Sam Mendes is undoubtedly one of the best filmmakers of our times. Among his many hit films are American Beauty (1999), which earned him the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Director, then Road to Perdition (2002), Jarhead (2005), Revolutionary Road (2008), the James Bond films Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015), and the critically acclaimed war film 1917 (2019). He also made Empire of Light in 2022 but has not been active since. Yet, earlier this year, it was reported that Mendes was working on an ambitious four-film project related to arguably the best band ever – The Beatles!
Mandes is working on four individual biopics, each dedicated to one member of the famous group – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. All four movies are currently planned for a 2027 release, which demonstrates just how big this project is. But this is old news. What we have for you here is some important casting information,...

Das Original: Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, und George Harrison in „The Beatles: Get Back“ (Credit: Apple Corps Ltd.)

The cast of actors set to play The Beatles across four Sam Mendes films has reportedly been set, and includes Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney.
We’ve known for a couple of months that Sam Mendes is set to produce four interconnected films based on The Beatles, perhaps the world’s most famous band in history.
All four films are to be released in the space of a year, with 2027 being the target. In a rather interesting approach, each film will be situated from a different band member’s point of view, meaning we’re getting Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison’s stories. McCartney and Starr have agreed full life story and music rights, and the families of Lennon and Harrison have done the same.
Considering that Mendes has got four films to get working on, we’d imagine he’s keen to get going. As such,...

Neon has scheduled an October 18 release for Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner Anora.
‘Anora’: Cannes Review
Mikey Madison stars as a sex worker from Brooklyn who falls for the son of a Russian oligarch, triggering a tumultuous series of events. The film also stars Mark Eydelshteyn, Karren Karagulian, and Yura Borisov.
US box office currently trails 2023 by more than 23% after a disappointing start to the summer season and embattled cinema owners will welcome the addition of a well-reviewed film that has been described as Baker’s most commercial to date.

Sean Baker’s screwball sex worker comedy Anora, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, will receive a fall theatrical release by distributor Neon.
Baker’s film about a young sex worker’s romantic entanglement with the son of a Russian oligarch will get a theatrical release starting Oct. 18, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The fall release places Anora in contention for awards consideration.
The fall release for a top Cannes award winner has worked for Neon before, having had an impressive track record releasing earlier Palme d’Or winners like Parasite in 2019, Triangle of Sadness in 2022 and last year Anatomy of a Fall.
Baker’s past credits include The Florida Project and Red Rocket. The director’s low-budget features about people overlooked by society have become critical hits and awards season contenders.

Neon has dated their fifth Cannes Palme D’Or winner Anora for Oct. 18 per Comscore in what will be a limited release.
October is the traditional launch pad for Neon with their Palme D’Or winning fare including 2019’s ultimate Oscar Best Picture winner Parasite (Oct. 11), 2021’s Titane (Oct 1), 2022’s Triangle of Sadness (Oct. 7), and last year’s Oscar winner Anatomy of a Fall (Oct. 13). Of the five, and granted it was pre-pandemic, Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite did the best at the domestic B.O. with $53.3M, arguably the fourth highest grossing foreign language (and foreign produced) movie stateside after Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Life Is Beautiful and Zhang Yimou’s Hero.
Anora follows a high class stripper from Brooklyn, played by Better Things‘ Mikey Madison, who falls in love and soon marries a Russian oligarch’s son. The family has problems with her and complications ensue. Some critics have...

Sean Baker’s “Anora” is betting big with a fall release date.
The feature, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024, will be released October 18 from Neon, IndieWire can confirm. The limited release window makes “Anora” primed for the fall festival circuit, with possible inclusions at Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF, which concludes right before “Anora” will hit theaters.
“Anora” stars “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” breakout Mikey Madison as an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). Writer/director Baker previously helmed Oscar-nominated film “The Florida Project,” groundbreaking iPhone movie “Tangerine,” and Simon Rex’s career-best “Red Rocket.”

“Anora,” Sean Baker’s comic look at an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, will hit theaters next fall. The film will open in limited release on Oct. 18 from Neon.
It’s a lucky time of year for the indie studio. Neon previously launched “Parasite” on Oct. 11, debuted “Triangle of Sadness” on Oct. 7 and opened “Anatomy of a Fall” on Oct 13. Like “Anora,” all three of those films premiered at Cannes and won the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top honor. “Anora” was the first U.S. film to earn the prize since 2011’s “Tree of Life” from director Terrence Malick.
In a rave review for Variety, Peter Debruge enthused that the film was the “uncut gem of this year’s Cannes competition,” adding that it is “a rowdy Safdie-style movie about two cultures (Russian and American), two languages (Russian and English...

No one really expected this year’s Cannes Film Festival to replicate the stellar showing of last year at the Oscars, when official selections Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall, and The Zone of Interest took an unprecedented three of the 10 Best Picture nominations and a total of 20 noms and three wins among them. How many times can the French catch lightning in a bottle like that achievement? Who thought 2019 could be equaled or topped, when Parasite became the first Palme d’Or winner to take the Best Picture Oscar since Marty did it in 1955 and where Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (also an official selection that year) went on to 10 Oscar nominations and two wins?

