In 2014, Gayle Rankin made her Broadway debut in Sam Mendes’ revival of Cabaret, playing the supporting role of Fraulein Kost. Now, exactly a decade later, Rankin is playing the lead role of Sally Bowles opposite Eddie Redmayne in a new Broadway production that opened April 21.
“I feel like a completely different person,” says Rankin, as she sits in her dressing room in a red dressing gown, with her blond hair clipped back. “It’s so rare that you get to see your life marked by something so actual, by a piece of work. And what a piece of work to be able to gauge where you are as a human being.”
In recent years, the Scottish actress — who grew up south of Glasgow — rose to prominence with a series of film and TV roles, including The Greatest Showman and HBO’s Perry Mason, and most notably as Sheila the She-Wolf...

“Abbott Elementary” star Lisa Ann Walter shared with People that she’d be up for revisiting her 1998 version of the classic “Parent Trap,” telling the outlet, “Yes, absolutely.” She was only too happy to speak about her “Parent Trap” costar, Lindsay Lohan, at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday.
“I would love to go back for another version of it — or if [Lohan] wants to come on to our show, I’d love that, too,” she added.
This isn’t the first time Walter has discussed bringing Lohan onto the hit ABC sitcom. In January, she told Entertainment Weekly that the younger actress could play a relative. “I guess we’d have to make her a relative since we’re both redheads — since I’m a ‘redhead,’ and she actually is,” Walter explained.
In February, Walter brought up the possibility of reviving her “Parent Trap” character again, this time at the SAG Awards.

Lindsay Lohan may not like watching her own movies, but admitted she got emotional when she saw her son watching one of her beloved films.
The actress stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday, where the host asked her whether she watches the films she had starred in. Drew Barrymore noted that she can’t because it feels “indulgent.”
While Lohan said she doesn’t seek out her movies, she will occasionally have one on in the background. “I mean, if someone wants to watch it and I’m there, I put it on and I’m like cooking in the kitchen or I have to run upstairs or I’m busy doing something else, ’cause it’s hearing my voice that I’m like, ‘Eh,'” she explained.

The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?
It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

German director Volker Schlöndorff, who won the Cannes’ Palme d’Or and an Oscar for his 1979 drama “The Tin Drum,” is set to direct a film about how Antonio Vivaldi — the 18th-century Italian composer of “The Four Seasons” — formed what is touted as the world’s first all-female orchestra.
Schlöndorff’s still-untitled depiction of this lesser-known aspect of Vivaldi’s career is based on a book by German writer Peter Schneider, which has been adapted for the big screen by Italian scribe Francesco Piccolo (“My Brilliant Friend”) along with the director.
The plan is for cameras to start rolling later this year on the film, which will mark the first foray into Italian-language cinema by Schlöndorff, who is a fluent speaker. It will be shot entirely in Italy. Casting is still being decided, and sales are likely to be launched at the Cannes market in May.

Vanessa Redgrave is the Oscar, Emmy and Tony award-winning actress who has starred in dozens of films over several decades, but how many of those titles are classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1937, Redgrave was almost destined to become a performer: her parents were Sir Michael Redgrave and Lady Redgrave (Rachel Kempson), her siblings were Lynn Redgrave and Corin Redgrave, her daughters are Joely Richardson and the late Natasha Richardson, and her son-in-law is Liam Neeson. So when it comes to the Redgraves, acting definitely runs in the family.
Redgrave earned her first Oscar nomination in 1966: Best Actress for “Morgan! A Suitable Case for Treatment.” She won 11 years later as Best Supporting Actress for “Julia” (1977) and competed four more times.
Unfortunately, her Oscar victory is best remembered for her controversial acceptance speech than for the performance itself:...

Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson were happily married for 15 years. According to Neeson, part of the reason he was able to meet Richardson at the altar was because he turned down a film role. Neeson could have made his debut as James Bond in GoldenEye, but Richardson did not want this. He shared why he thought she didn’t want him to take the role.
Natasha Richardson did not want Liam Neeson to play James Bond
In the 1990s, Neeson fell under consideration to become the next James Bond. While he didn’t get an outright offer to star in the film, he was under consideration for the iconic role.
“I was not offered James Bond,” he told Rolling Stone. “I know the Broccolis. They looked at a bunch of actors. Schindler’s List had come out and Barbara [Broccoli] had called me a couple of times to ask if I was interested,...

