Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the narrative of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.
Exclusive: One of the many talking points to emerge from this week’s Cannes Film Festival screening of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Megalopolis is whether distributors will be able to replicate the film’s ‘fourth wall moment’.
As most reviews for the film detail, at a certain point in Wednesday’s world premiere a performer walked onto the stage in front of the cinema screen and engaged with Adam Driver’s character in a device known as “breaking the fourth wall.”
Is it plausible that distributors would replicate such a moment in every screening? Unlikely. But at least one will give it a good shot.
Jean Labadie, who runs the film’s French distributor Le Pacte, told Deadline: “We certainly will do a lot of such performances. With four screenings a day in many...

Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded passion-project, Megalopolis, screened at the Cannes Film Festival last night, and the first reviews for the sci-fi epic have now been shared online.
Depending on which critics you choose to trust, the movie is either a masterpiece, an unmitigated disaster, or somewhere in between!
Despite reports of audiences giving the film a 10-minute standing ovation, reviews have been decidedly mixed, which is represented by an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%.
Only 22 verdicts have been added so far, so this score is sure to change when press screening take place down the line. But with such a polarizing reaction, we don't anticipate it fluctuating too much.
Have a read through some of the reviews at the links below.

Is Francis Ford Coppola’s controversial magnum opus “Megalopolis” any good?
The two hour and 20 minute dystopian drama certainly divided the audience at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night with its collision course of shocking scenes: a doctored sex tape featuring Adam Driver, Shia Labeouf in drag playing a Trumpian figure and Aubrey Plaza dominating her way through a slew of men.
But there was still a huge amount of respect for iconic director Coppola, who received a four-minute standing ovation upon entering the room. After the credits rolled — which included a tribute to his late wife Eleanor — and the standing ovation began, Coppola hugged Driver and Giancarlo Esposito and got emotional as he made a speech dedicating the film to hope and family.
“Thank you all so much. It is so impossible to find words to tell you how I feel,” Coppola said, then introducing his family members in the audience.

The most awaited film this year at the Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, had its world premiere Thursday night, with the dystopian epic decades in the making landing a seven-minute standing ovation.
Coppola, the 85-year-old director and five-time Oscar winners, bowed as the lights came up inside the Grand Theatre Lumiere. He was congratulated by his Cotton Club star Richard Gere and got a hug from Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux as the ovation carried on.
Said Coppola to the crowd finally: “Thank you all so much — it is impossible to find words how I feel.” He then introduced those around him — including his granddaughter and son and collaborator Roman Coppola and sister Talia Shire. He called his cast “family” and emphasized the movie’s end message: “We should pledge allegiance to our families…that children should inherit a beautiful world from us.”

Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” just may have broken the internet — and the brains of more than a few critics at Cannes.
Upon the film’s world premiere, fans and critics alike took to social media to capture the “insanity” of Coppola’s latest feature, which has been described by the auteur as a “Roman epic.” Count IndieWire’s David Ehrlich as a fan: In his review, he said that “Coppola’s wild and delirious fever dream inspires new hope for the future of movies.” The film debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and is still looking for distribution, but will definitely get an IMAX release regardless.
Adam Driver leads the feature as a pseudo alter ego of writer/director Coppola, with the Oscar-nominated actor playing an architect who envisions saving his corrupt city and transforming the metropolis into a utopia. As audiences take their seats for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis in Cannes, we have a big update on the status of the movie's theatrical release.
Despite speculation that the legendary Godfather director's self-funded passion project might struggle to find a distributor (there was already some concern before the recent controversies), it's just been announced that the sci-fi epic has been given a global IMAX release.
“The film is going to get an IMAX release,” IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told the press during a Cannes event earlier today. “One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly. So we’ve committed to Francis to do a global Imax release.”
Gelford added that he'd met with Coppola in Cannes, and that they would most likely wait to see who will distribute the film in the U.S. and when before deciding on a theatrical release date. The film...

Imax has committed screens around the world to show Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” the company’s CEO Richard Gelfond confirmed at a Cannes Film Festival event on Thursday.
The film’s trailer, which debuted on Tuesday, said that “Megalopolis” would be coming to Imax theaters this year — but it was not specified that the release would be global.
The run-up to the premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed epic at Cannes on Friday has been filled with anticipation and controversy, partly because “Megalopolis” has yet to secure a U.S. distributor — though a global release with Imax may help sweeten the pot. The film has found distribution in France and other international territories, including the U.K., Spain and Italy.

