Dragon Ball Z (1996)
One word to describe it: OUTRAGEOUS!
Ok, ok, so I may be biased because DBZ may be one of my favorite shows of all time, and if not my favorite Anime`- EVER! But who cares? I love this show. And I loved Dragon Ball (although I must say that the American dub of Dragon Ball is for more of the 11-under crowd if you ask me) Now, allow me to tell you my testimony of how I came to love the Dragon Ball series....
When I was in Kindergarten-first grade or so, I saw my first episode of Dragon Ball. I was sick and home from school, and it was airing on Fox Kids I believe. It came on after Bannana's in Pajamas. (God save my soul, I hated that show.) Well, I've been one who has followed and practiced Martial Arts my whole life, and since I was a huge fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (and since I was sick in bed) I decided to watch Dragon Ball. I laughed, and smiled, and of course enjoyed it. I can't tell you exactly what I remember, Master Roshi and his island come to mind at best. Well, over the years I skipped through the episodes, never exactly becoming "hooked" and die hard. That wouldn't be for another few good years. In 5th grade, my friends were Role Playing Dragon Ball Z during recess (it had just started to air around that time.) Of course, I wanted to role play with them, but didn't know-or remember- any female characters. They had me play as Bulma. All that came to mind was blue hair (and one of my friends complained of me playing Bulma because they had to play Yamucha. Go figure) Years still went by and it wasn't until around the 6th grade did I start watching. Over the summer I'd be wtaching Frieza or Garlic Jr. reruns, and my younger cousin and his friend would make fun of the show. (I tell you now: DBZ isn't just about people screaming at the top of their lugs with beyond steroid possible muscles and beams of light shooting from their bodies.) And when the time came of the Android/Cell saga, I WAS OFFICIALLY HOOKED!!!!!! DBZ is the first show I've come to obsess over, and even though I am a 15 y/o female, I don't care. If fighting and mountains blowing up appeals to me, then too bad!!!!!! DBZ ROCKS!!!
P.S: Like I said in my above comment about screaming and muscles and lights, it is beyond that. The show talks a lot about courage, friendship, and loyalty. Though the American edited version may not be AS good as the Japanese version, I still find it great. And it may take a while to understand the principles of DBZ if you start watching in the middle of a saga, but keep watching- it may take time (like me.)
Akira Toriyama has definitely created a classic.
Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Absolutely AMAZING!
Let me tell you, when I started my Freshmen year of Highschool this year, and found out that the first play we were reading was Romeo + Juliet, I moaned and groaned and nearly chewed up my pencil in annoyance. Sure, I found the play compelling, and I knew exactly what it was about, but Old English text really annoys me. Well, we finally finish the story, watch a fairly good 16th century version of the R+J play, and then....MODERN DAY VERSION!!!!! (yes, we watched this movie in my 4th period English class)
Ever since I was 9 and this movie came out I've wanted to see it. Just never the chances. I've always passed it in the video stores, but still didn't pick it up. But now here's the chance. From the very beginning everyone (even the guys) was hooked on the film. We knew exactly what would happen. But still we were anxious to watch on. Even though it's still hard to understand a little bit because of the Old English talk, it's not that hard to follow. The play had me rolling with laughter, watching with a complete blank expression anticipating the next scene, or flowing with tears. It was great. The beginning had to be my favorite scene, and the Capulet party.
Although I do wish it had a modern script that way it was easier to understand, but it doesn't really take away the entire flavor. What counts is I LOVE (LOVE!) this movie!!! I have to get it on DVD. The actors do an amazing job- Tybalt and Mercutio are my favorites in this movie. It would be awesome if another R+J adaption was made (with a modern script please).
SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4+ our of 4 stars
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
BEST 'TEEN' MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!!!
Let me tell you, I hate teen movies. I hate them, hate them, HATE THEM!!!! All the characters seem to only see their future at the latest keg party, love to get high, get knocked up, and for the most part, screw up their entire lives. And you know what? I AM A TEENAGER! But let me put it this way....Ferris Bueller's is the king of not only 'teen movies' but of all Comedy's!