The Olivier Award-winning West End revival of Cabaret is coming to Broadway: Producers announced that the acclaimed musical will begin previews at the August Wilson Theater in spring 2024.
Not confirmed: Whether the West End production’s original 2021 stars Eddie Redmayne (as the Emcee) or Jessie Buckley (as Sally Bowles) will make the move. Redmayne’s participation, in particular, has been widely speculated, prompted in part by his participation in this year’s Tony Awards tribute to Cabaret composer John Kander and actor Joel Grey, who played the Emcee in the original Broadway production as well as the 1972 movie version.
The West End revival – officially titled Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club – swept the 2022 Olivier Awards with seven wins including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor and Actress in a Musical (Redmayne and Buckley), and Best Director (Rebecca Frecknall). Supporting Actor and Actress in a Musical awards went to Elliot Levey and Liza Sadovy.

The Olivier Award-winning revival of Cabaret is headed to Broadway.
A new production of the musical, which originated on the West End in November 2021, will play Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre in spring 2024.
Few other details have been announced, including the Broadway casting. Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley starred in the lead roles of the Emcee and Sally Bowles at the start of the run in London and both won Olivier Awards for their portrayals. Cabaret won the 2022 Olivier for best musical revival, with Rebecca Frecknall winning for best director.
The musical, which features a score by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Joe Masteroff, centers on a seedy night club in pre-World War II Berlin, overseen by the mysterious, all-knowing Emcee. American writer Cliff Bradshaw sweeps in, meets performer Sally and tries to create a stable, happy life, even as the threat of fascism is on the rise.

Neeson told The Times of London that he had expressed his strong interest in the role, until his then girlfriend, actress Natasha Richardson, intervened, wary of what Neeson called the “gorgeous girls in various countries getting in and out of [Bond’s] bed.”

In the latest Saturday Night Live episode, Jenna Ortega, the youngest person to host the show this season, performed a parody skit of the 1998 film The Parent Trap alongside Wednesday co-star Fred Armisen.
She acted out the twins Hallie and Annie in Nancy Meyers‘ big hit, which was itself a remake of the 1961 version starring Hayley Mills. Bowen Yang, cast as the less-than-competent director, is leading a rehearsal of the infamous scene when Hallie and Annie realize that they are twins in their summer camp cabin. Yang asks Armisen, a crew member, to step in as Ortega’s “twin.”
Armisen, however, keeps interjecting with inappropriate and random ad-libs, professing his love for Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Lisa Rinna and commenting on how “hot” Shawn Mendes is.
Eventually, he and Ortega act out the part when they piece together parts of an old photograph of their parents, which match perfectly.

Jenna Ortega could have starred in a remake of The Parent Trap.
Ortega, who was a child actress and star of Disney Channel comedy Stuck in the Middle, did, however, give it a go on Saturday Night Live.
She teamed with her Wednesday co-star Fred Armisen to read through the lines, while Bowen Yang directed.
Ortega, who was not born when the Lindsay Lohan-fronted remake of The Parent Trap premiered in 1998, may have aged out of actually starring in a new version of the body identical twin comedy, but in the skit, she played both 11-year-old twins Hallie Parker and Annie James.
Armisen, as Raymond, was just helping out reading the lines, or was he?
The Parent Trap, which was based on David Swift’s 1961 Hayley Mills-fronted comedy, starred Lohan as well as Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson. It was directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers.

Ian Fleming’s classic novels that originated the James Bond character are being updated to remove outdated and racist language.
According to The Telegraph, all 14 books by Bond’s original author, which debuted with 1953’s Casino Royale and ran through 1966’s Octopussy and The Living Daylights, will be re-released by Ian Fleming Publications in April with adjustments to words and phrases deemed offensive by the company’s appointed “sensitivity readers.” In a statement, the publisher claimed they would “follow Ian’s lead” by first making “changes to Live and Let Die that he himself authorised.”
“Following Ian’s approach, we looked at the instances of several racial terms across the books and removed a number of individual words or else swapped them for terms that are more accepted today but in keeping with the period in which the books were written,” they shared.

When it comes to James Bond, it was a no-go for Liam Neeson. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the action star cleared up rumors that he was slated to take on the role of 007 in the early ’90s, and shared why his late wife, Natasha Richardson, changed his mind about playing Agent 007.
“I was not offered James Bond. I know the Broccolis. They looked at a bunch of actors. Schindler’s List had come out and Barbara [Broccoli] had called me a couple of times to ask if I was interested, and I said, ‘Yes, I would be interested,'” Neeson recalls of being approached for 1995’s Goldeneye. “And then my lovely wife [Natasha Richardson], God rest her soul, said to me while we were shooting Nell down in the Carolinas, ‘Liam, I want to tell you something: If you play James Bond, we’re not getting married.'”