Francis Ford Coppola will finally unveil Megalopolis at the Cannes Film Festival next week, but a new report outlining the legendary filmmaker's on-set antics could make the already daunting task of finding a distributor for the film even more challenging.
We've heard some stories about behind-the-scenes turmoil during the production of the $120 million+ sci-fi epic, but it sounds like the shoot may have been even more chaotic than previous reports suggested.
Following the debut of yesterday's trailer, The Guardian published a piece detailing some of the (alleged) behaviour of the Apocalypse Now director.
Among other things, it's said that Coppola chose to sit in his trailer smoking weed for hours on end while the cast and crew were waiting to film. He has also been accused of pulling scantily clad or naked female extras onto his lap and attempting to kiss them to "get them in the mood."

Francis Ford Coppola Accused of Inappropriate Behavior Toward Female Extras ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
In a recent report, Francis Ford Coppola was accused of allegedly harassing on-set female extras on the set of his new movie Megalopolis. Arguably, one of the most prominent filmmakers of our time, Francis Ford Coppola, shared an epic teaser trailer for his upcoming film “Megalopolis” which he described as his “best work” on Tuesday, May 14, ahead of its world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival.
On the same day the teaser dropped on YouTube and stunned viewers, Guardian published an article that alleged that Coppola demonstrated inappropriate behavior around female extras while on his Megalopolis passion project set. The article accused Coppola of exhibiting “old school” behaviour on sets, including refusing to utilize digital techniques and instead subjecting the actors to gruelling shooting process to “achieve the effect through old-school methods, using projectors and mirrors,...

Megalopolis executive co-producer Darren Demetre denied claims published this week that director Francis Ford Coppola tried to kiss female extras while on set.
“I was never aware of any complaints of harassment or ill behaviour during the course of the project,” Demetre told The Hollywood Reporter in response to reports in The Guardian that alleged that Coppola demonstrated “old school” behavior around women while on set of his Megalopolis passion project.
Specifically, the report cited sources who said Coppola pulled women to sit on his lap and tried to kiss several topless or scantily clad female extras while filming a nightclub scene.
“I have known and worked with Francis and his family for over 35 years,” Demetre said. “As one of the first assistant directors and an executive producer on his new epic, Megalopolis, I helped oversee and advise the production and ran the second unit. Oi, we’re back with Megalopolis again! Yeah, Coppola’s supposed masterpiece has been a hot topic in recent weeks as the famed director is trying to sell his sci-fi epic to buyers so that it can be ready for a theatrical release this year and, most likely, the awards season. So far, the director has not been able to find a major buyer, but the marketing campaign is great, despite the fact that it seems that the director is paying for it out of his own pocket, as all the official information we have comes from the director himself or his personal social media profiles. We have received some teaser photos, and a teaser video, and today, the first official teaser trailer was also released, which you can check out below.

After a tantalizing teaser clip that showed Adam Driver precipitously balanced on the edge of a skyscraper, Francis Ford Coppola has dropped an even more tantalizing full teaser for his $120 million self-funded epic, Megalopolis.

Adam Driver has played a city-dwelling seducer before — think: “Girls” at the very least — but this time, the actor has transformed into a slick harbinger of chaos for Francis Ford Coppola’s epic “Megalopolis.”
Driver stars as artist and city planner Cesar Catilina, once again adjacent to faux Italian-ness for the screen. Cesar’s biggest opponent is Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare per the official synopsis. Yet when Cesar begins an affair with Franklyn’s socialite daughter Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), Cesar’s determined path to forge a new city begins to falter.
Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman also star.
Coppola writes, directs, and produces the epic feature which had an estimated budget of $120 million-plus.

The latest teaser trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis has been released (via SFFGazette.com), offering our best look yet at the legendary filmmaker's "Roman epic fable."
Showcasing a society in chaos, we see here that Coppola is essentially telling a classic Ancient Rome fable in a modern version of America. The visuals are undeniably gorgeous and the director clearly hopes this will be his magnum opus.
However, Megalopolis - which Coppola began writing in 1983 - still doesn't have distribution. Following a recent screening attended by studio and streaming executives, one distributor said, "There is just no way to position this movie," with the implication being that it's likely to struggle in theaters.
As a result, this one may end up on VOD/streaming.

