In the wake of last year’s box office hit Insidious: The Red Door, Sony has announced tonight that the next installment in the Insidious franchise has been dated for 2025 release.
You can expect the untitled next movie in theaters August 29, 2025.
Deadline notes in their report tonight that this particular project is Not the previously announced spinoff movie Thread: An Insidious Tale, which doesn’t yet have a release date.
Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani will star in Thread: An Insidious Tale.
Director James Wan’s original Insidious movie in 2011 was followed by Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), Insidious: The Last Key (2018), and last year’s Insidious: The Red Door, which became the highest grossing movie in the entire franchise thus far.
Needless to say, this franchise still has a lot of life left in it. Stay tuned for more.

Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Julia Garner has been signed on to star in Leigh Whannell’s ‘Wolf Man’.
The movie reunites Julia — playing a mother whose family is being terrorised by a lethal predator — with Christopher Abbott, with whom she starred in 2011’s ‘Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene’, her first professional acting role, reports Variety.
Since then, Julia has gone on to become a major player in both film and television, winning three Emmy awards for her standout performance as Ruth Langmore in ‘Ozark’, and garnering multiple nominations for her portrayal of real-life con artist Anna Delvey in Shonda Rhimes’ limited series ‘Inventing Anna’.
As per Variety, in the film, Julia earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her impressive lead turn in Kitty Green’s ‘The Assistant’. Last year, the pair teamed up again for another critically acclaimed feature, ‘The Royal Hotel’, which Julia also produced through her Alma Margo production banner.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

After five years, “Insidious” is taking fans to the Further once more with “Insidious: The Red Door.” The latest installment is now available on Digital, which means now is the perfect time to catch up on the creepy franchise (or experience it for the first time). Beginning with “Insidious” in 2010, the horror films center around a family who finds themselves haunted by demons from another realm, along with the people who try to help them.
Created by horror veteran Leigh Whannell (who also created the “Saw” franchise along with James Wan), each installment of the “Insidious” takes viewers deeper into the Further, a nightmarish dimension populated by tortured spirits and ruled over by a malevolent demon. “The Red Door” will be the fifth installment in the franchise, and will once again focus on the Lambert family, with Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins all reprising their roles from the first two films.

July 2023 launched with a fairly disappointing weekend ahead of the 4th of July, and this weekend, three new movies – one a sequel, the other two original – take on the second weekend of Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Even with three new films in wide release this weekend, it doesn’t feel like any of them have the strength to really make much of an impact against Indy, so we probably can expect “Indiana Jones” to win a second weekend with between $24 and 26 million.
As far as the new entries, we first have “Insidious: The Red Door,” the fifth movie in the horror franchise launched by James Wan and Leigh Whannell 13 years ago, starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins. All three are back for “The Red Door” with Wilson making his directorial debut for a...

Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani are set to star in Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster’s “Thread: An Insidious Tale” for Screen Gems, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
“Moon Knight” filmmaker Jeremy Slater is set to direct.
The plot is being kept under wraps, but, according to Deadline, which first reported the news, “Thread,” the sixth installment in the “Insidious” horror franchise, explores the experiences of ordinary individuals who find themselves entangled with demonic entities. However, it is not a direct continuation of the current series but rather an offshoot project.
In the film, Moore and Nanjiani portray a married couple who use a spell to go back in time and save their daughter from dying. However, their actions lead to severe consequences.

Disney has had some serious success turning its theme park attractions into movies. Specifically, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise turned into one of the biggest in the studio's history, with more than $4.5 billion worth of box office to show for it across five movies and 20 years. Unfortunately, it has been tough for the Mouse House to replicate that success, as other theme-park-to-silver-screen plays have not been quite as successful. To that end, 2015's ambitious sci-fi flick "Tomorrowland" failed badly to bring the futuristic land from the Disney theme parks satisfyingly to the big screen.