Australia’s Sharmill Films has acquired distribution rights to Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed Of The Sacred Fig from Films Boutique. The feature scooped two awards at Cannes over the weekend.
The distributor will mount a theatrical release for the Iranian film in Australia and New Zealand. No release date has yet been scheduled but it will be submitted to key festivals in the territories ahead of a national release.
Sharmill picked up the rights before it received its world premiere in Cannes on Friday (May 24), after one of the first buyer screenings for the feature.

Cannes awards have become hugely influential in subsequent awards races, especially the Oscars. The top honor, the Palme d’Or, confers prestige and a stamp of approval — this year from the Competition jury led by multi hyphenate Greta Gerwig — that awards voters take seriously.
Palme winners “Parasite,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “Anatomy of a Fall” were all Best Picture Oscar contenders and won Oscars. And they were all picked up by specialty distributor Neon before they won their Cannes prize. Neon did not break its streak. The 2024 Cannes Film Festival was officially closed yesterday, May 25, 2024, as the prizes for the movies and the actors were awarded at the closing ceremony. It was a very exciting and content-filled event, and we have also reported on numerous movies that had their premiere at Cannes, some of which were received well, while others… not so much. But, of course, what everyone wants to know is who won the Palme d’Or, the most important award at Cannes, and we can finally confirm that Neon’s film Anora won the award for the best in-competition movie shown at the festival.
Several interesting facts can be said about this movie and its victory, so we are going to discuss them in the upcoming paragraphs, while here – we can only congratulate Anora and all the people involved with the project on a major success.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival concluded on Saturday, May 25 following two weeks packed with screenings, stars, press and parties. With the prizes having been handed out for the festival’s 77th anniversary, we can now start looking at what contenders might be in the best spot to get into the upcoming Oscar race. Let’s examine the winners from this year’s festival and see the history that each category has when it comes to the Oscars.
In recent years, we’ve seen the festival serve as a huge springboard for major players in the Oscar derby. Three of the last four winners of the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, have nabbed Best Picture nominations: “Parasite” (2019), “Triangle of Sadness” (2022) and “Anatomy of a Fall” (2023). Other big winners at recent festivals that became big Oscar players include “Drive My Car,” “The Zone of Interest” and “BlacKkKlansman.” This year’s...

Often, the juries at the Cannes Film Festival will try to make a political statement in their choices for the winners of the world’s most famous film festival. Not this year. At least, not in the way they might have.
I rather thought that director Mohammad Rasoulof would take the Palme d’Or for his stirring The Seed Of The Sacred Fig. It deals with the oppressive regime in Iran and the crisis in one family, where the daughters rise up to protest against the wishes of their father, a judge handing out death sentences for those who make their voices heard.
Plus, the back story of Rasoulof’s own daring escape from his home country after making this movie in secrecy and also being handed an eight-year prison sentence, is also a strong one.

Sean Baker’s “Anora” has won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, a jury headed by Greta Gerwig announced on Saturday.

The Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, with plenty of films making a splash on the starry Croisette on the French Riviera. However, one studio executive tells Variety, “There aren’t many Oscar-buzzy titles to be excited about, not even in the international feature space.”
This year’s main competition jury, led by president Greta Gerwig and including J.A. Bayona, Ebru Ceylan, Pierfrancesco Favino, Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nadine Labaki and Omar Sy, will name its winners on Saturday.
It was looking like a foregone conclusion that the Palme d’Or win would be bestowed upon Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón, which was picked up by Netflix. However, on Friday, Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” garnered the most enthusiastic reactions on social media from attendees and the longest-standing ovation at 12 minutes. Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” has a lot going for it on the way to a potential Palme d’Or win: strong reviews, an anguished political call-out against Iranian oppression, and Rasoulof’s own status as an exile who just fled his home country and was finally able to attend Cannes after all. Rarely in recent decades has the festival circuit been as disrupted as it has in the past 12 months. A confluence of local and global issues — from war to inflation, political unrest to societal shifts — have created a perfect storm for many of these vital cultural platforms, leading to funding shortfalls, staff losses, major PR headaches and in some cases cancellation. Amid shifts in consumer and industry behavior, there are also broader existential questions being asked about the role and potency of festivals.
Since last year’s Cannes, we’ve seen flashpoints or upheaval at Sundance, Berlin, Hot Docs, Thessaloniki, IDFA, El Gouna, Cairo, Busan, Odessa and others. Questions have been hanging over the likes of Venice and Toronto but both have made positive announcements in recent weeks: the former by re-upping Alberto Barbera, the latter by confirming a cash injection to bolster its market.

Dolly De Leon, who rocked the Cannes Film Festival two years ago in “Triangle of Sadness,” has joined the cast of “Severino: The First Serial Killer,” an upcoming series from Philippines outfit CreaZion Studios.
While “Severino” is the highest profile project, the producer is building a larger slate of feature films.
“Severino” De Leon is a large-scale period thriller series, chronicling the tale of Catholic priest Severino Mallari, who killed 57 people during the Spanish colonization era of the country. Producers Rj Agustin and Real Florido have tapped Yam Laranas known for his horror films “The Echo” and “The Road” as series director. The cast also includes Dennis Trillo as Severino and Chai Fonacier. Production is scheduled for August.
Florido is set as director and working with producer Kristine De Leon on development of “The Fantabulous Badingger-z,” a rotoscope animation movie adapted from the comic book “Badingger-z and the Accla Assassin.