Neeson. Liam Neeson. For awhile, in the mid-nineties, after Timothy Dalton quit as James Bond, pretty much every European leading man had his name associated with James Bond, including Mel Gibson, Ralph Fiennes, and now Liam Neeson is saying he too was considered by the Broccolis. As he told Rolling Stone, it came pretty close to happening:
‘Schindler’s List’ had come out and Barbara [Broccoli] had called me a couple of times to ask if I was interested, and I said, ‘Yes, I would be interested.’ And then my lovely wife Natasha Richardson, God rest her soul, said to me while we were shooting ‘Nell’ down in the Carolinas, ‘Liam, I want to tell you something: If you play James Bond, we’re not getting married.’”
While Neeson admits to occasionally walking around the house humming the James Bond theme to himself to tease his late wife, he admits he has no regrets.

Liam Neeson has such an impressive resume of iconic action roles to his name that it’s pretty surprising he’s never been 007. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, however, the actor revealed exactly why he never played James Bond: Because Natasha Richardson told him she’d refuse to marry him if he did.
Before the role eventually went to Pierce Brosnan, Neeson was the frontrunner to play Bond in 1995’s GoldenEye; at the time, he was a relatively new star thanks to Schindler’s List, and he was preparing to tie the knot with Richardson (who tragically died in 2009). GoldenEye was also the first Bond film to be produced by Barbara Broccoli, following her father Albert R. Broccoli, and she knew exactly who she wanted as her leading man.

Liam Neeson revealed in a recent interview with Rolling Stone that James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli contacted him several times in the 1990s to ask if he was interested in taking on the role of 007. The actor was fresh off an Oscar nomination for best actor at the time thanks to “Schindler’s List.” Why turn down one of the most iconic action roles in film history? It all came down to Neeson’s wife, Natasha Richardson.

Louis Theroux accidentally offended Dame Judi Dench with one of his interview questions.
The documentarian sat down with the Oscar-winning actor for an episode of his BBC series Louis Theroux Interviews, which aired on Tuesday (1 November).
The actor told Theroux that she owned 17 cats during the war, Theroux replied: “During which war?”
Dench, 87, said: “Well, the Second World War. Louis!”
The Belfast star jokingly told off Theroux, 52, for implying that she could have been alive during the First World War (1914 - 1918).
“Am I the only person who heard that? ‘Which war?’” she quipped.
Theroux laughed and quickly tried to defend himself, saying: “I thought you meant the Vietnam war.”
“Oh. No, the Second World War,” Dench laughed.

The title character of Steven Spielberg's 1993 film "Schindler's List" performed numerous heroic acts during World War II, but is not depicted as being the least bit conventionally "heroic." He's a flawed alcoholic who, at the outset of World War II, sees a business opportunity in hiring Jewish workers. In so doing, however, his employees were protected from being apprehended by the Nazis. All told, Oskar Schindler rescued some 1,200 people from the Reich.
Spielberg looks the horrors of the war right in the eye. The film features multiple harrowingly accurate scenes of death, torture, and vicious wartime brutality. In the HBO series "House of the Dragon, actor Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, a character who will -- should "Dragon" last long enough -- no doubt commit multiple acts of murder, perhaps a few acts of torture, certainly several acts of incest, and, just for good measure, two separate acts of enthused cannibalism. Probably also tax evasion. This postulation is based merely on how lascivious and gnarly the show's predecessor, "Game of Thrones," was throughout its 2011 through 2019 run.
Smith's screen acting career began in 2006 with his appearance on a TV adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel "Ruby in the Smoke" and its sequel "Shadow in the North." He was a regular character on the BBC Two series "Party Animals" before landing the plum gig of The Doctor in "Doctor Who" in 2010. The Doctor, for neophytes, is a near-immortal space alien who can, upon his death, choose to regenerate into a new body.

Paul Schrader, a singular American auteur and key figure of the New Hollywood era, will be back at the Venice Film Festival this year to collect a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement. But that shouldn’t suggest the 76-year-old director has acquiesced into the valedictory phase of his creative life.
Schrader will also be on hand in Venice to unveil his 22nd directorial feature, Master Gardener, starring Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver. The film will premiere in one of Venice’s coveted out-of-competition slots, alongside new features from Olivia Wilde, Walter Hill and the late Kim Ki-duk, among others.
Not much has been revealed about the new film, but its summary suggests it loosely conforms to the self-pioneered genre that has defined so much of Schrader’s filmography — what he calls “man in a room” stories, or intimate character studies of socially disaffected men.