There are several films in Hollywood's history that started their lives as original concepts, but were later incorporated into extant franchises. Briefly, some of the more famous examples include John McTiernan's "Die Hard With a Vengeance," which started as a thriller sans John McClane called "Simon Says." That film was meant to star Brandon Lee but was reworked after his death. Additionally, "Ocean's Twelve" was once meant to be a John Woo film about only two -- and not twelve -- rival thieves, but was repopulated to serve as a sequel to Steven Soderbergh's hit heist movie. And there is, of course, Russell Mulcahy's baffling sequel "Highlander 2: The Quickening," which, thanks to a quick repurposing of an original script, transformed a tale of magical immortals into a bizarre dystopian sci-fi film set in the future.

Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” is in a virtual tie for No. 1 at the box office with Paramount/Skydance’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” earning 12.7 million on Friday from 3,906 theaters as industry estimates project a 30 million opening.
Such a result for Baz Luhrmann’s biopic on The King of Rock and Roll would match pre-weekend projections, and reception has also been strong with an A- on CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 79 critics and 93 audience.
“Elvis” still has a way to go before it reaches profitability with a reported 85 million budget, but the film is performing consistently with other summer music biopics and turning out older audiences. While other Warner Bros. releases last year like “Cry Macho” and “King Richard” failed to attract older audiences, the studio reports that 60 of opening day crowds for “Elvis” were over the age of 35 while 43 were over 50, giving hope that those demographics will continue to support the film well into July.

There have been plenty of horror films set in the Old West and the Old South, as well as eras of religious inquisition in the Old World. “The Last Thing Mary Saw” goes where relatively few have gone before, however, by taking place in the still-new United States’ “civilized” rural East, where an industrial age had yet to penetrate and mores remained none too distant from the earliest European settlers’ harsh Puritanism.
Most obviously comparable would be 2015’s sleeper hit “The Witch,” though this first feature by writer-director Edoardo Vitaletti is not as vivid in atmospheric or suspense terms. Still, it’s similarly distinguished by a strong sense of a particular cultural epoch’s comingled faith, fear and oppression, even if “Mary” is set more than 200 years later. Perhaps more rewarding in the end as straight, downbeat period drama than as an occult thriller, it was acquired by genre platform...

Universal crashed and burned on their first attempt to create a Dark Universe featuring some well-known monsters including Frankenstein, The Mummy and Dracula. Instead of making blockbuster movies with big stars headlining them then, they went the other direction with The Invisible Man. Produced by the notoriously frugal but successful Blumhouse, the pic was a hit thanks to director Leigh Whannell’s economical filmmaking and Elisabeth Moss’ fantastic performance.
And it appears that Universal liked the director’s work so much that they may bring him on for another monster movie. According to Deadline, Whannell is now in talks to direct Wolfman. The report says that he’ll also write the treatment for the film based on an original idea, with Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo penning the script.

After doing such a stellar job on reinventing ‘The Invisible Man’, Leigh Whannell has entered into talks with Universal Pictures to helm another monster movie ‘The Wolfman’.
Ryan Gosling is already attached to the feature which will see Whannell write the treatment for the film, based on an original idea of his own. Blumhouse will produce.
The original ‘The Wolf Man’ debuted in 1941 with Lon Chaney, Jr., in the title role. The title character has had a great deal of influence on Hollywood’s depictions of the legend of the werewolf. The film is the second Universal Pictures werewolf film, preceded six years earlier by the less commercially successful ‘Werewolf of London’ (1935).
After a disastrous start to the Dark Universe with the Tom Cruise led ‘The Mummy’, Universal dropped the idea of an interlinked Monster universe and subsequently saw Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions take the gauntlet to push things...

Leigh Whannell may be coming off notable acclaim for his most recent directorial effort in a modern re-telling of The Invisible Man, but it seems that the director’s next move will see him revisit the mythos of one of his previous efforts, the 2018 Blumhouse-hailing sci-fi film, Upgrade, this time for the small screen.
Blumhouse Television and Ucp are going into development on an Upgrade sequel television series, reports Deadline. The series will be co-created and executive produced by Whannell, with day-to-day duties set under the purview of appointed showrunner Tim Walsh, who will share co-creator credit with Whannell.
The studios have already opened a writers room, in which Whannell and Walsh will be joined by a duo of writers/producers in Krystal Ziv Houghton and James Roland, both of whom executive-produced another notable Blumhouse TV offering in the second season of the movie franchise-spun USA Network series, The Purge,...