German Films celebrated its 70th anniversary at Cannes on Sunday, with its guests looking back but also looking forward.
“It has gotten much better,” Managing Director Simone Baumann told Variety at the event.
“We’ve had Oscar-winning ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ Oscar-nominated ‘The Teachers’ Lounge’ [for best international feature], films by Wim Wenders and with Sandra Hüller! Sure, Wim showed a Japanese movie and Sandra a French one [‘Perfect Days’ and ‘Anatomy of a Fall’], but it doesn’t matter: It’s more ‘mixed’ these days and I am proud of it, to be honest.”
At Cannes, 14 German productions and co-productions have been selected this year, including Match Factory’s main competition offerings “Motel Destino” by Karim Aïnouz – who also attended the bash – and Miguel Gomes’ “Grand Tour.” Run Way Pictures is behind Mohammad Rasoulof’s anticipated “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.”
As festivals get “more competitive,” underlines Baumann, international collabs are here to stay.

A24 picks up the new film from Ruben Ostlund, the director of Triangle Of Sadness – and Kirsten Dunst and Keanu Reeves lead the cast.
We’d imagine that one of the most coveted projects to go to market at Cannes this week is Ruben Östlund’s follow-up to the critically celebrated 202 film, Triangle Of Sadness. It’s called The Entertainment System Is Down, it boasts a glorious premise, an admired director and a leading trio of Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl and Keanu Reeves. Oh, and let’s not forget the giant plane that the production bought before it even found a studio backer.
Whilst studio backing of some sort was never really in doubt given the star power that Östlund has attached to the project, Östlund will likely be particularly happy to have A24 as a partner for the US rights, given that this looks to be one of the...

Moore plays a fading Hollywood star whose career is set to be axed by misogynists when she’s offered a secret new medical procedure
Coralie Fargeat, known for the violent thriller Revenge from 2017, now cranks up the amplifier for some death metal … or nasty injury metal anyway. This is a cheerfully silly and outrageously indulgent piece of gonzo body-horror comedy, lacking in subtlety, body-positivity or positivity of any sort. Roger Corman would have loved it. It’s flawed and overlong but there’s a genius bit of casting in Demi Moore who is a very good sport about the whole thing. And as confrontational satire it strikes me as at least as good, or better, than two actual Palme d’Or winners: Julia Ducournau’s Titane and Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness.
The Substance is a grisly fantasy-parable of misogyny and body-objectification, which riffs on the...

A24 acquired the U.S. rights to Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down this weekend.
The eight-figure deal gives A24 U.S. distribution rights to what will be the Swedish film director’s second English-language movie, after 2022’s Triangle of Sadness. The latter won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, which marked Östlund’s second time taking home the prize after 2017’s The Square.
Like his last movie, The Entertainment System Is Down is also a social satire, this time set on a long-haul flight in which the entertainment system fails and passengers must figure out how else to fill their time. Östlund and his producer, Erik Hemmendorff, purchased a real Boeing 747 for the film.
The movie’s cast includes Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun and Samantha Morton, with Dunst and Brühl set to play a married couple.

Copenhagen-based TrustNordisk has just picked up international rights to the Danish drama “Home” by actor-turned director Marijana Jankovic (“The House that Jack Built”).
For her debut feature after 2019’s multi-awarded short film “Maja,” a best short winner at Tribeca, Jankovic has assembled an impressive A-list international cast.
This includes Dejan Cukic (“Snabba Cash”), Nada Sargin (“The Mould”), Zlatko Buric (“Triangle of Sadness”), Claes Bang (“The Square”), Jesper Christensen, Trine Dyrholm (“The Girl With the Needle”) and Lene Maria Christensen (“Unruly”).
Based on a script co-penned by Jankovic with the seasoned Bo Hr. Hansen, behind Thomas Vinterberg’s upcoming series “Families like Ours,” a hit at MipTV, and Babak Vakili (“Outlaw”), the story is inspired by the director’s own experience, and feelings of and reflections on uprootedness.

Ruben Östlund is checking in two new actors for his next feature. Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl are the latest to join the Swedish filmmaker’s The Entertainment System Is Down.
The feature takes place on a long flight in which the onboard entertainment system fails, leaving the passengers to deal with their own boredom — to darkly comedic results. Östlund is shopping the package at Cannes, with Keanu Reeves already attached to star. The production has purchased a retired Boeing 747 for the shoot.
The filmmaker has stated he aspires for Entertainment System to cause the biggest walkout in Cannes history when it inevitably plays at the fest. Östlund famously included a lengthy vomiting scene in Triangle of Sadness, the 2022 Palm d’Or winner that skewered 1 percent culture amid the backdrop of yachting for the ultra wealthy. While that scene tested audiences’ ability to handle a gross-out scenario, he has said...