Ferris Bueller's Day Off came out a year before I was born. Though I don't necessarily care for a ton of 80's movies for the fact that all the huge hair and cheesy teenage love stories annoy me, but this movie has got to be one of my all-time favorites.
I distinctively remember the first time my mom and I rented Ferris Buellers Day off together. I think I was 5...and I loved every Matthew Broderick movie I had seen (and still do...with the exception of The Cable Guy...that movie was a brick) So, naturally, I knew I was going to like this one...
Within 2 minutes of the movie I was laughing so hard I was crying. And not only that, I realized it was a movie that was made in an era that I was not at all too familiar with. But I didn't care, all I knew was that I loved the movie. And of course...I STILL DO!!!!
Now here I am, a high school Freshman, and I've heard tons of adults tell me to remember my highschool years, because they are some of the best years of your life. Well, I'm starting to feel that. And not only am I now gaining good memories from high school, but good memories from a great movie, that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
10+++++++++++/10
Speed (1994)
You CAN'T Replace This!!!!
***(Possible Spoilers)*** Let me tell you, I was 7 when this movie hit theaters, and at first I had NO intentions on wanting to see this movie. I was stuck with Disney films, Star Wars, and Jurassic Park. That's what mattered. Surprisingly, my mom gave me the option to see the movie with her or stay at my grandparents. Well, after careful "thinking"(if I could think straight at 7) I decided to go and see it. BOY OH BOY!!!!! Despite the strong language, action violence and anything else that isn't healthy for a young mind, I loved it. I ignored the language, all I cared was if the bus was gonna blow or not.
The first film I saw with Keanu Reeves in it was Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey, but SPEED made me fall in love Keanu Reeves!!!! Still to date, Keanu Reeves is my favorite actor; and I have my mom and the movie SPEED to thank for that.
Listen to this! When I was extremely sick with the flu for a week, the movie Speed had just recently come out on video. While lying in bed sick and nothing to watch on television, my mom pleasantly surprised me with the movie SPEED to watch since she knew I was absolutely in love with Keanu Reeves and just loved the movie. That really helped me out alot. Tripped out isn't it?! Well hey, whatever helps. This movie has boosted my love for action movies of all kinds. Like I said, despite the strong language, this movie really would make a good family film for teenagers and parents.(It was on FOX/ABC Family a while back ago believe it or not) I love this film. It's stuck with me for 8 years now and it will always be a top favorite of mine. I recommend it for everyone alike.
10+/10
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Jedi's and Politicians... ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE?!?!!!!
OH BABY! BABY! BABY!! I just got back from this 2 hour + movies and I've never been this hyped after a Star Wars film- EVER. I LOVE Return of the Jedi- now AotC has knocked RotJ down to my #2 favorite Star Wars film. Actings' great. Plot is outstanding. The graphics are far beyond your imagination. And the fighting...ooooooooh the fighting will leave you're heart craving more of the endless action!
The story line is SO MUCH MORE in depth then I think anyone could predict before seeing this movie. I am a HUGE Star Wars fan, and of course I wondered if Lucas could pull off another great SW film- and he has.
*************!!!!POSSIBLE SPOILER HERE!!! TAKE CAUTION!!**************** ! ! ! ! R E A D A T O W N R I S K ! ! ! !
The love between Padme` and Anakin really keeps your heart pounding. I'll admit, I cheated and read the VERY LAST sentence of the book( and not the rest of it. Just the last sentence) before seeing the movie. I knew everything *should* be okay at the end, but throughout the movie, it still kept me watching...and watching...and watching...wondering....
And believe me...if you've heard people already raving about Yoda's sweet battle- it's so much more than that. HE KICKS THE DONKEY'S TAIL RIGHT IN!!!!!!!!! YODA ROCKS!!!!! You have to see it to believe it.
TO summarize the rest....I loved this film. I'm going back to see it again and again and again. Heck I'll buy 5 DVD's and Tapes when it comes out and watch it on every TV in my house. See this film. Don't let a sour feeling get at you before the feeling if you think "this film will suck." That will only make the film worse for yourself. Attack of the Clones might sound like a stupid title at first- but it really does live up to it's name in the movie.