The latest attempt to bring classic monsters from the Universal canon to bring them into modern cinema, The Invisible Man is an occasionally effective, but nevertheless disappointing return on investment. Despite starting out very strong with a superlative performance from Elisabeth Moss, the film loses its way near the half-way point and becomes a standard cat-and-mouse revenge tale.
Cecilia Kass (Moss) is trapped in a relationship with an abusive sociopath (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), who also happens to be a brilliant scientist. When she finally gathers the courage to leave him, he appears to use a new ability he has discovered—invisibility—to hunt her down and claim him as her property. While those around her question her sanity, Cecilia must protect herself and those closest to her before it is too late.

Leigh Whannell, the longtime Blumhouse creator and director of “The Invisible Man,” has signed an overall first-look deal with Blumhouse.
The two-year deal will cover projects Whannell wants to write, direct or produce for film and TV.
Whannell and Blumhouse have collaborated on seven projects over the course of 10 years, including “The Invisible Man,” which is in theaters this weekend.
“Leigh creates movies which not only build franchises but fundamentally change the landscape of their genre,” Jason Blum said in a statement. “After he and James Wan made ‘Saw,’ it launched dozens of copycats. Their work with Blumhouse on ‘Insidious,’ founded not just a franchise but dozens of classical proscenium PG-13 supernatural horror films. I have no doubt that will be true for ‘The Invisible Man’ and for anything else he wants to create. I just want to be there with him when he does.”

Fresh off the successful opening weekend of “The Invisible Man,” director Leigh Whannel has signed a first-look deal with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions for film and television.
“Ten years ago, I walked into Jason Blum’s office thinking that I was having a general meeting with a producer who liked horror movies — little did I know that a decade-long partnership and friendship was about to begin. I have since watched his then-infant company, Blumhouse, grow into a powerhouse of genre films, a nurturing place that is willing to take risks on people. Indeed, they have taken plenty of risks on me and I look forward to taking many more with them as they continue to grow in the world of film and television,” said Whannell.

3rd Update, Saturday Am: Horror films in the wake of New Line’s It Chapter Two ($91M opening) have been in a frightening free fall at the domestic box office and for various reasons.
They were either too long or based off of a non-mass appealing piece of source material (i.e. Warner Bros.’ truly sublime Doctor Sleep which went into a coma with $31.6M domestic final), so cheap that their distributors believed that there was no reason to spend any more money than what was necessary, or just flat out awful (the F-graded Grudge and The Turning plus the D+ Cinemascore pic Black Christmas). After seeing broad comedies get swallowed up whole by streaming and minimized at the box office, the last thing major studio executives need is for another crowd-appealing genre, in which moviegoers have a great shared experience,...

Actor and screenwriter Leigh Whannell and director James Wan changed the horror landscape when their low-budget sleeper hit Saw became a cultural phenomenon in 2004. After the massive success of their feature debut, the Australian filmmaking duo continued to collaborate on a series of horror films, including Dead Silence (2007), Insidious (2010), and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013). In 2015, while Wan was behind the wheel of Furious 7, Whannell made his directorial debut with Insidious: Chapter 3, which he also wrote. His next feature, the kinetic cyberpunk sci-fi actioner Upgrade, ended up as my favorite movie of 2018. Now, the talented writer / filmmaker tackles his biggest project yet with a modern retelling of The Invisible Man, inspired originally by H.G. Wells' 1897 novel and James Whale's classic 1933 film of the same name. Elisabeth Moss stars as Cecilia Kass, an architect in San Francisco trapped in an abusive relationship with her violent and controlling ...

