Station Eleven (2021)
Profound, immersive, dreamy, EXCELLENT like a beautiful symphony
I'm a huge fan of post-apocalyptic media in all forms and can appreciate your old one armed to the teeth group fights another armed to the teeth group in between farming and looting trope, But this show created something different, unique and beautiful. The slowness, the disjointed narrative all; work to give the show a dream like experience that abruptly crashes into the harsh reality of survival before going back again. It's a show that exposes the essence of human experience, about both missing the old world, about reliving it's pain and about building something new and beautiful. To those who say art could not exist in a brutal post-apocalyptic landscape - even cavemen created art and their lives were so short and brutal few lived into the late 20s. Until 20th century average life expectancy was under 40 and nine out ten children dies in infancy and yet we created so much timeless art.
Skylines (2020)
Non-stop action packed ride!
If you are a man of action like me you will absolutely love this film. Cool graphics, interesting characters, non-stop action and a story with a TWIST. What else is there to want in a sci-fi film?
American Factory (2019)
A real horror film
The scary thing to me was not the cult like indoctrination and working conditions at the Chinese branch of the company and the expectations of the same from American workers. People can get used to almost anything. The scary part is that the film showed us the limits of human performance, a futile desperate attempt to outperform the robots, to delay the inevitable. A worker in China, even working 12 hours a day can maybe be 3 times as productive as an American worker, but so what? A machine will work 24/7, never complain, never get tired and be 10 times as productive.
I think the Chinese understand it but American workers in the film are in complete denial, longing for the past that was just a fleeting moment in history.
Monsters of Man (2020)
Non-stop sci-fi action!
Killer robots, hard core special forces soldiers and nerdy programmers - what is not to like? Only rating 9/10 because the movie is about 20 minutes too long.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Started slow, became god-tier later
Watch only if you enjoy thought-provoking "hard" sci-fi. Caution - this is not a feel-good light reading like The Mandalorian. The amount of symbolism, references and possibilities could quickly overwhelm if you ate not paying attention! By the end of 10th episode my jaw was on the floor. Raised by Wolves is Ridley Scott's best work since The Alien. One thing for sure, it has overtaken The expanse as my faviourite hard sci-fi series.
Occupation (2018)
Solid sci-fi brings characters to life
Don't pay attention to low IQs giving this jewel 1 star reviews. It is easily one of the best science fiction releases of the past two years. While no Kubrick's Space Odyssey (also at times close!) the film has everything - plot, character development, great story, a plot twist, and of course gorgeous visuals and superb art-direction. Highly recommended!
Underwater (2020)
Best Scifi-Horror of the the past years
If you liked Alien you must watch Underwater. While being clearly derivative with copying parts of Alien almost wholesale the film manages to bring enough suspense and atmosphere to be seriously enjoyable. 9/10 on visuals and set design. A true must watch for any scifi horror fan!
