Exclusive: Disney+ Hotstar isn’t done with the Criminal Justice franchise just yet — in fact, it might only just be getting started.
We can reveal the streamer has ordered a fourth season of the Hindi-language series, which is from Applause Entertainment and was originally based on the 2008 BBC series of the same name.
Peter Moffat’s British show went to two seasons, but Gaurav Banerjee, Disney+ Hotstar’s Head of Content for Disney+ Hotstar and HSM Entertainment Network, Disney Star, and his team have now taking the Indian show well beyond that point. You can watch a teaser trailer for the fourth season here.
“This is a pretty special moment because it marks five years of the Hotstar Specials journey, which launched in 2019,” he said. “Criminal Justice was our first big fiction series, and it is fantastic to see the franchise become stronger and continue to get critical acclaim and consumer love.

Zee End Is Nigh
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., the disappointed bride in the failed engagement between Zee and Sony India, has formally ended its quest for a merger. On Tuesday, it withdrew its application before the industry regulator National Company Law Tribunal and said that it will focus instead on internal growth. Pulling the Nclt application also makes it somewhat easier for Zee to pursue its arbitration and other legal actions against Sony.
The plan to merge the two mid-size film and TV businesses was on the table for over two years, but finally (acrimoniously) collapsed in January 2024. Sony is also seeking restitution from Zee, which it says failed to live up to the agreed merger terms. Since the wedding bells stopped ringing, Zee has also announced that it will slice its workforce by 15%.

For veteran Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, his latest film “12th Fail” is the gift that keeps on giving.
Based on the 2019 book of the same name by Anurag Pathak, the film tells the true story of Manoj Kumar Sharma who conquered extreme familial poverty to pass one of the world’s toughest examination processes and become an Indian Police Service officer.
Distributed by Zee Studios, the modestly budgeted “12th Fail” released theatrically in October 2023 in a Bollywood market where only big-budget action spectacles were working and many smaller films were taking the easier route to bowing directly on a streamer. The lead cast of Vikrant Massey (Disney+ Series “Criminal Justice”) and Medha Shankr, while extremely competent, were not marquee names.
The film struck a chord with audiences and has grossed $8.5 million to date, more than three times its budget. “Each film has its own God, and it’s always...

Noted actor Pankaj Tripathi faced one of the toughest challenges of his career when he was asked to portray former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in biopic “Main Atal Hoon.”
Vajpayee (1924-2018) was a poet and a politician who served three terms as Prime Minister. He belonged to the Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp), the party, which is currently in power in India. Vajpayee, who presided over India’s nuclear tests, was also known as a diplomat who improved relations with the country’s arch rival Pakistan and introduced multiple reforms. He was popular across party lines.
“I’m not good at mimicry,” Tripathi told Variety. The conflict that the actor was how much of Vajpayee to mimic and how much to internalize his performance. “How much of his mannerisms should I keep and how much not,” Tripathi said.
Tripathi read several books about Vajpayee and watched news clips and speeches.

Scripted formats were placed front and center of BBC Studios’ panel at Series Mania, as the Doctor Who seller confirmed it is making up to three more versions of Ghosts and has bought Spain’s Brutal Media.
One of the hit BBC show’s creators, Simon Farnaby, recently told a podcast the show – which has achieved smash ratings on CBS in the U.S. – is being remade in Germany and Spain.
Matt Forde, who runs BBC Studios Global Entertainment, confirmed “there are two or three other versions in the works.”
“We love those shows and love the UK versions,” said Forde. “We are finding ways into these worlds in local creative communities.” Ghosts was recently renewed for a fourth CBS season, although the BBC version has ended.
Deadline revealed recently that BBC Studios’ deal with Lionsgate, which spawned the likes of Ghosts, had elapsed, but Forde was bullish about the scripted formats game.

Indian streamer Disney+ Hotstar is planning a major push into animation content for adults.
The push follows the success of Graphic India’s 3D animation “The Legend of Hanuman,” the third season of which debuted earlier this month to a critical and audience reception that the streamer is happy with. The series is derived from ancient Indian mythological epic “The Ramayana.”
“There are so many stories around around ‘The Ramayana’ that are remaining to be told. We feel that this is a franchise, which has lots of storytelling left, and we want to really scale up and build this world in an exciting manner,” Gaurav Banerjee, head, content, Disney+ Hotstar and HSM (Hindi-language speaking markets) Entertainment Network at broadcaster Disney Star, told Variety.
Disney+ Hotstar is teaming with Graphic India again for another adult animation series, which will be unveiled within the next six months, but it is coy about specific details at the moment.

