For good reason, Portugal is this year’s Country of Honor at the Annecy Animation Festival. A decade ago, new government financing structures were put in place that have helped create a young and vibrant industry that has earned critical and awards praise around the world, including the country’s first-ever Oscar nomination.
Perhaps the most striking thing about Portugal’s burgeoning animation scene is its incredible diversity. Local artists are competing in the biggest festivals around the world with traditional 2D animated work, stellar stop-motion, mixed-media titles and, increasingly, sharp CG animation of a quality that would have been impossible just a few years ago.
According to Fernando Galrito, artistic director of Monstra Festival, “In my opinion, the absence of a strong ‘aesthetic school’ imposing plastic guidelines, technical, aesthetic, or narrative rules, allowed for a variety of artistic approaches and creative freedom that led to a great conceptual diversity.

Portugal is this year’s Country of Honor at the Annecy Animation Festival, so we’ve decided to take a close look at the current generation of artists who are helping to inspire a new era for the country’s animation sector and, increasingly, making waves abroad.
Below is a list, in no particular order, of 11 exciting Portuguese animation talents to keep an eye on. Some have been around for several years and already started to put together impressive bodies of work, while others are just emerging on the scene.
Rodrigo Goulão De Sousa
The work of Gobelins-trained filmmaker Rodrigo Goulão De Sousa features a distinct 2D aesthetic and genre-heavy horror and thriller themes that regularly border on the unsettling. The combination makes his titles feel as contemporary thematically as they do aesthetically, expanding the ways that animation can be used to frighten audiences. De Sousa’s appearance on our list is well-timed,...

Not that long ago, we confirmed that Peter Jackson was indeed coming back to The Lord of the Rings franchise, but as a producer, and that a new movie had been confirmed for a 2026 release. The movie was soon revealed to be The Hunt for Gollum, and we also received confirmation that Andy Serkis would be coming back to the role that made him famous, but that he would also be directing the movie as well. As part of a large plan to revitalize The Lord of the Rings cinematic franchise, all of this news certainly seems interesting, and so are the casting rumors.
Serkis is the only confirmed actor so far, but we have reported recently that Viggo Mortensen is open to returning as Aragorn, and we have now received news of another cast member from the original trilogy expressing his desire to return to the franchise, but there is a very morbid catch.

Even though people are used to horror characters not being as intelligent and inventive as they could be, there are a number of protagonists that stand out for their abilities to find a way out of a deadly mess. These include, undoubtedly, Sidney Prescott from the Scream franchise, as well as the leads of 2017’s hits, Get Out and It.
Neve Campbell’s Sidney paved the way for all modern female characters of the genre, and the lead of the horror we’re going to talk about is no exception. This slasher is claimed to be a must-watch because of only her, apart from its impeccably-written plot.
The film centers on the Davisons, an extremely wealthy family whose unity was seemingly broken long ago. In an attempt to mend their family ties, they decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary and invite all four children with their partners.

FX on Hulu’s The Bear will dish up an all-new season to kick off summer. Season 2 already elevated the show with its numerous guest stars as well as the transition of the family sandwich shop into a fine dining establishment. Season 1 swept the first of two Emmys ceremonies this year, with the second hoping to follow in those footsteps.
After Season 1 raked in its 10 Emmys at the 75th ceremony, the cast and crew had various responses to the comedy genre label. Since the show’s launch, stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach have all been cast in other high profile projects like The Iron Claw for White, The Fantastic Four for Moss-Bachrach and Luca Guadagnino’s next film, The Hunt, for Edebiri.
Fans of the intense kitchen-set series may anticipate new faces and poignant needle drops like Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” for Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Richie.

Back in 2012, the world saw the first film, based on Suzanne Collins’ dystopian novels. Since then, The Hunger Games fever has swept all cinema lovers, especially ones of the younger generation, and marked the new era of dystopian movie franchises.
It has also given rise to a number of attempts to mock all these authoritarian fictional worlds and their frightening rules, with one movie of this kind definitely standing out among all of them. Even though it was released 4 years ago and fell victim to the pandemic’s limitations, it’s still heatedly discussed by Redditors.
Its plot revolves around twelve people who wake up in a strange remote place unaware of where they ended up and how. It turns out they were kidnapped by a group of crazy elites to hunt them for fun. However, their game is about to be turned down by one of the hunted who...

