Carey Mulligan has more than lived up to her promise. The English actor was an obvious, stand-out talent early in her career, whether she was playing one of the Bennett sisters in Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice” adaptation or in an acclaimed one-episode appearance in BBC’s “Doctor Who.” When 2009 saw her receive a Best Actress nomination for her role in the acclaimed drama “An Education,” it seemed to mark the emergence of a great new young actor.
And since that breakthrough, Mulligan has only continued to go from strength to strength. An actor’s actor with the ability to fully embody the complicated women she’s often cast as, Mulligan consistently picks interesting, juicy parts, in films as varied as “Never Let Me Go,” “Drive,” “Shame,” “Far from the Madding Crowd,” and “Mudbound.” As she’s gotten a little older and aged out of the young ingenue parts...

Chris Rock is set to direct the English language remake of the Oscar-winning Another Round: more here.
The Oscar-winning 2020 black comedy Another Round is a superb film, a mainstream-leaning movie about drink dependency starring Mads Mikkelsen in the lead role. Thomas Vinterberg directed the film, and around the time Another Round became a hit, there was talk of an English-language remake.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way picked up the rights, and there’s been development work presumably going on since around that time. Not that there’s been much word on the project popping up in the press.
Now, though: some news. As you’d expect, given the headline and the fact that this non-ai-generated article exists.
Chris Rock is returning to directing for the English-language Another Round. Stuart Bloomberg had penned a draft of the script, yet there’s now going to be a new writer...

Julie Christie became a British star of the Swinging Sixties through her performances in such films as Doctor Zhivago (1965), Darling (1965), Fahrenheit 451 (1966), and Far from the Madding Crowd (1967). She discovered her passion for the performing arts at the age of nine during her days in boarding school. Renowned for her incredible beauty and husky smooth voice, Christie has a reputation for giving her all to her job. Over time, Julie Christie became choosy with accepting roles but didn’t fail to deliver a top-notch performance. Fellow celebrities have lauded her talent, including Al Pacino who described Christie...

In the 1960s, there were few cameramen who shared Nicolas Roeg’s ability to render sirenic, jittery sensuality at 24 frames per second—and this was an era whose dominant culture arguably cracked open and redefined the sensual palate. Even more impressively, Roeg’s gift often manifested itself most lucidly while serving the orgiastic gimmicks of Roger Corman’s The Masque of the Red Mask and the bucolic splendor of John Schlesinger’s Far from the Madding Crowd with the guarded glee of a merry prankster spiking a corporate water cooler with LSD.
But it’s not just that Roeg successfully snuck timely art into the mise-en-scène of those and other studio-centric films, it’s that he seemed incapable of recording anything but subtle art within whatever limitations his aspect ratio enforced. And so while Walkabout may have been his proper directorial debut, it’s far more significantly his final cinematographic statement.

Trainspotting producer Andrew Macdonald has been appointed as the new Chair of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff).
As part of the role, Macdonald will lead the formation of a new organization that will deliver Eiff from 2024. Macdonald will now recruit a board and executive team to lead the Festival’s development from September 2023.
Like many Scottish film professionals, Macdonald is an Eiff alum. He worked at the festival in 1992, during which he made a video diary about raising cash to produce his first feature film, Shallow Grave. The film was finally made in 1993 and had its world premiere at Eiff in 1994.
Written by John Hodge and directed by Danny Boyle, the film was a box office success and won the BAFTA for Best British Film. Macdonald went on to produce several films with Boyle, including Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, and T2 Trainspotting. Since 1997 he’s headed DNA Films,...

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

There’s no release date yet for Kate Winslet’s next HBO project, the limited series event “The Palace,” created by Stephen Frears. But the network is tiding viewers over a first look at the upcoming drama.
Currently filming in Austria before the production relocates to the United Kingdom, “The Palace,” per HBO, “tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel.”
We may not know a lot about this new project– like the plot, the characters, or whether it’s inspired by anything in real life — but you can get a small sense of the general vibe of things in the image, which features a glowering, yet somehow stoic Winslet sitting in a very fancy room.