To say anyone “won” at the end of “Succession” is a stretch, but there’s no denying who came out on top at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Matthew Macfadyen, who played the eternal shit-eater (turned CEO) Tom Wambsgans on HBO’s drama, took home the trophy for Best Supporting Actor. It was his first nomination and thus, his first win.
At the Golden Globes, the Supporting Actor race isn’t divided between Comedy and Drama contenders. There’s only one category for all supporting stars, meaning Macfadyen beat out not only his nominated co-stars, Alan Ruck and Alexander Skarsgård, as well as Billy Crudup’s dramatic performance in “The Morning Show,” but also Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”) and James Marsden (“Jury Duty”), whose roles land them in the comedy categories at other awards shows. Thankfully, that means no one can whine about whether Macfadyen’s colorful quips should’ve forced...

Disney+ Hotstar lost the rights to offer Indian Premier League (Ipl) cricket last year, but the streamer remains India’s market leader, according to Ampere Analysis.
The Disney-owned service has a 29% share of India’s 171 million streaming subscribers, Ampere’s latest report reveals — about 50 million subs as of Q1 2023. Rivals Prime Video and Netflix trail behind with 12.4 million and 6.2 million, respectively.
Disney+ Hotstar has lost some subs, but Ampere predicts it will remain the market leader for some time to come, as it moves to a strategy for profitability and increasing Arpu (average revenue per user). Its key titles include the Indian remakes of The Night Manager and Criminal Justice, and it offers many Disney, Lucasfilm and Marvel titles.

Rosie Perez is peeling back the curtain on Hollywood whitewashing.
The “Flight Attendant” star revealed that her former agent, whom she declined to name, encouraged her to undergo cosmetic surgery to land more roles early in her career.
“I don’t want her to be canceled, but she told me that if I dyed my hair blond and got a nose job, ‘I can get you more jobs, because you’re not Black,'” Perez told Variety in a cover story. “I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘Oh, my goodness. Like, thank you, fired.'”
But at the time, Perez admitted after firing her agent, “I had nobody. I had no money.” Perez recalled in 2014 that the agent in question encouraged her to “pass for white.”
After firing the agent, Perez later bonded with “Criminal Justice” co-star Jennifer Grey, who had her own career issues post-nose job.

If there is a law in place, one is bound to follow it and behave accordingly. In the United Kingdom, all movie and Ott content is subject to censors and, all major platforms that operate there, have been getting their content duly rated from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The only Ott platform that had avoided committing itself to this system was Amazon Prime. It has now signed up for the British Content Rating Guidelines and offers age-wise ratings for content.
As many as 29 Video On Demand and Ott streaming platforms operate in the UK and all of them provide age ratings for their content. The censorship of films in India is a British legacy, of course. The intentions were different when it was launched. The British Raj wanted to curb anything that smacked of being against it. The Indian State has continued to subject films to censorship...

Exclusive: HBO content, including tentpoles such as House of The Dragon and Succession, is on the verge of moving from Indian platform Disney+ Hotstar, where it has been streaming since 2016, according to local industry sources.
The move seems to be in line with Disney CEO Bob Iger’s announcement of a restructuring and cost-cutting at the company. While HBO content, in particular Game Of Thrones, helped Disney+ Hotstar build its subscriber base when it first launched a pay tier, English-language content is still considered a niche market in India.
At the same time, the Disney-owned platform is under pressure to reverse its subscriptions decline with more mass market content. Although it remains India’s biggest streamer, Disney+ Hotstar’s subscription base dropped by 6 to 57.5 million during the quarter ended December 31, 2022. The decline is partly attributed to the loss of the Indian Premier League cricket tournament, which was bagged by Viacom18...

The Hindi adaptation of UK mini-series The Night Manager, based on the John Le Carre novel, is shaping up to be one of the most highly-anticipated shows in a busy Indian web series season. Produced by The Ink Factory and Banijay Asia for Disney+ Hotstar, the show is set to start streaming on February 17.
Sandeep Modi, who is on board as director and showrunner of the Hindi version, with Priyanka Ghosh as co-director, has creatively helmed the project and tell Deadline of an ambition is to shoot a second season in India. “I keep joking with Simon [Cornwell, Le Carre’s son and co-ceo of The Ink Factory] that we’ll make season two before you do and you can use that for the English version,” says Modi.
The first adaptation of the novel, for BBC and AMC back in 2016, was a ratings hit and rumors of a second run have continued ever since without an official announcement. Le Carre passed...

Meet any high-profile Indian director or producer these days, and the talk is all about bibles, writers rooms and showrunners, rather than making films. Driving down Mumbai’s main artery, the Western Express Highway, most of the billboards are promoting new premium drama series from Prime Video, Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, rather than the latest Bollywood release.
Of course, the shift of talent from film to episodic is happening everywhere in the world, but in the fast-paced, opportunistic environment of the Hindi-language content industry, these trends have become supercharged. Netflix and Amazon moved in here around 2016, local broadcasters fought back with their own streaming services—Hotstar (now Disney+ Hotstar), SonyLiv, Viacom18’s Voot and ZEE5—and the demand for premium drama series started to skyrocket, as competitors tried to differentiate themselves in an overcrowded field.