In just three days' time, Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded passion project Megalopolis — a film over forty years in the making — will make its world premiere at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. But whilst most of us sadly won't be living it up with Coppola and co on the Croisette this week, we are at least starting to glimpse the fruits of The Godfather filmmaker's labours. Last week we got a first clip of the film, and yesterday — following the news that the mega-budget epic has finally secured UK distribution — Coppola dropped a brand new teaser trailer for his opus. In the clip that dropped on Monday night, we see more of the scale and ambition of the project, with the large ensemble cast, dynamic shots of a utopian society and protests.
The film, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, is a Roman epic set in an imagined modern America, according to early descriptions.
Adam Driver leads Megalopolis, and the film’s cast includes Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney and Dustin Hoffman.

“Our new film ‘Megalopolis’ is the best work I’ve ever had the privilege to preside over,” reads a quote attributed to iconic director Francis Ford Coppola attached to the official trailer for his new epic film.
The picture, which will premiere in competition on Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival, has been a project many years in the making for the director. He first began work on the screenplay in the 1980s.
The legendary filmmaker behind “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now” has invested $120 million of his own money into the film.
The trailer starts with a voice-over musing about the decline of empires – “when does an empire die? Does it collapse in one terrible moment? No, no. But there comes a time when people no longer believe in it” — before cutting to a Roman chariot race, a metropolitan skyscape and scenes of protest.

We've already heard so much about Francis Ford Coppola's struggles to get his giant new film Megalopolis made — from financial wobbles, casting changes and, most recently, a screening for studios and streamers that generated little interest in the way of distribution deals. Yet with a French release in place and an upcoming premiere at the Cannes Film Festival designed to boost the buzz, Coppola has put the first clip from the film, featuring Adam Driver's character, online. Check it out:
Megalopolis is set in an alternate modern America, where the city of New Rome is at a pivot point in history. It has to adapt or crumble, but there is conflict between Cesar Catilina (Driver), who dreams of a utopian, idealistic future for the city and its incumbent mayor, Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who clings to the status quo, allowing greed, special interests and partisan warfare to dominate.

Ahead of the movie's world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14, the first trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's sci-fi passion project, Megalopolis, has been released online.
Really more of a scene preview than a proper teaser, the footage sees Adam Driver's character, Caesar, step out on to the ledge of a building and walk precariously towards the edge. Caesar then begins to topple forward, but before he falls, he yells "time stop," and freezes in place. After a few moments, he snaps his fingers and the world around him returns to normal.
Coppola shared the clip on Instagram, with a sad addendum.
"Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf."

Adam Driver is an architect who can control time in the first-look clip for Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming, self-funded film, Megalopolis.
In the more-than-two-minute video, Driver’s Cesar Catilina makes his way onto the edge of a skyscraper, seemingly considering jumping. As he’s about to fully step off the building, he shouts “Time stop” and the cars below him pause at his command, and he leans back onto stable footing.
The film, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, is a Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America, according to its description.
“The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests and partisan warfare,” the logline reads. “Torn between...

We have already talked about Francis Ford Coppola’s major return to film, the epic project Megalopolis, which has been described as a visionary work, but is nevertheless having trouble finding a distributor. The movie is facing an uphill battle as we have reported, but it seems that Coppola has decided to do some of his own marketing to convince the studios to take his film. Not long ago, we provided you with a first-look image from the movie, showing stars Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel, and just today, a first teaser video focusing – once again – on Driver has been released, confirming several interesting things.
Just a brief reminder before we continue. As we have written, the story of Megalopolis is an interesting one altogether. The movie was conceived way back in 1979, while Coppola was filming Apocalypse Now, one of the greatest war movies ever made. Now, 45 years later, the movie is finally complete,...

The Francis Ford Coppola passion project Megalopolis, an idea the 85-year-old filmmaker says has been brewing in his mind for around half of his life, is set to have its world premiere at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. In anticipation of the Cannes screening, the maestro himself, Coppola, has released our first look at some of the movie’s footage. It came with a sweet dedication to his late wife, Eleanor, reading:

Though Megalopolis still doesn't have a distributor, the movie is expected to release before the end of the year, and we have a first official look at the sci-fi epic's main characters.
A lot of people were pleasantly surprised when Francis Ford Coppola's passion project came to fruition after the legendary filmmaker's previous failed attempts to get his vision off the ground, but the Godfather director announced that he had returned to the project back in 2019, and cameras started rolling in 2022.
Despite reports of some significant production issues, the movie wrapped late last year, and Vanity Fair has now shared the first official stills.
The images feature Star Wars actor Adam Driver as "an idealistic architect named Caesar, who hopes to rebuild the once great city, while Game of Thrones alum Emmanuel plays Julia Cicero, "the socialite daughter of a corrupt mayor (played by Giancarlo Esposito), and Driver’s character’s nemesis.

