSW 2024 entitled “Bettendorf Talks.”
The show – produced by Shane Simmons and directed by Jack C. Newell – is a sharp and smart “show within a show” and a workplace comedy regarding the newest (and most unlikely) local talk show to come out of the titular Midwestern Quad City. Hosted by the “has been” comedy duo T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi (who star as caricatures of themselves), the two attempt to mount a hit show in search of a sliver in their former glory. Other featured performers include Tim Kazurinsky, Sadieh Rifal, Brian King. Cassie Kramer, Nnamdi Ngwe, Emma Pope and Ike Reilly.

Plot: After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham has grown increasingly paranoid and unstable when she turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak, as an unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor continues to grow, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in both the palace and the country fracturing around her.
Review: Politics, violence, sex, and humor are all elements that have made quality programming ranging from Game of Thrones to Veep. In The Regime, these elements are played for laughs as much as they are chills and provides a platform for Kate Winslet to deliver her most distinct role yet. When Chancellor Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) addresses the citizens of her unnamed Central European country, she doesn’t sound like a politician. “My loves,” she coos in a plummy, posh accent, further softened by a hint of a lisp. “I bless you all, and I bless our love. Always.” Seven years into her reign, this signoff suggests that Vernham has transcended the role of head of state, or even autocratic strongwoman. The propaganda videos she records from her palace, a luxury hotel turned personal residence, are closer to guided meditations than ideological sermons.