Following her Emmy-winning performance in "Mare of Easttown," Kate Winslet is returning for a brand new series on HBO. The "Titanic" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" actress is leading the cast of "The Palace," which depicts a year in an authoritarian regime as its foundation begins to crumble within the walls of a palace. Hugh Grant is part of the cast alongside Winslet -- he was last seen in Netflix's "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" in a cameo appearance, playing Benoit Blanc's live-in partner.
"The Palace" is rocking talent behind the scenes too, with the writers of "Succession," "The Menu," and "Bodies Bodies Bodies" working with the directors of "The Crown" and "The Queen."
While their characters, the plot, and filming details are being kept under wraps, here's everything we know -- as yet -- about HBO's "The Palace."

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. Zeitgeist Films and Kino Lorber releases the film in select theaters on Friday, June 23.
Perhaps the most explicit and emotionally intense film of the New Hollywood era — and yet in its “Odd Couple” theme and wistful sensibility a profoundly Old Hollywood film, too — “Midnight Cowboy” remains littered with contradictions. Gay and tender, its representation of sex is vile. It’s nostalgic and hopeless; a celebration of the counter-culture and, seemingly, an indictment of its decadence. All that makes Nancy Buirski’s new documentary about its production and legacy more interesting.
Not that “Midnight Cowboy” isn’t already fruitful subject matter. James Leo Herlihy’s radical 1965 novel was picked up by British kitchen sink filmmaker John Schlesinger, who related to its themes of repressed homosexuality, loneliness, victimhood and how our identities are, in truth, whatever we want them to be.

Though you might think Midnight Cowboy’s main claim to fame is one of the most famous improvised lines in screen history (“I’m walkin’ here!”), Nancy Buirski’s fascinating and really quite hypnotic documentary will introduce more thoughts and perspectives on a truly underrated Hollywood milestone. Directed by John Schlesinger in 1969, Buirski’s subject film has the rare distinction of being the only X-rated movie to win the Best Picture Oscar, although that claim is put to the test here, opening up a whole other can of worms in the process.
Desperate Souls, Dark City And The Legend Of Midnight Cowboy, world premiering in the Venice Film Festival’s Classics section, is more of a mosaic or essay film than a forensic dissection, but here that phrase does a disservice, since it gets into ideas and themes in ways traditional docs can’t (notably an especially brilliant musical sequence...

Writer-director Thomas Vinterberg took to the stage Sunday night to accept the Oscar for best international feature film for Another Round, and his speech quickly became one of the most touching moments of the night. In his speech, Vinterberg thanked the artists he worked with on this and other films and also dedicated the win and the whole movie to the memory of his late daughter, Ida.
Vinterberg has been a staple in the international filmmaking world since the mid-1990s. Over the past couple of decades, he has written and directed a wide variety of movies, both in his native Denmark and for English-speaking audiences, and has competed for prizes at major film festivals like Cannes, Berlin International Film Festival, and others.

“A Biography Of A Film”
By Raymond Benson
Lately there has been a new trend in film books that are more like biographies than simply non-fiction treatises on the making of a movie. A “biography of a film,” as critic Molly Haskell calls it, treats a particular motion picture in the same way a researcher would examine a person’s life—from the inception to its lasting influence and impact today, meticulously illustrating each step and examining the personnel involved along the way. The recent Space Odyssey by Michael Benson (a “biography” of 2001: A Space Odyssey) is a fine example.
Glenn Frankel’s Shooting Midnight Cowboy—Art, Sex, Loneliness, Liberation, and the Making of a Dark Classic is one such biography of a film, and it is a magnificent tome. Besides dissecting the all-important sociological milieu that was in the background while Cowboy was being made,...

Carey Mulligan is emerging as a possible favorite to win her first Oscar for “Promising Young Woman.” She has already scored Best Actress bids from the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, so she is well on her way to nabbing her second Oscar nomination in March. Mulligan was first nominated at the Academy Awards in 2010 at the age of 24 for “An Education,” a huge breakthrough for the actress that led to numerous starring roles over the last decade. Now back in major awards contention again, Mulligan might have a path to victory along the lines of another actress that voters discovered at a young age: Natalie Portman.
SEEAfter Golden Globe noms, who’s up and who’s down in Oscar race?
While the “Star Wars” prequels had already made Portman a well-known actress before “Closer,” she was only 23 when she received an Oscar nomination for that 2004 film.

