Tarzan (1999)
Fantastic, but lacked something elusive.
After the disasters of Mulan, Hercules, Hunchback and Pochahontas it seems Disney is back on form. Overall, this is a great film but it still had something missing. The animation will take your breath away, the characters will warm you heart and there is enough emotion to bring you close to a few tears. Tarzan moves like he actually does in the book and Jane is perfectly voiced but as many have observed, it's the villain who is out of place. In a film with so much warmth and friendliness, your going to need a good baddie to keep the balance. Clayton just isn't evil enough to put enough threat to the characters, Hunchback may have been poor but it had a top class villain. Other than that and something you cannot describe, the film was fantastic. Toy Story 2 looks even better and then after that the Mickey Mouse factory will hopefully be back on track.
Armageddon (1998)
Surely the most over-rated film of last year
I've never watched something as rubbish as this in my whole life! There was so much action it became a mess and the performances were pathetic. Not to mention the dialogue, they tried to make something very serious, very funny (they failed) I saw "Deep Impact" and thought it was great, sleek, linear and funny when the time was right. Armageddon was such a mess you didn't even have a clue what was happening and wasn't at all realistic. As if NASA would let some guy pick out the men he wanted for the mission to save the world, lets be serious, he worked on an oil rig with no experience of space. So why did Arma- become more successful than Deep Impact? Probably because of it's huge marketing machine and for some reason people seem to like Bruce Willis. Perhaps the worst film I've ever seen.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (1998)
The greatest show on earth !
I watched this show from about it's third episode and from then on I've been transfixed. Of course now its gone on to America where it will probably become most famous but it started right here in the UK where its still the best, in the US the questions are far too easy. The worlds greatest game show ever !
Psycho (1998)
A remake of Psycho? Asking for trouble.
You should only make a remake of films which aren't instantly recognized, remaking Psycho is just asking for trouble. Even if this remake of Psycho is a good movie (which it isn't) you will never be able to recapture the sheer suspense that Hitchcock created back in 1960. Vaughan lacked the warmth (and the coldness) of Perkins and Heche was to boring to believe she could provoke passionate murder. And the settings were just all so wrong. The Bates house wasn't the least bit scary and the mother wearing that long haired wig made her look funny rather than terrifying. They say Van Sant is a huge Hitchcock fan, any Hitchcock fan in their right mind would never try and update such a classic for the nineties. Also the fact that this film is in color means it loses a lot of its chilling aspects. When I first watched the original I thought it was a shame it was in black and white but now I can't imagine it any other way. All in all a huge mistake and completely blasphemous in movie terms.
Psycho (1960)
The greatest Thriller/Horror ever created !
The first Alfred Hitchcock film I saw was The Birds and I thought it was a film which couldn't be beaten in its genre, until I saw, "Psycho." (There are a few spoilers here.) Horror films usually leave you cold and chilled and as shocking and disturbing Psycho is, it's a film you can somehow warm to. The shower scene is a scene like no other. Its more shocking than frightening, the instant when the curtain draws back and you are faced with a shadowy figure clutching a knife sucks the adrenalin out you like a sponge, after Marion is viciously stabbed she clutches the shower curtain and falls to the floor, so simple yet so powerful. The full story which is one that you really need to know nothing about to get the full affect. Unfortunately I knew quite a bit about it before I saw it. If there ever was a film with a plot twist this film would top the list. If you haven't seen it then go, go, go and rent it now, in fact buy it ! You won't be disappointed.