If there's anything bad with this film- it's that it's the second to
last Star Wars film- THE AGONY OF IT ALL!!!!!
I gave this film an excellent rating. If you hate this film- drop me an E-mail and give me your reasons- then we'll settle with aggressive negotiations.
Favorite part: When Yoda rules the screen- And when all the Jedi's fought against the droids towards the end...and...heck I loved the whole film.
Favorite lines: "...I'm afraid you're out numbered..."-Count Dooku "I don't think so..."-Mace Windu
The Secret Garden (1993)
This Movie Shouldn't Stay a Secret!
WOW! First time I saw this movie in 1993 I was in Kindergarten. I remember the day my mom bought the movie for me when it came out on VHS and I just couldn't stop watching it! Still to this day I still can't stop watching it! The Secret Garden is the most beautiful movie ever made-in every aspect. It's one of "me and my mommy's favorite movies"!. This movie is so great, it even has it's own copy-cat movie(*Cough* LITTLE PRINCESS *cough!*...don't get me wrong, I do like the movie though).
This movie has the best 3 child actors I have EVER seen! I'm surprised they haven't become mega-movie actors by now; but atleast they do have one amazing movie that they can add to their resume`!
I would give you a summary, but I'd ruin the whole story!! If you want me to, drop me an e-mail asking about The Secret Garden and I'll ruin it for you. Believe me, you'll wanna plan your own Garden.
Since alot of people are adding it, I'll add mine as well... Favorite Part: When Mary, Collin and Dickon are in the garden together and Collin learns how to walk for the first time. Also when Collin comes face to face with his father for the first time!!
This movie shouldn't stay a Secret! I give it a 10 out of 10
Spider-Man (2002)
This Movies Puts in the "Amazing" in the "Amazing Spider Man"!
On opening night-Friday, I went to see Spider~Man with my mom and step-sister. Never in my life have I been this hyped up to see a movies- and better yet, get to see my favorite comic book hero come to life on the big screen. The theater was jamed packed. It was almost impossible to get tickets, until we got lucky with the last theater. It brought a tear to my eye to see so much Spider~Man patriotism!!! For you who have never read the comic, and don't know diddily-squat about Spider~Man, have no fear.
This movies is fit for Spider~Man comic book readers, and non-Spider~Man comic book readers. The movie is in my opinion, in depth, realistic, and just too cool. Yet it strictly stays to the plots, so it doesn't bore you. Instead of having a man in black spandex, a cap, and pointy bat ears who's naturally and physically capable of kicking anyone's tail in (with the help of a high-tech vehicle)we have Peter Parker. A soon-to-be Highschool graduate, nerd, and lowdown in the faces of his peers(for the exception of a couple). He's small in frame, but has a big mind. Peter Parker loves the girl next door, and has a rich boy for a best friend. It seems all of us can relate to Peter in some way, yet look to him like a real hero.
When Peter Parker becomes "Your friendly neighborhood Spider~Man" or the "Amazing Spider~Man" his personal life as a "normal" young man doesn't change his social status.
Even though it carries a PG-13 rating, I'd say this movie is slightly suitable for nearly all ages. Towards the end when Spider~Man fights the Green Goblin, it'll probably terrify a 6 year old. The younger ones might hate the kissing scenes, but anyone can love Spider~Man's heroic moments.
This movie was definitely worth my time, and I plan to see it 1,000 more times in theaters, and watch it more than 1,000 times when it comes on video. If you've been dying to see this movie, you'll go home satisfied. If you hate comics, hate super-heroes, and just don't care to see Spider~Man, hopefully you'll have a change of heart. But you've wasted your time if you go home grumpy.
I've given this movie a 10 out of 10. To me, this is the best film I've seen! I can't wait for the future Spider~Man films. Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire were the perfect picks. The graphics were amazing, the acrobatics and form of Spider~Man were perfect to the comic, and the acting was AMAZING!!! You couldn't pick a better cast.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPIDER~MAN RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