The upcoming Netflix series “Pieces of Her” has added five to its cast, Variety has learned.
Jessica Barden, Omari Hardwick, Joe Dempsie, David Wenham, and Jacob Scipio have all been cast opposite previously announced stars Toni Collette and Bella Heathcoate.
The series is based on the best-selling book of the same name by Karin Slaughter. In a sleepy Georgia town, a random act of violence sets off an unexpected chain of events for 30-year-old Andy Oliver (Heathcoate) and her mother Laura (Collette). Desperate for answers, Andy embarks on a dangerous journey across America, drawing her towards the dark, hidden heart of her family.

Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is one of the most well-regarded comics of all time. 75 issues were released between 1989 and 1996 telling the story of the Endless, an immortal family that personifies basic elements of reality. The focus is on the Lord of Dreams (aka Morpheus/Dream/The Sandman), whose journey takes him across history, through weird dimensions and into hell itself. Many attempts have been made to adapt it over the years, but Netflix has succeeded where everyone else has failed and the show has now been filming for two months.
The strange thing is that we still don’t know much about it. Right now, the only things we can say for certain is that it’s happening, that Gaiman is involved and that the initial season will adapt the first book. What remains a mystery is who’s starring in it, which is intriguing, as Netflix tends to...

“The Banker,” a sumptuous Apple TV Plus production competing in the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival’s main competition this week, is the true story of Bernard Garrett and Joe Morris, two Black investors who broke down racial barriers during the 1960s by keeping their race secret. Dp Charlotte Bruus Christensen worked with director George Nolfi to conjure a magisterial look to the trappings of a real estate empire for the film, which moves from small-town Texas to booming Los Angeles – and finally to the halls of Congress, where the protagonists face a reckoning for rocking the boat.
When you’re going into a low-budget film that calls for a big, old-school Hollywood look and period locations, what are you thinking of as a way to pull it off?
One of the things that pushed this toward 35mm film was that the script and the period and everything about it had a sort of a heavyweight feel.

If the latest rumors about Mads Mikkelsen’s future casting decisions have you reaching for an alcoholic beverage, his upcoming Another Round may be more to your taste. Quite literally: Mikkelsen here plays a high school teacher who tests a theory with three colleagues that their life will improve if they main a constant blood alcohol level. Delightful chaos, at least a few bad decisions, and a nasty hangover are inevitable as these friends attempt to escape from their midlife crises by raising spirits.
The latest from Thomas Vinterberg—whose recent work has endearingly ricocheted between lush period romances (Far From the Madding Crowd) and submarine dramas (The Command)—seems to have far more on its mind than simply offering an opportunity to watch Mikkelsen dance while sloshed based on today’s new trailer.

From the Good Omens and American Gods TV series to the How to Talk to Girls at Parties film and at The Ocean at the End of the Lane play, it’s been a good couple of years to be a fan of Neil Gaiman adaptations. This is especially true if you’re a fan of The Sandman, the acclaimed comic book series written by Gaiman and published by DC Comics. Earlier this year, Audible released a multi-part audio drama directed by Dirk Maggs with Gaiman acting as the creative director, executive producer, and narrator on the project, and Netflix continues to move forward with its own screen adaptation of the graphic novel. That esteemed contemporary sage Homer Simpson once observed that alcohol was “the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.” The idea behind that joke permeates “Another Round” (“Druk”), the latest from director Thomas Vinterberg (“Far From the Madding Crowd”), a film that centers on drinking to excess but winds up being more about mid-life crises and less a jeremiad about the evils of demon rum.
Working from an incisive and insightful screenplay he wrote with Tobias Lindholm, Vinterberg crafts another drama that presents the best and worst of human nature as paths to be explored. His characters don’t necessarily choose the right one, and sometimes we’re left to wonder which selection they’ve made, but Vinterberg — in marked contrast to his fellow Dogme 95 filmmaker Lars von Trier — at least concedes that redemption might exist.

Screen can exclusively reveal the first trailer for Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round, which was named in the Cannes 2020 Official Selection yesterday.
Written by Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm, the film centres on four friends – all high school teachers - who test a theory that they will work and live better by maintaining a constant level of alcohol in their blood.
Their initial results are positive with classes and results improving; however, as they continue the experiment the results become more extreme.