“La Mesías” star Carmen Machi, Almodóvar muse Rossy de Palma and Blanca Portillo, a Cannes best actress co-winner for Almodóvar’s “Volver,” are set to star in “The Prey” (“Dia de Caza”), billed as a contemporary revision of Carlos Saura’s 1965 pic “The Hunt,” quite possibly his crowing achievement.
The film is set to shoot in July in Spain’s Extremadura, with theatrical release scheduled for autumn 2025.
Brutal, kinetic at times and taking no prisoners, Saura’s original won a Berlin Silver Bear. The film follows three once-close friends reuinting for a rabbit hunt; the final bloody outcome was read as a broad metaphor of the social elite in dictator Francisco Franco’s Spain.
Directed by Pedro Aguilera “The Prey,” set in the summer of 2024, has three women reuniting for a rabbit hunt in the very same stark valley where Saura shot “The Hunt” almost 60 years before. Under a remorseless sun,...

In the late eighties/ early nineties, shortly after they did Predator together, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McTiernan and writer Shane Black were all set to team on a big-budget movie adaptation of the DC comic book Sgt. Rock. This is why, at the end of Predator, Black is seen reading a Sgt Rock comic during the cast roll. According to author Nick de Semlyan’s new book, “The Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the project was heavily developed in ’88 and ’89, only to be demolished by an unlikely candidate – Monty Python’s John Cleese.
At the time, Cleese was riding high on the success of A Fish Called Wanda, and McTiernan thought he would be an ideal addition to the movie’s cast. The film was set to adapt an old Danny Kaye comedy called Imitation General. Cleese would play an English cook posing as a general during WW2 and being...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” below.]
Wes Ball had two things going for him in directing “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”: His love of the original franchise, which he first watched on TV as a kid in the ’80s, and his admiration for “Avatar,” whose virtual production and performance capture prowess he leveraged with the help of Wētā FX.
“Something I’ve always wanted to do is go play in that ‘Avatar’ style and do it here, where there is no camera, there’s no lights, there’s no set really,” Ball told IndieWire. “And you have to create that in the computer with really talented artists. And I had a great time doing it.”
Ball got a taste of the tech working with Wētā on the shuttered “Mouse Guard” adaptation of David Petersen’s graphic novel (a casualty of the Disney/Fox merger). “That...

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” marks composer John Paesano’s first foray into the Apes franchise. Following in the footsteps of Jerry Goldsmith (“Planet of the Apes”), Michael Giacchino (“
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”) and others, he knew he’d have big shoes to fill. The first thing he thought about was the “musical legacy as well as the “giant music” associated with the scores.
The film picks up 300 years after Caesar’s death, in a post-apocalyptic world where the Apes rule. Even though Paesano was telling a new story, he wanted to honor the music that had come before him and respect the fans, while also finding a way to take the score in a new direction while keeping everything as organic as possible. Speaking with Variety, Paesano said, “I wanted to take it to a place where the franchise is headed.”

Last month, non-profit group Good Energy launched what it called a Bechdel Test for Climate Change, a simple set of criteria designed to determine if it was clear climate change was present in a film. The real Allison Bechdel even endorsed it.
As part of the “Climate Reality Check,” just three movies nominated for Oscars this year passed the test’s two simple rules: “Climate change exists” and “a character knows it.” Now a more extensive study published by Good Energy and Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and Environment has analyzed 250 of the top grossing movies between 2013 and 2022 under the same criteria.
Global warming has been with us for a while now, but only 12.8 percent — 32 of the 250 films studied in that time span — even passed the first criteria saying that climate change exists. Only 24 films, or 9.6 percent, passed both criteria of the test.

Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino is to direct Julia Roberts in the “intense dramatic thriller” After The Hunt.
Luca Guadagnino just can’t help himself. In what must be a personal game of project Jenga, he continually adds films to his slate until his tower partly collapses, a few projects go by the wayside and he starts adding more again. Let’s recap: This year, Guadagnino has two films releasing. Challengers, the highly-anticipated love triangle tennis drama that was supposed to release last year before the Hollywood strikes upended everything. Challengers is slated to release later next month, but Guadagnino also has Queer on the way later this year too. That sounds equally promising given that Guadagnino is directing Daniel Craig in an adaptation of the William Burroughs book of the same name. A24’s Alex Garland dystopian U.S. movie Civil War is looking at an $18 million-$24 million opening frame when it hits North American theaters over April 12-14.
In this oddball marketplace, ya gotta figure downside as we’re still limping away from the strike. While Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is eyeing a $45M opening this weekend, I hear presales on that title are low. If that Jason Reitman-produced movie is going to hit the mid-$40M range, it really needs a big turnout by Latino moviegoers and walk-ups.
Further boosting projections on Civil War is A24’s grab of Imax screens. The current Rotten Tomatoes critics score on Civil War following its electric SXSW world premiere is 91% fresh.

Peter Garde, European film financing vet and frequent collaborator of filmmakers like Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, has died aged 67 in Fakse, Denmark, after a long battle with cancer. Garde’s wife, Nanna, confirmed the news to Deadline alongside his close associates, Peter Aalbæk Jensen and Anders Kjærhauge.
Garde began his education in finance in the small town of Store Heddinge in Denmark, where he was a student set to become a banker. He ultimately went on to start his own financial exchange company.
After the success of Lars Von Trier’s Breaking The Waves, Garde was convinced by his close friend producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen to join Zentropa and help manage all the money that was pouring into the studio, which ultimately became the beginning of Garde’s long career with Lars Von Trier and Zentropa Studios’ films. He joined the company in 1997.

There’s No Such Thing as Zombies isn’t so much a comedy about the zombie apocalypse as it is the story of three people, Carlotta, her husband Paul and his old school friend Colin.
When Colin’s bragging gets on Paul’s last nerve, Carlotta gives him a “vitamin” which Colin recognizes as Troxidil, a powerful antidepressant that also doubles as male birth control by decreasing sperm count. This really doesn’t sit well with Paul, not only was he being lied to, he was being prevented from starting the family he wanted.
At this point, we cut away to The Hunt and Christina Show, whose hosts are also talking about Troxidil, specifically allegations that it causes the dead to rise. They’ll soon be joined by Victoria Winkelhauser a...

Dwelling in the past and the opportunity for a fresh start have been recurring central themes in this Stan original. Most of the lead characters are haunted by something from their past, which is reflected in their actions as they take a dip in the contemplation of new opportunities in life. The exploration of this introspection adds depth to not just the narrative but the characters as well, unraveling the complexities of human experience. These characters confront their personal demons as they explore a plethora of emotions, which the narrative does a great job of depicting, weaving through their individual stories. Through the display of this aspect of human nature, The Tourist creates a rather compelling story that resonates with the audience. Some of the characters bravely face the challenges of letting go of their past, contributing to a thought-provoking spectacle, while for others, the past plays a key role in their antagonism.

Chris Rock is set to direct the English language remake of the Oscar-winning Another Round: more here.
The Oscar-winning 2020 black comedy Another Round is a superb film, a mainstream-leaning movie about drink dependency starring Mads Mikkelsen in the lead role. Thomas Vinterberg directed the film, and around the time Another Round became a hit, there was talk of an English-language remake.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way picked up the rights, and there’s been development work presumably going on since around that time. Not that there’s been much word on the project popping up in the press.
Now, though: some news. As you’d expect, given the headline and the fact that this non-ai-generated article exists.
Chris Rock is returning to directing for the English-language Another Round. Stuart Bloomberg had penned a draft of the script, yet there’s now going to be a new writer...

"Go ahead and run! I know what you look like!" Magnify Films has revealed the first look teaser trailer for a Sundance film called Veni Vidi Vici, from filmmakers Daniel Hoesl & Julia Niemann. This Austrian film is premiering in the "World Cinema Dramatic Competition" section at Sundance 2024 this month. Apparently it's commentary on the uber-rich, using a familiar idea in The Hunt and/or the classic "The Most Dangerous Game". The Maynards and their children lead an almost perfect billionaire family life. Amon is a passionate hunter, but doesn’t shoot animals, as the family's wealth allows them to live totally free from consequences. So he hunts humans. The cast includes Laurence Rupp, Ursina Lardi, Olivia Goschler, Kyra Kraus, Tamaki Uchida, and Dominik Warta. The filmmaker explains why: "The situation is serious... To create a parable, you have to exaggerate, paradoxically enough." This looks disquieting, with much more stronger commentary...