Eight weeks into the year and we've already seen six films released that fall within the horror and/or thriller genre category and of them only Sony's two entries -- Fantasy Island and The Grudge -- have managed to deliver double digit openings. This weekend, Universal and Blumhouse's The Invisible Man looks to not only top those marks, but deliver the highest opening for a horror title since last year's It Chapter Two.
Following the disappointing debut of The Mummy back in 2017, a film intended to serve as the first film in Universal's proposed Dark Universe, the studio quickly shelved that idea and now, with the release of The Invisible Man this weekend, the studio offers a standalone feature in which writer-director Leigh Whannell brings his own spin to the story. Focus Features/Carnival’s “Downton Abbey” is blowing by opening weekend expectations after grossing $13.8 million on Friday and is now expected to take No. 1 with a $31 million opening weekend.
To the surprise of box office trackers, moviegoers have accepted Lord Grantham’s invitation en masse. Released on 3,079 screens — Focus’ widest release since “Atomic Blonde” in 2017 — “Downton Abbey” is now on pace to set a new opening weekend record for Universal’s indie wing, topping the $22.7 million made by “Insidious: Chapter 3” in 2015.
With a passionate fanbase of the hit ITV/PBS TV series to draw from, “Downton Abbey” was expected by analysts to be a hit. However, a more modest opening in the $18-20 million range was expected with a strong hold in later weeks thanks to support from older moviegoers.

"Not man. Not machine. More." One of the biggest surprises of the year is an action sci-fi titled Upgrade, the second feature film directed by Australian filmmaker/writer Leigh Whannell. Whannell has worked in Hollywood for over a decade. He broke in with a little indie called Saw, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 and went on to become, well, a succesful franchise and a massive hit. Whannell wrote the script for it with James Wan, and starred in it, then continued his career mostly as a screenwriter & producer. The first film he directed was Insidious: Chapter 3 in 2015, jumping in the hot seat with another horror franchise he co-created with James Wan. Upgrade is Whannell's first time going all out, directing an original screenplay he wrote, working with Blumhouse and mega-producer Jason Blum to get the film made. I've been following Whannell closely since the early days of the Saw movies,...

Taking place April 19th–22nd at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel in the festive French Quarter of The Big Easy (with screenings being held at Regal Cinemas Cinebarre Canal Place 9 Movie Theater), the 2018 Overlook Film Festival will showcase 23 feature-length films from around the world, including the buzzed-about Hereditary, Unfriended: Dark Web, and the world premiere of Darren Lynn Bousman's St. Agatha.
In addition to movie screenings, this year's Overlook Festival is once again brimming with live performances...

Leigh Whannell has been one of the leading voices in modern horror ever since Saw arrived on the scene in 2004. For his second time taking the directorial reins, Whannell ventures into the realm of science fiction with Upgrade, his beautifully brutal action flick that turns Logan Marshall-Green into a living, breathing weapon hell-bent on revenge after an accident and a run-in with some hired thugs leaves him paralyzed and grieving his wife, who is killed by the group of unknown assailants.
Clearly influenced by films like The Terminator, Videodrome, The Matrix, RoboCop, and there may even be a little bit of Johnny Mnemonic in there as well (hey, a girl can dream, can’t she?), Whannell transports us into the future where technology has taken over nearly ever facet of our lives, but Grey Trace (Marshall-Green) still clings to his analog-loving existence by working on classic cars and expressing his...

A competitive weekend at the UK box office saw Disney Pixar’s latest animation Coco land in first place. The film started its run with a Fri-Sun total of £3.34m, adding to £1.88m in previews for a non-final official debut of £5.2m.
That’s a middle-of-the-pack opening for a Pixar release, landing it between Brave, which opened to £5.27m in 2012, and the original Toy Story, which debuted with £4.59m in 1996. Those films ended on £22.16m and £22.49m respectively, so that’s a reasonable benchmark for Coco to aim for.

(Note: This post contains spoilers for “Insidious,” “Insidious: Chapter 2” and “Insidious: Chapter 3.”) The release of the newest movie in the “Insidious” franchise, “Insidious: The Last Key” might be a little bit confusing for viewers who haven’t been paying close attention to the series’ lore and chronology.