Francis Ford Coppola is a brand name and undoubtedly one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. And while he has provided us with a series of classic movies over his long career, he has been inactive for many years until he recently blessed us with Megalopolis, a movie that is just as ambitious as it sounds but may remain as one of the year’s biggest mysteries. We have already reported on the early reactions and struggles that the movie is facing going forward, and we are glad to confirm that Vanity Fair has blessed us with an exclusive first-look image from the movie, which shows the film’s two main actors, Adam Driver, and Nathalie Emmanuel.
If you’re not fully acquainted with it, Megalopolis is an interesting story altogether, as the movie was conceived way back in 1979, while Coppola was filming Apocalypse Now, one of the greatest war movies ever made.

Deadline reports that Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis will officially premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17th.
The project has been a long time coming, as Coppola began writing Megalopolis back in the 1980s but recognized that it would require a huge budget to match its massive scope, so it sat on a shelf for decades. In order to get the film made, he put his own money on the line, reportedly upwards of $120 million. The film also boasts quite a star-studded ensemble cast, which includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, Db Sweeney, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Bailey Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, and James Remar.

Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited “Megalopolis” will have its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, IndieWire has confirmed.
While the full festival lineup will be announced April 10, Deadline first reported that the epic has received the gala premiere slot at Cannes for a May 17 debut and that it will play in competition.
However, “Megalopolis” still has not secured distribution, IndieWire understands. Coppola’s attorney Barry Hirsch is working on selling the film, and he previously told IndieWire the film was unlikely to debut at a festival until it landed distribution.
The feature will be Coppola’s return to Cannes following his respective Palme d’Or wins for “The Conversation” and “Apocalypse Now.” His other Cannes film was “Tetro,” which screened in Directors Fortnight.

After 13 years, legendary Oscar-winner Francis Ford Coppola is seemingly back with a new movie, Megalopolis, which is slated to be released in late 2024, although that could still be pushed back. After a controversial outing with 2011’s Twixt, Coppola has finished his new movie, a sci-fi epic with an ensemble cast, which has been screened for distributors in the United States. As of the time of writing, not much is known about the movie, but Deadline reports that the film’s runtime is 2 hours and 13 minutes, and that is without the credits, but as Mark Fleming Jr. writes, the runtime seems “remarkably brief,” which indicates that Coppola has indeed made a great movie.

When you look at the cast of Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, it’s pretty amazing how many up-and-coming young actors were involved, most of whom were complete unknowns at that point. Over forty years after its release, Coppola has shared audition footage of The Outsiders on Instagram, featuring Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillion, Ralph Macchio, and more. There’s even footage of actors who didn’t get roles in the movie, including a young Anthony Michael Hall.

Although there’s no distributor yet confirmed for Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-in-development, nearly completed epic Megalopolis, we’re starting to get a sense of when we may see the $100 million epic. The director himself recently indicated it’ll be out in a few months, but according to a new report, a fall release is more likely.
In a round-up of Cannes possibilities, Deadline notes the movie is targeting “a big fall IMAX release,” which means a Venice or North American festival (i.e. TIFF or NYFF) could be more likely than a visit to the Croisette. The article also notes it’s unlikely that Steve McQueen’s Blitz, Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, David Lowery’s Mother Mary, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer will be stopping by Cannes, but George Miller’s Furiosa, Audrey Diwan’s Emmanuelle, Andrea Arnold’s Bird, and David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds,...

The director took to Instagram to unveil the first look at Megalopolis, which shows a dingy, rain-soaked alley with a collapsed statue in the center. It’s not much, but the first look at Megalopolis does potentially show that the project is on track to be released later this year. Plot details have largely been kept under wraps, but the film is said to center on an architect who seeks to rebuild New York City as a utopia after a disaster. The director did offer a few more details two years ago, but they’re fairly ambiguous.
“It’s a love story…A woman is divided between loyalties to two men.

Tormé also was a writer on Saturday Night Live during its eighth season (1982-83); wrote and produced with Travis Walton the fantasy drama film Fire in the Sky (1993), starring D.B. Sweeney and Robert Patrick; and was a consultant on the acclaimed Robert Zemeckis sci-fi drama Contact (1997).