There are lots of intriguing films premiering at Sundance this year, like “Love Lies Bleeding,” “A Different Man,” and Steven Soderbegh’s “Presence.” But how about a social satire that sounds like a mix between HBO’s “Succession” and the 2020 Blumhouse flick “The Hunt”? Enter “Veni Vidi Vici,” ready to premiere on the fest’s opening night.

Being set around Halloween, Scream VI was packed with immediately recognizable horror costumes. Jason Voorhees. Freddy Krueger. Michael Myers. Pinhead. Not to mention Ghostface. They were all in there. But during a party scene, one of the characters is wearing a costume you might not recognize. It’s a knight’s suit of armor, but made out of cardboard. That’s the same costume the protagonist in the 2007 horror comedy Murder Party (watch it Here) wears. If you didn’t recognize it, then we have to tell you all about Murder Party – because it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Murder Party was the feature directorial debut of Jeremy Saulnier, who has gone on to direct films like the revenge thriller Blue Ruin, the neo-Nazi horror film Green Room, and the mystery thriller Hold the Dark, as well as episodes of True Detective season 3. Saulnier also wrote the screenplay for the film.

“Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal!” many a “Home Alone” fan will be quoting today. Turns out, the family at the heart of the film, the McCallisters, is filthy rich.
The New York Times did some deep dive research to assess just how wealthy the McCallisters are, and found that they are definitely in the one-percent of Chicagoland households. Their relative wealth has become something of an internet obsession in recent years: After all, they have a stately Georgian-style home in a swank North Shore neighborhood, can afford to put up a sprawling group of family visitors, and have a caravan of vans to take them to the airport. And of course, their home is considered the top target of the Wet Bandits in the entire area.
The Zillow listing for the McCallister house at 671 Lincoln Ave. in Winnetka, Illinois, says it’s worth over $2.3 million today. That would mean an...

"The hunt will never stop." Netflix has unveiled the main official trailer for a Korean mystery thriller event titled GyeongSeong Creature, which will be split into two parts. The series is set in Gyeongseong (which is the old name for Seoul) in 1945. In Seoul's grim era under colonial rule, an entrepreneur & sleuth fight for survival and face a monster born out of human greed. During Japanese rule over Korea, two young adults confront a strange creature and battle against it for survival. Starring Park Seo-jun and Han So-hee, with Claudia Kim (from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Kim Hae-sook, Cho Han-cheul, & Wi Ha-jun (from Squid Game). Gyeongseong Creature Part 1 debuts at the end of December, with Part 2 a few weeks later in early January. This full trailer still doesn't show any actual shots of the creature(s) in this, only hints (same as the teaser). There's tentacles and claws.

"Europe is a tough place. And only the strongest of you will make it there." Voltage Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for a Belgian horror thriller survival film called The Hunted, made by French filmmaker Louis Lagayette. This seems to be a promo trailer to attract buyers more than for audiences, since there's no release dates set. After their boat capsizes in the Mediterranean Sea, a group of refugees are rescued by rich Europeans who offer them shelter on an idyllic island. But the miracle soon becomes a nightmare when the saviours turn into ruthless manhunters. So this is a campy modern twist on "The Most Dangerous Game" story, involving refugees who get turned into the prey when they're taken to a private island. Scary! Starring Lily Banda, Alec Newman, Mylène Jampanoï, Raj Bajaj, Vassilis Koukalani, Aurora Marion, & Daphne Alexander. It's a bit of a manipulative concept, but the...

Chithha, written and directed by S.U. Arun Kumar is a fantastic example of how one can grip the audience’s attention with the sole intention of never letting it go. After picking the sensitive issue of child abuse and weaving it into the narrative centered around Eshwar (played brilliantly by Siddharth) and his niece Sundari, the film becomes a commentary on revenge and the patriarchal motivations behind such emotions. Chithha, translated as ‘uncle,’ gets extremely close to the gruesome reality of child abductions and the consequent abuse and all the violent aftermath associated with such scenarios, but it maintains its watchability, keeping the family audience in mind, but I must add that this is a hard watch for anybody. The imagination fills in the gap when the violence happens offscreen, and that is easily the most terrifying aspect of this film. But beneath the surface, the film’s spirit of...