Alia Bhatt took to Instagram on Saturday night to share the first teaser of the spy action thriller ‘Heart of Stone’, helmed by the British director Tom Harper (‘Peaky Blinders’ and ‘War and Peace’).
Gal ‘Wonder Woman’ Gadot plays the lead character, CIA Agent Rachel Stone, with Jamie Dornan, an actor and musician from North Ireland who first got noticed in ‘Fifty Shades of Gray’, ‘Hotel Rwanda’ and ‘Criminal Justice’ star Sophie Okonedo, and Alia, who essays the part of Stone’s understudy, Keya Dhawan.
The teaser is loaded with high-adrenaline action showing Gadot doing what she’s best at — kick some hostile ass. “Rachel Stone lives off the adrenaline she’s addicted to,” says Gadot in the teaser.
“It is going to be extremely epic … a super grounded raw action thriller,” she promises her fans, who are eagerly awaiting the film’s 2023 release on Netflix.

Exclusive: Criminal Minds showrunner Simon Mirren and his production partner Benjamin Anderson are currently in Mumbai working on a procedural drama series with Indian firms Applause Entertainment and Locomotive Global, Deadline can reveal.
Mirren — also known for series such as Spooks, Versailles and Without a Trace — and Anderson are involved in the precinct-based crime ‘pro-serial’ through their new company, Case Closed Entertainment.
Applause, which takes a feature film financing approach to streaming series, has greenlit the series working alongside Case Closed and Locomotive, which is based in Mumbai and California, and will look to sell it to an SVoD service once produced. The Aditya Birla Group-owned Applause was behind the Indian remake of Peter Moffat’s BBC drama Criminal Justice and several other Western scripted format adaptations such as The Office.

Actor Purab Kohli regrets not getting to share screen space with acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi in the upcoming courtroom drama ‘Criminal Justice: Adhura Sach’ and called it a “missed opportunity”.
“During the filming of the series, Pankaj Tripathi and I hung out a lot. We have a few scenes together in the court but sadly not with each other.
“That was a missed opportunity for me. I mentioned it to director Rohan Sippy and the writer too. Requested them for at least one scene where I get to act with Pankaj Tripathi but that did not happen sadly,” Purab said.
With wit and humour by his side, the lawyer Madhav Mishra, reprised by Pankaj Tripathi returns for the third installment of ‘Criminal Justice’ along with Shweta Basu Prasad, Swastika Mukherjee, Purab Kohli, Aditya Gupta, Deshna Dugad and Gaurav Gera.

Pankaj Tripathi, who is set to reprise his role of Madhav Mishra, silver medalist and lawyer, in the upcoming season of ‘Criminal Justice’, has shared that in real life he is very similar to his character in the show given his patience level.
Drawing the Venn diagram of himself and the character, which essentially looks like concentric circles, Pankaj said: “I am very similar to Madhav Mishra. Just like him, I can also keep my cool in the face of challenging situations. I tell myself that things will get better with time so I need not worry too much.”
With wit and humour by his side, Madhav Mishra is known for his patience in the face of toughest of situations, something that Pankaj deeply believes in. “I have always believed that it is important to keep your patience and cool. When you lose it, it leads to more chaos,” he said.

Actress Swastika Mukherjee, who will be seen playing a mother in the courtroom drama ‘Criminal Justice’, says playing such characters makes her life easier.
This is not the first time she will be seen playing a mother, Swastika has earlier played a mum in movies such as ‘Dil Bechara’ starring late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The daughter of late Bengali star Santu Mukhopadhyay shares how her character as a mother closely mirrors her own personality.
“Whenever I essay the role of a mother; life becomes easier. The task at hand also becomes easier because the instincts and emotions are always there when you are a mother in your personal life too,” Swastika said.
She added: “The only thing required is a trigger which the screenplay gives you. In the series, both the kids are going through misery and are part of a dysfunctional family, so it was important for me...

Actor Purab Kohli says that the major reason behind doing the Pankaj Tripathi-starrer ‘Criminal Justice: Adhura Sach’ is its director Rohan Sippy.
The third installment of Criminal Justice has Shweta Basu Prasad, Swastika Mukherjee, Purab Kohli, Aditya Gupta, Deshna Dugad and Gaurav Gera.
“This is actually the second time I got approached for Criminal Justice. They wanted me in the second season too but I couldn’t be a part as I was filming for a different project and there were date clashes. But I am so glad that I got a second chance in Criminal Justice: Adhura Sach. Extremely happy to be a part of season 3,” said the star.
Purabh also added how working with the season’s director, Rohan Sippy had always been on his list.
“Rohan and I wanted to work for a very long time. A major reason behind accepting this role was him,” the star added.