10 Best Non-Superhero Comic-Book Movies of the 2010s, From ‘Atomic Blonde’ to ‘Snowpiercer’ (Photos)
Superhero movies, it has been (accurately) said, rule the box office. But although billions of dollars are made every year adapting comic books about costumed vigilantes, there is a whole universe of comic-book storytelling that frequently goes unexplored. Human dramas, light comedies, sci-fi and action comics alike, these works are frequently brought to the screen but sometimes overlooked by mainstream audiences who equate comics with the superhero genre. We were paying attention. These are the non-superhero comic book films that moved us and thrilled us this decade.

In the summer of 2000, the Russian submarine named Kursk took on a naval exercise in the Barents Sea, the first of its kind since the fall of the Soviet Union a decade earlier. The Command (released under the title Kursk elsewhere), written by Robert Rodat and directed by Thomas Vinterberg, tells of the sub’s crew, the crew’s families and the government that failed them. Without fully spoiling this real-life event, things do not go well from those onboard the vessel.

Now with a new title for U.S. audiences, a new trailer has just arrived for The Command (originally called Kursk), which features a talented ensemble including Matthias Schoenaerts, Colin Firth, and Léa Seydoux in the lead roles. Directed by Thomas Vinterberg, the thriller follows the devastating true story of 23 sailors trying to survive the K-1412 Kursk submarine back in the year 2000.

Can “A Quiet Place” become a rare horror film to compete for Best Picture at the Oscars? The box office sleeper hit about a family forced to live in silence to hide from monsters with super-sensitive hearing has earned nominations at the PGA, WGA, SAG, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards, so it’s frighteningly possible. Fox Searchlight’s Tolkien about the legendary Lord of the Rings author will open in theaters on May 10.
The movie, directed by Dome Karukoski, and starring Nicholas Hoult as J.R.R. Tolkien and Lily Collins as his muse and wife Edith Bratt, explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. Nicolas Roeg, the supremely talented British cinematographer who ultimately became an acclaimed director, has died at age 90. Roeg's unique eye for filming scenes in a creative manner gained him a reputation in the movie industry in the 1960s. He was a second-unit photographer on David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" and contributed to Lean's "Doctor Zhivago". By 1964, he was credited as Director of Photography on Roger Corman's "The Masque of the Red Death", one of the most stylishly filmed Corman horror productions. Soon, he found himself constantly in demand. Other films he photographed included "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", "Far from the Madding Crowd" and "Petulia". He also contributed to the 1967 spoof version of "Casino Royale".
Roeg next moved into the Director's chair with the bizarre and controversial 1970 crime film "Performance" that has since become a cult classic. Better received was...

The 1970s were the heyday of what was still known, with Victorian understatement, as the love scene: those writhing arenas of nude intimacy, which moviegoers experienced with a touch of voyeuristic awe, to the point that the scenes were talked about for years, or even decades. And except for the clashing close encounters in “Last Tango in Paris,” no love scene of the ’70s was as celebrated, as talked about, or as swooned over as the one that appeared a year later in “Don’t Look Now,” the splendidly creepy 1973 chiller that’s arguably the greatest movie directed by Nicolas Roeg, who died Friday at 90.
The film’s two stars, Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, were both considered deliriously sexy at the time, though if you watch the movie today they look more or less like what they were playing — a handsome but ordinary middle-class couple still reeling in grief...

Roeg's vision of Venice in Don't Look Now
Film fans have been paying tribute today to Nicolas Roeg, the director behind some of the 20th Century's most iconic films. The man behind Walkabout, Don't Look Now, The Man Who Fell To Earth and Performance (which he co-directed with Donald Cammell), he will be remembered as one of the greatest auteurs Britain has produced.
A Cbe and Fellow of the BFI, the London-born director was active in the industry for over six decades, releasing his last documentary, The Film That Buys the Cinema, in 2014. His last fiction film, Puffball, came out in 2007. Alongside directing, he won acclaim for his work as a cinematographer on films including Masque Of The Red Death, Fahrenheit 451, Lawrence Of Arabia and Far From The Madding Crowd. His own films often dealt with themes of death, grief, identity and mysticism.
"His films hypnotised me for years and still continue.