There’s Violent Mads.. And Quiet Mads..
And now there’s Very Quiet Mads.
In his fifth Danish Oscar entry, “The Promised Land,” a Nordic pioneer Western from Nicolaj Arcel (Mikkelsen’s director from a decade ago on the nominated “A Royal Affair”), Mikkelsen delivers an almost silent, stoic, physical performance as captain-turned-potato-farmer Ludvig von Kahlen as he tries to tame the 18th-century Danish heath.
As the bastard son of a nobleman and his maid, making something of a piece of turf is the only way for the veteran to move up into the upper class. “He so desperately wants to become part of something that he hates, nobility,” Mikkelsen told IndieWire during a recent interview in Los Angeles. “They don’t deserve it. They haven’t worked for anything. He decides that he wants to be part of it.”

The Zurich Film Festival, which runs Sept. 28 – Oct. 8, will honor the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen with its Golden Eye award in recognition of his “successful career and versatility,” the Swiss event said Monday.
Mikkelsen will accept the award on Oct. 6, and will present his latest film, “The Promised Land,” which had its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival this month. Nikolaj Arcel’s film was described by Variety critic Guy Lodge as a “lavishly upholstered historical romp,” and “a Danish Western, built on black-and-white moral binaries and a yee-haw sense of intrepid adventure.”
Lodge wrote: “Notionally rooted in historical fact, but embellished with storybook romance and flouncing cartoon villainy, this roundly enjoyable Venice competition entry finally owes all its residual gravitas (and at least half its considerable handsomeness) to the expressive woodcut visage of one Mads Mikkelsen.”

The Hanged Girl was initially shot, and released in some countries as The Haunting at Saint Joseph’s, something writer/director Jon Cohen should be used to as his 2009 exercise in torture porn, The 7th Hunt was retitled and rereleased in 2021 as The Hunt.
However, this is an entirely different type of film, opening in the 1800s during a smallpox epidemic. A young woman goes to a convent hoping to find help for her village. Instead, she’s hung as a witch, her spirit still said to haunt the area. Although I suspect it’s the sisters who are practising the dark arts as they have nylon rope a hundred or so years before it was invented.

Every episode of the classic sci-fi/horror anthology "The Twilight Zone" begins with the introduction of some seemingly normal people, usually in the midst of a seemingly normal day. What they don't realize, of course, is that this will be the day they encounter the strange, the fantastic, and sometimes the horrifying. And just as they begin their journey, the camera pans over to a man in a respectable suit. He looks directly at the audience and explains who these people are, exactly what troubles them (or is about to), and reveals that they are about to enter — you guessed it — "The Twilight Zone."
Exactly what "The Twilight Zone" is, is never made clear. Episodes of the classic series often take place in the real world as we know it, but also sometimes in the distant future, or the distant past, or on other planets, or in the afterlife. They don't clearly connect together,...

Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, one of Netflix’s most recent offerings is a compelling Indian documentary titled The Hunt for Veerappan. This four-part documentary series emerges as a captivating exploration of one of India’s most notorious criminals, Veerappan. However, this documentary goes beyond a mere exposé of Veerappan’s criminal exploits and adeptly serves as a mirror, projecting back to the audience the intricate dynamics at play among law enforcement tactics, societal tensions, and the delicate equilibrium between criminal activity and the quest for justice. The series goes beyond Veerappan’s life to reveal how different factors influence law and order. Selvaraj’s skilled direction prompts us to think about the bigger consequences and ethical questions that emerge when society seeks revenge against criminals. This documentary shows the strength of storytelling, exposing both the grim aspects of humanity and the intricate challenges in the ongoing battle between crime and justice.

Blue Whales: Return Of The Giants 3D takes viewers on a journey of a lifetime to explore the world of the magnificent blue whale, a species rebounding from its near extinction. Following two scientific expeditions—one to find a missing population of blues off the exotic Seychelles Islands, the other to chronicle whale families in Mexico’s stunning Gulf of California—the film transforms our understanding of the largest animal ever to have lived. From its almost incomprehensible size to its spectacular feeding habits; from the surprising role it plays in the health of our oceans to its awesome long-distance communications, the film provides an unforgettable window into the lives these animals live—and the extremes scientists must endure to study them. Joined by a cast of supporting characters—from dolphins and sperm whales to sea lions and orcas—the blue whale finally gets its star turn … in life size,...
