Belgium's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 90th Academy Awards. It was the second film by director Michaël R. Roskam and actor Matthias Schoenaerts to be selected by Belgium. The film was chosen to represent the country before it had an official screening.
When the project was announced in 2012, it would be "a film noir about a criminal gang in Brussels in the late 1980s". After Adèle Exarchopoulos was cast in 2015, it became an "amour-noir", a tragic love story between a gangster and a racing car driver.
Shot in 60 days.
Screenwriter Thomas Bidegain also wrote the screenplay of Matthias Schoenaerts' film Rust and Bone (2012).
This is the first Belgian film for both Matthias Schoenaerts and Michaël R. Roskam since Bullhead (2011).