The less you remember about 2003 Belgian thriller “Memory of a Killer,” the better, when it comes to its remake, directed by “Casino Royale” veteran Martin Campbell. Relocated to El Paso, Texas, this new version — which channels the brutal cynicism or recent Taylor Sheridan movies, or the even more ruthless tone of Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” — takes the bones of a tough European crime drama and uses them as the grim gallows on which to hang yet another nihilistic Liam Neeson action vehicle.
These days, such Liam Neeson movies unofficially constitute a genre unto themselves. Starting with “Taken,” the Oscar-nominated actor who so sensitively played one of the screen’s great savers of souls in “Schindler’s List” has been reborn as a symbol of retribution. “Taken” came out in 2010, the year after the shocking skiing accident of real-life wife Natasha Richardson, and it has felt as if the actor himself was transformed by that tragedy,...

Nancy Meyers is bringing her filmmaking talents (and her immaculate kitchens) to Netflix, where she’ll write, direct and produce a new feature film.
News of the partnership comes after Meyers and Netflix teamed to release the short film “Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish),” which debuted on the streamer’s social channels in 2020. The special project brought together the cast of “Father of the Bride” and “Father of the Bride Part II” — Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Kieran Culkin, George Newbern and Martin Short — for the first time in 25 years, with Robert De Niro, Florence Pugh, Alexandra Shipp and Ben Platt added to the mix. Meyers wrote and directed the Banks family reunion clip (produced by Reese Witherspoon), which benefitted World Central Kitchen.
Details about the new film are scarce, though the project is described as an ensemble comedy, a formula which Meyers has mastered over her career.

Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, the leading cinema event in Central and Eastern Europe, will honor American actor, director, and writer Ethan Hawke, who will receive the Festival President’s Award at its 55th edition, taking place Aug. 20-28. The award is given to actors, directors, and producers who have “contributed in a fundamental way to the development of contemporary world cinema.”
“We are thrilled to welcome to Karlovy Vary an artist we’ve been admiring for a long time. In 2018, Kviff paid tribute to the Austin Film Society and it is exciting to extend our appreciation of this renowned organization’s work by honoring an actor and director who is so closely connected to the Texas independent film scene,” said artistic director Karel Och and executive director Krystof Mucha.
Hawke will personally introduce Paul Schrader’s thriller “First Reformed,” in which he portrays a parish pastor experiencing a crisis of faith.

This will be an everlasting love. This time last year, The Parent Trap director Nancy Meyers and stars Lindsay Lohan (who famously played twins, Hallie and Annie, in a dual role), Dennis Quaid and more presented us with a truly amazing gift: A virtual reunion. A delight for not only fans of the 1998 movie but also of the 1961 film of the same name. During Katie Couric-hosted, July 2020 get-together, The Parent Trap crew looked back on the filming, shared behind-the-scenes secrets and honored their late co-star Natasha Richardson, who tragically died in 2009 at the age of 45. Of course, a lot has gone down in the lives of the cast and crew in the two decades that...

Taken actor Liam Neeson could've been James Bond, if his late wife Natasha Richardson didn't have a say in it. "I know they were looking at various actors and I apparently was among them," Liam revealed on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Thursday, June 23. "However, my dear, departed wife did say to me…'Darling, if you're offered James Bond and you're going to play it, you're not going to marry me.'" Liam and Natasha first met in 1993 when they co-starred on Broadway's Anna Christie. Both actors were nominated for the Best Actor and Best Actress Tony Awards for their work. The duo ended up getting married one year later, and had two children together:...

Lindsay Lohan is remembering Natasha Richardson. The 34-year-old actress took to Instagram on what would have been the late star's 58th birthday to share a special message. On May 11, Lindsay posted a throwback photo of the duo in the 1998 movie The Parent Trap and wrote, "Happy Birthday Angel #NatashaRichardson." In the movie, Natasha played Elizabeth James, a wedding dress designer who fell back in love with her ex-husband Nick Parker (Dennis Quaid) after their twins (both played by Lindsay) met at a summer camp and switched places on them. Lindsay honored Natasha in a 2020 cast reunion hosted by Katie Couric. "Natasha had such an elegance and...
